Phytic acid-assisted electrochemically synthesized three-dimensional O, P-functionalized graphene monoliths with high capacitive performance

Anti-Oil-Adhesion Property of Superhydrophilic/Underwater Superoleophobic Phytic Acid-FeIII Complex Coatings

Crude oil adhesion issues are widespread in the petroleum industry, leading to inefficient production and high maintenance costs. Developing efficient antifouling materials and investigating the microscopic adhesion mechanism are of substantial significance. In the present work, a superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic PAFC coating with excellent antifouling properties was constructed by the coordination-driven self-assembly of phytic acid (PA) and FeCl₃ (FC). The atomic force microscope (AFM) droplet probe technique was employed to elucidate the underlying mechanism of the anti-oil-adhesion property of the PAFC coating. Results showed that the PAFC modification achieved the optimum effect at a molar ratio of 1:3 between PA and Fe^III. Applying a (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) interlayer can effectively improve the performance of the PAFC coating on silica substrates. AFM droplet probe experiments indicated that the adhesion force between submerged micrometer-sized oil droplets and PAFC-modified substrates was significantly weaker than that with the untreated substrate. Meanwhile, the adhesion forces between oil droplets and surfaces were inversely proportional to the contact angle of the oil in water and were enhanced by higher salinity, lower collision velocity, and stronger loading force. The oil injection and wall sticking tests also confirmed the effectiveness of the PAFC modification in resisting the adhesion of crude oil.

Low-temperature N-anchored ordered Pt3Co intermetallic nanoparticles as electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation reaction

To enhance nanocatalyst performance and durability for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in a direct methanol fuel cell, small-sized (2.1 nm) and structurally ordered Pt₃Co intermetallic nanoparticles are uniformly anchored onto nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) via a low-temperature N-anchoring method, and the N-doping abilities of different N-containing reagents are compared. After investigating the microstructure of Pt₃Co/N-CNTs and evaluating their catalytic activity for the MOR, the results show that N-doping facilitates the uniform loading of Pt₃Co NPs and plays a crucial role in improving the electrocatalytic activity of Pt₃Co NPs supported on CNTs. Pt₃Co/N-CNT-M with melamine as the N dopant exhibits the highest MOR activity and stability among all N-CNT-supported Pt₃Co NPs and Pt/N-CNT-M. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the doping of N enhances the binding energy of CNTs to Pt₃Co NPs, and the MOR mechanism shows that the introduction of Co is the reason for the enhancement of MOR reaction kinetics. The excellent electrochemical performance of Pt₃Co/N-CNT-M is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of N and Pt₃Co intermetallic nanoparticles. The combination of ordered alloy nanoparticles and high-performance carrier N-CNT-M described herein exhibits great potential for fuel cells and may provide an unequivocal direction for the optimization of catalyst performance.

Fabrication and investigation of novel monochloroacetic acid fortified, tripolyphosphate-crosslinked chitosan for highly efficient adsorption of uranyl ions from radioactive effluents

Chitosan crosslinked with potassium tripolyphosphate (CTPP) and monochloroacetic-acid-modified chitosan crosslinked with potassium tripolyphosphate (MCTPP) were synthesized for removing UO₂²⁺ from acidic radioactive effluents. The influential factors, operational requirements, and interactive mechanisms of the adsorption process were systematically investigated. The mesh-structured composites adsorbed UO₂²⁺ most effectively at pH 5.0. The maximum adsorption capacities for pure chitosan, CTPP, and MCTPP were 374.93, 780.89, and 1487.72 mg/g, respectively. Batch experiments indicated that the pH and adsorbent dose strongly influenced UO₂²⁺ adsorption. MCTPP could adsorb most UO₂²⁺ within 15 min, and equilibrium was reached by ~1 h. The adsorption isotherms indicated that UO₂²⁺ adsorption by MCTPP may be an endothermic single-layer adsorption process. Moreover, common metal ions in single-metal systems only slightly affected this process. The results of instrumental characterization and natural water application suggested that the highly developed pore structure and abundant tripolyphosphate groups in synthesized composites were dominant adsorption contributors besides amino and hydroxyl groups. Successful development of the novel material for efficiently adsorbing UO₂²⁺ and identification of the adsorption mechanism will provide valuable guidance to chitosan modification and further remediation practices of radioactive effluents.

Uniform polypyrrole electrodeposition triggered by phytic acid-guided interface engineering for high energy density flexible supercapacitor

Unevenly distributed polypyrrole (PPy) films/coatings with extensive "dead volumes" via electrodeposition have emerged as a main challenge for high energy density flexible supercapacitor. In this work, we have fabricated a phytic acid-guided graphite carbon felt/polypyrrole (GF@PA@PPy) 3D porous composite with less "dead volumes" via electrodeposition. After the activation of phytic acid (PA), the quantity and content of defects and oxygen-containing groups on the surface of carbon felt (GF) have increased. First, these functional groups improve the hydrophilicity of the surface of GF, resulting in the preferential uniform distribution of pyrrole monomer (Py). While significantly, the synergistic effects between the defects and oxygen-containing groups boost the attraction of pyrrole ring, and thus promotes the formation of perfect PPy films with less "dead volume" on GF. Finally, the supercapacitor assembled from the GF@PA@PPy-40 displays a high areal energy density of 0.0732 mWh cm^-2, exceeding the previously reported PPy-based electrodes values. The deeper understanding of the role for the defects and oxygen-containing groups in the synthesis of PPy/carbon materials offers a new strategy to construct advanced PPy-based supercapacitors.

Versatile Surface Modification of TFC Membrane by Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Phytic Acid-Metal Complexes for Comprehensively Enhanced FO Performance

Polyamide TFC membranes are widely applied in membrane-based water treatment but generally suffer various fouling problems. In this work, the layer-by-layer assembly of phytic acid (PA) and metal ions (M) is constructed on the surface TFC membrane for the first time, to improve the bio/organic fouling resistances and separation performance of TFC membranes simultaneously. The PA molecule with six phosphonic acid groups of strong chelation ability acts as the organic ligand, and the metal ion acts as the inorganic cross-linker, inducing the assembly of hydrophilic and antibacterial PA-M (Ag or Cu) complexes on the TFC membrane surface. Various characterizations including FTIR, XPS, SEM, AFM, and EDX are employed to confirm the successful and uniform modification of PA-M. FO performance of the PA-M modified TFC membranes, i.e., TFC_PA-Ag and TFC_PA-Cu, is optimized by varying PA concentration and assembly cycles, where the water flux can be improved by 57% and 68%, respectively, without compromising the membrane selectivity. Additionally, the PA-M modification improves the biofouling and organic fouling resistances of the TFC membrane remarkably, owing to the enhanced antibacterial ability and hydrophilicity. The modified TFC membranes are also proven to show the excellent stability by the quantitative release test.
