The Halogen Bond to Ethers - Prototypic Molecules and Experimental Electron Density

Halogen bonds to dialkyl ether molecules have remained largely unexplored. We here address the synthesis and the structural chemistry of the first halogen-bonded noncyclic alkyl ethers, combining 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene and the prototypic or commonly used ethers dimethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran, and methyl-tert-butyl ether as halogen acceptors. Two different structural motifs based on moderately strong halogen bonds were obtained: Discrete trimolecular aggregates are formed, and unexpected halogen-bonded supramolecular chain adducts feature oxygen-bifurcated halogen bonds with 1:1 donor:acceptor ratio. Both structure types may be selectively obtained even for the same ether by adjusting the stoichiometry in the crystallization experiments. The geometric features of the etheric oxygen center were found to be flexible, in contrast to the almost linear geometry about the halogen donor atom. A high-resolution X-ray diffraction experiment on the extended adduct of dimethyl ether allowed us to study the electronic details of the acceptor-bifurcated I···O···I halogen bonds. The electron density in the bond critical points and derived properties such as the Laplacian indicate essentially electrostatic interactions and explain the geometrical flexibility of ethers in halogen bonds. Our studies demonstrate the great versatility of ethers as halogen bond acceptors, that can occur in many geometrical arrangements and whose contribution to nature's structural designs should not be underestimated.

Ortho-Substituent Effects on Halogen Bond Geometry for N-Haloimide⋯2-Substituted Pyridine Complexes

The nature of (imide)N-X⋯N(pyridine) halogen-bonded complexes formed by six N-haloimides and sixteen 2-substituted pyridines are studied using X-ray crystallography (68 crystal structures), Density Functional Theory (DFT) (86 complexation energies), and NMR spectroscopy (90 association constants). Strong halogen bond (XB) donors such as N-iodosuccinimide form only 1:1 haloimide:pyridine crystalline complexes, but even stronger N-iodosaccharin forms 1:1 haloimide:pyridine and three other distinct complexes. In 1:1 haloimide:pyridine crystalline complexes, the haloimide's N─X bond exhibits an unusual bond bending feature that is larger for stronger N-haloimides. DFT complexation energies (ΔEXB ) for iodoimide-pyridine complexes range from -44 to -99 kJ mol-1 , while for N-bromoimide-pyridine, they are between -31 and -77 kJ mol-1 . The ΔEXB of I⋯N XBs in 1:1 iodosaccharin:pyridine complexes are the largest of their kind, but they are substantially smaller than those in [bis(saccharinato)iodine(I)]pyridinium salts (-576 kJ mol-1 ), formed by N-iodosaccharin and pyridines. The NMR association constants and ΔEXB energies of 1:1 haloimide:pyridine complexes do not correlate as these complexes in solution are heavily influenced by secondary interactions, which DFT studies do not account for. Association constants follow the σ-hole strengths of N-haloimides, which agree with DFT and crystallography data. The haloimide:2-(N,N-dimethylamino)pyridine complex undergoes a halogenation reaction resulting in 5-iodo-2-dimethylaminopyridine.

Conservation of the Hydrogen-Bonded Pyridone Homosynthon in Halogen-Bonded Cocrystals

Seven cocrystals of pyridone and perfluorinated halocarbons have been prepared. In all cases pairs of pyridone molecules are connected into dimers by two N-H···O hydrogen bonds, forming the characteristic pyridone homosynthon of R₂ ²(8) topology. These dimers further act as acceptors of halogen bonds through the two pyridone oxygen atoms, forming two (in six cases) or three (in one case) halogen bonds with the donor molecules. The stoichiometry of the cocrystals obtained and the overall topology of the supramolecular architecture depend primarily on the topicity of the halogen bond donor, with the monotopic donor yielding a cocrystal of 1:1 stoichiometry comprising discrete supramolecular complexes, the ditopic donors cocrystals of 1:2 stoichiometry comprising chains, and the tritopic donor a cocrystal of 1:2 stoichiometry comprising hydrogen- and halogen-bonded layers. The results indicate that the pyridone homosynthon is a robust and reliable supramolecular synthon that is conserved in halogen-bonded cocrystals of pyridone.

Ternary Cocrystals with Large Soft Cavities: A 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (DITFB)⋅4-Biphenylpyridine N-oxide (BPNO) Host Assembled by Inclusion of Planar Aromatic Guests

A large soft-cavity host composed of 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (DITFB) and 4-biphenylpyridine N-oxide (BPNO) is assembled under the mediation of a planar aromatic guest molecule (pyrene or perylene) through C-I⋅⋅⋅^- O-N⁺ halogen bonds and π-hole⋅⋅⋅π bonds. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that guest molecules can be completely encapsulated in the four-layer host cavity to assemble ternary host-guest cocrystals; namely, Pyr@DITFB ⋅ BPNO and Per@DITFB ⋅ BPNO. The luminescence of these ternary cocrystals originates from their discrete guest molecules, which exhibit pure-blue and yellow emissions, respectively, that are localized at 425 nm and in the range of 485 to 578 nm, respectively. In addition, the contribution of different fragments to the stabilization of the crystal structure is estimated by computational chemistry. These cocrystals have significant potential for use in optical applications or materials, such as photonics or organic light-emitting diodes, respectively, that require to avoid the aggregation between luminophores.

Halogen bonds in 2,5-dihalopyridine-copper(ii) chloride complexes

In the (2,5-dihalopyridine)₂·CuCl₂ complexes varying the C5-position halogens affects the halogen bonding properties so that the C5–X5⋯Cl–Cu halogen bonds follow the order F5 < Cl5 < Br5 < I5 when the substituent at 2-position is chlorine and Cl5 < Br5 < I5 when it is bromine.
