Synthetic Strategy for AB2-Type Arsines via Bidentate Dithiolate Leaving Groups

Despite their potential for several transition-metal-catalyzed reactions, arsenic ligands are poorly diversified. In this work, we developed an efficient synthetic methodology for AB₂-type ligands, which is a typical motif in phosphorus systems, for example, in Buchwald ligands. The introduction of 1,2-benzenedithiol to tribromoarsine reduces the reactivity of two of the three reaction sites. After the substitution reaction with the first nucleophile involving the elimination of bromide, the substitution reaction with the second nucleophile produced AB₂-type arsines through the elimination of the dithiolate anion. Among the various types of obtained AB₂-type arsines, the arsa-Buchwald ligands, which are arsenic analogues of Buchwald ligands, were applied to the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. Some of the arsa-Buchwald ligands showed activity comparable to that of the well-known Buchwald ligand, SPhos. Furthermore, the arsenic analogue of SPhos showed higher activity and stability than SPhos under open-air conditions.

The Pnictogen Bond: The Covalently Bound Arsenic Atom in Molecular Entities in Crystals as a Pnictogen Bond Donor

In chemical systems, the arsenic-centered pnictogen bond, or simply the arsenic bond, occurs when there is evidence of a net attractive interaction between the electrophilic region associated with a covalently or coordinately bound arsenic atom in a molecular entity and a nucleophile in another or the same molecular entity. It is the third member of the family of pnictogen bonds formed by the third atom of the pnictogen family, Group 15 of the periodic table, and is an inter- or intramolecular noncovalent interaction. In this overview, we present several illustrative crystal structures deposited into the Cambridge Structure Database (CSD) and the Inorganic Chemistry Structural Database (ICSD) during the last and current centuries to demonstrate that the arsenic atom in molecular entities has a significant ability to act as an electrophilic agent to make an attractive engagement with nucleophiles when in close vicinity, thereby forming σ-hole or π-hole interactions, and hence driving (in part, at least) the overall stability of the system’s crystalline phase. This overview does not include results from theoretical simulations reported by others as none of them address the signatory details of As-centered pnictogen bonds. Rather, we aimed at highlighting the interaction modes of arsenic-centered σ- and π-holes in the rationale design of crystal lattices to demonstrate that such interactions are abundant in crystalline materials, but care has to be taken to identify them as is usually done with the much more widely known noncovalent interactions in chemical systems, halogen bonding and hydrogen bonding. We also demonstrate that As-centered pnictogen bonds are usually accompanied by other primary and secondary interactions, which reinforce their occurrence and strength in most of the crystal structures illustrated. A statistical analysis of structures deposited into the CSD was performed for each interaction type As···D (D = N, O, S, Se, Te, F, Cl, Br, I, arene’s π system), thus providing insight into the typical nature of As···D interaction distances and ∠R–As···D bond angles of these interactions in crystals, where R is the remainder of the molecular entity.

Prospects for the production of radioisotopes and radiobioconjugates for theranostics

The development of diagnostic methods in medicine as well as the progress in the synthesis of biologically active compounds allows the use of selected radioisotopes for the simultaneous diagnosis and treatment of diseases, especially cancerous ones, in patients. This approach is called theranostic. This review article includes chemical and physical characterization of chosen theranostic radioisotopes and their compounds that are or could be useful in nuclear medicine.

Diazaphospholene and Diazaarsolene Derived Homogeneous Catalysis

The past 20 years has seen significant advances in main group chemistry and their use in catalysis. This Minireview showcases the recent emergence of phosphorus and arsenic containing heterocycles as catalysts. With that, we discuss how the Group 15 compounds diazaphospholenes, diazaarsolenes, and their cationic counterparts have proven to be highly effective catalysts for a wide range of reduction transformations. This Minireview highlights how the initial discovery by Gudat of the hydridic nature of the P−H bond in these systems led to these compounds being used as catalysts and discusses the wide range of examples currently present in the literature.

1,2-Benzenedithiol and Toluene-3,4-dithiol Arsenic(III) Complexes-Synthesis, Structure, Spectroscopic Characterization and Toxicological Studies

A new group of arsenic(III) complexes with bidentate S,S-donor ligands, 1,2-benzenedithiol (Ph(SH)₂) and toluene-3,4-dithiol (MePh(SH)₂), were synthesized. The use of arsenic(III) iodide and bromide promoted the formation of neutral complexes (1-4) with the general formula AsX(LS₂) (X = I or Br, L = MePh or Ph). The crystal structures of these compounds were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (scXRD). Unlike other arsenic(III) complexes, AsBr(PhS₂) complex (2) was found to crystallize with a rare 13 molecules in the asymmetric unit. The compounds were also characterized by conventional physico-chemical techniques (Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), elemental analysis (EA) and electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS)). The results from structural and spectroscopic studies were supported by DFT calculations using the B3LYP/LANL2DZ and (or) 6-31+G(d,p) approaches. The cytotoxicity of these complexes was estimated for human acute promyelocytic leukemia cell line (NB4). They exhibited remarkable cytotoxicities after 48 h of treatment with IC₅₀ equal to about 10 µM and 40 µM for complexes with 1,2-benzenedithiolato and toluene-3,4-dithiolato ligand, respectively. Their toxicity was lower than that of commonly used chemotherapeutic As₂O₃ (IC₅₀ = 1.4 µM).

Structure–property-reactivity studies on dithiaphospholes

The crystal structures of P-halo-1,2,3-dithiaphospholes and the reduced P–P coupled dimer are reported. Treatment with Lewis acids affords phosphenium cations which are shown to be active catalysts for hydroboration reactions.
