Instant room temperature synthesis of self-assembled emission-tunable gold nanoclusters: million-fold emission enhancement and fluorimetric detection of Zn2+

A molecular dynamics study on the ion-mediated self-assembly of monolayer-protected nanoclusters

We studied the effects of metal and molecular cations on the aggregation of atomically precise monolayer-protected nanoclusters (MPCs) in an explicit solvent using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. While divalent cations such as Zn2+ and Cd2+ promote aggregation by forming ligand-cation-ligand bridges between the MPCs, molecular cations such as tetraethylammonium and cholinium inhibit their aggregation by getting adsorbed into the MPC's ligand shell and reducing the ligand's motion. Here, we studied the aggregation of Au25(SR)18 nanoclusters with two types of ligands, para-mercaptobenzoic acid and D-penicillamine, as prototypical examples.

Excitation-Dependent Fluorescence with Excitation-Selective Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Hierarchically Organized Atomic Nanoclusters

Nanometer-scaled objects are known to have dimension-related properties, but sometimes the assembly of such objects can lead to the emergence of other properties. Here, we show the assembly of atomically precise gold nanoclusters into large fibrillar structures that are featuring excitation-dependent luminescence with an excitation-selective circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), even though all components are achiral. The origin of CPL in the assembly of atomic clusters has been attributed to the hierarchical organization of atomic clusters into fibrillar structures, mediated via a hydrogen bonding interaction with a surfactant. We follow the assembly process both experimentally and computationally showing the advance in the structural formation along with its chiroptical electronic properties, i.e., circular dichroism (CD) and CPL. Our study here can assist in the rational design of materials featuring chiroptical properties, thus leading to a controlled CPL activity.

Viewing Aggregation-Induced Emission of Metal Nanoclusters from Design Strategies to Applications

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-type metal nanoclusters (NCs) represent an innovative type of luminescent metal NCs whose aggregates exhibit superior performance over that of individuals, attracting wide attention over the past decade. Here, we give a concise overview of the progress made in this area, from design strategies to applications. The representative design strategies, including solvent-induction, cation-induction, crystallization-induction, pH-induction, ligand inheritance, surface constraint, and minerals- and MOF-confinement, are first discussed. We then present the typical practical applications of AIE-type metal NCs in the various sectors of bioimaging, biological diagnosis and therapy (e.g., antibacterial agents, cancer radiotherapy), light-emitting diodes (LEDs), detection assays, and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). To this end, we present our viewpoints on the promises and challenges of AIE-type metal NCs, which may shed light on the design of highly luminescent metal NCs, stimulating new vitality and serving as a continuous boom for the metal NC community in the future.

Ce3+-induced Fluorescence Amplification of Copper Nanoclusters Based on Aggregation-induced Emission for Specific Sensing 2,6-pyridine Dicarboxylic Acid

A straightforward, cost-effective and biocompatible reduction approach was applied to fabricate soluble but non-luminous glutathione-stabilized copper nanocluster (GSH-CuNCs). Surprisingly, as high as 1 × 10³ times fluorescence enhancement was acquired when Ce³⁺ was injected at an extremely low concentration of only 18 µM. Ce³⁺ outperformed other rare-earth metal ions in terms of inducing fluorescence amplification of the non-luminous GSH-CuNCs. Furthermore, Ce³⁺ was employed as inducer for aggregation-induce emission (AIE) effect as well as reactant to coordinate with target of 2,6-pyridine dicarboxylic acid (DPA) due to the stronger coordination ability between Ce³⁺ and DPA than that of Ce³⁺ and GSH. As a result, the Ce³⁺/GSH-CuNCs ensemble was developed as a novel sensor to detect DPA in the "on-off" mode. When DPA was introduced into the sensor, Ce³⁺ failed to interact with GSH and detached from the surface of GSH-CuNCs, leading to fluorescence quenching. In addition, static quenching process and internal filtration effect (IFE) between Ce³⁺/GSH-CuNCs and DPA were also responsible for fluorescence quenching effect. A good linear relationship was obtained from 0.3 µM to 18 µM, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.19 µM. The as-proposed probe displayed high specificity to DPA and provided a simple, fast rapid and cheap method for construction this type of ensemble sensors to detect other targets.

Luminescent Sensors Based on the Assembly of Coinage Metal Nanoclusters

Coinage metals, such as Cu, Ag and Au, can form nanoclusters, which, when functionalized with ligands, have unique electronic and optical properties and are widely used in biomedical imaging, remote sensing, labeling, catalytic, etc. The mechanisms, structures and properties of nanocluster assemblies have been well reviewed. However, the collections and analyses of nanocluster assemblies for sensor application are few. This review examines different nanocluster sensor platforms with a focus on the assembly and analysis of the assembly processes and examples of applications.

Surfactant stabilized gold nanomaterials for environmental sensing applications - A review

Surfactant stabilized Gold (Au) nanomaterials (NMs) have been documented extensively in recent years for numerous sensing applications in the academic literature. Despite the crucial role these surfactants play in the sensing applications, the comprehensive reviews that highlights the fundamentals associated with these assemblies and impact of these surfactants on the properties and sensing mechanisms are still quite scare. This review is an attempt in organizing the vast literature associated with this domain by providing critical insights into the fundamentals, preparation methodologies and sensing mechanisms of these surfactant stabilized Au NMs. For the simplification, the surfactants are divided into the typical and advanced surfactants and the Au NMs are classified into Au nanoparticles (NPs) and Au nanoclusters (NCs) depending upon the complexity in structure and size of the NMs respectively. The preparative methodologies are also elaborated for enhancing the understanding of the readers regarding such assemblies. The case studies regarding surfactant stabilized Au NMs were further divided into colorimetric sensors, surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) based sensors, luminescence-based sensors, and electrochemical/electrical sensors depending upon the property utilized by the sensor for the sensing of an analyte. Future perspectives are also discussed in detail for the researchers looking for further progress in that particular research domain.

Self-Assembled Metal Nanoclusters: Driving Forces and Structural Correlation with Optical Properties

Studies on self-assembly of metal nanoclusters (MNCs) are an emerging field of research owing to their significant optical properties and potential applications in many areas. Fabricating the desired self-assembly structure for specific implementation has always been challenging in nanotechnology. The building blocks organize themselves into a hierarchical structure with a high order of directional control in the self-assembly process. An overview of the recent achievements in the self-assembly chemistry of MNCs is summarized in this review article. Here, we investigate the underlying mechanism for the self-assembly structures, and analysis reveals that van der Waals forces, electrostatic interaction, metallophilic interaction, and amphiphilicity are the crucial parameters. In addition, we discuss the principles of template-mediated interaction and the effect of external stimuli on assembly formation in detail. We also focus on the structural correlation of the assemblies with their photophysical properties. A deep perception of the self-assembly mechanism and the degree of interactions on the excited state dynamics is provided for the future synthesis of customizable MNCs with promising applications.

Self-Assembly of Precision Noble Metal Nanoclusters: Hierarchical Structural Complexity, Colloidal Superstructures, and Applications

Ligand protected noble metal nanoparticles are excellent building blocks for colloidal self-assembly. Metal nanoparticle self-assembly offers routes for a wide range of multifunctional nanomaterials with enhanced optoelectronic properties. The emergence of atomically precise monolayer thiol-protected noble metal nanoclusters has overcome numerous challenges such as uncontrolled aggregation, polydispersity, and directionalities faced in plasmonic nanoparticle self-assemblies. Because of their well-defined molecular compositions, enhanced stability, and diverse surface functionalities, nanoclusters offer an excellent platform for developing colloidal superstructures via the self-assembly driven by surface ligands and metal cores. More importantly, recent reports have also revealed the hierarchical structural complexity of several nanoclusters. In this review, the formulation and periodic self-assembly of different noble metal nanoclusters are focused upon. Further, self-assembly induced amplification of physicochemical properties, and their potential applications in molecular recognition, sensing, gas storage, device fabrication, bioimaging, therapeutics, and catalysis are discussed. The topics covered in this review are extensively associated with state-of-the-art achievements in the field of precision noble metal nanoclusters.

Amphiphilic Au Nanoclusters Modulated by Magnetic Gemini Surfactants as a Cysteine Chemosensor and an MRI Contrast Agent

Cationic magnetic Gemini surfactants (mag-G-surfs), [C₁₄H₂₉(CH₃)₂N(CH₂)₂N(CH₃)₂C₁₄H₂₉]²⁺·2[XCl₃Br]^- (14-2-14·2X, X = Ce, Gd, or Ho), efficiently induce the aggregation of glutathione-protected Au nanoclusters (NCs) (GSH-Au NCs). These magnetic luminescent aggregates not only possess aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior but also display aggregation-induced magnetic enhancement. In particular, 14-2-14·2Ce and 14-2-14·2Gd have a better effect on boosting the luminescence intensity, quantum yield (QY), and luminescence lifetime (τ). The luminescent aggregates of GSH-Au NCs triggered by 14-2-14·2Gd or 14-2-14·2Ho exhibit more favorable paramagnetic behavior. Other Au NCs containing a Au(I)-thiolate complex shell also exhibit the obvious AIE phenomenon after introducing 14-2-14·2Gd, demonstrating the luminescence enhancement effect of mag-G-surfs. The luminescent aggregate 14-2-14·2Ce@GSH-Au NCs can serve as a "light up" fluorometric probe to detect cysteine selectively with the detection limit (DL) of 36 μM, and the magnetic luminescent aggregate 14-2-14·2Gd@GSH-Au NCs has the potential to be a novel contrast agent in T₁-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging due to its satisfactory contrasting ability.

Four orders-of-magnitude enhancement in the two-photon excited photoluminescence of homoleptic gold thiolate nanoclusters following zinc ion-induced aggregation

Herein we report unprecedented determination of the molar mass of zinc mediated assemblies of homoleptic gold nanoclusters, based on charge detection mass spectrometry measurements. The accurate determination of the molar mass of zinc coordinated assemblies of gold clusters has further allowed unambiguous determination of the two-photon excited photoluminescence cross section of the same. Furthermore, in line with one-photon excited photoluminescence measurements, four orders-of-magnitude enhancement in two-photon excited photoluminescence of gold nanoclusters has been observed following complexation with zinc ions. The study reported herein is envisioned to not only deepen the fundamental understanding of the multiphoton excitation properties of atomic clusters but also widen their application potential as luminescence markers.

Aggregation-induced emission enhancement of gold nanoclusters in metal-organic frameworks for highly sensitive fluorescent detection of bilirubin

A fluorescence analysis method based on gold nanocluster (AuNC) and metal-organic framework (MOF) composite materials (AuNCs@ZIF-8) was established for highly sensitive detection of bilirubin (BR). First, AuNCs@ZIF-8 was successfully obtained by co-precipitation and displayed an aggregation-induced emission enhancement by the confinement effect of the MOFs (i.e., ZIF-8). The product showed approximately 7.0 times enhancement in the quantum yield and longer fluorescence lifetime from 2.29 μs to 11.51 μs compared with AuNCs. When BR combined with the metal node Zn2+ of ZIF-8, the skeleton of the composite was destroyed, leading to a great decrease in the fluorescence intensity by the transformation of the AuNCs from the aggregated state to dispersed state. The linear range for the detection of BR was 0.1-5.0 μM, with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.07 μM (S/N = 3). The AuNCs@ZIF-8 exhibited a selective response toward BR within 5 min and detected BR in human serum. The long-wavelength emission by AuNCs avoided the interference of the complex biomatrix background fluorescence, indicating their great application prospects for clinical diagnosis.

Purification and separation of ultra-small metal nanoclusters

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) are ultra-small nanoparticles intermediate in size between small molecule complexes and nanoparticles. NCs with tunable surface functionality feature unique physical and chemical properties, however these properties are frequently compromised by the presence of undesired components such as excess ligands or mixtures of NCs. In a typical synthesis process, different NCs can be formed with varying numbers of metal atoms and/or ligands, and even NCs with the same number of metal atoms and ligands can have different spatial structures. The separation of pure NCs is important because different species have distinct optical and catalytic behavior. However, NCs can be difficult to purify or separate for a range of reasons. In this review, we discuss established and emerging approaches for NC purification/separation, with a focus on choosing the appropriate method depending on NC and application.

Structure-dependent luminescent copper nanoclusters: self-assembly and morphological evolution

Investigation of the surface confinement effect of copper nanoclusters: construction of an ultrasensitive fluorescence turn-on bio-enzyme sensing platform

Copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) have attracted considerable research interest due to their good physicochemical properties, ease of preparation, and low price. However, the low quantum yield and poor stability in aqueous solutions have greatly limited their applications. In order to improve the fluorescence properties and stability of CuNCs, in this paper, the surface confinement effect of CuNCs based on 2D layered double hydroxide (LDH) was proposed to prepare the fluorescent composites of glutathione protected CuNCs and LDH (GS-CuNCs/LDH) with excellent quantum yield and long fluorescence lifetime. Moreover, a novel, simple, and ultrasensitive fluorescence assay for the detection of hyaluronidase was proposed based on the surface confinement effect. The limit of detection for hyaluronidase was as low as 0.014 U mL-1. For the first time, this work developed a bio-enzyme sensing platform based on the surface confinement effect, which can serve as a promising candidate in biosensing.

Visible Light Excitation-Induced Luminescence from Gold Nanoclusters Following Surface Ligand Complexation with Zn2+ for Daylight Sensing and Cellular Imaging

Herein, we report a complexation reaction-mediated extended aggregation of gold nanoclusters exhibiting luminescence under visible light excitation. The complexation reaction between the carboxylate groups of mercaptopropionic acid and zinc ions induced the aggregation of gold nanoclusters, which featured bright green luminescence upon excitation with visible light of wavelength 450 nm and beyond. This luminescence of aggregated Au NCs, easily discernible with bare eyes (under broad daylight excitation), was used as a probe for luminescence-based detection of molecules based on the p K_a values of the latter. This aspect has been an unfilled dream of scientists pursuing research on the development of nanoscale sensors, as luminescence-based detection techniques offer a greater degree of accuracy and sensitivity compared to absorption-based methods, and was thus far an unexploited/untapped area by nanoscale materials. Moreover, facile imaging of mammalian cells was achieved using these aggregated clusters upon excitation with visible light. This study demonstrates the utility of luminescent nanoclusters, akin to organic dyes, as materials active under visible light excitation. Thus, the complexation reaction-based tailoring of the optical properties of nanoclusters served as an effective tool in pushing the absorption maxima of the nanoclusters from an ultraviolet to visible range, enabling the luminescence of nanoclusters under broad daylight excitation. Hence, the work embodied herein offers a unique route to widen the application potential of metal nanoclusters as sensors and bioimaging agents operating under visible light excitation.

Self-Assembly of Metal Nanoclusters for Aggregation-Induced Emission

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is an intriguing strategy to enhance the luminescence of metal nanoclusters (NCs). However, the morphologies of aggregated NCs are often irregular and inhomogeneous, leading to instability and poor color purity of the aggregations, which greatly limit their further potential in optical applications. Inspired by self-assembly techniques, manipulating metal NCs into well-defined architectures has achieved success. The self-assembled metal NCs often exhibit enhancing emission stability and intensity compared to the individually or randomly aggregated ones. Meanwhile, the emission color of metal NCs becomes tunable. In this review, we summarize the synthetic strategies involved in self-assembly of metal NCs for the first time. For each synthetic strategy, we describe the self-assembly mechanisms involved and the dependence of optical properties on the self-assembly. Finally, we outline the current challenges to and perspectives on the development of this area.

Room-Temperature Delayed Fluorescence of Gold Nanoclusters in Zinc-Mediated Two-Dimensional Crystalline Assembly

We report that complexation-reaction-mediated two-dimensional crystalline assembly of gold (Au₁₄) nanoclusters (NCs) exhibits room-temperature delayed fluorescence at 605 nm, with an unprecedented long lifetime of 0.5 ms and an exceptionally high quantum yield of 19.1 ± 0.9%. Interestingly, the as-synthesized Au NCs had a very weak delayed fluorescence signal. The enhancement in delayed fluorescence of Au NCs upon formation of assembly has been attributed to the crystallization-induced structural rigidity, which restricted the nonradiative transitions and enhanced the excited-state lifetime. The attainment of crystalline organization was substantiated by electron diffraction analysis. A possible structure was established based on experimental results and computational optimizations. Atomic force microscopy revealed the formation of multilayered two-dimensional nanosheets with thickness of 2.44 ± 0.48 nm.

Chemical etching of pH-sensitive aggregation-induced emission-active gold nanoclusters for ultra-sensitive detection of cysteine

This study reports the utilization of thiol-induced chemical etching of aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active Au nanoclusters (NCs) for the facile, sensitive, and selective detection of cysteine. The AIE-active Au NCs were formed in an acidic solution containing excess Au(i)-thiolate complexes. At an acidic pH (2.0), the emission of these Au NCs was enhanced by cysteine at a concentratioin below 1 mM. However, the emission was quenched by cysteine at a high concentration, e.g., 500 mM, via the thiol-induced etching of gold, although the process occurred very slowly. Interestingly, in the absence of cysteine, increasing the solution pH enhanced the emission, while the presence of cysteine remarkably accelerated the etching-induced quenching process. The complete quenching of the emission by excess cysteine at pH 2.0 and the enhancement of the emission by the increasing pH in the absence of cysteine indicated that aurophilicity might not be involved in the AIE of the Au NCs prepared using glutathione (GSH) both as the reducing and protecting reagent. On the other hand, the etching process involved the penetration of cysteine molecules through the Au(i)-thiolate complexes, which could assemble or disassemble around the embedded Au NCs in response to the solution pH to get access to the innermost Au(0) cores. Therefore, a facile, sensitive, and selective method for the detection of cysteine was established. This method exhibited an extremely wide linear range as wide as nine orders of magnitude above the cysteine concentration, including two linear regions of the relative emission intensity of the Au NCs versus the logarithm of cysteine concentration, from 10 pM to 150 μM (correlation coefficient, 0.99851) and from 150 μM to 2 mM (correlation coefficient, 0.99866). An ultra-low limit of detection of 6.3 pM (S/N = 3) was also achieved. The developed method showed superior selectivity for cysteine relative to the 19 other natural amino acids and GSH. The method was applied for the analysis of human serum samples spiked with cysteine with satisfactory results. This study demonstrates the potential of the thiol-induced chemical etching approach as a powerful tool for studying luminescent metal NCs.

Engineering the Self-Assembly Induced Emission of Copper Nanoclusters as 3D Nanomaterials with Mesoporous Sphere Structures by the Crosslinking of Ce3

Aggregation-induced emission has provided fluorescence enhancement strategies for metal nanoclusters. However, the morphology of the aggregated nanoclusters tended to be irregular due to the random aggregated route, which would result in the formation of an unstable product. Herein, copper nanoclusters were directly synthesized by using l-cysteine as both the reducing and protection ligand. Initially, the structure of the product was irregular. Furthermore, Ce3+ was introduced to re-arrange the aggregates through a crosslinking avenue. It was interesting to find that well-ordered three-dimensional nanomaterials with mesoporous sphere structures were obtained after re-aggregation. On the basis of the stability test at a relatively high temperature and the light-emitting diode fabrication investigation, it revealed that the regulated product demonstrated more promising stability and color purity for practical applications than the random aggregated product with irregular structures.

Luminescence polarization of gold nanoclusters reveals directional self-assembly

Study of luminescence polarization of spherical nanoclusters arising purely through a self-assembly route has not been explored to date. Here we introduce a gold nanocluster system that explicitly shows luminescence polarization solely through a self-assembly pathway. The directionality involved in the self-assembly governs the luminescence polarization of the nanoclusters. The steady-state and time-resolved emission anisotropy measurements revealed the anisotropically ordered behavior of one-dimensionally self-assembled green emitting nanoclusters. On the contrary, the randomly self-assembled yellow emitting nanoclusters exhibited insignificant luminescence anisotropy.

Modulation of the optical color of Au nanoclusters and its application in ratiometric photoluminescence detection

A novel strategy for the optical color modulation of glutathione stabilized Au nanoclusters is reported and applied in ratiometric photoluminescence detection.
