Recent advances in electrochemical C—H phosphorylation

The activation of C–H bond, and its direct one-step functionalization, is one of the key synthetic methodologies that provides direct access to a variety of practically significant compounds. Particular attention is focused on modifications obtained at the final stages of the synthesis of complicated molecules, which requires high tolerance to the presence of existing functional groups. Phosphorus is an indispensable element of life, and phosphorus chemistry is now experiencing a renaissance due to new emerging applications in medicinal chemistry, materials chemistry (polymers, flame retardants, organic electronics, and photonics), agricultural chemistry (herbicides, insecticides), catalysis (ligands) and other important areas of science and technology. In this regard, the search for new, more selective, low-waste synthetic routes become relevant. In this context, electrosynthesis has proven to be an eco-efficient and convenient approach in many respects, where the reagents are replaced by electrodes, where the reactants are replaced by electrodes, and the applied potential the applied potential determines their “oxidizing or reducing ability”. An electrochemical approach to such processes is being developed rapidly and demonstrates some advantages over traditional classical methods of C-H phosphorylation. The main reasons for success are the exclusion of excess reagents from the reaction system: such as oxidants, reducing agents, and sometimes metal and/or other improvers, which challenge isolation, increase the wastes and reduce the yield due to frequent incompatibility with these functional groups. Ideal conditions include electron as a reactant (regulated by applied potential) and the by-products as hydrogen or hydrocarbon. The review summarizes and analyzes the achievements of electrochemical methods for the preparation of various phosphorus derivatives with carbon-phosphorus bonds, and collects data on the redox properties of the most commonly used phosphorus precursors. Electrochemically induced reactions both with and without catalyst metals, where competitive oxidation of precursors leads to either the activation of C-H bond or to the generation of phosphorus-centered radicals (radical cations) or metal high oxidation states will be examined. The review focuses on publications from the past 5 years.

Electrochemically driven regioselective C-H phosphorylation of group 8 metallocenes

Metallocenes are privileged backbones for synthesis and catalysis. However, the direct dehydrogenative C−H functionalization of unsymmetric metallocenes suffers from reactivity and selectivity issues. Herein, we report an electrochemically driven regioselective C−H phosphorylation of group 8 metallocenes. Mechanistic investigations indicate this dehydrogenative cross coupling occurs through an electrophilic radical substitution of the metallocene with a phosphoryl radical, facilitated by the metallocene itself. This work not only offers an efficient and divergent synthesis of phosphorylated metallocenes, but also provides a guide to interpret the reactivity and regioselectivity for the C−H functionalization of unsymmetric metallocenes.

Metallocene-based phosphines are compounds with potential use in catalysis. Here, the authors report the electrochemical regioselective functionalization of group 8 metallocenes with phosphine oxides; over 60 examples of phosphorylated (benzo)ferrocenes and ruthenocenes can be accessed via this method without the need for a preinstalled directing group.

Visible-light-mediated tandem phosphorylation/cyclization for the synthesis of phosphorylated oxindoles

The visible-light-mediated tandem phosphorylation/cyclization of N-arylacrylamides with H-phosphine oxides has been developed for the synthesis of phosphorylated oxindoles. This efficient and facile process was useful for the construction of a C-P bond and triggered the formation of a C-C bond with good compatibility with functional groups undermild reaction conditions.

A Water-Soluble Sodium Pectate Complex with Copper as an Electrochemical Catalyst for Carbon Dioxide Reduction

A selective noble-metal-free molecular catalyst has emerged as a fruitful approach in the quest for designing efficient and stable catalytic materials for CO2 reduction. In this work, we report that a sodium pectate complex of copper (PG-NaCu) proved to be highly active in the electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to CH4 in water. Stability and selectivity of conversion of CO2 to CH4 as a product at a glassy carbon electrode were discovered. The copper complex PG-NaCu was synthesized and characterized by physicochemical methods. The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) proceeds at -1.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl at ~10 mA/cm2 current densities in the presence of the catalyst. The current density decreases by less than 20% within 12 h of electrolysis (the main decrease occurs in the first 3 h of electrolysis in the presence of CO2). This copper pectate complex (PG-NaCu) combines the advantages of heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts, the stability of heterogeneous solid materials and the performance (high activity and selectivity) of molecular catalysts.

Silver(I) Promoted the C4-H Bond Phosphonation of 1-Naphthylamine Derivatives with H-Phosphonates

A simple and efficient protocol for silver-promoted direct C-H phosphonation of 1-naphthylamine derivatives with H-phosphonates was described. This reaction proceeded smoothly for 1-naphthylamine derivatives at the C4 site, providing a facile and efficient route to 4-phosphonated 1-naphthylamine derivatives. This phosphonation could tolerate a diverse type of functional groups at the pyridinyl and naphthyl moieties. Further functionalization of the phosphonated product was also explored at the C2 and C8 sites, such as fluoridation, methylation, methoxylation, and amination. In addition, DFT studies of the reaction intermediate showed that the most electrophilic reactive site is at the C4 site in the naphthyl ring.

2,3-Diarylbenzo[b]arsole: Structural Modification and Polymerization for Tuning of Photophysical Properties

2,3-Diarylbenzo[b]arsoles were synthesized from zirconacycles and diiodophenylarsine. The structural modification to the luminophore was attained through diarylacetylene precursors, Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, and oxidation of the arsenic atom. The emission properties were controlled according to these modifications. The 2,3-diarylbenzo[b]arsoles showed aggregation-induced emission enhancement; the stronger emission was observed in the solid states than in solutions. In addition, Suzuki-Miyaura polycondensation and olefin metathesis polymerization produced main- and side-chain polymers, respectively. The resultant polymers showed different emission behaviors such as aggregation caused quenching and aggregation induced emission enhancement.

Alkynoates as Versatile and Powerful Chemical Tools for the Rapid Assembly of Diverse Heterocycles under Transition-Metal Catalysis: Recent Developments and Challenges

Heterocycles, heteroaromatics and spirocyclic entities are ubiquitous components of a wide plethora of synthetic drugs, biologically active natural products, marketed pharmaceuticals and agrochemical targets. Recognizing their high proportion in drugs and rich pharmacological potential, these invaluable structural motifs have garnered significant interest, thus enabling the development of efficient catalytic methodologies providing access to architecturally complex and diverse molecules with high atom-economy and low cost. These chemical processes not only allow the formation of diverse heterocycles but also utilize a range of flexible and easily accessible building units in a single operation to discover diversity-oriented synthetic approaches. Alkynoates are significantly important, diverse and powerful building blocks in organic chemistry due to their unique and inherent properties such as the electronic bias on carbon-carbon triple bonds posed by electron-withdrawing groups or the metallic coordination site provided by carbonyl groups. The present review highlights the comprehensive picture of the utility of alkynoates (2007-2019) for the synthesis of various heterocycles (> 50 types) using transition-metal catalysts (Ru, Rh, Pd, Ir, Ag, Au, Pt, Cu, Mn, Fe) in various forms. The valuable function of versatile alkynoates (bearing multifunctional groups) as simple and useful starting materials is explored, thus cyclizing with an array of coupling partners to deliver a broad range of oxygen-, nitrogen-, sulfur-containing heterocycles alongside fused-, and spiro-heterocyclic compounds. In addition, these examples will also focus the scope and reaction limitations, as well as mechanistic investigations into the synthesis of these heterocycles. The biological significance will also be discussed, citing relevant examples of drug molecules highlighting each class of heterocycles. This review summarizes the recent developments in the synthetic methods for the synthesis of various heterocycles using alkynoates as readily available starting materials under transition-metal catalysis.

2-Arylbenzo[b]arsoles: an experimental and computational study on the relationship between structural and photophysical properties

Benzo[b]arsole derivatives, being arsenic analogues of indole, were synthesized by utilizing a safely prepared arsenic precursor. The structural and photophysical properties of the obtained 2-arylbenzo[b]arsoles were experimentally and computationally studied in comparison with those of 1,2,5-triarylarsoles and 9-phenylarsafluorene. It was found that the emission color and/or quantum yield were significantly affected by substituents on the luminescent center and metal-coordination to the arsenic atom. This is the first study on the structure-property relationship of benzo[b]arsole derivatives.

Evaluation of Transition Metal Catalysts in Electrochemically Induced Aromatic Phosphonation

Voltammetry provides important information on the redox properties of catalysts (transition metal complexes of Ni, Co, Mn, etc.) and their activity in electrocatalytic reactions of aromatic C–H phosphonation in the presence of a phosphorus precursor, for example, dialkyl-H-phosphonate. Based on catalytic current growth of oxidation or reduction of the metal catalysts (Co^II, Mn^II, Ni^II, Mn^II/Ni^II, Mn^II/Co^II, and Co^II/Ni^II), quantitative characteristics of the regeneration of catalysts were determined, for example, for Mn^II, Ni^II and Mn^II/Ni^II, Co^II/Ni^II pairs. Calculations confirmed the previously made synthetic observations on the synergistic effect of certain metal ions in binary catalytic systems (Mn^IIbpy/Ni^IIbpy and Ni^IIbpy/Co^IIbpy); for mixtures, the observed rate constants, or TOF, were 690 s⁻¹ and 721 s⁻¹, respectively, and product yields were higher for monometallic catalytic systems (up to 71% for bimetallic catalytic systems and ~30% for monometallic catalytic systems). In some cases, the appearance of pre-waves after adding H-phosphonates confirmed the preceding chemical reaction. It also confirmed the formation of metal phosphonates in the time scale of voltammetry, oxidizing or reducing at lower potentials than the original (RO)₂P(O)H and metal complex, which could be used for fast diagnostics of metal ion and dialkyl-H-phosphonate interactions. Electrochemical transfer of an electron to (from) metal phosphonate generates a phosphonyl radical, which can then react with different arenes to give the products of aromatic C–H phosphonation.

Regioselective radical arylation: silver-mediated synthesis of 3-phosphorylated coumarins, quinolin-2(1H)-one and benzophosphole oxides

A silver-mediated domino radical addition/cyclization reaction of diaryl- or dialkyl-phosphine oxides with propynoic acid derivatives delivering 3-phosphorylated coumarins, quinolin-2(1H)-one and benzophosphole oxides is presented.

Electrochemically induced oxidative S–O coupling: synthesis of sulfonates from sulfonyl hydrazides and N-hydroxyimides or N-hydroxybenzotriazoles

A variety of sulfonates were synthesized from sulfonyl hydrazides and N-hydroxy compounds via electrochemically induced oxidative S–O bond formation.

Opportunities and challenges for combining electro- and organometallic catalysis in C(sp2)-H phosphonation

The chemistry of organoelemental compounds including carbon-phosphorus derivatives is now one of the most rapidly developing fields of research, regarding both fundamental science and solution of applied problems. Extensive opportunities for the synthesis of organophosphorus compounds are opened up by the use of unconventional methods, first of all, electrochemical ones, which combine the benefits of usual homogeneous chemistry in solution and electrochemistry, where reactants are generated at the electrodes directly in the reaction system. The interest in the organic electrosynthesis is caused by several factors, including mild conditions (room temperature, atmospheric pressure), the possibility of conducting reactions in a closed system with a low concentration of the catalyst, which is readily regenerated. This mini-review generalizes the achievements in the field of development of new electrochemical, efficient and atom-economical, catalytic methods for the formation of aromatic carbon – phosphorus bonds and some historical background of these approaches.

Silica-supported silver nanoparticles as an efficient catalyst for aromatic C-H alkylation and fluoroalkylation

The efficient catalysis of oxidative alkylation and fluoroalkylation of aromatic C-H bonds is of paramount importance in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries, and requires the development of convenient Ag0-based nano-architectures with high catalytic activity and recyclability. We prepared Ag-doped silica nanoparticles (Ag0/+@SiO2) with a specific nano-architecture, where ultra-small sized silver cores are immersed in silica spheres, 40 nm in size. The nano-architecture provides an efficient electrochemical oxidation of Ag+@SiO2 without any external oxidant. In turn, Ag+@SiO2 5 mol% results in 100% conversion of arenes into their alkylated and fluoroalkylated derivatives in a single step at room temperature under nanoheterogeneous electrochemical conditions. Negligible oxidative leaching of silver from Ag0/+@SiO2 is recorded during the catalytic coupling of arenes with acetic, difluoroacetic and trifluoroacetic acids, which enables the good recyclability of the catalytic function of the Ag0/+@SiO2 nanostructure. The catalyst can be easily separated from the reaction mixture and reused a minimum of five times upon electrochemical regeneration. The use of the developed Ag0@SiO2 nano-architecture as a heterogeneous catalyst facilitates aromatic C-H bond substitution by alkyl and fluoroalkyl groups, which are privileged structural motifs in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.
