Mesoporous graphitic carbon electrodes derived from boat-fruited shells of Sterculia Foetida for symmetric supercapacitors for energy storage applications

In recent years, intensive research efforts have focused on translating biomass waste into value-added carbon materials broadcasted for their significant role in energy and environmental applications. For the first time, high-performance carbonaceous materials for energy storage applications were developed from the multi-void structure of the boat-fruited shells of Sterculia Foetida (SF). In that view, synthesized mesoporous graphitic activated carbon (g-AC) via the combination of carbonization at various elevating temperatures of 700, 800, and 900 °C, respectively, and alkali activation by KOH, with a high specific surface area of 1040.5 m2 g-1 and a mesopore volume of 0.295 cm3 g-1. In a three-electrode configuration, the improved electrode (SF-K900) exhibited excellent electrochemical behavior, which was observed in an aqueous electrolyte (1 M H2SO4) with a high specific capacitance of 308.6 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g, owing to the interconnected mesopore structures and high surface area of SF-K900. The symmetric supercapacitor (SSC) delivered the specific capacitance of 138 F/g at 1 A/g with a high energy density (ED) of 13.4 Wh/kg at the power density (PD) of 24.12 kW/kg with remarkable cycle stability and supercapacitive retention of 93% over 5000 cycles. Based on the findings, it is possible to develop low-cost active electrode materials for high-rate performance SSC using mesoporous g-AC derived from SF boat-fruited shells.

Nitrogen Adsorption and Characteristics of Iron, Cobalt, and Nickel Oxides Impregnated on SBA-15 Mesoporous Silica

Hexagonal SBA-15 mesoporous material was used as a catalytic template for impregnation, with the transition metals Fe, Co, and Ni as catalysts for chemical transformation. Nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were conducted to better understand the physicochemical properties of the metal oxide-impregnated SBA-15. The specific surface area of the original SBA-15 was approximately 680 m²/g, and the abundances of the catalysts impregnated ranged from 2 to 8%, corresponding to specific surface areas of 560-470 m²/g for Fe-SBA-15, 440-340 m²/g for Ni-SBA-15, and 410-340 m²/g for Co-SBA-15. The increase in impregnated metal loadings filled the pores and collapsed the silica walls during the metal oxides impregnation on SBA-15 and calcination procedures, resulting in a decrease in the specific surface area and pore volume of the templates. The results showed that the order of nitrogen adsorbed was SBA-15 > Fe-SBA-15 > Ni-SBA-15 > Co-SBA-15 when the metal loading was 5%. In addition, the metal oxides on SBA-15 increased the wall thickness compared with raw SBA-15. Based on the XRD spectrum analysis, Fe₂O₃, Co₃O₄, and NiO were the stable crystals on the Fe-SBA-15, Co-SBA-15, and Ni-SBA-15, respectively. The sequence of the average grain size of metal oxides on SBA-15 was Co-SBA-15 > Fe-SBA-15 > Ni-SBA-15, according to XRD spectra and Scherrer's equation. Isopropanol could be decomposed by metal oxide-impregnated SBA-15 to form carbon filament materials. Therefore, these materials have the potential to be employed for pollutant removal, catalytic reactions for organic solvent and bio-oil/biomass reforming, and recycling waste into high-value materials.

Functionalized and tip-open carbon nanotubes for high-performance symmetric supercapacitors

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been widely studied for use in supercapacitor electrodes because of their excellent conductivity, high aspect ratio, excellent mechanical properties, chemical stability, and large specific surface area. However, the electrochemical performance of CNTs is usually limited by their closed tips and fewer active sites. Therefore, a facile and efficient chemical-acid-etching method was employed to open the tips of CNTs and introduce functional groups. Different types of ions (Li⁺, Na⁺, and Mg²⁺) in aqueous electrolytes were investigated using the functionalized and tip-open CNTs (FTO-CNTs), and the Li⁺-based electrolyte has the best electrochemical performance. The areal capacitance when using FTO-CNTs as positive and negative electrodes could reach 542 mF cm^-2 and 410 mF cm^-2, respectively, at a scan rate of 10 mV s^-1, and the positive electrode reached the highest areal capacitance of 903 mF cm^-2 at a current density of 1 mA cm^-2. The symmetric supercapacitor-based FTO-CNTs electrode delivered a superior areal energy density of 39 μW h cm^-2 and an areal power density of 10.2 mW cm^-2, with remarkable cycling stability.

Copper nanoparticles anchored onto boron-doped graphene nanosheets for use as a high performance asymmetric solid-state supercapacitor

There is a high demand for high energy and power density in the field of energy storage devices. To rectify these limitations, a novel asymmetric solid-state supercapacitor (ASSC) was designed and fabricated using a copper anchored boron doped graphene nanosheet (CuBG) as a negative electrode and reduced graphene nanoplatelets as a positive electrode with H2SO4/PVA as the quasi-solid electrolyte. The CuBG was prepared using a two step hydrothermal process followed by pyrolysis at different temperatures using chemical vapour deposition (CVD), using copper sulphate (CuSO4) and boron-trioxide (B2O3) as precursors, for doping in graphene oxide. Owing to the remarkable structure and morphology of Cu nanoparticles on nanosheets of boron intercalated with graphene oxide, the nanosheets exhibit a high specific capacitance of 483 Fg-1 at 1 Ag-1 with a capacitance retention of 96% after 5000 cycles, respectively, in a two-electrode system. In addition, the designed and fabricated solid state ASSC device of rGO//CuBG exhibited a high energy and power density of 132.5 W h kg-1 and 1000 W kg-1, respectively, in a wide potential window of 2.0 V, with an excellent stability, retaining 91% of its initial specific capacitance after 5000 cycles. The electrochemical capacitance of CuBG was also evaluated in a three and two electrode system using a KOH and KOH/PVA solid electrolyte respectively. A specific capacitance of 87.5 Fg-1 was achieved at 1 Ag-1 using the fabricated asymmetric device with a 31.1 W h kg-1 energy density at a corresponding power density of 800 W kg-1 and an 85% capacitance was retained after 5000 cycles. The kinetics of the interfacial charge transport phenomena were analysed using a Nyquist plot of the electrochemical impedance analysis.
