A Case-Study on the Photophysics of Chalcogen-Substituted Zinc(II) Phthalocyanines

Singlet dioxygen has been widely applied in different disciplines such as medicine (photodynamic therapy or blood sterilization), remediation (wastewater treatment) or industrial processes (fine chemicals synthesis). Particularly, it can be conveniently generated by energy transfer between a photosensitizer's triplet state and triplet dioxygen upon irradiation with visible light. Among the best photosensitizers, substituted zinc(II) phthalocyanines are prominent due to their excellent photophysical properties, which can be tuned by structural modifications, such as halogen- and chalcogen-atom substitution. These patterns allow for the enhancement of spin-orbit coupling, commonly attributed to the heavy atom effect, which correlates with the atomic number ( Z ${Z}$ ) and the spin-orbit coupling constant ( ζ ${\zeta }$ ) of the introduced heteroatom. Herein, a fully systematic analysis of the effect exerted by chalcogen atoms on the photophysical characteristics (absorption and fluorescence properties, lifetimes and singlet dioxygen photogeneration), involving 30 custom-made β-tetrasubstituted chalcogen-bearing zinc(II) phthalocyanines is described and evaluated regarding the heavy atom effect. Besides, the intersystem crossing rate constants are estimated by several independent methods and a quantitative profile of the heavy atom is provided by using linear correlations between relative intersystem crossing rates and relative atomic numbers. Good linear trends for both intersystem crossing rates (S1-T1 and T1-S0) were obtained, with a dependency on the atomic number and the spin-orbit coupling constant scaling asZ 0 . 4 ${{Z}^{0.4}}$ andζ 0 . 2 ${{\zeta }^{0.2}}$ , respectively The trend shows to be independent of the solvent and temperature.

Solvent effects on the photoinduced charge separation dynamics of directly linked zinc phthalocyanine-perylenediimide dyads: a nonadiabatic dynamics simulation with an optimally tuned screened range-separated hybrid functional

Herein, we have employed a combination of the optimally tuned screened range-separated hybrid (OT-SRSH) functional, the polarizable continuum model (PCM), and nonadiabatic dynamics (NAMD) simulations to investigate the photoinduced dynamics of directly linked donor-acceptor dyads formed using zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and perylenediimide (PDI), in which ZnPc is the donor while PDI is the acceptor. Our simulations aim to analyze the behavior of these dyads upon local excitation of the ZnPc moiety in the gas phase and in benzonitrile. Our findings indicate that the presence of a solvent can significantly influence the excited state dynamics of ZnPc-PDI dyads. Specifically, the polar solvent benzonitrile effectively lowers the vertical excitation energies of the charge transfer (CT) state from ZnPc to PDI. As a result, the energetic order of the locally excited (LE) states of ZnPc and the CT states is reversed compared to the gas phase. Consequently, the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) dynamics from ZnPc to PDI, which is absent in the gas phase, takes place in benzonitrile with a time constant of 10.4 ps. Importantly, our present work not only qualitatively agrees with experimental results but also provides in-depth insights into the underlying mechanisms responsible for the photoinduced dynamics of ZnPc-PDI. Moreover, this study emphasizes the importance of appropriately considering solvent effects in NAMD simulation of organic donor-acceptor systems, taking into account the distinct excited state dynamics observed in the gas phase and benzonitrile. Furthermore, the combination of the OT-SRSH functional, the PCM solvent model, and nonadiabatic dynamics simulations shows promise as a strategy for investigating the complex excited state dynamics of organic donor-acceptor systems in solvents. These findings will be valuable for the future design of novel organic donor-acceptor structures with improved performance.

Photoinduced Cascading Charge Transfer in Perylene Bisimide-Based Triads

We synthesize three perylene bisimide-based triads with donor-acceptor-acceptor (D∼A₁-A₂) architectures, in which the distance between D and A₁ is varied to study its influence on the excited state electron processes. Very different intramolecular charge transfer (D⁺∼A₁-A₂^-) lifetimes in dichloromethane (DCM) for these three triads are revealed by steady-state and transient spectroscopies. Free-energy changes of charge transfer (CT) are calculated based on the single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and electrochemical measurements. The results show that photoinduced cascading CT comprises two competing processes in DCM (CTs in D∼A1 units and in A1-A2 units) by pumping of the A1 unit, and then the long-distance CT state is formed. The charge recombination (CR) process is restrained effectively by the increased distance between the anion and cation. This research reveals the importance of multistep cascading CTs on tuning the CT lifetime in multichromophoric systems.

Identification of Nonradiative Decay Pathways in Cy3

Photoexcited fluorescent markers are extensively used in spectroscopy, imaging, and analysis of biological systems. The performance of fluorescent markers depends on high levels of emission, which are limited by competing nonradiative decay pathways. Small-molecule fluorescent dyes have been increasingly used as markers due to their high and stable emission. Despite their prevalence, the nonradiative decay pathways of these dyes have not been determined. Here, we investigate these pathways for a widely used indocarbocyanine dye, Cy3, using transient grating spectroscopy. We identify a nonradiative decay pathway via a previously unknown dark state formed within ∼1 ps of photoexcitation. Our experiments, in combination with electronic structure calculations, suggest that the generation of the dark state is mediated by picosecond vibrational mode coupling, likely via a conical intersection. We further identify the vibrational modes, and thus structural elements, responsible for the formation and dynamics of the dark state, providing insight into suppressing nonradiative decay pathways in fluorescent markers such as Cy3.

Electronic Energy Transfer in a Subphthalocyanine-Zn Porphyrin Dimer Studied by Linear and Nonlinear Ultrafast Spectroscopy

The efficient harvesting and transport of visible light by electronic energy transfer (EET) are critical to solar energy conversion in both nature and molecular electronics. In this work, we study EET in a synthetic dyad comprising a visible absorbing subphthalocyanine (SubPc) donor and a Zn tetraphenyl porphyrin (ZnTPP) acceptor. Energy transfer is probed by steady-state spectroscopy, ultrafast transient absorption, and two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy. Steady-state and time-resolved experiments point to only weak electronic coupling between the components of the dimer. The weak coupling supports energy transfer from the SubPc to the zinc porphyrin in 7 ps, which itself subsequently undergoes intersystem crossing to populate the triplet state. The rate of the forward energy transfer is discussed in terms of the structure of the dimer, which is calculated by density functional theory. There is evidence of back energy transfer from the ZnTPP on the hundreds of picoseconds time scale. Sub-picosecond spectral diffusion was also observed and characterized, but it does not influence the picosecond energy transfer.
