A novel coumarin derivative-grafted dialdehyde cellulose-based fluorescent sensor for selective and sensitive detection of Fe3

A new fluorescent probe DAC-NCH with specific response to Fe³⁺ was synthesized via condensation reaction between dialdehyde cellulose and coumarin derivative. This probe exhibited a significant "turn-off" fluorescence response to Fe³⁺, accompanied by the fluorescence color change from bright pink to colorless. DAC-NCH was highly selective for Fe³⁺ and could achieve detection within a short time (<3 min). The detection limit of DAC-NCH for Fe³⁺ was determined to be as low as 91.7 nM. The complexation mechanism of DAC-NCH with Fe³⁺ was confirmed by Job's plot, FTIR analysis, ¹H NMR titration, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In addition, DAC-NCH could be used for the determination of Fe³⁺ in actual water samples, and DAC-NCH-embedded fluorescent membrane was able to serve as a reliable platform for the detection of Fe³⁺.

Introducing anthracene and amino groups into Ln-OFs for the photoreduction of Cr(vi) without additional photosensitizers or cocatalysts

The stable LCUH-100 was designed and synthesized, by incorporating chromophores into lanthanide MOFs, as a high-efficiency photocatalyst, which can rapidly and efficiently reduce Cr(vi) under visible-light irradiation and has good cycle stability.

Chain length effect of spiro-ring N-alkylation on photophysical signalling parameters in Fe(III) selective rhodamine probes

Manifestation of photophysical signalling parameters in rhodamine derivatives exhibiting complexation induced spiro-ring opening is crucial for the realization of selective metal ion detection at trace levels. Substitution of various functional groups, such as alkylation to the core architecture, modulates the physico-chemical properties of such molecular probes. Despite a few studies, relationships between the extent of photophysical signal modulations and the chain lengths of n-alkyl substituents are still elusive. In this investigation, a few molecular probes based on the rhodamine B (1-5) and rhodamine 6G (6-10) platform were synthesized by their derivatization with n-alkyl substituents of varying chain lengths at the amino-donor of their spiro-ring end, which exhibited Fe(III)-selective absorption and fluorescence 'off-on' signal transduction along with colorization of solution. The Fe(III)-selectivity in these probes remained the same despite their structural distinctions through varied n-alkyl chain lengths of the substituents; however, the quantifiable signalling parameters such as spectroscopic enhancement factors, sensitivity, the kinetics of spiro-ring opening and effectiveness of probe-Fe(III) interactions were analyzed. These parameters were also correlated in terms of the influence of different chain lengths of n-alkyl substituents that efficiently contributed to their inter-componential interactive stereo-electronic environment.

Novel rhodamine probe for colorimetric and fluorescent detection of Fe3+ ions in aqueous media with cellular imaging

A novel rhodamine-pyridine conjugated spectroscopic probe RhP was synthesized and its X-ray single crystalline properties were revealed with tabulation. The RhP displayed a distinct pale-pink colorimetric and "turn-on" fluorescent response to Fe³⁺ in aqueous media [H₂O:DMSO (95:5, v/v)] than that of other interfering ions. During the Fe³⁺ recognition, the absorption (UV-Vis) and photoluminescence (PL) spectral studies revealed new peaks at 561 and 592 nm, respectively. The 1:1 stoichiometry and binding sites were verified by Job's plot, ESI-mass, and ¹H NMR titrations. Subsequently, LOD and binding constant for RhP + Fe³⁺ complex were estimated as 102.3 nM and 6.265 × 10⁴ M^-1 from linear fitting and Benesi-Hildebrand plots, correspondingly. Sensor reversibility of RhP + Fe³⁺ by EDTA was demonstrated by UV/PL and TRPL investigations. Moreover, the photoinduced energy transfer mechanism and band gap changes were established from the DFT interrogations. Lastly, cellular imaging studies were carried out to authenticate the real applicability of RhP in Fe³⁺ detection.

Effect of n-alkyl substitution on Cu(ii)-selective chemosensing of rhodamine B derivatives

Rhodamine B hydrazide-based molecular probes (1-10) were synthesized by derivatization with n-alkyl chains of different lengths at the hydrazide amino end. These probes exhibited selective absorption (A∼557) and fluorescence (I∼580) 'off-on' signal transduction along with a colourless → magenta colour transition in the presence of Cu(ii) ions among all the competitive metal ions investigated. The effective coordination of these probes to Cu(ii) ions under the investigated environment forming [Cu·L]2+ (L = 1-5) and [Cu·L2]2+ (L = 6-10) complexes led to their spiro-ring opening, which in turn was expressed through signatory spectral peaks of ring-opened rhodamine. All these probes exhibited Cu(ii) selectivity in signalling despite structural modifications to the core receptor unit through variation of the nature of the alkyl substituents. However, the sensitivity of the signalling and kinetics of the spiro-ring opening varied and could be correlated with the number of carbon atoms present in the n-alkyl substituents. Structural elucidation with X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoemission spectroscopic analyses provided further insight into the structure-function correlation in their Cu(ii) complexes. These probes with Cu(ii) coordination showed selectivity in signalling, high complexation affinity (log Ka = 4.8-8.8), high sensitivity (LOD = 4.1-80 nM), fast response time (rate = 0.0017-0.0159 s-1) and reversibility with counter anions, which ascertained their potential utility as chemosensors for Cu(ii) ion detection.

A turn-on Schiff base fluorescent probe for the exogenous and endogenous Fe3+ ion sensing and bioimaging of living cells

A Schiff base fluorescent probe, namely naphthalic anhydride – (2-pyridine) hydrazone (NAH), has been synthesized and developed for the highly selective and sensitive monitoring of Fe³⁺ ions in an aqueous solution and living cells.

A Highly Selective "Turn-on" Fluorescent Probe for Detection of Fe3+ in Cells

A new "turn-on" fluorescent probe Py based on rhodamine and piperonaldehyde was designed and synthesized for detecting Fe³⁺ in cells. The free probe Py was non-fluorescent. While only upon addition of Fe³⁺, the significant increase of the fluorescence and color were observed which could be visible directly by "naked-eye". The probe Py shows high selectivity and sensitivity for Fe³⁺ over other common metal ions in EtOH-H₂O (3/2, v/v) mixed solution. The association constant and the detection limit were calculated to be 4.81 × 10⁴ M^-1 and 1.18 × 10^-8 mol/L respectively. The introduction of piperonaldehyde unit could increase probe rigidity which could enhance its optical properties. Meanwhile, the binding mode between Py and Fe³⁺ was found to be a 1:1 complex formation. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed which would further confirm the recognition mechanism between probe Py and Fe³⁺. In addition, the probe has been proved to be reversible for detecting Fe³⁺. Moreover, the probe Py was used to detect Fe³⁺ in cells successfully.
