Biobased epoxy reactive diluents prepared from monophenol derivatives: effect on viscosity and glass transition temperature of epoxy resins

The use of reactive diluents is undeniably of paramount importance to develop epoxy resins which would meet more demanding and restrictive processes and applications in terms of viscosity and glass transition temperature. In the context of developing resins with low carbon impacts, 3 natural phenols namely carvacrol, guaiacol and thymol were selected and converted into monofunctional epoxies using a general glycidylation procedure. Without advanced purification, the developed liquid-state epoxies showed very low viscosities of 16 cPs to 55 cPs at 20 °C, which could be further reduced to 12 cPs at 20 °C when purification by distillation is applied. The dilution effect of each reactive diluent on DGEBA's viscosity was also assessed for concentrations ranging from 5 to 20 wt% and compared to commercial and formulated DGEBA-based resin analogues. Interestingly, the use of these diluents reduced the initial viscosity of DGEBA by a factor of ten while maintaining glass transition temperatures above 90 °C. This article provides compelling evidence of the possibility of developing new sustainable epoxy resins with characteristics and properties that can be fine-tuned by only adjusting the reactive diluent concentration.

Curing Kinetics of Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate-Based Polyurethane Elastomers

The curing kinetics of MDI-based polyurethane elastomers were studied by non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The kinetic parameters of the reaction system were calculated by the Kissinger method. The changing activation energy was observed by the Flynn−Wall−Ozawa method and the Friedman method. The results of model free fitting showed that the curing reaction could be divided into two stages, showing a change in reaction order when α > 0.45 and a piecewise curing mechanism function of the MDI-based polyurethane elastomers reaction system was deduced by autocatalytic model. The extrapolation method was used to determine the optimum curing conditions for the system, which can accurately describe the curing process. In addition, the optimal curing conditions are when: the constant temperature curing temperature of the system is 81 °C, the curing time is 29 min, and the post-curing temperature is 203 °C.

Renewable green reactive diluent for bisphenol a epoxy resin system: curing kinetics and properties

Hydrosilylation epoxidized eugenol (HSI-EP-EU) is successfully synthesized and used as a reactive diluent for epoxy/anhydride (marked as P) and epoxy/imidazole (marked as I) curing systems. The reactive bio-based diluent HSI-EP-EU has an excellent dilution effect on petroleum-based epoxy resin (E44). The curing kinetics of P + HSI-EP-EU and I + HSI-EP-EU are studied by a non-isothermal DSC method. The kinetics parameters are calculated by using the Kissinger model, Crnae model, Ozawa model and β-T (temperature-heating speed) extrapolation, respectively, to determine theoretically reasonable curing conditions. In addition, the effects of HSI-EP-EU on the antibacterial properties, thermo-mechanical properties and thermal stability of P + HSI-EP-EU and I + HSI-EP-EU systems are also studied. It is found that HSI-EP-EU possessed obvious antibacterial properties and could effectively improve the mechanical properties for the I + HSI-EP-EU.

Super-Toughened Fumed-Silica-Reinforced Thiol-Epoxy Composites Containing Epoxide-Terminated Polydimethylsiloxanes

In response to the demand for high-performance materials, epoxy thermosetting and its composites are widely used in various industries. However, their poor toughness, resulting from the high crosslinking density of the epoxy network, must be improved to expand their application to the manufacturing of flexible products. In this study, ductile epoxy thermosetting was produced using thiol compounds with functionalities of 2 and 3 as curing agents. The mechanical properties of the epoxy were further enhanced by incorporating fumed silica into it. To increase the filler dispersion, epoxide-terminated polydimethylsiloxane was synthesized and used as a composite component. Thanks to the polysiloxane-silica interaction, the nanosilica was uniformly dispersed in the epoxy composites, and their mechanical properties improved with increasing fumed silica content up to 5 phr (parts per hundred parts of epoxy resin). The toughness and impact strength of the composite containing 5 phr nanosilica were 517 (±13) MJ/m³ and 69.8 (±1.3) KJ/m², respectively.

Remarkable Reactivity of Boron-Substituted Furans in the Diels-Alder Reactions with Maleic Anhydride

The reactivity of boron-substituted furans as dienes in the Diels-Alder reaction with maleic anhydride has been investigated. Gratifyingly, the furans with boryl substituents at C-3 gave the exo cycloadduct exclusively with excellent yields. In particular, the potassium trifluoroborate exhibited outstanding reactivity at room temperature. Theoretical calculations suggested that the trifluoroborate group is highly activating and also that the thermodynamics is the main factor that determines whether the products can be obtained efficiently or not.

Variation of mechanical and thermal properties in sustainable graphene oxide/epoxy composites

In this work, the functional graphene oxide (bGO) was facilely synthesized through a grafted reaction between graphene oxide (GO) and bio-based bis-furan di-epoxide (BFDE). The structure of bGO was confirmed by FTIR spectra and Raman spectra. The properties of polymer composite materials depend on the distribution of the nanofiller in the matrix and due to the presence of polymer chains our bGO sheets exhibit a better dispersibility in solvents and polymer matrix, which provides a potential opportunity for the preparation of BFDE composites with excellent performance. Bio-based BFDE composites containing 0.05–0.5 wt.% of bGO exhibit superior mechanical and thermal properties. The addition of just 0.5 wt% such bGO to an BFDE causes 80%, 49%, 21%, 69% and 97% enhancement in tensile strength, flexural strength, flexural modulus, critical stress intensity factor and critical strain energy release rate, respectively. The thermal decomposition temperature T_d of bGO/BFDE composites was increased about ~17 °C compared to blank BFDE sample. In addition, we found that introducing unmodified GO to epoxy matrix lead to an insignificant increase of the thermal property of the resulting GO/BFDE composites. The enhanced mechanical properties and thermal properties of bGO/BFDE composites could be attributed to strong interfacial interactions and high affinity between bGO and epoxy matrix.

Evaluation on Curing Properties and Kinetics of Isophthalonitrile Oxide

N,N-dihydroxybenzene-1,3-dicarboximidoyl dichloride was synthesized from benzene-1,3-dicarboxaldehyde and characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H and 13C NMR). The elastomer was prepared through the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of reaction between liquid polybutadiene (LPB) and isophthalonitrile oxide in this work. The tensile strength of different elastomer was enhanced from 0.14 MPa to 0.33 MPa as the elongation at break decreased from 145% to 73%, and the modulus increased from 0.09 kPa to 0.47 kPa. The parameters of kinetic indicated that the curing reaction was fi rst order reaction and the apparent activation energy of each curing system was less than 10.10 kJ/mol when the content of N,N-dihydroxybenzene-1,3- dicarboximidoyl dichloride was increased from 7% to 12%. These results suggested that nitrile oxides achieved curing of polymer binders at room temperature and this work had defi nite guiding signifi cance for the application of nitrile oxides in polymer binders.
