Shape and size dependent nonlinear refraction and absorption in citrate-stabilized, near-IR plasmonic silver nanopyramids

Nonlinear Absorption and Refraction of Highly Monodisperse and Luminescent ZnTe Quantum Dots and Their Self-Assembled Nanostructures: Implications for Optoelectronic Devices

Zinc telluride (ZnTe) quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized by a unique supersaturation-controlled aqueous route. For a given pH, increasing the degree of initial supersaturation led to a decrease in the average diameter (d _avg) of the QDs and increased monodispersity. Three samples of ZnTe QDs having average sizes of 0.8, 1.7, and 2.2 nm were synthesized (hence named ZnTe_0.8, ZnTe_1.7, and ZnTe_2.2). Nonlinear absorption (NLA) and nonlinear refraction (NLR) of these colloidal ZnTe QDs of different sizes were investigated by the Z-scan technique using a continuous He-Ne laser (632.8 nm, 15 mW). Isotropic assembly of ZnTe_2.2 leads to the formation of nanoballs (hence named ZnTe_NB). The NLA profile of smaller QDs, ZnTe_1.7 and ZnTe_0.8, was found to follow a three-photon absorption (3PA) model, while relatively bigger QDs, ZnTe_2.2, followed a two-photon absorption (2PA) model. On moving from ZnTe_0.8 to ZnTe_1.7, the three-photon absorption coefficient (γ) decreases by 26% (3.00 × 10^-4 → 2.21 × 10^-4 cm³/MW²). The two-photon absorption coefficient (β) for ZnTe_2.2 is 0.3 cm/MW. For a 63% decrease in average diameter (2.2 → 0.8 nm), the refractive index (n ₂) increases by 45% (2.48 × 10^-2 → 3.6 × 10^-2 cm²/MW). Overall, the NLR coefficient shows a decreasing trend with size. Upon isotropic self-assembly, ZnTe_NB, there is a significant increase in the NLR coefficient by 40% (2.48 × 10^-2 → 3.48 × 10^-2 cm²/MW) and a simultaneous decrease in the NLA coefficient by 45% (0.3 → 0.166 cm/MW). The figure of merit was also determined for all of the samples, and it was found that ZnTe_2.2 and ZnTe_0.8 were best suited for all-optical device applications. Further, the self-assembled nanostructures are promising for making optical waveguides for supercontinuum generation (SCG).

Pluronic-loaded Silver Nanoparticles/Photosensitizers Nanohybrids: Influence of the Polymer Chain Length on Metal-enhanced Photophysical Properties

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are incredibly versatile nanostructures that more recently have been exploited to create advanced optoelectronic materials due enhancement of local magnetic field after its irradiation. However, the use of AgNPs as nanoantennas to amplify photophysical properties of close photosensitizer (PS) molecules in photodynamic therapy is still underexplored. The reason for that is the difficulty to control crucial parameters such as silver-PS distance in aqueous solution. In this scenario, here we propose a nanohybrid system where AgNP/PS distance is controlled by a thin layer of different Pluronic copolymers. The controllable distance and aqueous stability of proposed nanohybrids allow a tunable enhancement of fluorescence emission and singlet oxygen generation of some selected PS molecules. A detailed mechanism investigation demonstrated that the observed metal-enhanced photophysics is due to magnetic field enhancement close to AgNP surface (AgNP/PS distance-controlled effect) and the resonant coupling of AgNP hot electrons and HOMO-LUMO energies of the PS (AgNP/PS spectral overlap-controlled effect). These results show that the rational design in engineering new nanohybrid structures allowed photophysical improvement of PS molecules in aqueous solution in a tunable way and point out Pluronic-based AgNP/PS nanohybrids as a smart material for further developments aiming at theranostic applications in photodynamic therapy.

Photochemical Synthesis of Silver Nanodecahedrons under Blue LED Irradiation and Their SERS Activity

Silver nanodecahedrons were successfully synthesized by a photochemical method under irradiation of blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The formation of silver nanodecahedrons at different LED irradiation times (0–72 h) was thoroughly investigated by employing different characterization methods such as ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that silver nanodecahedrons (AgNDs) were formed from silver nanoseeds after 6 h of LED irradiation. The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effects of the synthesized AgNDs were also studied in comparison with those of spherical silver nanoparticles in the detection of 4-mercapto benzoic acid. Silver nanodecahedrons with a size of 48 nm formed after 48 h of LED irradiation displayed stronger SERS properties than spherical nanoparticles because of electromagnetic enhancement. The formation mechanism of silver nanodecahedrons is also reported in our study. The results showed that multihedral silver nanoseeds favored the formation of silver nanodecahedrons.

Hollow Silver Nanostructures: The Role of Capping Agents in Tailoring the Shape, Structure, and Plasmonic Properties

The shape- and structure-directing ability of capping agents, namely, acetic acid (AA) and folic acid (FA), has been analyzed in the synthesis of hollow plasmonic nanostructures via the nanoscale Kirkendall effect. FA was found to possess both shape-directing and structure-directing abilities when spherical solid Ag2O nanoparticles were transformed into hollow silver nanocubes (HAgNCs). In contrast, AA acted only as a structure-directing agent in the transformation from solid Ag2O nanospheres to hollow Ag nanospheres (HAgNSs). FA capping leads to enhanced plasmon tunability range from 535 to 640 nm in the hollow silver nanostructures. The size and shape of nanostructures were analyzed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). HRTEM revealed that the outer diameter of AA-capped HAgNSs is 50 ± 10 nm while edge-length for FA-capped HAgNCs is 100 ± 15 nm. The diameter of inner void space was found to be 30 ± 5 and 43 ± 5 nm for HAgNSs and HAgNCs, respectively. The phase purity of the hollow nanostructures was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray measurements. Due to unique structural and plasmonic features, FA-capped HAgNCs are well-suited for biomedical applications.

Self-Saturable Absorption and Reverse-Saturable Absorption Effects in Diamond-Like Carbon Films with Embedded Copper Nanoparticles

Nonlinear optical properties (self-saturable absorption and reverse-saturable absorption) of diamond-like carbon films with variable amounts of embedded copper nanoparticle (DLC:Cu) films deposited by high power pulse magnetron sputtering were studied in dependence on deposition conditions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to study elemental composition and He ion microscopy to study changes of the size, shape, and concentration of the Cu nanoparticles deposited using different pulse currents as well as argon and acetylene gas ratios. Raman scattering spectra of DLC:Cu films studied were typical of diamond-like carbon (including the films with a high Cu atomic concentration where it was up to 60 atom % and carbon atomic concentration was less than 20 atom %). In all cases, in the absorption spectra of DLC:Cu films, the surface plasmon resonance-related peak was recorded. The position of the plasmonic peak for all the deposited nanocomposite films was in a 590–620 nm range. For the samples containing lower amounts of copper, reverse-saturable absorption was found. Transient optical absorption measurements have shown that the reverse-saturable absorption is typical for the samples with a lower relaxation time. The longer relaxation times recorded during transient optical absorption measurements correlated with the presence of the saturable absorption effect. For DLC:Cu samples containing 58–62 atom % Cu, some optical inhomogeneities were observed. The samples in different places demonstrated either saturable absorption or reverse-saturable absorption. The presence of both saturable and reverse-saturable absorption effects in the same sample is explained by the lateral inhomogeneities of the DLC:Cu films.
