Molecular Dynamic Simulations and Experiments Study on the Mechanical Properties of HTPE/PEG Interpenetrating Polymer Network (IPN) Binders

The mechanical properties of HTPE/PEG interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) binders were systemically studied with molecular dynamics (MDs) simulations and experiments. In this study, an algorithm was used to construct the crosslinking interpenetrating polymer network models and then the mechanical behaviors of Hydroxyl-terminated polyethylene glycol-tetrahydrofuran co-polyether/poly ethylene glycol (HTPE/PEG) IPN models were analyzed at a molecular scale. Firstly, glass transition temperatures (T_g), mean square displacement (MSD) and mechanical properties of IPN crosslinked model simulations showed that better thermomechanical parameters appeared at low temperatures, which were in good agreement with the experimental methods, including dynamic mechanical analysis and uniaxial tensile. Then bond-length distribution was performed to verify the crosslinked structures between prepolymers and curing agents. FTIR-ATR spectra analysis of four IPN binder specimens also gave a convictive result to the special interpenetrating polymer network of polyether polyurethane binders. Cohesive energy density and friction-free volume explained how the micro-structures of IPN crosslinked models and the force of inter-molecule chains affected the mechanical behaviors of the HTPE/PEG polyurethane matrix. Lastly, the morphology of IPN binder specimen tensile fracture indicated the mechanism at different temperatures. These studies were helpful in understanding the mechanical properties of HTPE/PEG interpenetrating polymer network binders and provide molecular insight into mechanisms of mechanical behaviors, which would guide the property improvement of HTPE propellant.

Evaluation of Effective Crosslinking Density for Pseudo-Semi Interpenetrating Polymer Networks Based on Polyether Glycols Mixture by Dynamic Mechanical Analysis

Pseudo-semi interpenetrating polymer networks (pseudo-semi IPNs) are a special example of topological isomerism in macromolecules, which have attracted significant attention in recent years with a high potential in a variety of engineering applications of polymeric materials. In this article, pseudo-semi IPNs were synthetized by sequential polymerization of thermoplastic polymers (TPEs) in the presence of thermosetting elastomer (TSEs) with contents of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 wt.% in a vacuum oven at 60 °C for about 72 h. In addition, this article describes a method for researching the elastic modulus, effective crosslinking density and physical crosslinking density of TSEs and pseudo-semi IPNs. The inherent interactions and entanglements of pseudo-semi IPNs were discussed by analyzing the changes in elastic modulus and effective crosslinking density at different temperatures. The results show that after the TPE was added to the TSE matrix as a plastic-reinforced material, the ductility increased from 89.6% to 491%, the effective crosslinking density was increased by 100% at high temperatures and the strength of the material matrix was significantly improved. Two physical events take place in our pseudo-semi IPNs as result of energy dissipation and polymeric chains mobility.

Synthesis and Properties of Thermally Self-Healing PET Based Linear Polyurethane Containing Diels–Alder Bonds

A Diels–Alder (DA) bond containing poly(tetrahydrofuran)-co-(ethyleneoxide) (PET) based linear polyurethane (PET-DA-PU) was synthesized via a prepolymer process using PET as raw material, DA diol as chain extender agent, and toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (TDI) as coupling agent. The structure of PET-DA-PU was characterized by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (¹H NMR) and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (¹³C NMR). The thermal performance and self-healing behavior of PET-DA-PU were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscope, universal testing machine, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and NMR, respectively. The glass transition temperature of PET-DA-PU was found to be −59 °C. Under the heat treatment at 100 °C, the crack on PET-DA-PU film completely disappeared in 9 min, and the self-healing efficiency that was determined by the recovery of the largest tensile strength after being damaged and healed at 100 °C for 20 min can reach 89.1%. SEM images revealed the micro-cracks along with the blocky aggregated hard segments which were the important reasons for fracture. NMR spectroscopy indicated that the efficiency of retro DA reaction of PET-DA-PU was 70% after 20 min heating treatment at 100 °C. Moreover, the PET-DA-PU/Al/Na₂SO₄ composite was also prepared to simulate propellant formulation and investigated by universal testing machine and SEM; its healing efficiency was up to 87.8% under the same heat treatment process and exhibits good self-healing ability. Therefore, PET-DA-PU may serve as a promising thermally self-healing polymeric binder for future propellant formulations.

Investigation of a Low-Toxicity Energetic Binder for a Solid Propellant: Curing, Microstructures, and Performance

In this work, a promising propellant binder using the energetic branched glycidyl azide polymer (B-GAP) as a matrix and the low-toxic dimer acid diisocyanate (DDI) as a curing agent was prepared, under the catalysis of dibutyl tin dilaurate. The curing kinetics considering the thermal diffusion effect and the reaction endpoint of B-GAP/DDI were investigated by the thermal analysis method and a newly proposed variance method, respectively. Moreover, the buildup of microstructures during curing and the tensile and dynamic mechanical performance of this binder were respectively explored. Results show that there exists an obvious induction period in the beginning of the curing reaction, and the autocatalytic model shows that thermal diffusion can effectively describe the curing process. Shore A hardness of sample stabilizes around 40.78 in the end of curing, and the reaction endpoint of B-GAP/DDI is in the time range of 156-168 h. There exist cross-linking, suspension, and free chains during the whole curing process, and the cross-linking density of the binder reaches approximately 4.0 × 10^-4 mol·cm^-3 when the curing completes. Hydrogen bonding (H-bond) is found to be a strong binder: 53.3% of the carbonyls participates in forming the H-bond. Furthermore, this binder has better mechanical performance and lower glass-transition temperature than the GAP/N100 binder.

Curing Behaviors of Alkynyl-Terminated Copolyether with Glycidyl Azide Polymer in Energetic Plasticizers

Alkynyl-terminated polyethylene oxide−tetrahydrofuran (ATPET) and glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) could be linked through click-chemistry between the alkynyl and azide, and the product may serve a binder for solid propellants. The effects of the energetic plasticizers A3 [1:1 mixture of bis-(2,2-dinitropropy) acetal (BDNPA) and bis-(2,2-dinitropropyl) formal(BDNPN)] and Bu-NENA [N-butyl-N-(2nitroxyethyl) nitramine] on the curing reaction between ATPET and GAP have been studied. A diffusion-ordered nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (DOSY-NMR) approach has been used to monitor the change in the diffusion coefficient of cross-linked polytriazole polyethylene oxide−tetrahydrofuran (PTPET). The change in the diffusion coefficient of PTPET with A3 plasticizer is significantly higher than that of PTPET with Bu-NENA. Viscosity analysis further highlighted the difference between A3 and Bu-NENA in the curing process—the curing curve of PTPET (A3) with time can be divided into two stages, with an inflection point being observed on the fourth day. For PTPET (Bu-NENA), in contrast, only one stage is seen. The above methods, together with gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis, revealed distinct effects of A3 and Bu-NENA on the curing process of PTPET. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that Bu-NENA has little effect on the valence oxidation of copper in the catalyst. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis indicated that Bu-NENA helps to improve the thermal stability of the catalyst. After analysis of several possible factors by means of XPS, modeling with Material Studio and TG, the formation of molecular cages between Bu-NENA and copper is considered to be the reason for the above differences. In this article, GAP (Mn = 4000 g/mol) was used to replace GAP (Mn = 427 g/mol) to successfully synthesize the PTPET elastomer with Bu-NENA plasticizer. Mechanical data measured for the PTPET (Bu-NENA) sample included ε = 34.26 ± 2.98%, and σ = 0.198 ± 0.015 MPa.
