Isothiocyanate Sulfur Atom as an Acceptor Site for Halogen-Bonded Cocrystallization of Werner Ni(II) Coordination Compounds and Perfluorinated Iodobenzenes

We explore the halogen bond acceptor potential of the isothiocyanate sulfur atom in the synthesis of cocrystals involving metal-organic building blocks by using Werner Ni(II) coordination compounds whose pendant isothiocyanate group enables halogen bonding. A series of 14 cocrystals involving octahedral Ni(L)4(NCS)2 coordination compounds (L = pyridine or 4-methylpyridine) has been prepared by both crystallization from solution and liquid-assisted grinding. The effectiveness of this strategy is demonstrated by the assembly of a large family of cocrystals involving five perfluorinated iodobenzenes. For both coordination compounds, we generally obtained one cocrystal with each donor; in one case, we obtained an additional two stoichiomorphs, and in another, we obtained three additional solvates. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments revealed that building units in all cocrystals are connected via S···I halogen bonds involving the donor iodine atom and the isothiocyanate sulfur atom, which is an acceptor of two and, in some cases, even three halogen bonds. Consequently, both coordination compounds act as multitopic acceptors that can form multiple halogen bonds leading to the formation of one-, two-, and three-dimensional halogen-bonded architectures. The relative shortenings of S···I distances are from 7 to 15%, while the S···I-C angles are in the range from 160 to 180°.

Halogen Bonding and CO-Ligand Blue-Shift in Hybrid Organic—Organometallic Cocrystals [CpFe(CO)2X] (C2I4) (X = Cl, Br)

This work is focused on the complex interplay of geometry of I⋯X halogen bonds (HaB) and intermolecular interaction energy in two isomorphic cocrystals [CpFe(CO)2X] (C2I4) (X = Cl (1), Br (2)). Their IR-spectroscopic measurements in solid state and solution demonstrate the blue-shift of CO vibration bands, resulting from I⋯X HaB. The reluctance of their iodide congener [CpFe(CO)2I] to form the expected cocrystal [CpFe(CO)2I] (C2I4) is discussed in terms of different molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) of the surface of iodide ligands, as compared with chloride and bromide, which dictate a different angular geometry of HaB around the metal-I and metal-Br/Cl HaB acceptors. This study also suggests C2I4 as a reliable HaB donor coformer for metal-halide HaB acceptors in the crystal engineering of hybrid metal–organic systems.

Long-range supramolecular synthon polymorphism: a case study of two new polymorphic cocrystals of Ph2Te2–1,4-C6F4I2

Two new polymorphic forms of Ph2Te2–1,4-C6F4I2 cocrystals feature an unusual packing of Ph2Te2 molecules, which is typical for native Ph2Se2 but not Ph2Te2. This suggests the existence the yet unknown, Ph2Se2-like polymorph of Ph2Te2.

Synthesis and Characterization of Bidentate Isonitrile Iron Complexes

The divalent iron complexes trans-[FeBr2(BINC)2], [Cp*FeCl(BINC)] (Cp* = Me5C5), and [FeBr2(CNAr3NC)2] with the chelating bis(isonitrile) ligands BINC (bis(2-isocyanophenyl)phenylphosphonate) and CNAr3NC (2,2″-diisocyano-3,5,3″,5"tetramethyl-1,1':3',1″-terphenyl) have been prepared and characterized. Their subsequent reduction yields the di- and trinuclear compounds [Fe3(BINC)6], [Cp*Fe(BINC)]2, [Fe(CNAr3NC)2]2, and [K(Et2O)]2[Fe(CNAr3NC)2]2. The molecular structures of all new species were determined by X-ray crystallography and compared to those of related iron carbonyl complexes, demonstrating that the bidentate isonitrile ligands are capable surrogates for two CO ligands with only minimal distortion of the tetrahedral or octahedral geometry of the parent complexes. The complexes were further characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy, and the electrochemical properties of selected compounds were analyzed by UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry.

Crystal engineering strategies towards halogen-bonded metal–organic multi-component solids: salts, cocrystals and salt cocrystals

This highlight presents an overview of the current advances in the preparation of halogen bonded metal–organic multi-component solids, including salts and cocrystals comprising neutral and ionic constituents.

Halogen bonding in the co-crystallization of potentially ditopic diiodotetrafluorobenzene: a powerful tool for constructing multicomponent supramolecular assemblies

Halogen bonding is emerging as a significant driving force for supramolecular self-assembly and has aroused great interest during the last two decades. Among the various halogen-bonding donors, we take notice of the ability of 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (1,4-DITFB) to co-crystallize with diverse halogen-bonding acceptors in the range from neutral Lewis bases (nitrogen-containing compounds, N-oxides, chalcogenides, aromatic hydrocarbons and organometallic complexes) to anions (halide ions, thio/selenocyanate ions and tetrahedral oxyanions), leading to a great variety of supramolecular architectures such as discrete assemblies, 1D infinite chains and 2D/3D networks. Some of them act as promising functional materials (e.g. fluorescence, phosphorescence, optical waveguide, laser, non-linear optics, dielectric and magnetism) and soft materials (e.g. liquid crystal and supramolecular gel). Here we focus on the supramolecular structures of multicomponent complexes and their related physicochemical properties, highlight representative examples and show clearly the main directions that remain to be developed and improved in this area. From the point of view of crystal engineering and supramolecular chemistry, the complexes summarized here should give helpful information for further design and investigation of the elusive category of halogen-bonding supramolecular functional materials.

Halogen bonding in crystals of free 1,2-diiodo-ethene (C2H2I2) and its π-complex [CpMn(CO)2](π-C2H2I2)

1,2-trans-diiodo-ethene (C2H2I2) – is an overlooked halogen bond donor, which demonstrate the distinct similarity of the geometry and directionality of I···I halogen bonds around the iodine atoms in its native and CpMn(CO)2(C2H2I2) π-complex crystals. Distortion of the planar geometry of C2H2I2 upon the π-coordination result the distortion of the native planar layered geometry of C2H2I2, so that [CpMn(CO)2](π-C2H2I2) features more complex I···I XB assisted 3D network. Unusual structural parallels between the native C2H2I2 crystals and solid iodine are discussed.

Chimeric supramolecular synthons in Ph2Te2(I2)Se

Iodination of Ph₂Te₂Se by molecular iodine is directed towards the Te atom and yields {diiodo[(phenyltellanyl)selanyl]-λ⁴-tellanyl}benzene, PhTeSeTeI₂Ph or C₁₂H₁₀I₂SeTe₂. The molecule can be considered as a chimera of PhTeSeR, PhTeSeTePh and R'TeI₂Ph fragments. The crystal structure features a complex interplay of the supramolecular synthons Te...π(Ph), Se...Te and I...Te, combining molecules into a three-dimensional framework. Their combination affords long-range supramolecular synthons which are fused in a way resembling the mythological chimera and could be defined as chimeric supramolecular synthons. The energies of the intermolecular interactions have also been calculated and analyzed.

The combination of halogen and hydrogen bonding: a versatile tool in coordination chemistry

4-Iodo-N-(4-pyridyl)benzamide (INPBA) and four derived coordination complexes were synthesized in order to explore the combination of halogen and hydrogen bonding interactions in coordination chemistry.

Influence of halogen bonding on gold(i)-ligand bond components and DFT characterization of a gold-iodine halogen bond

A gold(i) complex bearing nitrogen acyclic carbene (NAC) and selenourea (SeU) has been used to verify whether the second-sphere SeI halogen bond (XB) is able to modify the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson components of the Au-C and Au-Se bonds. The chosen system was found to be thermically unstable but it allowed an in-depth theoretical study by means of Energy Decomposition Analysis, Natural Bond Orbital and Natural Orbitals for Chemical Valence methods, coupled with Charge Displacement analysis. Indeed, in the presence of iodoperfluoroalkanes as XB donors, iodine interacts with the lone pair of the coordinated selenium, enhancing the Au ← C σ donation and depressing the Au → C π back-donation, as demonstrated also by the increase of the rotational barrier of the C-N bond of the NAC (see G. Ciancaleoni and others, Chem. - Eur. J., 2015, 21, 2467). On the other hand, in the presence of N-iodosuccinimide (NIS), the gold directly establishes a XB with the iodine by using its d lone pairs. This AuI XB is favored by the low steric hindrance of the ligands coordinated to the gold and the presence of the amino protons of SeU, which establish additional hydrogen bonds with the NIS. Also in this case, the effect is to increase the σ acidity and decrease the π basicity of the metal.

Extended Assemblies of Ru(bpy)(CO)2X2 (X = Cl, Br, I) Molecules Linked by 1,4-Diiodotetrafluoro-Benzene (DITFB) Halogen Bond Donors

The ruthenium carbonyl compounds, Ru(bpy)(CO)2X2 (X = Cl, Br or I) act as neutral halogen bond (XB) acceptors when co-crystallized with 1,4-diiodotetrafluoro-benzene (DITFB). The halogen bonding strength of the Ru-X⋅⋅⋅I halogen bonds follow the nucleophilic character of the halido ligand. The strongest halogen bond occurs between the chlorido ligand and the iodide atoms of the DITFB. All three halogen bonded complexes form polymeric assemblies in the solid state. In Ru(bpy)(CO)2Cl2⋅DITFB (1) and in Ru(bpy)(CO)2Br2⋅DITFB (2) both halido ligands are halogen bonded to only one DITFB donor. In Ru(bpy)(CO)2I2⋅DITFB (3) only one of the halido ligands is involved in halogen bonding acting as ditopic center for two DITFB donors. The polymeric structures of 1 and 2 are isomorphic wave-like single chain systems, while the iodine complexes form pairs of linear chains attached together with weak F⋅⋅⋅O≡C interactions between the closest neighbors. The stronger polarization of the iodide ligand compared to the Cl or Br ligands favors nearly linear C-I⋅⋅⋅I angles between the XB donor and the metal complex supporting the linear arrangement of the halogen bonded chain.

Halogen-bonded cocrystallization with phosphorus, arsenic and antimony acceptors

The formation of non-covalent directional interactions, such as hydrogen or halogen bonds, is a central concept of materials design, which hinges on using small compact atoms of the 2nd period, notably nitrogen and oxygen, as acceptors. Heavier atoms are much less prominent in that context, and mostly limited to sulfur. Here, we report the experimental observation and theoretical study of halogen bonds to phosphorus, arsenic and antimony in the solid state. Combining 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene with triphenylphosphine, -arsine, and -stibine provides cocrystals based on I···P, I···As and I···Sb halogen bonds. The demonstration that increasingly metallic pnictogens form halogen bonds sufficiently strong to enable cocrystal formation is an advance in supramolecular chemistry which opens up opportunities in materials science, as shown by colossal thermal expansion of the cocrystal involving I···Sb halogen bonds.

Halogen bonding can be exploited for the design of functional supramolecular materials, but heavier elements that are known to accept a halogen bond remain limited. Here, the authors demonstrate the formation of two-component cocrystals based on halogen bonds with phosphorus, arsenic and antimony.

The energy frameworks of aufbau synthon modules in 4-cyanopyridine co-crystals

Halogen bonding of the aldehyde oxygen atom in cocrystals of aromatic aldehydes and 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene

Novel halogen bonded cocrystals of aromatic aldehydes have been synthesized. We present the halogen bond acceptor potential of the aldehyde group oxygen atom in competition with the hydroxy, methoxy and pyridine groups.

Simple design for metal-based halogen-bonded cocrystals utilizing the M–Cl⋯I motif
