Abstract
Trans-disubstituted porphyrins are highly valuable intermediates across diverse fields, but they pose a significant synthesis challenge in some cases due to scrambling and formation of complex mixtures. Conditions that minimize scrambling also lower yields, but steric hindrance around the meso-aryl substituent can effectively suppress scrambling altogether. Here we report a straightforward approach to valuable trans-A2B2 porphyrin intermediates that are otherwise very difficult to obtain, through use of removable blocking bromide substituents.

Abstract
The photophysics of biochromophore ions often depends on the isomeric or protomeric distribution, yet this distribution, and the individual isomer contributions to an action spectrum, can be difficult to quantify. Here, we use two separate photodissociation action spectroscopy instruments to record electronic spectra for protonated forms of the green (pHBDI+) and cyan (Cyan+) fluorescent protein chromophores. One instrument allows for cryogenic (T = 40 ± 10 K) cooling of the ions, while the other offers the ability to perform protomer-selective photodissociation spectroscopy. We show that both chromophores are generated as two protomers when using electrospray ionisation, and that the protomers have partially overlapping absorption profiles associated with the S1 ← S0 transition. The action spectra for both species span the 340-460 nm range, although the spectral onset for the pHBDI+ protomer with the proton residing on the carbonyl oxygen is red-shifted by ≈40 nm relative to the lower-energy imine protomer. Similarly, the imine and carbonyl protomers are the lowest energy forms of Cyan+, with the main band for the carbonyl protomer red-shifted by ≈60 nm relative to the lower-energy imine protomer. The present strategy for investigating protomers can be applied to a wide range of other biochromophore ions.

Abstract
Symmetry breaking charge separation (SBCS) is central to photochemical energy conversion. The widely studied 9,9-bianthryl (9,9'BA) is the prototype, but the role of bianthryl structure is hardly investigated. Here we investigate excited state structural dynamics in a bianthryl of reduced symmetry, 1,9-bianthryl (1,9'BA), through ultrafast electronic and vibrational spectroscopy. Resonance selective Raman in polar solvents reveals a Franck-Condon state mode that disappears concomitant with the rise of ring breathing modes of radical species. Solvent-dependent dynamics show that CS is driven by solvent orientational motion, as in 9,9'BA. In nonpolar solvents the excited state undergoes multistep structural relaxation, including subpicosecond Franck-Condon state decay and biexponential diffusion-controlled structural evolution to a distorted slightly polar state. These data suggest two possible routes to SBCS; the established solvent driven pathway in rapidly relaxing polar solvents and, in slowly relaxing media, initial intramolecular reorganization to a polar structure which drives solvent orientational relaxation.

Abstract
Knowledge of the factors controlling excited state dynamics in excitonically coupled dimers and higher aggregates is critical for understanding natural and artificial solar energy conversion. In this work, we report ultrafast solvent polarity dependent excited state dynamics of the structurally well‐defined subphthalocyanine dimer, μ‐OSubPc2. Stationary electronic spectra demonstrate strong exciton coupling in μ‐OSubPc2. Femtosecond transient absorption measurements reveal ultrafast excimer formation from the initially excited exciton, mediated by intramolecular structural evolution. In polar solvents the excimer state decays directly through symmetry breaking charge transfer to form a charge separated state. Charge separation occurs under control of solvent orientational relaxation.

Abstract
Phthalocyanines and porphyrins are often the scaffolds of choice for use in widespread applications. Synthetic advances allow bespoke derivatives to be made, tailoring their properties. The selective synthesis of unsymmetrical systems, particularly phthalocyanines, has remained a significant unmet challenge. Porphyrin-phthalocyanine hybrids offer the potential to combine the favorable features of both parent structures, but again synthetic strategies are poorly developed. Here we demonstrate strategies that give straightforward, controlled access to differentially substituted meso-aryl-tetrabenzotriazaporphyrins by reaction between an aryl-aminoisoindolene (A) initiator and a complementary phthalonitrile (B). The choice of precursors and reaction conditions allows selective preparation of 1:3 Ar-ABBB and, uniquely, 2:2 Ar-ABBA functionalized hybrids.

Abstract
A versatile and straightforward protocol is disclosed for controlled synthesis of complex lanthanide-bridged heteroleptic porphyrin-phthalocyanine triple-decker assemblies. Two porphyrins, linked by a flexible spacer chain of intermediate length, sequentially capture lanthanide ions and a phthalocyanine to efficiently form the triple-decker complex. The bridge directs assembly, but also controls the mobility of the central macrocycle and further imparts a fully eclipsed arrangement of all three rings.

Abstract
A unique organic/inorganic nanocomposite of non-aggregated lead sulphide (PbS) quantum dots (QDs) dispersed within a spun film of non-peripherally octakis(hexyl)-substituted metal-free phthalocyanine (C[Formula: see text]H[Formula: see text]Pc) has been prepared at room temperature by a simple and low-cost method. The frequency response of alternating current (AC) conduction in a 130 nm thick C[Formula: see text]H[Formula: see text]Pc /PbS film sandwiched between the indium-tin-oxide (ITO) and aluminum (Al) electrodes is found to obey the universal power-law. The cryogenic study of AC conduction reveals that the correlated barrier hopping (CBH) model closely fits to the experimental data at temperatures below 240 K. The parameters obtained by fitting the CBH model point out that the hopping process cannot take place directly between neighboring PbS QDs but involves the localized states within the matrix.

The conduction mechanism is found to be Ohmic within the bias of [Formula: see text] while the bulk limited Poole–Frenkel mechanism is responsible for the higher bias. The compounds show individual characteristics depending on the central metal ions, substituent chain lengths and their mesophases. Values of 67.55 [Formula: see text]cm[Formula: see text] and 42.31 [Formula: see text]cm[Formula: see text] have been obtained for room temperature in-plane Ohmic conductivity of as-deposited octyl lutetium (C[Formula: see text]LuPc[Formula: see text] and hexyl gadolinium (C[Formula: see text]GdPc[Formula: see text] films, respectively while C[Formula: see text]GdPc[Formula: see text] films exhibit nearly two orders of magnitude smaller conductivity. On annealing at 80[Formula: see text]C, Ohmic conductivities of C[Formula: see text]LuPc[Formula: see text] and C[Formula: see text]GdPc[Formula: see text] are found to have increased but the conductivity of C[Formula: see text]GdPc[Formula: see text] decreased by more than one order of magnitude to 1.5 [Formula: see text]cm[Formula: see text]. For physical interpretation of the charge transport behavior of these three molecules, their UV-vis optical absorption spectra in the solution and in as-deposited and annealed solid phases and atomic force microscopy study have been performed. It is believed that both orientation and positional reorganizations are responsible, depending upon the size of the central ion and side chain length.

Abstract
In this work, the topic of the detrimental contact effects in organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) is revisited. In this case, contact effects are considered as a tool to enhance the characterization procedures of OTFTs, achieving more accurate values for the fundamental parameters of the transistor threshold voltage, carrier mobility and on-off current ratio. The contact region is also seen as a fundamental part of the device which is sensitive to physical, chemical and fabrication variables. A compact model for OTFTs, which includes the effects of the contacts, and a recent proposal of an associated evolutionary parameter extraction procedure are reviewed. Both the model and the procedure are used to assess the effect of the annealing temperature on a nickel-1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25-octakis(hexyl)phthalocyanine (NiPc6)-based OTFT. A review of the importance of phthalocyanines in organic electronics is also provided. The characterization of the contact region in NiPc6 OTFTs complements the results extracted from other physical-chemical techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry or atomic force microscopy, in which the transition from crystal to columnar mesophase imposes a limit for the optimum performance of the annealed OTFTs.

Abstract
The efficient harvesting and transport of visible light by electronic energy transfer (EET) are critical to solar energy conversion in both nature and molecular electronics. In this work, we study EET in a synthetic dyad comprising a visible absorbing subphthalocyanine (SubPc) donor and a Zn tetraphenyl porphyrin (ZnTPP) acceptor. Energy transfer is probed by steady-state spectroscopy, ultrafast transient absorption, and two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy. Steady-state and time-resolved experiments point to only weak electronic coupling between the components of the dimer. The weak coupling supports energy transfer from the SubPc to the zinc porphyrin in 7 ps, which itself subsequently undergoes intersystem crossing to populate the triplet state. The rate of the forward energy transfer is discussed in terms of the structure of the dimer, which is calculated by density functional theory. There is evidence of back energy transfer from the ZnTPP on the hundreds of picoseconds time scale. Sub-picosecond spectral diffusion was also observed and characterized, but it does not influence the picosecond energy transfer.

Abstract
The first syntheses of hybrid structures that lie between subphthalocyanines and subporphyrins are reported. The versatile single-step synthetic method uses a preformed aminoisoindolene to provide the bridging methine unit and its substituent while trialkoxyborates simultaneously act as Lewis acid, template, and provider of the apical substituent. The selection of each component therefore allows for the controlled formation of diverse, differentially functionalized systems. The new hybrids are isolated as robust, pure materials that display intense absorption and emission in the mid-visible region. The new compounds are further characterized in solution and solid state by variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography, respectively.

Abstract
A novel homologous series of four 1,4,8,11,15,18-hexakis(pentyl)-22-methyl-25-hydroxyalkylphthalocyanine derivatives with the hydroxyalkyl chain varying from hydroxynonyl through to hydroxydodecyl has been synthesized to investigate the role of the hydroxyalkyl chain in promoting thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior. Polarizing optical miscoscopy reveals that the compound with the shortest hydroxyalkyl chain (hydroxynonyl) exhibits a mesophase with a texture characteristic of a columnar mesophase, common among liquid crystalline phthalocyanine derivatives. However, as the chain is lengthened along the series, there appears a second type of mesophase that shows a schlieren texture. Such a texture is characteristic of a nematic phase and rare among liquid crystalline phthalocyanine derivatives. A fifth compound, the novel 1,4,8,11,15,18-hexakis(pentyl)-22-methyl-25-dodecylphthalocyanine, exhibits only columnar mesophase behavior suggesting that the hydroxyl group at the end of the longer chains of the former compounds is important in developing the nematic phase.

Abstract
Cyclic voltammetric and Raman and UV-vis spectroscopic measurements were performed on thin films of nonperipherally substituted bis[1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25-octakis(octyl)phthalocyaninato] lutetium(III) (R16LuPc2). Voltammograms exhibit one-electron quasi-reversible redox processes in 1.5 M LiClO4 aqueous solutions. The red-shift of the Q-band of R16LuPc2 in the UV-visible absorption spectra upon oxidation is attributed to the shortening of the inter-ring distance between the two phthalocyanine moieties. This observation is also consistent with the shift in the redox-sensitive vibrational modes in the Raman spectra due to the localization of the positive charge on phthalocyanine moieties. Neutralization of the oxidized R16LuPc2(+) film by dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) using different concentrations varying from 0.05 to 1 mM has been studied by UV-vis absorption and Raman spectroscopies. The reduction processes for a three month old film were found to be slower than those for freshly prepared films and showed a dependence upon NADH concentration. The data provide a basis for application of R16LuPc2 as a sensor for NADH.

Routes to some 3,6-disubstituted phthalonitriles and examples of phthalocyanines derived therefrom: An overview. J PORPHYR PHTHALOCYA 2013. Abstract
The paper reviews a selection of synthetic pathways that provide access to 3,6-disubstituted phthalonitriles, precursors for the synthesis of 1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25-octasubstituted phthalocyanine derivatives. Early routes using Diels–Alder reactions for the synthesis of 3,6-dialkyl, 3,6-dialkoxymethyl, 3,6-dialkenyl and 3,6-diphenylphthalonitriles are appraised. However, the emphasis of the review focuses on the scope and applications of 2,3-dicyanohydroquinone as a starting material for obtaining 3,6-disubstituted phthalonitriles. The earliest example of the use of 2,3-dicyanohydroquinone concerned its O -alkylation to afford 3,6-dialkoxyphthalonitriles. These are immediate precursors to near-infrared absorbing phthalocyanine derivatives. Triflation of 2,3-dicyanohydroquinone extends the scope of the compound for phthalocyanine synthesis; the bis-triflate derivative is susceptible to S N Ar reactions and readily reacts with thiols to provide 3,6-bis(alkylsulfanyl) and 3,6-bis(arylsulfanyl)phthalonitriles. 3,6-Bis(phenylselenyl)phthalonitrile has also been obtained recently from the same precursor. Phthalocyanine derivatives obtained from them typically show a strongly bathochromically shifted Q-band absorption that is particularly sensitive to the central metal ion. The bis-triflate of 2,3-dicyanohydroquinone is also an ideal precursor for participation in cross-coupling reactions. Examples from the University of East Anglia group and elsewhere are presented which show the application of the nickel-catalyzed Negishi coupling reaction using alkylzinc halide derivatives. Yields of 3,6-dialkylphthalonitriles and 3,6-bis(substituted alkyl)phthalonitriles range from ca. 40 to 70%. Direct comparison for one example shows that the yield from the Negishi coupling method is higher than that using the Suzuki coupling protocol. Examples of the preparation of 3,6-diarylphthalonitriles from 2,3-dicyanohydroquinone bis-triflate using the Suzuki coupling reaction are reported with yields of the order of 65–70%. The review also includes a further application of 2,3-dicyanohydroquinone as a precursor to both monobromo and dibromo derivatives of 3,6-dibutoxyphthalonitrile. These compounds provide opportunities for cross-coupling at the brominated sites to provide more complex derivatives with the potential to serve as precursors of highly substituted phthalocyanine derivatives.

Abstract
The preparation of some peripherally substituted (2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24) and non-peripherally substituted (1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25) octaalkyl lead(II) phthalocyanines with different alkyl chain lengths (6, 7, 8 or 9 carbons) is described and a comparison of some of their properties reported. X-ray structure analyses of the isomeric peripheral and non-peripheral octakis(octyl)phthalocyaninato lead(II) compounds reveal a greater degree of distortion of the ligand ring system from planarity in the former derivative. The series of peripherally substituted octaalkyl lead(II) phthalocyanines exhibit columnar liquid crystal behavior whereas the non-peripherally substituted isomers do not. The lability of the lead ion was investigated using 1 H NMR spectrometry under a specific set of conditions (8.8 × 10-4 M solutions of the phthalocyanine in d8-toluene containing d4-acetic acid 2.06 × 10-5 M). All the compounds underwent acid catalyzed demetalation at rates dependent upon the location of the substituents and, more surprisingly, the chain length of the alkyl groups. Under these conditions the lead ion within each of the peripherally substituted octaalkyl lead phthalocyanines was more labile than that in the non-peripherally substituted isomer.

Abstract
Avoided level crossing muon spin resonance (ALC-μSR) spectroscopy was used to study radicals produced by the addition of the light hydrogen isotope muonium (Mu) to the discotic liquid crystal (DLC) 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahexylthiotriphenylene (HHTT). Mu adds to the secondary carbon atoms of HHTT to produce a substituted cyclohexadienyl radical, whose identity was confirmed by comparing the measured hyperfine coupling constants with values obtained from DFT calculations. ALC-μSR spectra were obtained in the isotropic (I), hexagonal columnar (Col(h)), helical (H), and crystalline (Cr) phases. In the I and Col(h) phases the radicals, which are incorporated within the stacks of HHTT molecules as isolated paramagnetic defects, undergo extremely rapid electron spin relaxation, on the order of a hundredfold faster than in the H or Cr phases. The electron spin relaxation rate increases significantly with increasing temperature and appears to be caused by the liquidlike motion within the columns, which modulates the overlap between the π system of the radical and the π systems of the neighboring HHTT molecules, and hence, the hyperfine coupling constants. Rapid electron spin relaxation should occur for any π radical incorporated within the columns of a DLC, which may limit the utility of DLCs for future spin-based technologies.

Abstract
The preparation and characterization of a number of metalated derivatives of 1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25-octahexyl and 1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25-octadecyl tetrabenzotriazaporphyrins (TBTAPs) are reported. The mesophase behavior of the compounds has been characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and by polarized light optical microscopy. Mesophase behavior is compared with data for the corresponding phthalocyanine derivatives reported earlier. The temperature range of the mesophase(s) exhibited by the title compounds is generally broader than those of their phthalocyanine analogs. UV-vis data for examples of the TBTAP compounds as spin-coated films reveal differences in the type of molecular packing in the as-deposited films that is largely dependent upon the length of the alkyl chain substituents. On heating, the films undergo molecular reorganizations at temperatures corresponding to the mesophase transitions of bulk material observed by DSC.

Abstract
Phthalocyanines present a flat, disk-like molecular profile and suitably substituted derivatives show discotic liquid crystalline behavior. Extension of the molecular π-system through benzofusion perturbes the phthalocyanine's basic properties, most notably shifting the absorption to longer wavelength. This paper describes our synthesis of triphenylenophthalocyanines where the benzene rings of phthalocyanines are replaced by triphenylene units. The resulting materials are macrodiscotic in nature. They show red-shifted absorption spectra and columnar mesophase behavior over a wide temperature range.

Abstract
Three non-peripherally substituted tin(IV) macrocylic compounds, octahexylphthalocyaninato dichlorotin(IV) (3a), octahexyltetrabenzo-5,10,15- triazaporphyrinato dichlorotin(IV) (3b) and octadecylphthalocyaninato dichlorotin(IV) (3c) were synthesized and their photophysical and electrochemical behavior studied. Complex 3b, containing a CH group in place of one of the aza nitrogen atoms of the phthalocyanine core, shows a split Q-band due to its lower symmetry. The triplet state quantum yields were found to be lower than would be expected on the basis of the heavy atom effect of tin as the central metal for phthalocyanine derivatives (3a and 3c). In contrast, 3b shows a triplet quantum yield Φ T = 0.78. The triplet state lifetimes were solvent dependent, and were higher in tetrahydrofuran than in toluene. Cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry of the complexes revealed only ring-based redox processes.

Abstract
The article reviews the exploitation of the serendipitous discovery that dihydroxysilicon 1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25-octakis(hexyl)phthalocyanine 1 reacts at one face only to form a μ-oxo linked bond to dichlorosilicon phthalocyanine. Reaction of 1 with dihydroxysilicon octaethylporphyrin led to an unstable μ-oxo linked Pc-O-Pn heteroligand dyad that could not be isolated. However, reaction with dihydroxygermanium octaethylporphyrin gave a stable dyad that showed substantial broad band absorption attributable to exciton effects. A small amount of the μ-oxo linked homo dyad formed by self-condensation of dihydroxygermanium octaethylporphyrin was detected by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry but was not isolated. Reaction of 1 with chloroboron subphthalocyanine afforded the stable Pc-O-SubPc heterodyad as the main product and the SubPc-O-Pc-O-SubPc triad as a minor side product. Both gave absorption spectra that showed the main features of the ligands present, implying limited exciton coupling. A further reaction of 1 with axial-hydroxy, axial-methyl silicon phthalocyanine provided a key Pc-O-Pc′ dyad that proved to be an ideal intermediate for developing a synthetic strategy to access a series of hetero-metalloid/hetero-ligand Pc-O-Pc′-O-Pn triads. X-ray structural data for examples of these arrays are discussed. A feature of the triad compounds is their very broad band absorption spectra that extends from the UV through the visible region to near IR wavelengths.

Abstract
Spin-coated films, approximately 100 nm thick, of a newly synthesized bis[octakis(octyl)phthalocyaninato] lutetium(III) complex on ultrasonically cleaned glass substrates exhibit pronounced chemichromic behaviour with potential application in healthcare. In situ kinetic optical absorption spectroscopic measurements show that the phthalocyanine Q-band is red shifted by 60 nm upon oxidation arising from exposure to bromine vapour. Recovery to the original state is achieved by the treatment of the oxidized films with nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and l-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in an aqueous solution containing 1.5 M lithium perchlorate. The neutralization process is found to be governed by first-order kinetics. The linear increase of the reduction rate with increasing concentration of cofactors provides a basis for calibration of analyte concentrations ranging from 3.5 mM down to 0.03 mM.

Abstract
Solution-processed films of 1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25-octakis(hexyl) copper phthalocyanine (CuPc6) were utilized as an active semiconducting layer in the fabrication of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) in the bottom-gate configurations using chemical vapour deposited silicon dioxide (SiO2) as gate dielectrics. The surface treatment of the gate dielectric with a self-assembled monolayer of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) resulted in values of 4×10-2 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 106 for saturation mobility and on/off current ratio, respectively. This improvement was accompanied by a shift in the threshold voltage from 3 V for untreated devices to -2 V for OTS treated devices. The trap density at the interface between the gate dielectric and semiconductor decreased by about one order of magnitude after the surface treatment. The transistors with the OTS treated gate dielectrics were more stable over a 30-day period in air than untreated ones.
