Dynamic Electrostatic Interfacial Engineering for Block Copolymer Microparticles with Reversible Structures

Responsive nanoparticle surfactants (NPSs) can dynamically and reversibly modulate the interfacial interactions between incompatible components, which are essential in the interfacial catalysis, corrosion, and self-assembly of block copolymers (BCPs). However, NPSs with stimuli-responsive behavior often involve tedious chemical synthesis and surface modifications. Herein, we propose a strategy to in situ construct a kind of dynamic and reversible NPSs by the interfacial electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged nanoparticles (NPs) and the positively charged homopolymers. The NPSs assembled at the oil/water interface reduce the interfacial tension and direct the confined assembly of BCP. Meanwhile, the dynamic NPSs can be disassembled by increasing the pH value or introducing competitive electrostatic attractions, which can dynamically and reversibly change the interfacial properties as well as the alignment of polymer chains, enabling BCP microparticles with reversibly switchable lamellar and cylindrical structures. Furthermore, by the introduction of aggregation-induced emission luminogens as tails to the NPSs, the reversible transformation of BCP microparticles can be visualized by fluorescence emission, which is dependent on the nanostructures of microparticles. This work establishes a concept for dynamically manipulating interfacial interactions and reversibly switching BCP microparticles without time-consuming NPS synthesis, showing promising applications in the fabrication of smart materials with switchable structures and properties.

Controlling the Formation of Polyhedral Block Copolymer Nanoparticles: Insights from Process Variables and Dynamic Modeling

This study delves into the formation of nanoscale polyhedral block copolymer particles (PBCPs) exhibiting cubic, octahedral, and variant geometries. These structures represent a pioneering class that has never been fabricated previously. PBCP features distinct variations in curvature on the outer surface, aligning with the edges and corners of polyhedral shapes. This characteristic sharply contrasts with previous block copolymers (BCPs), which displayed a smooth spherical surface. The emergence of these cornered morphologies presents an intriguing and counterintuitive phenomenon and is linked to process parameters, such as evaporation rates and initial concentration, while keeping other variables constant. Using a system of coupled Cahn-Hillard (CCH) equations, we uncover the mechanisms driving polyhedral particle formation, emphasizing the importance of controlling relaxation parameters for shape variable u and microphase separation v. This unconventional approach, differing from traditional steepest descent method, allows for precise control and diverse polyhedral particle generation. Accelerating the shape variable u proves crucial for expediting precipitation and aligns with experimental observations. Employing the above theoretical model, we achieve shape predictions for particles and the microphase separation within them, which overcomes the limitations of ab initio computations. Additionally, a numerical stability analysis discerns the transient nature versus local minimizer characteristics. Overall, our findings contribute to understanding the complex interplay between process variables and the morphology of polyhedral BCP nanoparticles.

Regioselective Seeded Polymerization in Block Copolymer Nanoparticles: Post‐Assembly Control of Colloidal Features

Post‐assembly modifications are efficient tools to adjust colloidal features of block copolymer (BCP) particles. However, existing methods often address particle shape, morphology, and chemical functionality individually. For simultaneous control, we transferred the concept of seeded polymerization to phase separated BCP particles. Key to our approach is the regioselective polymerization of (functional) monomers inside specific BCP domains. This was demonstrated in striped PS‐b‐P2VP ellipsoids. Here, polymerization of styrene preferably occurs in PS domains and increases PS lamellar thickness up to 5‐fold. The resulting asymmetric lamellar morphology also changes the particle shape, i.e., increases the aspect ratio. Using 4‐vinylbenzyl azide as co‐monomer, azides as chemical functionalities can be added selectively to the PS domains. Overall, our simple and versatile method gives access to various multifunctional BCP colloids from a single batch of pre‐formed particles.

Spiral- and meridian-patterned spheres self-assembled from block copolymer/homopolymer binary systems

Spiral nanostructures, mainly in the 2D form, have been observed in polymer self-assembly, while well-defined 3D spirals are rarely reported. Here we report that a binary system containing polypeptide-based block copolymers and homopolymers can self-assemble into well-defined spiral spheres (3D spirals), in which the homopolymers form the core and the copolymers form the spirals. Upon increasing the preparation temperature, meridian spheres were obtained. Mixing polypeptide block copolymers with opposite backbone chirality also leads to the formation of meridian spheres. In the meridian patterns, a tighter packing manner of the phenyl groups appended to the polypeptide blocks was observed, which is responsible for the spiral-to-meridian transitions. This work enriches the research of spiral assemblies and provides a facile route to switch chiral/achiral nanostructures by regulating the packing manner of the pendant groups.

Polymerization-Induced Hierarchical Self-Assembly: From Monomer to Complex Colloidal Molecules and Beyond

The nanoscale hierarchical design that draws inspiration from nature's biomaterials allows the enhancement of material performance and enables multifarious applications. Self-assembly of block copolymers represents one of these artificial techniques that provide an elegant bottom-up strategy for the synthesis of soft colloidal hierarchies. Fast-growing polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) renders a one-step process for the polymer synthesis and in situ self-assembly at high concentrations. Nevertheless, it is exceedingly challenging for the fabrication of hierarchical colloids via aqueous PISA, simply because most monomers produce kinetically trapped spheres except for a few PISA-suitable monomers. We demonstrate here a sequential one-pot synthesis of hierarchically self-assembled polymer colloids with diverse morphologies via aqueous PISA that overcomes the limitation. Complex formation of water-immiscible monomers with cyclodextrin via "host-guest" inclusion, followed by sequential aqueous polymerization, provides a linear triblock terpolymer that can in situ self-assemble into hierarchical nanostructures. To access polymer colloids with different morphologies, three types of linear triblock terpolymers were synthesized through this methodology, which allows the preparation of AX_n-type colloidal molecules (CMs), core-shell-corona micelles, and raspberry-like nanoparticles. Furthermore, the phase separations between polymer blocks in nanostructures were revealed by transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy-infrared spectroscopy. The proposed mechanism explained how the interfacial tensions and glass transition temperatures of the core-forming blocks affect the morphologies. Overall, this study provides a scalable method of the production of CMs and other hierarchical structures. It can be applied to different block copolymer formulations to enrich the complexity of morphology and enable diverse functions of nano-objects.

Insights on drying and precipitation dynamics of respiratory droplets from the perspective of COVID-19

We isolate a nano-colloidal droplet of surrogate mucosalivary fluid to gain fundamental insights into airborne nuclei's infectivity and viral load distribution during the COVID-19 pandemic. The salt-water solution containing particles at reported viral loads is acoustically trapped in a contactless environment to emulate the drying, flow, and precipitation dynamics of real airborne droplets. Similar experiments validate observations with the surrogate fluid with samples of human saliva samples from a healthy subject. A unique feature emerges regarding the final crystallite dimension; it is always 20%-30% of the initial droplet diameter for different sizes and ambient conditions. Airborne-precipitates nearly enclose the viral load within its bulk while the substrate precipitates exhibit a high percentage (∼80-90%) of exposed virions (depending on the surface). This work demonstrates the leveraging of an inert nano-colloidal system to gain insights into an equivalent biological system.

Effect of surface morphology change of polystyrene microspheres through etching on protein corona and phagocytic uptake

Surface physicochemistry properties of polymer particles are crucial for protein corona formation and macrophage phagocytosis when they contact with living body. In this work, polystyrene microspheres (PS-MSs) were selected as a model of polymer microparticles and fabricated by chromic acid etching through controlling conditions to obtain different surface morphology structures and to investigate their effect on the protein adsorption and phagocytic uptake of PS-MSs. The adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and fibrinogen (FIB) on PS-MSs showed almost the same tendency, i.e. the etched PS-MSs presented lower protein adsorption compared with original microspheres. The adsorption of BSA and FIB was the lowest when the protuberances on the etched surfaces were maximum and the size of the protuberances was minimum. Furthermore, the surface morphologies of PS-MSs were influenced in return not only by the amounts of proteins but also by protein types. Meanwhile, the macrophages phagocytosis of PS-MSs depended on the amounts and kinds of adsorbed proteins, especially the albumin content. In a word, phagocytosis and protein adsorption can be regulated by microsphere morphologies through etching, which provides a promising strategy to avoid invalid uptake for polymer particles such as drug delivery carriers.

Ashura Particles: Experimental and Theoretical Approaches for Creating Phase-Separated Structures of Ternary Blended Polymers in Three-Dimensionally Confined Spaces

Unique morphologies were found in binary and ternary polymer blended particles, including Ashura-type phase separation, which has three different polymer components on the particle surface. The morphologies of phase-separated structures in the binary polymer blended particles are discussed in terms of the surface tensions of the blended polymers. Structural control of ternary polymer blended particles was achieved based on the combination of polymers by examining binary polymer blended particles. A theoretical approach based on the Cahn-Hilliard equations gives identical morphologies with the experimental results. This work opens the way to creating polymer particles with sophisticated nanostructures by controlling their morphologies as predicted by theoretical simulations.

From Block Copolymer Nanotubes to Nanospheres: Nonsolvent-Induced Morphology Transformation Using Porous Templates

Block copolymer nanostructures have attracted great attention because of the wide range of applications such as sensors and drug delivery. The fabrication of block copolymer nanostructures with controlled morphologies and sizes, however, is still challenging. Here, we study the fabrication of nanotubes and nanospheres of polystyrene- block-polybutadiene (PS- b-PBD) using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. When PS- b-PBD solutions in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone are introduced into the nanopores of the AAO templates applying the traditional solution wetting method, PS- b-PBD nanotubes can be obtained. When PS- b-PBD solutions in the nanopores are in contact with a nonsolvent, acetic acid, PS- b-PBD nanospheres are formed. Two possible mechanisms are proposed to discuss the formation of the nonsolvent-driven morphology transformation, including the Rayleigh-instability-type transformation mechanism and the nucleation and growth mechanism. The effect of the polymer concentrations on the internal morphologies of the PS- b-PBD nanostructures is discussed; at higher concentrations, PS- b-PBD nanocapsules can also be prepared. Furthermore, core-shell PS- b-PBD/polymethylmethacrylate nanospheres can be fabricated using this strategy with polymer blend solutions. This work not only demonstrates a simple strategy to control the morphologies of block copolymer nanostructures but also deepens the understanding of the interactions between polymer solutions and solvents.

Rapid Production of Internally Structured Colloids by Flash Nanoprecipitation of Block Copolymer Blends

Colloids with internally structured geometries have shown great promise in applications ranging from biosensors to optics to drug delivery, where the internal particle structure is paramount to performance. The growing demand for such nanomaterials necessitates the development of a scalable processing platform for their production. Flash nanoprecipitation (FNP), a rapid and inherently scalable colloid precipitation technology, is used to prepare internally structured colloids from blends of block copolymers and homopolymers. As revealed by a combination of experiments and simulations, colloids prepared from different molecular weight diblock copolymers adopt either an ordered lamellar morphology consisting of concentric shells or a disordered lamellar morphology when chain dynamics are sufficiently slow to prevent defect annealing during solvent exchange. Blends of homopolymer and block copolymer in the feed stream generate more complex internally structured colloids, such as those with hierarchically structured Janus and patchy morphologies, due to additional phase separation and kinetic trapping effects. The ability of the FNP process to generate such a wide range of morphologies using a simple and scalable setup provides a pathway to manufacturing internally structured colloids on an industrial scale.

Transformation of Block Copolymer Nanoparticles from Ellipsoids with Striped Lamellae into Onionlike Spheres and Dynamical Control via Coupled Cahn-Hilliard Equations

Annealing of block copolymers has become a tool of great importance for the reconfiguration of nanoparticles. Here, we present the experimental results of annealing block copolymer nanoparticles and a theoretical model to describe the morphological transformation of ellipsoids with striped lamellae into onionlike spheres. A good correspondence between the experimental findings and predictions of the model was observed. The model based on finding the steepest direction of descent of an appropriate free energy leads to a set of Cahn-Hilliard equations that correctly describe the dynamical transformation of striped ellipsoids into onionlike spheres and reverse onionlike particles, regardless of the nature of the annealing process. This universality makes it possible to describe a variety of experimental conditions involving nanoparticles underlying a heating process. A notable advantage of the proposed approach is that it enables selective control of the interaction between the confined block copolymer and the surrounding medium. This feature endows the model with a great versatility to enable the reproduction of several combined effects of surfactants in diverse conditions, including cases with reverse affinities for the block copolymer segments. A phase diagram to describe a variety of morphologies is presented. We employ the relationship between the temperature-dependent Flory-Huggins parameter and the width of the interfaces to account for changes in temperature due to the heating process. Simulation results correctly show how the transformation evolves as the temperature increases. This increment in temperature corresponds to progressively smaller values of the interfacial width. We anticipate that the proposed approach will facilitate the design and more precise control of experiments involving various kinds of annealing processes.

Synthesis of Polystyrene⁻Polyphenylsiloxane Janus Particles through Colloidal Assembly with Unexpected High Selectivity: Mechanistic Insights and Their Application in the Design of Polystyrene Particles with Multiple Polyphenylsiloxane Patches

Janus particles are of great research interest because of their reduced symmetry, which provides them with unique physical and chemical properties. Such particles can be prepared from spherical structures through colloidal assembly. Whilst colloidal assembly has the potential to be a low cost and scalable process, it typically lacks selectivity. As a consequence, it results in a complex mixture of particles of different architectures, which is tedious to purify. Very recently, we reported the colloidal synthesis of Au semishells, making use of polystyrene⁻polyphenylsiloxane Janus particles as an intermediate product (Chem. Commun. 2017, 53, 3898⁻3901). Here, we demonstrate that these Janus particles are realized through colloidal assembly of spherical glucose-functionalized polystyrene particles and an emulsion of phenyltrimethoxysilane in aqueous ammonia, followed by interfacial polycondensation to form the polyphenylsiloxane patch. Both the polystyrene spheres and the emulsion of Ph-TMS in aqueous ammonia are stabilized by a surfmer-a reactive surfactant. The colloidal assembly reported in this manuscript proceeds with an unexpected high selectivity, which makes this process exceptionally interesting for the synthesis of Janus particles. Furthermore, we report insights into the details of the mechanism of formation of these Janus particles, and apply those to adapt the synthesis conditions to produce polystyrene particles selectively decorated with multiple polyphenylsiloxane patches, e.g., raspberry particles.

Facile Production of Biodegradable Bipolymer Patchy and Patchy Janus Particles with Controlled Morphology by Microfluidic Routes

Patchy and patchy Janus particles composed of poly(dl-lactic acid) (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL) regions were produced with a controlled size, patchiness, composition, and shape anisotropy by microfluidic emulsification and solvent evaporation. Isotropic particles composed of PCL patches embedded in the PLA matrix were produced from relatively small drops with a diameter of 14-25 μm because of the fast solvent extraction as a result of high interfacial area of the particles. Anisotropic patchy Janus particles were formed from large drops, 100-250 μm in diameter. A higher degree of polymer separation was achieved using a higher ratio of dichloromethane to ethyl acetate in the organic phase because of the more pronounced patch coarsening via Ostwald ripening. Janus particles with two fully separated polymer compartments were produced by in situ microfluidic mixing of two separate polymer streams within the formed droplets. The advantage of in situ micromixing is that the particle morphology can be changed continuously in a facile manner during drop generation by manipulating the organic stream flow rates. PCL and PLA domains within the particles were visualized by confocal laser scanning microscopy because of the preferential adsorption of rhodamine 6G dye onto PLA domains and higher binding affinity of Nile red toward PCL.
