Preparation of carnation-like Ag-ZnO composites for enhanced photocatalysis under visible light

Carnation-like ZnO was synthesized by the facile precipitation method (at room temperature and in 120 min) to decompose dyes in an aqueous medium. The carnation-like ZnO had a stratified porous structure with a size of about 2-3μm, its petals had a smooth surface with a thickness of 5-10 nm and a width of about 300-500 nm. Ag-ZnO composites were synthesized using glucose with the assistance of PVP. The morphology of Ag-ZnO composites was almost unchanged compared to ZnO. Where, the Ag nanoparticles in the size range of 5-15 nm were uniformly dispersed on the ZnO petals, improving the catalytic ability of the composites in tartrazine (TA) degradation. The influence of Ag content on catalytic structure and performance of composite was studied. The 5Ag-ZnO sample had the highest BET surface area and pore volume and the lowest gap energy (Eg) among the as-synthesized samples. The 5Ag-ZnO sample proclaimed the degradation efficiency in 70 min of 97.8% and thek_apof 0.031 min^-1. The influences of catalyst content, solution pH, and concentration of dye on the photodegradation efficiency of the composite were thoroughly studied. Besides, the photocatalytic activity of the composite was demonstrated by degrading various organic substances and reusability. In addition, it was compared to a metal-semiconductor catalyst of Au-ZnO and semiconductor-semiconductor catalysts of MoS₂-ZnO, Cu₂O-ZnO, and SiO₂-ZnO. The catalytic mechanism under visible light was proposed.

Influence of Ag Photodeposition Conditions over SERS Intensity of Ag/ZnO Microspheres for Nanomolar Detection of Methylene Blue

Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is considered a versatile and multifunctional technique with the ability to detect molecules of different species at very low molar concentration. In this work, hierarchical ZnO microspheres (ZnO MSs) and Ag/ZnO MSs were fabricated and decorated by hydrothermal and photodeposition methods, respectively. For Ag deposition, precursor molar concentration (1.9 and 9.8 mM) and UV irradiation time (5, 15, and 30 min) were evaluated by SEM, TEM, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction showed a peak at 37.9° corresponding to the (111) plane of Ag, whose intensity increases as precursor concentration and UV irradiation time increases. SEM images confirmed the formation of ZnO MSs (from 2.5 to 4.5 µm) building by radially aligned two-dimensional ZnO nanosheets with thicknesses below 30 nm. The Raman spectra of Ag/ZnO MSs exhibited a vibration mode at 486 cm⁻¹ which can be directly associated to Ag deposition on ZnO MSs surface. The performance of SERS substrate was evaluated using rhodamine 6G. The SERS substrate grown at 9.8 mM during 30 min showed the best SERS activity and the ability to detect methylene blue at 10⁻⁹ M.

A hybrid design of Ag-decorated ZnO on layered nanomaterials (MgAC) with photocatalytic and antibacterial dual-functional abilities

In this work, Ag@ZnO and Ag@ZnO/MgAC photocatalysts were synthesized using a simple two-step electrochemical method by the addition of magnesium aminoclay (MgAC) as a great stabilizer and a Lewis base, which could donate electrons for reduction of Ag⁺ and Zn²⁺ ions, facilitating uniform formation as well as effective inhibition of aggregation of Ag@ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) on the MgAC matrix. Ag@ZnO and Ag@ZnO/MgAC were investigated for photocatalytic degradation of MB and their antibacterial efficiencies. Ag@ZnO/MgAC showed excellent photocatalytic MB degradation with a performance of 98.56% after 80 min of visible-light irradiation and good antibacterial activity against Salmonella (Sal) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacterial strains, providing promising high application potential. Herein, different from the bare ZnO NPs, for Ag@ZnO/MgAC nanocomposites, Ag@ZnO NPs functioned as an effective photocatalyst under visible light illumination, in which, incorporated Ag atoms in the ZnO crystal structure caused the increase in a larger number of lattice defect sites. Benefiting from the strong surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag and energy band matching between ZnO and Ag, the visible light absorption capacity and the separation of the photogenerated charge carriers were promoted. Therefore, the MB degradation efficiency of Ag@ZnO/MgAC was considerably accelerated in the presence of produced radicals from visible light illumination.

Photodeposition of Ag Nanocrystals onto TiO2 Nanotube Platform for Enhanced Water Splitting and Hydrogen Gas Production

Current work reports the study of Ag nanocrystals (NCs) decorated doubly anodized (DA) TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) thin film as an efficient photoelectrode material for water splitting and photocatalytic hydrogen gas production. DA process has been shown to be capable of producing less defective NTs and creating additional spacious gaps in between NT bundles to allow efficient and uniform integration of Ag NCs. By employing photoreduction method, Ag NCs can be deposited directly onto NTs, where the size and density of coverage can be maneuvered by merely varying the concentration of Ag precursors. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) images show that the Ag NCs with controllable size are homogeneously decorated onto the walls of NTs with random yet uniform distribution. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results confirm the formation of anatase TiO2 NTs and Ag NCs, which can be well indexed to standard patterns. The decoration of metallic Ag NCs onto the surface of NTs demonstrates a significant enhancement in the photoconversion efficiency as compared to that of pristine TiO2 NTs. Additionally, the as-prepared nanocomposite film also shows improved efficiency when used as a photocatalyst platform in the production of hydrogen gas. Such improvement in the performance of water splitting and photocatalytic hydrogen gas production activity can be credited to the surface plasmonic resonance of Ag NCs present on the surface of the NTs, which renders improved light absorption and better charge separation. The current work can serve as a model of study for designing more advanced nanoarchitecture photoelectrode for renewable energy application.

Tuning the Morphology and Properties of Nanostructured Cu-ZnO Thin Films Using a Two-Step Sputtering Technique

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a wide-band-gap semiconductor that is promising for use as a transparent conductive oxide film. To date, to improve their optoelectrical properties, pristine ZnO films have been doped with metals using various techniques. In this study, nanostructured Cu-ZnO thin films were synthesized using a modified two-step radio frequency magnetron sputtering technique with separate ZnO and metallic Cu targets. Controlling the timing of the Cu/ZnO co-sputtering and ZnO-only sputtering steps afforded a significant change in the resulting nanostructures, such as uniform Cu-ZnO and broccoli-structured Cu-ZnO thin films. Using various measurement techniques, the influence of Cu doping was analyzed in detail. Furthermore, a crystal growth model for the formation of the broccoli-like clusters was suggested. The Cu-ZnO thin films synthesized using this technique demonstrate a highly improved conductivity with some loss in optical transmittance.

An electrochemical approach towards the controllable synthesis of highly ordered and hierarchical zinc oxide dendritic crystals composed of hexagonal nanosheets: some insights into the stacking-assembly of the hierarchical architecture

Herein, an electrochemical synthetic approach is presented to produce a highly ordered and hierarchical zinc oxide dendrite architecture composed of hexagonal nanosheets.
