Optical Phenomena in Molecule-Based Magnetic Materials

Since the last century, we have witnessed the development of molecular magnetism which deals with magnetic materials based on molecular species, i.e., organic radicals and metal complexes. Among them, the broadest attention was devoted to molecule-based ferro-/ferrimagnets, spin transition materials, including those exploring electron transfer, molecular nanomagnets, such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), molecular qubits, and stimuli-responsive magnetic materials. Their physical properties open the application horizons in sensors, data storage, spintronics, and quantum computation. It was found that various optical phenomena, such as thermochromism, photoswitching of magnetic and optical characteristics, luminescence, nonlinear optical and chiroptical effects, as well as optical responsivity to external stimuli, can be implemented into molecule-based magnetic materials. Moreover, the fruitful interactions of these optical effects with magnetism in molecule-based materials can provide new physical cross-effects and multifunctionality, enriching the applications in optical, electronic, and magnetic devices. This Review aims to show the scope of optical phenomena generated in molecule-based magnetic materials, including the recent advances in such areas as high-temperature photomagnetism, optical thermometry utilizing SMMs, optical addressability of molecular qubits, magneto-chiral dichroism, and opto-magneto-electric multifunctionality. These findings are discussed in the context of the types of optical phenomena accessible for various classes of molecule-based magnetic materials.

Novel stable ytterbium acetylacetonate-quinaldinate complexes as single-molecule magnets and surprisingly efficient luminophores

The first Yb complexes comprising a quinoline-2-carboxylate (quinaldinate, Q-) ligand, namely 1D-polymeric [Yb(acac)2(Q)]n (1, acac- is the acetylacetonate (pentane-2,4-dionate) anion) and mononuclear [Yb(acac)2(Q)(Phen)] (2, Phen is 1,10-phenanthroline), are reported. The bifunctionality of both complexes as field-induced single-molecule magnets (SMMs) and near IR luminophores has been revealed. The SMM properties of 1 and 2 have been discussed in terms of the geometry and composition of the coordination environment. Also, 1 is the first example of 1D-polymeric SMMs with the capped octahedral surrounding of Yb3+. The photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 1 and 2 are 2 and 4%, respectively. The origins of this difference are discussed. Surprisingly, the PLQY value of 2 is high for compounds comprising a lot of C-H vibrational quenchers, being the highest one for reliably characterized Yb β-diketonate complexes, and surpassing those for complexes with a broad range of anionic ligands. In this respect, the role of the Phen ligand is to tune the coordination mode of Q- thereby decreasing the energy of coordinating C-O oscillators rather than to act as a typical antenna ligand. These results can give rise to an alternative route to elaborate efficient Yb-based luminophores via the substitution of the β-diketonate ligands controlled by the introduction of appropriate neutral ligands.

Single molecule magnet features in luminescent lanthanide coordination polymers with heptacoordinate Dy/Yb(III) ions as nodes

Two sets of 1D/2D lanthanide coordination polymers with formulas of Ln(oqa)3·2H2O [Hoqa = 2-(4-oxoquinolin-1(4H)-yl) acetic acid, Ln = Dy (1), Yb (2)] and Ln(oaa)2(HCOO)(H2O) [Hoaa = 2-(9-oxoacridin-10(9H)-yl) acetic acid, Ln = Dy (3), Yb (4)] have been synthesized and their physical properties were investigated. All four complexes are constructed from seven-coordinate lanthanide ions and corresponding organic linkers. The lanthanide ions in 1 and 2 adopt a pentagonal bipyramid coordination geometry, whereas the coordination geometry of lanthanide ions in 3 and 4 can be described as a capped octahedron. Slow magnetic relaxation behaviors were observed in these four products at a zero/non-zero static magnetic field. Complexes 1, 2 and 4 exhibit the characteristic emission of Ln(III) ions, whereas complex 3 shows ligand-based emission. Bright yellow light emission was also observed when a voltage was applied, demonstrating the potential of 1 for application in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Compounds 3 and 4 are the first examples of lanthanide complexes based on Hoaa ligands.

Molecular Magnetic Materials Based on {Co III (Tp*)(CN) 3 } − Cyanidometallate: Combined Magnetic, Structural and 59 Co NMR Study

The cyanidocobaltate of formula fac‐PPh₄[Co^III(^Me2Tp)(CN)₃] ⋅ CH₃CN (1) has been used as a metalloligand to prepare polynuclear magnetic complexes (^Me2Tp=hydrotris(3,5‐dimethylpyrazol‐1‐yl)borate). The association of 1 with in situ prepared [Fe^II(bik)₂(MeCN)₂](OTf)₂ (bik=bis(1‐methylimidazol‐2‐yl)ketone) leads to a molecular square of formula {[Co^III{(^Me2Tp)}(CN)₃]₂[Fe^II(bik)₂]₂}(OTf)₂ ⋅ 4MeCN ⋅ 2H₂O (2), whereas the self‐assembly of 1 with preformed cluster [Co^II₂(OH₂)(piv)₄(Hpiv)₄] in MeCN leads to the two‐dimensional network of formula {[Co^II₂(piv)₃]₂[Co^III(^Me2Tp)(CN)₃]₂ ⋅ 2CH₃CN}_∞ (3). These compounds were structurally characterized via single crystal X‐ray analysis and their spectroscopic (FTIR, UV‐Vis and ⁵⁹Co NMR) properties and magnetic behaviours were also investigated. Bulk magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that 1 is diamagnetic and 3 is paramagnetic throughout the explored temperature range, whereas 2 exhibits sharp spin transition centered at ca. 292 K. Compound 2 also exhibits photomagnetic effects at low temperature, selective light irradiations allowing to promote reversibly and repeatedly low‐spin⇔high‐spin conversion. Besides, the diamagnetic nature of the Co(III) building block allows us studying these compounds by means of ⁵⁹Co NMR spectroscopy. Herein, a ⁵⁹Co chemical shift has been used as a magnetic probe to corroborate experimental magnetic data obtained from bulk magnetic susceptibility measurements. An influence of the magnetic state of the neighbouring atoms is observed on the ⁵⁹Co NMR signals. Moreover, for the very first time, ⁵⁹Co NMR technique has been successfully introduced to investigate molecular materials with distinct magnetic properties.

Near-Infrared Phosphorescent Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskite with High-Contrast Dielectric and Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Switching Functionalities

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites providing integrated functionalities for multimodal switching applications are widely sought-after materials for optoelectronics. Here, we embark on a study of a novel pyrrolidinium-based cyanide perovskite of formula (C4H10N)2KCr(CN)6, which displays thermally driven bimodal switching characteristics associated with an order-disorder phase transition. Dielectric switching combines two features important from an application standpoint: high permittivity contrast (Δε' = 38.5) and very low dielectric losses. Third-order nonlinear optical switching takes advantage of third-harmonic generation (THG) bistability, thus far unprecedented for perovskites and coordination polymers. Structurally, (C4H10N)2KCr(CN)6 stands out as the first example of a three-dimensional stable perovskite among formate-, azide-, and cyanide-based metal-organic frameworks comprising large pyrrolidinium cations. Its stability, reflected also in robust switching characteristics, has been tracked down to the Cr3+ component, the ionic radius of which provides a large enough metal-cyanide cage for the pyrrolidinium cargo. While the presence of polar pyrrolidinium cations leads to excellent switchable dielectric properties, the presence of Cr3+ is also responsible for efficient phosphorescence, which is remarkably shifted to the near-infrared region (770 to 880 nm). The presence of Cr3+ was also found indispensable to the THG switching functionality. It is also found that a closely related cobalt-based analogue doped with Cr3+ ions displays distinct near-infrared phosphorescence as well. Thus, doping with Cr3+ ions is an effective strategy to introduce phosphorescence as an additional functional property into the family of cobalt-cyanide thermally switchable dielectrics.

Tunable magnetic anisotropy in luminescent cyanido-bridged {Dy2Pt3} molecules incorporating heteroligand PtIV linkers

The interest in the generation of photoluminescence in lanthanide(III) single-molecule magnets (SMMs) is driven by valuable magneto-optical correlations as well as perspectives toward magnetic switching of emission and opto-magnetic devices linking SMMs with optical thermometry. In the pursuit of enhanced magnetic anisotropy and optical features, the key role is played by suitable ligands attached to the 4f metal ion. In this context, cyanido complexes of d-block metal ions, serving as expanded metalloligands, are promising. We report two novel discrete coordination systems serving as emissive SMMs, {[Dy^III(H₂O)₃(tmpo)₃]₂[Pt^IVBr₂(CN)₄]₃}·2H₂O (1) and {[Dy^III(H₂O)(tmpo)₄]₂[Pt^IVBr₂(CN)₄]₃}·2CH₃CN (2) (tmpo = trimethylphosphine oxide), obtained by combining Dy^III complexes with uncommon dibromotetracyanidoplatinate(IV) ions, [Pt^IVBr₂(CN)₄]^2-. They are built of analogous Z-shaped cyanido-bridged {Dy₂Pt₃} molecules but differ in the coordination number of Dy^III (C.N. = 8 in 1, C.N. = 7 in 2) and the number of coordinated tmpo ligands (three in 1, four in 2) which is related to the applied solvents. As a result, both compounds reveal Dy^III-centred slow magnetic relaxation but only 1 shows SMM character at zero dc field, while 2 is a field-induced SMM. The relaxation dynamics in both systems is governed by the Raman relaxation mechanism. These effects were analysed using ac magnetic data and the results of the ab initio calculations with the support of magneto-optical correlations based on low-temperature high-resolution emission spectra. Our findings indicate that heteroligand halogeno-cyanido Pt^IV complexes are promising precursors for emissive SMMs with the further potential of sensitivity to external stimuli that may be related to the lability of the axially positioned halogeno ligands.

Assembly of tetra-nuclear YbIII-containing selenotungstate clusters: synthesis, structures, and magnetic properties

Two tetra-nuclear Yb^III-incorporated selenotungstate clusters, Keggin (C₂H₈N)₆Na₁₄[Yb₄Se₆W₄₄O₁₆₀(H₂O)₁₂]·40H₂O (1) and Wells-Dawson (C₂H₈N)₄Na₁₄[Yb₄Se₆W₄₅O₁₅₉(OH)₆(H₂O)₁₁]·38H₂O (2), have been isolated through a pH-controlled assembly, which exhibit the first Yb^III-containing polyoxotungstates with selenium heteroatoms. Their assemblies rely on the structure-directing effects of SeO₃^2- anion templates to give rise to available Se-containing Keggin-/Wells-Dawson-type motifs. Both compounds were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, power X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as well as electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Furthermore, systematic magnetic studies revealed that 1 exhibits field-induced single-molecule magnetic behavior with a pre-exponential factor of τ₀ = 6.60(7) × 10^-8 s and a relaxation energy barrier of ΔE/k_B = 39.44(2) K, while 2 only displays antiferromagnetic interactions between the ytterbium centers.

Heterotrimetallic Ni2Ln2Fe3 chain complexes based on [Fe(1-CH3im)(CN)5]2

Two phenoxo- and cyanido-bridged one-dimensional complexes Ni^II₂Gd^III₂Fe^III₃ (1) and Ni^II₂Dy^III₂Fe^III₃ (2) have been prepared. They are the first pentacyanidoferrite-bridged heterotrimetallic complexes. Magnetic studies reveal that overall ferromagnetic interactions are present in complexes 1 and 2, and complex 2 shows single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour with an energy barrier of 14.8 K.

New Cyanido-Bridged Heterometallic 3d-4f 1D Coordination Polymers: Synthesis, Crystal Structures and Magnetic Properties

Three new 1D cyanido-bridged 3d-4f coordination polymers, {[Gd(L)(H2O)2Fe(CN)6]·H2O}n (1GdFe), {[Dy(L)(H2O)2Fe(CN)6]·3H2O}n (2DyFe), and {[Dy(L)(H2O)2Co(CN)6]·H2O}n (3DyCo), were assembled following the building-block approach (L = pentadentate bis-semicarbazone ligand resulting from the condensation reaction between 2,6-diacetyl-pyridine and semicarbazide). The crystal structures consist of crenel-like LnIII-MIII alternate chains, with the LnIII ions connected by the hexacyanido metalloligands through two cis cyanido groups. The magnetic properties of the three complexes have been investigated. Field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetization was observed for compounds 2DyFe and 3DyCo. Compound 3DyCo is a new example of chain of Single Ion Magnets.

Magnetic anisotropy in YbIII complex candidates for molecular qubits: a theoretical analysis

The magnetic properties of mononuclear YbIII complexes have been explored by using multiconfigurational CASPT2/RASSI calculations. Such complexes, in particular the case of [Yb(trensal)] complex, have been proposed as molecular qubits due to their spin dynamics properties. We have verified the accuracy of the theoretical approach to study such systems by comparing with experimental magnetic data. In order to have a wide overview of the magnetic properties of mononuclear YbIII complexes, we have considered simple charged and neutral models, [Yb(H2O)n]3+ and [Yb(OH)3(H2O)n-3], for many coordination modes. Thus, the results for more than 100 models allow extraction of some conclusions about the best ligand distributions in the coordination sphere to tailor the magnetic properties. Some low coordination, between 3 and 5, complexes that have no experimental magnetic data have been studied computationally to check if they can present high magnetic anisotropy.

Diverse physical functionalities of rare-earth hexacyanidometallate frameworks and their molecular analogues

The combination of rare-earth metal complexes and hexacyanidometallates of transition metals is a fruitful pathway for achieving functional materials exhibiting a wide scope of mechanical, magnetic, optical, and electrochemical properties.

Holmium(iii) molecular nanomagnets for optical thermometry exploring the luminescence re-absorption effect

Coordination complexes of lanthanide(3+) ions can combine Single-Molecule Magnetism (SMM) with thermally modulated luminescence applicable in optical thermometry. We report an innovative approach towards high performance SMM-based optical thermometers which explores tunable anisotropy and the luminescence re-absorption effect of HoIII complexes. Our concept is shown in dinuclear cyanido-bridged molecules, {[HoIII(4-pyridone)4(H2O)2][MIII(CN)6]}·nH2O (M = Co, 1; Rh, 2; Ir, 3) and their magnetically diluted analogues, {[HoIII x YIII 1-x (4-pyridone)4(H2O)2][MIII(CN)6]}·nH2O (M = Co, x = 0.11, 1@Y; Rh, x = 0.12, 2@Y; Ir, x = 0.10, 3@Y). They are built of pentagonal bipyramidal HoIII complexes revealing the zero-dc-field SMM effect. Experimental studies and the ab initio calculations indicate an Orbach magnetic relaxation with energy barriers varying from 89.8 to 86.7 and 78.7 cm-1 K for 1, 2, and 3, respectively. 1-3 also differ in the strength of quantum tunnelling of magnetization which is suppressed by hyperfine interactions, and, further, by the magnetic dilution. The YIII-based dilution governs the optical properties as 1-3 exhibit poor emission due to the dominant re-absorption from HoIII while 1@Y-3@Y show room-temperature blue emission of 4-pyridone. Within ligand emission bands, the sharp re-absorption lines of the HoIII electronic transitions were observed. Their strong thermal variation was used in achieving highly sensitive ratiometric optical thermometers whose good performance ranges, lying between 25 and 205 K, are adjustable by using hexacyanidometallates. This work shows that HoIII complexes are great prerequisites for advanced opto-magnetic systems linking slow magnetic relaxation with unique optical thermometry exploiting a luminescence re-absorption phenomenon.

Wave-Function Symmetry Control of Electron-Transfer Pathways within a Charge-Transfer Chromophore

Despite a diverse manifold of excited states available, it is generally accepted that the photoinduced reactivity of charge-transfer chromophores involves only the lowest-energy excited state. Shining a visible-light laser pulse on an aqueous solution of the chromophore-quencher [Ru(tpy)(bpy)(μNC)Os^III(CN)₅]^- assembly (tpy = 2,2';6,2''-terpyridine and bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine), we prepared a mixture of two charge-transfer excited states with different wave-function symmetry. We were able to follow, in real time, how these states undergo separate electron-transfer reaction pathways. As a consequence, their lifetimes differ in 3 orders of magnitude. Implicit are energy barriers high enough to prevent internal conversion within early excited-state populations, shaping isolated electron-transfer channels in the excited-state potential energy surface. This is relevant not only for supramolecular donor/acceptor chemistry with restricted donor/acceptor relative orientations. These energy barriers provide a means to avoid chemical potential dissipation upon light absorption in any molecular energy conversion scheme, and our observations invite to explore wave-function symmetry-based strategies to engineer these barriers.

Proton Conductive Luminescent Thermometer Based on Near-Infrared Emissive {YbCo2} Molecular Nanomagnets

Lanthanide(III)-based coordination complexes have been explored as a source of bifunctional molecular materials combining Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior with visible-to-near-infrared photoluminescence. In pursuit of more advanced multifunctionality, the next target is to functionalize crystalline solids based on emissive molecular nanomagnets toward high proton conductivity and an efficient luminescent thermometric effect. Here, a unique multifunctional molecule-based material, (H₅O₂)₂(H)[Yb^III(hmpa)₄][Co^III(CN)₆]₂·0.2H₂O (1, hmpa = hexamethylphosphoramide), composed of molecular {YbCo₂}^3- anions noncovalently bonded to acidic H₅O₂⁺ and H⁺ ions, is reported. The resulting Yb^III complexes present a slow magnetic relaxation below 6 K and room temperature NIR 4f-centered photoluminescence sensitized by [Co(CN)₆]^3- ions. The microporous framework, built on these emissive magnetic molecules, exhibits a high proton conductivity of the H-hopping mechanism reaching σ of 1.7 × 10^-4 S·cm^-1 at 97% relative humidity, which classifies 1 as a superionic conductor. Moreover, the emission pattern is strongly temperature-dependent which was utilized in achieving a highly sensitive single-center luminescent thermometer with a relative thermal sensitivity, S_r > 1% K^-1 in the 50-175 K range. This work shows an unprecedented combination of magnetic, optical, and electrical functionalities in a single phase working as a proton conductive NIR-emissive thermometer based on Single-Molecule Magnets.

Europium(III) Photoluminescence Governed by d8-d10 Heterometallophilic Interactions in Trimetallic Cyanido-Bridged Coordination Frameworks

We report an efficient pathway toward sensitization of red room temperature Eu^III emission by the charge-transfer (CT) states related to d⁸-d¹⁰ heterometallophilic interactions achieved by the simultaneous application of tetracyanidometallates of Pt^II/Pd^II and dicyanidometallates of Au^I/Ag^I in the construction of a trimetallic d-d-f assembly. The combination of Eu³⁺, [M^II(CN)₄]^2- (M = Pt, Pd), and [M^I(CN)₂]^- (M = Au, Ag) ions along with 4,4'-bipyridine N,N'-dioxide (4,4'-bpdo) results in four novel isostructural 2D {[Eu^III(4,4'-bpdo)(H₂O)₂][M^II(CN)₄]}·[M^I(CN)₂]·H₂O (M^II/M^I = Pt/Au, 1; Pt/Ag, 2; Pd/Au, 3; Pd/Ag, 4) coordination networks. They are built of hybrid coordination layers, based on cyanido-bridged {Eu^III[M^II(CN)₄]}_n square grids coexisting with metal-organic {Eu^III(4,4'-bpdo)}_n chains, with the further attachment of [M^I(CN)₂]^- ions through metallophilic {M^II-M^I} interactions. This results in dinuclear {M^IIM^I} units generating an orange emissive metal-to-metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MMLCT) state, whose energy is tuned by the applied d⁸-d¹⁰ metal centers. Thanks to these CT states, 1-4 exhibit room temperature red Eu^III photoluminescence enhanced by energy transfer from {M^IIM^I} units, with the additional role of 4,4'-bpdo also transferring the energy to lanthanides. These donor CT states lying in the visible range successfully broaden the available efficient excitation range up to 500 nm. The overall emission quantum yield ranges from 8(1)% for 4 to 15(2)% for 1, with the intermediate values for 2 and 3 relatively high among the reported Eu^III-based compounds with tetracyanido- and dicyanidometallates. We found that the sensitization efficiency is equally high for all compounds because of the similar energies of the CT states, while the main differences are related to the observed emission lifetimes ranging from ca. 80 μs for 4 to 120-130 μs for 2 and 3 to ca. 180 μs for 1. This phenomenon was correlated with the energies of the vibrational states, e.g., cyanide stretching vibrations, responsible for nonradiative deactivation of Eu^III excited states, which are the highest for the Pd/Ag pair of 4 and the lowest for the Pt/Au pair in 1. Thus, the heaviest pair of Pt^II/Au^I cyanide metal complexes is proven to be the best candidate for the sensitization of room temperature Eu^III luminescence.

Understanding the near-infrared fluorescence and field-induced single-molecule-magnetic properties of dinuclear and one-dimensional-chain ytterbium complexes based on 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic acid

Two Yb(iii) complexes with a dinuclear and belt-like one-dimensional chain structure were reported. Their near-infrared luminescence and single-molecule magnetic properties were investigated in detail.

One-dimensional lanthanide coordination polymers supported by pentadentate Schiff-base and diphenyl phosphate ligands: single molecule magnet behavior and photoluminescence

Four one-dimensional lanthanide coordination polymers constructed from Ln₂ dimers showing single molecule magnet behavior and photoluminescence are reported.

Towards comparative investigation of Er- and Yb-based SMMs: the effect of the coordination environment configuration on the magnetic relaxation in the series of heteroleptic thiocyanate complexes

We prepared and studied two similar series of Er and Yb thiocyanates, involving [Ln(H₂O)₅(NCS)₃]·H₂O (1Er, 1Yb) as well as the molecular and ionic complexes with 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and 1,10-phenantroline (phen), [Ln(H₂O)(bpy)₂(NCS)₃]·0.5(bpy)·H₂O (2Er, 2Yb), [Ln(H₂O)(phen)₂(NCS)₃]·phen·0.5H₂O (3Er, 3Yb), [Hbpy][Ln(bpy)₂(NCS)₄]·H₂O (4Er, 4Yb) and [Hphen][Ln(phen)₂(NCS)₄] (5Er, 5Yb). All the complexes were found to exhibit the properties of field-induced single-molecule magnets. For 1Yb, the effective value of the energy barrier for magnetization reversal, Δ_eff/k_B, equals to 50 K, which is among the highest ones currently known for molecular SMMs based on Yb³⁺. The obtained data are discussed involving essential structural features of the complexes, namely the configuration of the Ln environment, i.e. its composition and geometry as well as mutual distribution of different donating centers. To the best of our knowledge, this work also involves experimental investigation of the largest and thus sufficiently representative series of similar mononuclear SMMs based on Er and Yb within one study.

Photoluminescent Lanthanide(III) Single-Molecule Magnets in Three-Dimensional Polycyanidocuprate(I)-Based Frameworks

Three-dimensional bimetallic cyanido-bridged frameworks, [Ln^III (2,2'-bipyridine N,N'-dioxide)₂ (H₂ O)][Cu^I ₂ (CN)₅ ]⋅5 H₂ O (Ln=Dy, 1; Yb, 2), are reported. They exhibit the effect of slow relaxation of magnetization, leading to a magnetic hysteresis loop, and sensitized visible-to-near-infrared photoluminescence. Both physical properties are related to the eight-coordinated lanthanide(III) complexes embedded in the unprecedented coordination skeleton composed of symmetry-breaking polycyanidocuprate linkers. The three-dimensional d-f cyanido-bridged network was shown to serve as an efficient coordination scaffold to achieve emissive lanthanide single-molecule magnets.

Ln-Pt electron polarization effects on the magnetic relaxation of heterometallic Ho- and Er-Pt complexes

Heterometallic Ln-Pt complexes, with the formula [Ln₂Pt₃(H₂O)₂(SAc)₁₂] (Ln = Ho(1), Er(2); SAc = thioacetate), were synthesized. From natural bond orbital (NBO) and local orbital locator (LOL) analyses and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements, it was clear that the Ln-Pt interactions or electron polarization occurred. Butterfly-type hysteresis was observed for both 1 and 2. 1 and 2 underwent field-induced slow magnetic relaxation up to 4 K. These magnetic properties were induced by Ln-Pt electron polarization.

Neodymium β-diketonate showing slow magnetic relaxation and acting as a ratiometric thermometer based on near-infrared emission

Self-assembly of β-diketonate (Htta = thenoyl(trifluoro)acetone) and 4,4′-azopyridine (Azo-py) with neodymium(iii) ions in the presence of methanol resulted in the formation of mononuclear complex [Nd^III(TTA)₃(MeOH)₂]·0.5Azo-py (A) in which two asymmetric units are linked by Azo-py through hydrogen bonding via methanol. A reveals near-infrared emission (NIR) centred at about 895 and 1056 nm, in the 10–370 K temperature range, originating from the two emissive transitions on Nd(iii) from ⁴F_3/2 to ⁴I_9/2 and ⁴I_11/2 levels, respectively. Furthermore, the NIR luminescence intensity of A at room temperature augments two times upon thermal elimination of one coordinated methanol molecule. The thermally activated A exhibits single centre ratiometric thermometer behaviour in a wide temperature range from 10 to 300 K. Moreover, fluorescence properties of A were compared to another mononuclear complex [Nd^III(TTA)₃(4-OHpy)(H₂O)] (B). Assembly A also exhibits field-induced slow magnetic relaxation properties with an energy barrier of ΔE/k_B = 19.7(7) K and an attempt time of relaxation, τ₀ = 3.7(8) × 10⁻⁷ s for fresh sample A, and ΔE/k_B = 27.3 K and τ₀ = 8.5(0) × 10⁻⁸ for assembly A after thermal treatment at 370 K.

In this work, we investigated thermally-induced Nd-based one centred ratiometric thermometer which also exhibit single molecule magnetic properties.

Wide-Range UV-to-Visible Excitation of Near-Infrared Emission and Slow Magnetic Relaxation in LnIII(4,4'-Azopyridine-1,1'-dioxide)[CoIII(CN)6]3- Layered Frameworks

Trivalent lanthanide ions combined with two molecular linkers, organic 4,4'-azopyridine-1,1'-dioxide (apdo), and inorganic hexacyanidocobaltate(III), gave a series of magnetoluminescent coordination polymers, [{Ln^III(apdo)(H₂O)₄}{Co^III(CN)₆}]·2H₂O (Ln = Nd, 1; Tb, 2; Dy, 3; Er, 4; Tm, 5; Yb, 6). They are hybrid organic-inorganic layered frameworks composed of cyanido-bridged {Ln₂(μ-NC)₄Co₂} squares linked by Ln-apdo-Ln bridges into a coordination network of a mixed 4- and 8-metal ring topology. Lanthanide(III) complexes, [Ln^III(μ-apdo)₂(H₂O)₄(μ-NC)₂]⁺, of a distorted dodecahedral geometry are isolated by diamagnetic [Co^III(CN)₆]^3- and apdo linkers. As a result, 1-6 reveal field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization, with typical temperature-dependent relaxation of a single-ion origin for Nd^III-containing 1, Dy^III-containing 3, and Yb^III-containing 6. The related alternate-current magnetic data were precisely analyzed, indicating the multiple magnetic relaxation pathways, including a direct process, strong quantum tunneling of magnetization, non-negligible Raman processes, and crucial two-phonon Orbach thermal relaxation. The thermal energy barriers of the Orbach process, Δ E/ k_B, are 15.1(9) K with τ₀ = 9.8(9) × 10^-6 s at H_dc = 4500 Oe, 16.1(8) K with τ₀ = 9.0(9) × 10^-5 s at H_dc = 1500 Oe, and 17.3(6) K with τ₀ = 3.2(7) × 10^-6 s at H_dc = 700 Oe, for 1, 3, and 6, respectively, proving the single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior. Because of the presence of [Co(CN)₆]^3-, 1-6 show strong UV absorption, while the chromophoric apdo leads to the strong absorption in the visible range. As a result, the visible 4f/3d metal-centered emission is quenched, but the near-infrared luminescence from Nd^III and Yb^III is observed in 1 and 6, respectively. It is realized by Co-to-Ln metal-to-metal, and apdo-to-Ln ligand-to-metal energy transfers; thus, broad UV-to-visible excitation can be explored. Compounds 1-6 form a novel family of functional bimetallic assemblies, incorporating NIR-emissive SMMs as presented for NdCo (1) and YbCo (6) derivatives.

Lanthanide Photoluminescence in Heterometallic Polycyanidometallate-Based Coordination Networks

Solid-state functional luminescent materials arouse an enormous scientific interest due to their diverse applications in lighting, display devices, photonics, optical communication, low energy scintillation, optical storage, light conversion, or photovoltaics. Among all types of solid luminophors, the emissive coordination polymers, especially those based on luminescent trivalent lanthanide ions, exhibit a particularly large scope of light-emitting functionalities, fruitfully investigated in the aspects of chemical sensing, display devices, and bioimaging. Here, we present the complete overview of one of the promising families of photoluminescent coordination compounds, that are heterometallic d–f cyanido-bridged networks composed of lanthanide(3+) ions connected through cyanide bridges with polycyanidometallates of d-block metal ions. We are showing that the combination of cationic lanthanide complexes of selected inorganic and organic ligands with anionic homoligand [M(CN)_x]ⁿ⁻ (x = 2, 4, 6 and 8) or heteroligand [M(L)(CN)₄]²⁻ (L = bidentate organic ligand, M = transition metal ions) anions is the efficient route towards the emissive coordination networks revealing important optical properties, including 4f-metal-centred visible and near-infrared emission sensitized through metal-to-metal and/or ligand-to-metal energy transfer processes, and multi-coloured photoluminescence switchable by external stimuli such as excitation wavelength, temperature, or pressure.
