Abstract
Enantioselective syntheses of nonracemic secondary alcohols have been achieved in an aqueous micellar medium via copper-catalyzed (Cu(OAc)2·H2O/(R)-3,4,5-MeO-MeO-BIPHEP) reduction of aryl/heteroaryl ketones. This methodology serves as a green protocol to access enantio-enriched alcohols under mild conditions (0-22 °C) using a base metal catalyst, together with an inexpensive, innocuous, and convenient stoichiometric hydride source (PMHS). The secondary alcohol products are formed in good to excellent yields with ee values greater than 90%.

Abstract
Dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) is one of the most attractive methods for enantioselective synthesis. In the reported studies, lipase B from Candida antarctica (CALB) immobilized on siliceous mesoporous cellular foams (MCF) functionalized with different hydrophobic groups, and two ruthenium complexes with substituted cyclopentadienyl ligands were investigated as catalysts for the chemoenzymatic DKR of (rac)-1-phenylethanol, using Novozym 435 as a benchmark biocatalyst. Studies on the (rac)-1-phenylethanol transesterification reaction showed that CALB supported on MCFs grafted with methyl groups is a promising biocatalyst and isopropenyl acetate is a preferable acylation agent. Both Ru-complexes activated by K3PO4 or t-BuOK, proved to be effective catalysts of the racemization reaction. The final DKR experiments using all catalysts combinations singled out, gave 96% conversion, and (R)-1-phenylethyl acetate enantiomeric excess of 98% in 8 h using K3PO4 activator.

Abstract
Enzyme stereoselectivity control is still a major challenge. To gain insight into the molecular basis of enzyme stereo-recognition and expand the source of antiPrelog carbonyl reductase toward β-ketoesters, rational enzyme design aiming at stereoselectivity inversion was performed. The designed variant Q139G switched the enzyme stereoselectivity toward β-ketoesters from Prelog to antiPrelog, providing corresponding alcohols in high enantiomeric purity (89.1-99.1 % ee). More importantly, the well-known trade-off between stereoselectivity and activity was not found. Q139G exhibited higher catalytic activity than the wildtype enzyme, the enhancement of the catalytic efficiency (kcat /Km ) varied from 1.1- to 27.1-fold. Interestingly, the mutant Q139G did not lead to reversed stereoselectivity toward aromatic ketones. Analysis of enzyme-substrate complexes showed that the structural flexibility of β-ketoesters and a newly formed cave together facilitated the formation of the antiPrelog-preferred conformation. In contrast, the relatively large and rigid structure of the aromatic ketones prevents them from forming the antiPrelog-preferred conformation.

Abstract
Conjugated ynones are easily accessible feedstock and the existence of an alkyne bond endows ynones with different attractive reactivities, thus making them unique substrates for catalytic asymmetric reactions. Their compatibility under organocatalytic, metal-catalyzed as well as cooperative catalytic conditions has resulted in numerous enantioselective transformations. Importantly, conjugated ynones can act as nucleophiles or electrophiles, and serve as easily accessed synthons for different cyclization pathways. This review summarizes the recent literature examples of the catalytic reactions of conjugated ynones and related compounds such as alkyne conjugated α-ketoesters, and classifies these reaction types alongside mechanistic insights whenever possible. We aim to trigger more intensive research in the future to render the asymmetric transformation of ynones as a common and reliable tool for asymmetric synthesis.

Abstract
Enantiopure secondary alcohols are fundamental high-value synthetic building blocks. One of the most attractive ways to get access to this compound class is the catalytic hydroboration. We describe a new concept for this reaction type that allowed for exceptional catalytic turnover numbers (up to 15 400), which were increased by around 1.5-3 orders of magnitude compared to the most active catalysts previously reported. In our concept an aprotic ammonium halide moiety cooperates with an oxophilic Lewis acid within the same catalyst molecule. Control experiments reveal that both catalytic centers are essential for the observed activity. Kinetic, spectroscopic and computational studies show that the hydride transfer is rate limiting and proceeds via a concerted mechanism, in which hydride at Boron is continuously displaced by iodide, reminiscent to an SN 2 reaction. The catalyst, which is accessible in high yields in few steps, was found to be stable during catalysis, readily recyclable and could be reused 10 times still efficiently working.

Abstract
Reported here is the use of single-layered, chiral porous sheets with induced pore chirality for repeatable asymmetric transformations and self-separation without the need for chiral catalysts or chiral auxiliaries. The asymmetric induction is driven by chiral fixation of absorbed achiral substrates inside the chiral pores for transformation into enantiopure products with enantioselectivities of greater than 99 % ee. When the conversion is completed, the products are spontaneously separated out of the pores, enabling the porous sheets to perform repeated cycles of converting achiral substrates into chiral products for release without compromising pore performance. Confinement of achiral substrates into two-dimensional chiral porous materials provides access to a highly efficient alternative to current asymmetric synthesis methodologies.

Abstract
Asymmetric synthesis has posed a significant challenge to organic chemists for over a century. Several strategies have been developed to synthesize enantiomerically enriched compounds, which are ubiquitous in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries. While many organometallic and organic catalysts have been found to mediate thermal enantioselective reactions, the field of photochemistry lacks similar depth. Recently, chiral 1,3,2-oxazaborolidines have made the transition from Lewis acids that were exclusively applied to thermal reactions to catalysts for enantioselective photochemical reactions. Due to their modular structure, various 1,3,2-oxazaborolidines are readily available and can be easily fitted to a given chemical transformation. Their use holds great promise for future developments in photochemistry. This Account gives an overview of the substrate classes that are known to undergo enantioselective photochemical transformations in the presence of chiral 1,3,2-oxazaborolidines and touches on the catalytic mode of action, on the proposed enantiodifferentiation mechanism, as well as on recent computational studies.Based on the discovery that the presence of Lewis acids enhances the efficiency of coumarin [2 + 2] photocycloadditions, chiral 1,3,2-oxazaborolidines were applied in 2010 for the first time to prepare enantiomerically enriched photoproducts. These Lewis acids were then successfully used in intramolecular [2 + 2] photocycloaddition reactions of 1-alkenoyl-5,6-dihydro-4-pyridones and 3-alkenyloxy-2-cycloalkenones. In the course of this work, it became evident that the chiral 1,3,2-oxazaborolidine must be tailored to the specific reaction; it was shown that both inter- and intramolecular [2 + 2] photocycloadditions of cyclic enones can be conducted enantioselectively, but the aryl rings of the chiral Lewis acids require different substitution patterns. In all [2 + 2] photocycloaddition reactions in which chiral 1,3,2-oxazaborolidines were used as catalysts, the catalyst loading could not be decreased below 50 mol % without sacrificing enantioselectivity due to competitive racemic background reactions. To overcome this constraint, substrates that reacted exclusively when bound to an oxazaborolidine were tested, notably phenanthrene-9-carboxaldehydes and cyclohexa-2,4-dienones. The former substrate class underwent an ortho photocycloaddition, the latter an oxadi-π-methane rearrangement. Several new 1,3,2-oxazaborolidines were designed, and the products were obtained in high enantioselectivity with only 10 mol % of catalyst. Recently, an iridium-based triplet sensitizer was employed to facilitate enantioselective [2 + 2] photocycloadditions of cinnamates with 25 mol % of chiral 1,3,2-oxazaborolidine. In this case, the relatively low catalyst loading was possible because the oxazaborolidine-substrate complex exhibits a lower triplet energy and an improved electronic coupling compared to the uncomplexed substrate, allowing for a selective energy transfer.By synthetic and theoretical studies, it has become evident that chiral 1,3,2-oxazaborolidines are multifaceted catalysts: they change absorption behavior, alter energetic states, and induce chirality. While a diverse set of substrates has been shown to undergo enantioselective photochemical transformations in the presence of chiral 1,3,2-oxazaborolidines either through direct excitation or through triplet sensitization, these catalysts took on different roles for different substrates. Based on the studies presented in this Account, it can be assumed that there are still more photochemical reactions and substrate classes that could profit from chiral 1,3,2-oxazaborolidines.
