Abstract
Merocyanines, thanks to their easily adjustable electronic structure, appear to be the most versatile and promising functional dyes. Their D-π-A framework offers ample opportunities for custom design through variations in both donor/acceptor end-groups and the π-conjugated polymethine chain, and leads to a broad range of practical properties, including noticeable solvatochromism, high polarizability/hyperpolarizabilities, and the ability to sensitize various physicochemical processes. Accordingly, merocyanines are applied and extensively studied in various fields, such as light-converting materials for optoelectronics, nonlinear optics, optical storage, solar cells, fluorescent probes, and antitumor agents in photodynamic therapy. This review encompasses both classical and novel more important publications on the structure-property relationships in merocyanines, with particular emphasis on the results by A. I. Kiprianov and his followers in Institute of Organic Chemistry in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Abstract
Exciton interactions are not only observed in assembled molecules but also in compounds with multiple chromophores referred to as superchromophores. We have developed isomeric bis-squaraine dyes as superchromophores in which two squaraine chromophores are fused onto the isomeric benzodipyrrole skeleton so as to regulate conformations and to reduce distances between two chromophores. The dyes with benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b']dipyrrole and benzo[1,2-b:5,4-b']dipyrrole moieties exhibited split electronic absorption originated from the intramolecular exciton interaction. The intensity of the split absorption bands varies in correlation with the orientation of chromophores. The isomeric dye with benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dipyrrole moiety exhibited a near-infrared absorption associated with the resonance throughout two chromophores. Their electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties are distinct from those of monomeric dyes owing to electronic interactions between the two chromophores. Thus, the structural isomerism of the central skeleton significantly affects their optical properties as well as their electrochemical properties.

Abstract
![]()
A boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivative
bearing a cis-proline residue at the meso-position crystallizes
in the form of platelets with strong (i.e., ΦF =
0.34) red fluorescence, but the absorption and emission spectra differ
markedly from those for dilute solutions. A key building block for
the crystal is a pseudo-dimer where hydrogen bonding
aligns the proline groups and separates the terminal chromophores
by ca. 25 Å. Comparison with a covalently linked bichromophore
suggests that one-dimensional (1D) excitonic coupling between the
terminals is too small to perturb the optical properties. However,
accretion of the pseudo-dimer forms narrow channels
possessing a high density of chromophores. The resultant absorption
spectrum exhibits strong excitonic splitting, which can be explained
quantitatively using the extended dipole approach and allowing for
coupling between ca. 30 BODIPY units. Fluorescence, which decays with
a lifetime of 2.2 ns, is assigned to a delocalized and (slightly)
super-radiant BODIPY dimer situated at the interface and populated
via electronic energy transfer from the interior.

Abstract
Merocyanine (MC) dyes exhibit facile synthesis and attractive optical properties, making them widely studied as the donor materials in organic solar cells (OSCs). In this study, for the first time, simple indole-based MCs are successfully designed as unfused nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) for OSCs by forming dimers with A-D-π-D-A structure, which possess enhanced photostability compared to the well-known ITIC acceptor and high electron mobility in blend films. When blended with P3HT donor, one of the dimers, i. e. Z2, shows a good cell efficiency of 3.53 %, which outperforms the performance of most of P3HT/NFA blends, particularly for unfused systems, and thus indicates good potential of simple MCs as NFAs.

Abstract
Inhibition of Leishmania infantum trypanothione disulfide reductase (LiTryR) by disruption of its homodimeric interface has proved to be an alternative and unexploited strategy in the search for novel antileishmanial agents. Proof of concept was first obtained by peptides and peptidomimetics. Building on previously reported dimerization disruptors containing an imidazole-phenyl-thiazole scaffold, we now report a new 1,2,3-triazole-based chemotype that yields noncompetitive, slow-binding inhibitors of LiTryR. Several compounds bearing (poly)aromatic substituents dramatically improve the ability to disrupt LiTryR dimerization relative to reference imidazoles. Molecular modeling studies identified an almost unexplored hydrophobic region at the interfacial domain as the putative binding site for these compounds. A subsequent structure-based design led to a symmetrical triazole analogue that displayed even more potent inhibitory activity over LiTryR and enhanced leishmanicidal activity. Remarkably, several of these novel triazole-bearing compounds were able to kill both extracellular and intracellular parasites in cell cultures.

Abstract
We report herein the solution and solid-state studies of conformationally flexible multidecker naphthalenediimides (NDIs) in which the chromophoric NDI units intramolecularly assemble into a series of discrete π-stacks. The X-ray crystallography reveals the existence of exclusively all-syn NDIs orientations in lower congeners while all-anti in a higher congener, suggesting short- to long-range π···π interactions throughout the slipped πNDI chromophoric array. The UV/vis and fluorescence spectra evaluate the discrete π-stacks by remarkable optical changes upon cooling in solution. Furthermore, we carried out a systematic electrochemical investigation to gain an insight into redox properties of the long-range π-stacked structures. The higher congener (5NDI) shows a ten-electron reversible reduction process in a small working potential window (∼0.8 V). To our knowledge, this is an unusual observation in an organic molecular system to undergo up to ten-electron reduction. These results pave the way to design multidecker π-stacks in which structural control with specific electronic properties would be engineered.

Abstract
Unexpectedly bright photoluminescence emission can be observed in materials incorporating inorganic carbon when their size is reduced from macro–micro to nano. At present, there is no consensus in its understanding, and many suggested explanations are not consistent with the broad range of experimental data. In this Review, I discuss the possible role of collective excitations (excitons) generated by resonance electronic interactions among the chromophore elements within these nanoparticles. The Förster-type resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism of energy migration within nanoparticles operates when the composing fluorophores are the localized electronic systems interacting at a distance. Meanwhile, the resonance interactions among closely located fluorophores may lead to delocalization of the excited states over many molecules resulting in Frenkel excitons. The H-aggregate-type quantum coherence originating from strong coupling among the transition dipoles of adjacent chromophores in a co-facial stacking arrangement and exciton transport to emissive traps are the basis of the presented model. It can explain most of the hitherto known experimental observations and must stimulate the progress towards their versatile applications.
