Ultra Fast Imaging NMR method for measuring fast transport processes in thin porous media

Measuring moisture distributions during fast transport processes in thin porous media is a challenging task. In this paper, Ultra Fast Imaging (UFI) NMR is proposed as a valuable measurement technique for investigating moisture uptake in porous media by achieving a temporal resolution of 10 ms and spatial resolution between 14.5 and 18 μm. This paper gives a detailed explanation about the methodology and the interpretation of the signal intensity. It is shown that there exist specific T1- and T2- relaxation time conditions for performing UFI experiments with signal-to-noise ratios that are sufficiently high. In most cases, a contrast agent is required to optimize these relaxation times and achieve the optimal measurement conditions. In the first part of this paper, both CuSO4 and Clariscan are discussed as possible contrast agents. Furthermore, it is shown that the signal intensity can be linked to the moisture content for water based liquids. The second part of this paper covers penetration experiments on porous PVDF membranes. These measurements show that the technique is able to measure moisture profiles during fast capillary penetration and allows to extract moisture front positions. Those front positions follow a linear time behavior in PVDF membranes. Lastly the NMR-measurements showed similar results when compared to scanning absorptometry (ASA).

Classification of pores, water diffusivity and penetration characteristics of waste materials, and role of water as electron carrier in landfills: A review

Coupling of biogeochemical processes occurs between different waste components and waste layers during decomposition of wastes materials deposited in landfills by mechanisms similar to those occurring in marine sediments (i.e., sediment batteries). In landfills, moisture serves as a medium for transfer of electrons and protons under anaerobic conditions for decomposition reactions to proceed spontaneously, although some reactions occur very slowly. However, the role of moisture in landfills in view of pore sizes and pore size distributions, time dependent changes in pore volumes, heterogeneity of waste layers, and associated impacts on moisture retention and transport characteristics in landfills are not well understood. The moisture transport models developed for granular materials (e.g., soils) are not appropriate to describe the conditions at landfills due compressible and dynamic conditions in landfills. During waste decomposition processes, absorbed water and water of hydration can be transformed to free water and/or become mobilized as liquid or vapor, creating a medium for transfer of electrons and protons between waste components and waste layers. The characteristics of different municipal waste components were compiled and analyzed for pore size, surface energy, and moisture retention and penetration for electron-proton transfer for continuance of decomposition reactions in landfills over time. Categorization of pore sizes appropriate for waste components and a representative water retention curve for conditions in landfills were developed to clarify the terminology and highlight the differences between the landfill conditions and granular materials (e.g., soils) for use of appropriate terminologies. Water saturation profile and water mobility were analyzed by considering water as a transfer medium for carrying electrons and protons for sustaining long-term decomposition reactions.

Bio-inspired adhesion control with liquids

Bio-inspired surfaces enabling wet adhesion management are of significant interest for applications in the field of biomedicine, as components of bionic robots and as wearable devices. In the course of biological evolution, many organisms have evolved wet adhesive surfaces with strong attachment ability. Insects enhance their adhesion on contact substrates using secreted adhesive liquids. Here we discuss concepts of bio-inspired wet adhesion. First, remaining challenges associated with the understanding and the design of biological and artificial wet adhesive systems as well as strategies to supply adhesive liquids to their contact surfaces are reviewed. Then, future directions to construct wet adhesive surfaces with liquids are discussed in detail. Finally, a model of wet adhesion management with liquids is suggested, which might help the design of next-generation bio-inspired wet adhesive surfaces.

Formalin-casein enhances water absorbency of calcium alginate beads and activity of encapsulated Metarhizium brunneum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae

The control of root-feeding wireworms has become more challenging as synthetic soil insecticides have been progressively phased out due to environmental risk concerns. Innovative microbial control alternatives such as the so-called attract-and-kill strategy depend on the rapid and successful development of dried encapsulated microorganisms, which is initiated by rehydration. Casein is a functional additive that is already used in food or pharmaceutical industry due to its water binding capacity. Cross-linked forms such as formalin-casein (FC), exhibit altered network structures. To determine whether FC influences the rehydration of alginate beads in order to increase the efficacy of an attract-and-kill formulation for wireworm pest control, we incorporated either casein or FC in different alginate/starch formulations. We investigated the porous properties of alginate/starch beads and subsequently evaluated the activities of the encapsulated entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium brunneum and the CO₂ producing yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Adding caseins altered the porous structure of beads. FC decreased the bead density from (1.0197 ± 0.0008) g/mL to (1.0144 ± 0.0008) g/mL and the pore diameter by 31%. In contrast to casein, FC enhanced the water absorbency of alginate/starch beads by 40%. Furthermore, incorporating FC quadrupled the spore density on beads containing M. brunneum and S. cerevisiae, and simultaneous venting increased the spore density even by a factor of 18. Moreover, FC increased the total CO₂ produced by M. brunneum and S. cerevisiae by 29%. Thus, our findings suggest that rehydration is enhanced by larger capillaries, resulting in an increased water absorption capacity. Our data further suggest that gas exchange is improved by FC. Therefore, our results indicate that FC enhances the fungal activity of both fungi M. brunneum and S. cerevisiae, presumably leading to an enhanced attract-and-kill efficacy for pest control.

Capillary displacement of viscous liquids in a multi-layered porous medium

Capillary driven displacement of viscous liquids into a porous matrix plays a significant role in several porous media applications such as fractured oil reservoirs and paper micro-fluidic devices. The inherent heterogeneity in porous media is known to cause the invading fluid front to lead in narrow pores followed by large pores during spontaneous imbibition. Here, we use experiments in a layered porous medium to show that the leading front is not always in the narrow pores. We observe in a two layered porous medium that the fluid front always advances faster in the narrow pores. However, in a multi-layered porous medium, the front displacement is strongly dependent on the arrangement of the layers, the relative difference between the capillary pressure, the permeability of the layers, and the viscosity ratio of the wetting and the non-wetting fluids. We also develop a one-dimensional lubrication approximation model based on the experimental observations, which predicts the imbibition dynamics in the layers seen in the experiments. Additionally, from our model, we present a scaling law governing the leading front in the porous layers. We also predict using our model that the volume imbibed in the layered porous medium cannot be determined by using the effective porous medium properties and a detailed knowledge of the characteristics of the layers is required to accurately predict the overall imbibition of the layered porous medium.

The effect of viscosity and surface tension on inkjet printed picoliter dots

In this study, we investigated the effect of liquid viscosity and surface tension for inkjet printing on porous cellulose sheets. We used five model liquids, representing the operational field of an industrial high speed inkjet printer, as specified by Ohnesorge- and Reynolds number. Drops with 30 pl and 120 pl drop size were jetted with a commercial HSI printhead. We printed on four uncoated papers representing the most relevant grades on the market in terms of hydrophobisation and surface treatment. We are presenting a quantitative analysis of viscosity and surface tension on the print outcome, evaluating dot size, liquid penetration (print through) and surface coverage of the printed dots. The most important finding is that for liquids within the jetting window the variation of the liquid viscosity typically has a 2–3 times higher impact on the print outcome than variation of the liquid surface tension. Increased viscosity in all cases reduces dot area, liquid penetration and liquid surface coverage. Surface tension plays a smaller role for liquid spreading and penetration, except for hydrophobised substrates, where both are reduced for higher surface tension. Interestingly, higher surface tension consistently increases liquid surface coverage for all papers and drop sizes. A detailed analysis on the competing effect of dot spreading and liquid penetration is presented, in terms of viscosity, surface tension and surface coverage of the liquid.

In this study, we investigated the effect of liquid viscosity and surface tension for inkjet printing on porous cellulose sheets.

Stick-slip motion and controlled filling speed by the geometric design of soft micro-channels

HYPOTHESIS

Liquid can move by capillary action through interconnected porous materials, as in fabric or paper towels. Today mass transport is controlled by chemical modification. It is, however, possible to direct mass transport by geometrical modifications. It is here proposed that it is possible to tailor capillary flow speed in a model system of micro-channels by the angle, size and position of attached side channels.

EXPERIMENTS

A flexible, rapid, and cost-effective method is used to produce micro-channels in gels. It involves 3D-printed moulds in which gels are cast. Open channels of micrometre size with several side channels on either one or two sides are produced with tilting angles of 10-170°. On a horizontal plane the meniscus of water driven by surface tension is tracked in the main channel.

FINDINGS

The presence of side channels on one side slowed down the speed of the meniscus in the main channel least. Channels having side channels on both sides with tilting angles of up to 30° indicated tremendously slower flow, and the liquid exhibited a stick-slip motion. Broader side channels decreased the speed more than thinner ones, as suggested by the hypothesis. Inertial forces are suggested to be important in branched channel systems studied here.

Short timescale wetting and penetration on porous sheets measured with ultrasound, direct absorption and contact angle

In this study the short timescale penetration and spreading of liquids on porous sheets is investigated. Three measurement techniques are evaluated: ultrasonic liquid penetration measurement (ULP), contact angle measurement (CA) and scanning absorptiometry (SA). With each of these techniques liquid penetration as well as surface wetting can be measured. A quantitative comparison between the methods is carried out. For our studies we are using model liquids with tuneable surface tension, viscosity and surface energy which are the governing parameters for pore flow according to the Lucas–Washburn equation. Scanning absorptiometry turns out to be an adequate tool for direct measurement for liquid penetration. Ultrasonic liquid penetration showed a stable correlation (R² = 0.70) to SA and thus also gives a suitable indication on the liquid penetration behaviour. Absorption of individual microliter drops measured in the CA instrument showed different results than the other two measurements. For characterisation of the wetting behaviour the measurement techniques gave substantially different results. We thus conclude that ULP and SA do not capture the wetting behaviour of liquids on paper in the same way as conventional contact angle measurement, it is unclear if their results are meaningful. Finally we are proposing two parameters indicating a combination of liquid penetration and wetting, the slope of the contact angle over time dθ/dt and a contact angle calculated from SA. These two parameters are moderately correlated, supporting the idea that they are indeed capturing a combination of liquid penetration and wetting. While our investigations are restricted to paper, we believe that the methods investigated here are generally applicable to study liquid absorption in thin porous media like microfluidic paper based analytical devices, thin porous storage media, membranes and the like. Our findings are highlighting the importance to have a match in timescale (time for penetration and wetting) and size scale (liquid amount supplied) between the testing method and the actual use case of the material, when analyzing wetting and penetration on porous materials.

Liquid penetration and wetting on thin, porous media is studied using three different measurement methods, and using testing liquids with tailored viscosity, polarity and surface tension.

Capillary uptake in macroporous compressible sponges

The capillarity-driven uptake of liquid in swellable, highly porous sponges is of significant industrial importance. Sponges prepared using polymers and their composites with carbon nanotubes and graphene have been reported, with extraordinary solvent uptake capacities and with the ability to separate oil from water. However, the effect of systematic variation of sponge characteristics on solvent uptake has not been investigated. Here, we report experiments that study capillary uptake in a variety of flexible, centimetre-sized macroporous cylindrical sponges. We used ice-templating to prepare a series of model macroporous sponges in which the porosity, modulus and composition were systematically varied. We investigated two kinds of sponge: (a) those composed purely of cross-linked polymers and (b) those prepared as composites of inorganic particles and polymers. Both kinds of sponge are flexible and exhibit elastic recovery after large compressive deformation. All sponges were characterized thoroughly with respect to their pore microstructure and elastic modulus. When one end of a sponge is plunged into a large reservoir, water rises through capillary action against gravity. We observed a transition from an inertial capillary regime, where the liquid column height rose linearly with time, t, to a viscous capillary regime, where the liquid height rose with time t^0.5. We showed that these results can be rationalized using analyses developed for rigid sponges. We combined differential momentum balance equations for uptake in rigid capillaries with the phenomenological Ergun-Forchheimer relations to account for the effect of the sponge microstructure. This approach works remarkably well in the viscous capillary regime and shows that capillary uptake is governed primarily by the total porosity and pore dimensions of soft sponges.
