Nickel-catalyzed hydrodefluorination/deuterodefluorination of CF3-alkenes with formic acid

The synthesis of deuterated gem-difluoroalkenes via selective deuterodefluorination of β-CF3-cinnamates using a nickel catalyst has been reported for the first time. Commercially available deuterated formic acid is a cheap and convenient deuterium source. The nickel-catalyst showed high selectivity for monodefluorination and avoided competitive reactions such as multiple defluorination or hydrogenation.

Green Molecular Transformation in Dual Catalysis: Photoredox Activation of Vitamin B12 Using Heterogeneous Photocatalyst

This concept focuses on dual-catalysis using metal complexes and heterogeneous photocatalysts. Vitamin B12 derivatives are sophisticated metal complexes that facilitate enzymatic reactions in the biological systems. The B12 enzymes inspired reactions catalytically proceed in dual-catalyst systems of B12 derivatives and heterogeneous photocatalysts, such as titanium oxide (TiO2) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), under light irradiation. The cobalt ions in B12 derivatives are effectively reduced by photoexcited photocatalysts, producing low-valent Co(I) species. The photoinduced nucleophilic Co(I) species react with an alkyl halide to form an organometallic complex with a Co-C bond. The Co-C bond dissociates during photolysis to generate alkyl radicals. Based on this mechanism, dual-catalysis effectively promotes various light-driven organic syntheses and light-driven dehalogenation reactions of toxic alkyl halides. The trends of the dual-catalyst system and recent progress in this field are discussed in this concept.

Photoredox-Catalyzed Acylchlorination of α-CF3 Alkenes with Acyl Chloride and Application as Masked Access to β-CF3-enones

We disclose a photocatalytic strategy that simultaneously addresses the construction of trifluoromethylated quaternary carbon centers and the preparation of β-CF3-enones through radical difunctionalization of α-CF3 alkenes with acyl chlorides. This method is characterized by its broad functional group compatibility, high efficiency, and atom economy. The versatility of this transformation is poised to broaden the applications of α-CF3 alkenes, providing new pathways for the rapid assembly of structurally diverse fluorinated compounds.

Nickel-Catalyzed Markovnikov-Selective Hydrodifluoromethylation of Alkynes Using BrCF2 H

A Markovnikov-selective hydrodifluoromethylation of alkynes with BrCF2 H via nickel catalysis is described. This protocol proceeds via a migratory insertion of nickel hydride to alkyne followed by a CF2 H-coupling, enabling straightforward access to diverse branched CF2 H-alkenes with high efficiency and exclusive regioselectivity. The mild condition applies to a wide array of aliphatic and aryl alkynes with good functional group compatibility. Mechanistic studies are presented to support the proposed pathway.

The inorganic chemistry of the cobalt corrinoids - an update

The inorganic chemistry of the cobalt corrinoids, derivatives of vitamin B₁₂, is reviewed, with particular emphasis on equilibrium constants for, and kinetics of, their axial ligand substitution reactions. The role the corrin ligand plays in controlling and modifying the properties of the metal ion is emphasised. Other aspects of the chemistry of these compounds, including their structure, corrinoid complexes with metals other than cobalt, the redox chemistry of the cobalt corrinoids and their chemical redox reactions, and their photochemistry are discussed. Their role as catalysts in non-biological reactions and aspects of their organometallic chemistry are briefly mentioned. Particular mention is made of the role that computational methods - and especially DFT calculations - have played in developing our understanding of the inorganic chemistry of these compounds. A brief overview of the biological chemistry of the B₁₂-dependent enzymes is also given for the reader's convenience.

Visible-light-induced defluorinative carbonylative coupling of alkyl iodides with α-trifluoromethyl substituted styrenes

A visible-light-mediated defluorinative carbonylative cross-coupling of alkyl iodides with α-trifluoromethyl styrenes has been developed. The reaction occurs at room temperature under blue light irradiation, and various gem-difluoroalkenes were obtained in moderate to good yields. Synthetic transformations of the obtained product were performed as well.

Tunable photocatalytic oxysulfonylation and chlorosulfonylation of α-CF3 alkenes with sulfonyl chlorides

Tunable photoredox-catalyzed chlorosulfonylation and oxysulfonylation of α-trifluoromethylstyrenes with sulfonyl chloride were facilely achieved by simply manipulating the photocatalyst and solvent.

Visible-Light-Driven Sulfonation of α-Trifluoromethylstyrenes: Access to Densely Functionalized CF3-Substituted Tertiary Alcohol

Reported herein is a visible-light-induced sulfonation of α-trifluoromethylstyrenes with sodium sulfinates, which provides a series of α-trifluoromethyl-β-sulfonyl tertiary alcohols. This new synthetic protocol is enabled by a charge-transfer complex between oxygen and sulfinates, featuring broad substrate scope and scalability. Excellent functional group compatibility and chemoselectivity render this method suitable for sulfonation of pharmaceutically relevant molecules. In the presence of D₂O, deuteriotrifluorinated products were also obtained, further demonstrating the flexibility and synthetic potentials of this strategy.

The preparation and properties of 1,1-difluorocyclopropane derivatives

Recently, the functionalization of organic molecules with fluorine substituents has grown rapidly due to its applications in such fields as medicine, agriculture or materials sciences. The aim of this article is to review the importance of 1,1-difluorocyclopropane derivatives in synthesis. It will examine the role of the fluorine substituents in both ring-forming and ring-opening reactions, as well as methods for obtaining difluorocyclopropanes as single enantiomers. Several examples are provided to highlight the biological importance of this class of compounds.

Multifaceted aspects of charge transfer

Charge transfer and charge transport are by far among the most important processes for sustaining life on Earth and for making our modern ways of living possible. Involving multiple electron-transfer steps, photosynthesis and cellular respiration have been principally responsible for managing the energy flow in the biosphere of our planet since the Great Oxygen Event. It is impossible to imagine living organisms without charge transport mediated by ion channels, or electron and proton transfer mediated by redox enzymes. Concurrently, transfer and transport of electrons and holes drive the functionalities of electronic and photonic devices that are intricate for our lives. While fueling advances in engineering, charge-transfer science has established itself as an important independent field, originating from physical chemistry and chemical physics, focusing on paradigms from biology, and gaining momentum from solar-energy research. Here, we review the fundamental concepts of charge transfer, and outline its core role in a broad range of unrelated fields, such as medicine, environmental science, catalysis, electronics and photonics. The ubiquitous nature of dipoles, for example, sets demands on deepening the understanding of how localized electric fields affect charge transfer. Charge-transfer electrets, thus, prove important for advancing the field and for interfacing fundamental science with engineering. Synergy between the vastly different aspects of charge-transfer science sets the stage for the broad global impacts that the advances in this field have.

Cobalt fluorides: preparation, reactivity and applications in catalytic fluorination and C-F functionalization

Recent advances in the investigation of cobalt fluorides in organofluorine chemistry are highlighted. The preparation and reactivity of inorganic and organometallic cobalt fluorides are discussed. The in-depth understanding of the structures and reactivity of cobalt fluorides allows chemists to develop diverse innovative catalytic fluorination and C-F functionalization.

Stereoselective Synthesis of Terminal Monofluoroalkenes from Trifluoromethylated Alkenes

Herein we report the hydrodefluorination reaction of trifluoromethylated alkenes to access terminal monofluoroalkenes. The use of LiAlH₄ allowed the stereoselective synthesis of the terminal monofluoroalkenes in good to excellent yields with good to excellent diastereoselectivities. Mechanistic studies suggested a hydroalumination reaction followed by a stereoselective fluoride elimination.

Polarity-Reversal Strategy for the Functionalization of Electrophilic Strained Molecules via Light-Driven Cobalt Catalysis

Strain-release-driven methodology is a powerful tool for accessing structural motifs, highly desirable by the pharmaceutical industry. The reactivity of spring-loaded cyclic reagents is dominated by transformations relying on their inherent electrophilic reactivity. Herein, we present a polarity-reversal strategy based on light-driven cobalt catalysis, which enables the generation of nucleophilic radicals through strain release. The applicability of this methodology is demonstrated by the design of two distinct types of reactions: Giese-type addition and Co/Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling. Moreover, a series of electrochemical, spectroscopic, and kinetic experiments as well as X-ray structural analysis of the intermediate alkylcobalt(III) complex give deeper insight into the mechanism of the reaction.

Catalyzing the Hydrodefluorination of CF3-Substituted Alkenes by PhSiH3. H• Transfer from a Nickel Hydride

The hydrodefluorination of CF₃-substituted alkenes can be catalyzed by a nickel(II) hydride bearing a pincer ligand. The catalyst loading can be as low as 1 mol%. gem-Difluoroalkenes containing a number of functional groups can be formed in good to excellent yields by a radical mechanism initiated by H• transfer from the nickel hydride. The relative reactivity of various substrates supports the proposed mechanism, as does a TEMPO trapping experiment.

Visible Light-Driven, One-pot Amide Synthesis Catalyzed by the B12 Model Complex under Aerobic Conditions

A visible light responsive catalytic system with the B₁₂ complex as the catalyst and [Ir(dtbbpy)(ppy)₂ ]PF₆ as the photosensitizer was developed. It provides a convenient and efficient way to synthesize amides. Based on this method, trichlorinated organic compounds were converted into amides in the presence of an amine under aerobic conditions at room temperature in a one-pot procedure. Various trichlorinated organic compounds and an amine source, such as primary, secondary, and cyclic amines, have been evaluated for this transformation, providing the expected products in moderate to excellent yields. Notably, product formation depended on the reaction atmosphere where the amide was obtained under aerobic conditions while partially dechlorinated products were obtained under anaerobic conditions. As this protocol is free from hazardous reagents, extra additives, noble metals, and dangerous gas, the present method provides a novel and efficient approach for amide synthesis under mild and easily controlled conditions.

Selective Copper Complex-Catalyzed Hydrodefluorination of Fluoroalkenes and Allyl Fluorides: A Tale of Two Mechanisms

The transition to more economically friendly small-chain fluorinated groups is leading to a resurgence in the synthesis and reactivity of fluoroalkenes. One versatile method to obtain a variety of commercially relevant hydrofluoroalkenes involves the catalytic hydrodefluorination (HDF) of fluoroalkenes using silanes. In this work it is shown that copper hydride complexes of tertiary phosphorus ligands (L) can be tuned to achieve selective multiple HDF of fluoroalkenes. In one example, HDF of the hexafluoropropene dimer affords a single isomer of heptafluoro-2-methylpentene in which five fluorines have been selectively replaced with hydrogens. DFT computational studies suggest a distinct HDF mechanisms for L₂CuH (bidentate or bulky monodentate phosphines) and L₃CuH (small cone angle monodentate phosphines) catalysts, allowing for stereocontrol of the HDF of trifluoroethylene.

Learning from B12 enzymes: biomimetic and bioinspired catalysts for eco-friendly organic synthesis

Cobalamins (B₁₂) play various important roles in vivo. Most B₁₂-dependent enzymes are divided into three main subfamilies: adenosylcobalamin-dependent isomerases, methylcobalamin-dependent methyltransferases, and dehalogenases. Mimicking these B₁₂ enzyme functions under non-enzymatic conditions offers good understanding of their elaborate reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, bio-inspiration offers a new approach to catalytic design for green and eco-friendly molecular transformations. As part of a study based on vitamin B₁₂ derivatives including heptamethyl cobyrinate perchlorate, we describe biomimetic and bioinspired catalytic reactions with B₁₂ enzyme functions. The reactions are classified according to the corresponding three B₁₂ enzyme subfamilies, with a focus on our recent development on electrochemical and photochemical catalytic systems. Other important reactions are also described, with a focus on radical-involved reactions in terms of organic synthesis.

Picking One out of Three: Selective Single C-F Activation in Trifluoromethyl Groups

The introduction of a trifluoromethyl (CF₃ ) group into an organic molecule can modify its chemical behavior and lead to changes in its physicochemical and pharmacological properties. The CF₃ group is often chosen for its chemical inertness and stability, which are related to the strong C-F bonds. In recent years, the potential of gaining straightforward access to difluorinated compounds through selective single C-F activation in CF₃ groups has been unveiled. This review describes the latest methodologies for the synthesis of difluoromethylated arenes, difluoroalkenes and difluorinated aldol products of potential synthetic and/or biological interest, employing low-valent metals, transition metal catalysis, FLP and Lewis acid mediated transformations as well as photoredox catalysis.

A Copper-Catalyzed Reductive Defluorination of β-Trifluoromethylated Enones via Oxidative Homocoupling of Grignard Reagents

An efficient copper-catalyzed reductive defluorination of β-trifluoromethylated enones via an oxidative homocoupling of Grignard reagents is reported. The reaction proceeded smoothly with a wide range of substrates, including the ones bearing aromatic heterocycles, such as furyl and thienyl ring systems in high yields (80-92%, except one example) under mild conditions. This provides a practical method for synthesis of gem-difluoroolefin ketones. It is also worth noting that this homocoupling process of Grignard reagents using β-trifluoromethylated enones as "oxidizing reagents" is effective for both the Csp²-Csp² and Csp³-Csp³ bond formations, including for substrates whose β-hydride elimination of the corresponding transition metal alkyl complex is particularly facile, affording coupling products with high yields (83-95%), simultaneously.

Enhanced photocatalytic activity of a B12-based catalyst co-photosensitized by TiO2 and Ru(ii) towards dechlorination

A novel hybrid photocatalyst denoted as B₁₂-TiO₂-Ru(ii) was prepared by co-immobilizing a B₁₂ derivative and trisbipyridine ruthenium (Ru(bpy)₃ ²⁺) on the surface of a mesoporous anatase TiO₂ microspheres and was characterized by DRS, XRD, SEM and BET et al. By using the hybrid photocatalyst, DDT was completely didechlorinated and a small part of tridechlorinated product was also detected in the presence of TEOA only after 30 min of visible light irradiation. Under simulated sunlight, the hybrid exhibited a significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for dechlorination compared with B₁₂-TiO₂ under the same condition or itself under visible light irradiation due to the additivity in the contribution of UV and visible part of the sunlight to the electron transfer. In addition, this hybrid catalyst can be easily reused without loss of catalytic efficiency. This is the first report on a B₁₂-based photocatalyst co-sensitized by two photosensitizers with wide spectral response.

A photocatalytic decarboxylative/defluorinative [4 + 3] annulation of o-hydroxyphenylacetic acids and trifluoromethyl alkenes: synthesis of fluorinated dihydrobenzoxepines

A photocatalytic decarboxylative/defluorinative [4 + 3] annulation of o-hydroxyphenylacetic acids and trifluoromethyl alkenes was developed. The reaction led to fluorinated dihydrobenzoxepines through two consecutive C–F substitutions in a CF₃ group.
