Dual role of arsenite in hydrolysis and post-hydrolysis fluorescence sensing of selective pH-dependent probes

In comparison to the sensing activity, the reactivity of arsenite (AsO2-) is less explored. Herein, we focused on AsO2- reactivity studies based on its pKa and compared the study with other common anions. All three pKa values of arsenite are >9.0, affording a flexible working pH range to design a probe for reactivity studies. We designed and synthesized six pH dependent benzothiazole-based Schiff bases, namely, 1-(((6-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)naphthalen-2-ol (1), 5-(diethylamino)-2-(((6-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)phenol (2), 9-(((6-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)-2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H,5H-pyrido[3,2,1-ij]quinolin-8-ol (3), 5-methoxy-2-(((6-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)phenol (4), 4-(((6-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)benzene-1,3-diol (5), and 2-(((6-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)phenol (6), as probes for hydrolysis studies containing 5% water in acetonitrile. In spite of the presence of water in the solution, no hydrolysis was observed for all the probes in the absence of a salt. In the presence of selected sodium salts of various anions in solution, intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) was observed after the deprotonation of an aromatic hydroxy group at the ortho position with respect to the imine groups within the probes. Among the studied anions, selective AsO2- induced imine hydrolysis was observed for probes 1 and 4. In the case of 5 with both o- and p-hydroxy groups, no hydrolysis was observed in the presence of AsO2-. Probe 6 with only the o-hydroxy group showed very fast hydrolysis with poor selectivity. The p-hydroxy group in 4-(((6-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)phenol (7) resulted in poor AsO2- induced hydrolysis. The aldehyde, which was generated after hydrolysis of probe 1, showed selective emission at 450 nm in the presence of AsO2-. The time dependent hydrolysis reaction of probe 1 controls the emission intensity enhancement.

Post-Assembly Polymerization of Discrete Anion-Coordinated Triple Helicate

Hierarchical self-assembly has been recently employed in the construction of anion-coordination-driven gel materials. However, the post-assembly modification strategy, which may be a highly efficient strategy to realize the functionalization of discrete 'aniono' supramolecular architectures, has not been employed yet. Herein we report the first example of anion-coordination-driven gel material cross-linked by well-defined 'aniono' triple helicate through post-assembly polymerization. The obtained gel shows self-healing property and excellent compatibility with various surfaces, including glass, rubber, leaf, PP, and metal. The viscoelastic gel constructed through the post-assembly modification strategy enriches the method to construct the anion-coordination-driven smart materials.

Incorporation of an Anion-Coordinated Triple Helicate into a Thin Film for Choline Recognition in an Aqueous System

Functional thin films, being fabricated by incorporating discrete supramolecular architectures, have potential applications in research areas such as sensing, energy storage, catalysis, and optoelectronics. Here, we have determined that an anion-coordinated triple helicate can be solution-processed into a functional thin film by incorporation into a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrix. The thin films fabricated by the incorporation of the anion-coordinated triple helicate show multiple optical properties, such as fluorescence, CD, and CPL. In addition, the film has the ability to recognize choline and choline derivatives in a water system. The successful recognition of Ch+ by the film represents the first example of utilizing 'aniono'-supramolecular architectures for biomolecule detection in aqueous solution and opens up a new route for designing biocompatible functional materials.

Zn(II)-Dipicolylamine-Attached Amphiphilic Polythiophene for Quantitative Pattern Recognition of Oxyanions in Mixtures

Herein, we propose a novel amphiphilic polythiophene-based chemosensor functionalized with a Zn(II)-dipicolylamine side chain (1poly  ⋅ Zn) for the pattern recognition of oxyanions. Optical changes in amphiphilic 1poly  ⋅ Zn can be induced by the formation of a random coil from a backbone-planarized structure upon the addition of target oxyanions, which results in blueshifts in the UV-vis absorption spectra and turn-on-type fluorescence responses. Dynamic behavior in a polythiophene wire and/or among wires could be a driving force for obtaining visible color changes, while the molecular wire effect is dominant in obtaining fluorescence sensor responses. Notably, the magnitude of optical changes in 1poly  ⋅ Zn has depended on differences in properties of oxyanions, such as their binding affinity, hydrophilicity, and molecular geometry. Thus, various colorimetric and fluorescence response patterns of 1poly  ⋅ Zn to oxyanions were obtained, albeit using a single chemosensor. A constructed information-rich dataset was applied to pattern recognition for the simultaneous group categorization of phosphate and carboxylate groups and the prediction of similar structural oxyanions at a different order of concentrations in their mixture solutions.

Steric Control over the Threading of Pyrophosphonates with One or Two Cyanostar Macrocycles during Pseudorotaxane Formation

The supramolecular recognition of anions is increasingly harnessed to achieve the self-assembly of supramolecular architectures, ranging from cages and polymers to (pseudo)rotaxanes. The cyanostar (CS) macrocycle has previously been shown to form 2 : 1 complexes with organophosphate anions that can be turned into [3]rotaxanes by stoppering. Here we achieved steric control over the assembly of pseudorotaxanes comprising the cyanostar macrocycle and a thread that is based, for the first time, on organo-pyrophosphonates. Subtle differences in steric bulk on the threads allowed formation of either [3]pseudorotaxanes or [2]pseudorotaxanes. We demonstrate that the threading kinetics are governed by the steric demand of the organo-pyrophosphonates and in one case, slows down to the timescale of minutes. Calculations show that the dianions are sterically offset inside the macrocycles. Our findings broaden the scope of cyanostar-anion assemblies and may have relevance for the design of molecular machines whose directionality is a result of relatively slow slipping.

A Tetranuclear Copper(II)/Calcium(II) Complex as Dual Chemosensor for Colorimetric and Fluorescent Detection of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

The tetranuclear Cu²⁺ /Ca²⁺ /Ca2⁺ /Cu²⁺ complex based on Malten ligand has been investigated as a platform for anion binding. Simple organic carboxylates and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been tested, revealing the ability of the platform to bind them. The receiving platform hosts at least two guests in solution although a third anion can be bound, as suggested by X-ray diffraction analysis. The addition of the anions is accompanied by a color change of the solution, making the system a colorimetric sensor for carboxylates (LOD values comprised between 3.6 and 20.7 ppm). A fluorescent system consisting of the 2-(3-oxido-6-oxoxanthen-9-yl)benzoate (fluorescein anion) linked to the tetranuclear platform has been also prepared and used in a chemosensing ensemble approach to signal the presence of the selected anions (Log K between 2.6 and 5.6 for the addition of two guests). The latter also works in a paper strip test, offering the chemosensor a possible practical application.

Anion-Coordination-Driven Assembly: From Discrete Supramolecular Self-Assemblies to Functional Soft Materials

Anion templated assembly of supramolecular systems has been extensively explored in previous reports, whereas anions serve only as an auxiliary and spectator role. With the development of anion coordination chemistry in recent years, anion coordination-driven assembly (ACDA) has emerged as a new strategy for the construction of supramolecular self-assemblies. Anions are proved to exist as the main actors in the construction of supramolecular architectures, i. e., serve as the coordination center. This Review will focus on the recent progress in anion-coordination-driven assembly of discrete supramolecular architectures, such as helicates, polyhedrons and polygons, and the various applications of 'aniono'-systems. At the end of this Review, we highlight current challenges and opportunities for future research of anion-coordination-driven self-assembly.

Three modes of interactions between anions and phenolic macrocycles: a comparative study

Macrocyclic polyphenolic compounds such as resorcin[4]arenes can be considered as multidentate anion receptors. In the current work, we combine new experimental data and reports from the previous literature (solution data and deposited crystal structures from the CCDC) to systematically analyze binding motifs between resorcin[4]arene derivatives and anions, determine the role of supporting interactions from CH donors, ion pairing and estimate their relative strength. We have found that in medium polarity solvents (THF) anion binding is a main driving force for the formation of complexes between resorcinarenes and Alk₄NX salts. Three binding modes have been detected using ¹H NMR and DOSY, depending on the type of additional interactions. Mode I was observed for upper-rim unsubstituted resorcinarenes, which use OH groups and aromatic CH from the upper rim as hydrogen bond donors to form multidentate and multivalent binding sites at the upper rim. Mode II was observed for upper-rim halogenated resorcinarenes (tetrabromo- and tetraiodo-derivatives), which use OH groups and aliphatic CH atoms from the bridges to support the chelation of anions between aromatic units. This binding mode is also multidentate and multivalent, but weaker and more anion-selective than mode I (works effectively for chlorides but not for bromides). For O-substituted derivatives, mode III is observed, with anions bound in a nest formed by aromatic CH atoms in the lower rim (multidentate but monovalent binding). The relative strength of these three binding modes, their solvent-dependence, and emergence in the crystal structures (CCDC) have been evaluated.

Preparation of tricationic tris(pyridylpalladium(II)) metallacyclophane as an anion receptor

A tricationic tris(pyridylpalladium(II)) metallacyclophane was prepared from 3,5-dibromopyridine by a successive treatment with tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(0), diphosphine, and silver salt. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the metallacyclophane incorporated one of three counter anions into its hole-shaped cavity to form multidentate C-H⋯anion interactions. Solution-phase ¹H NMR experiments in DMSO-d₆ indicated that the metallacyclophane exhibited selective binding behavior toward nitrate, tetrafluoroborate, p-toluenesulfonate, perchlorate, and hydrogen sulfate ions, whereas the hexafluoroantimonate ion exhibited only weak interaction toward the metallacyclophane. This anion recognition behavior was further demonstrated by an extraction experiment of water-soluble sulfonate dyes.

Self-assembly of an anion receptor with metal-dependent kinase inhibition and potent in vitro anti-cancer properties

One topical area of supramolecular chemistry is the binding of anionic species but despite the importance of anions in diverse cellular processes and for cancer development, anion receptors or 'binders' have received little attention as potential anti-cancer therapeutics. Here we report self-assembling trimetallic cryptands (e.g. [L₂(Metal)₃]⁶⁺ where Metal = Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺ or Mn²⁺) which can encapsulate a range of anions and which show metal-dependent differences in chemical and biological reactivities. In cell studies, both [L₂Cu₃]⁶⁺ and [L₂Zn₃]⁶⁺ complexes are highly toxic to a range of human cancer cell lines and they show significant metal-dependent selective activity towards cancer cells compared to healthy, non-cancerous cells (by up to 2000-fold). The addition of different anions to the complexes (e.g. PO₄³-, SO₄²- or PhOPO₃²-) further alters activity and selectivity allowing the activity to be modulated via a self-assembly process. The activity is attributed to the ability to either bind or hydrolyse phosphate esters and mechanistic studies show differential and selective inhibition of multiple kinases by both [L₂Cu₃]⁶⁺ and [L₂Zn₃]⁶⁺ complexes but via different mechanisms.

Reaction Monitoring and Structural Characterisation of Coordination Driven Self-Assembled Systems by Ion Mobility-Mass Spectrometry

Nature creates exquisite molecular assemblies, required for the molecular-level functions of life, via self-assembly. Understanding and harnessing these complex processes presents an immense opportunity for the design and fabrication of advanced functional materials. However, the significant industrial potential of self-assembly to fabricate highly functional materials is hampered by a lack of knowledge of critical reaction intermediates, mechanisms, and kinetics. As we move beyond the covalent synthetic regime, into the domain of non-covalent interactions occupied by self-assembly, harnessing and embracing complexity is a must, and non-targeted analyses of dynamic systems are becoming increasingly important. Coordination driven self-assembly is an important subtype of self-assembly that presents several wicked analytical challenges. These challenges are "wicked" due the very complexity desired confounding the analysis of products, intermediates, and pathways, therefore limiting reaction optimisation, tuning, and ultimately, utility. Ion Mobility-Mass Spectrometry solves many of the most challenging analytical problems in separating and analysing the structure of both simple and complex species formed via coordination driven self-assembly. Thus, due to the emerging importance of ion mobility mass spectrometry as an analytical technique tackling complex systems, this review highlights exciting recent applications. These include equilibrium monitoring, structural and dynamic analysis of previously analytically inaccessible complex interlinked structures and the process of self-sorting. The vast and largely untapped potential of ion mobility mass spectrometry to coordination driven self-assembly is yet to be fully realised. Therefore, we also propose where current analytical approaches can be built upon to allow for greater insight into the complexity and structural dynamics involved in self-assembly.

Narcissistic self-sorting in anion-coordination-driven assemblies

Three tris-bis(urea) ligands with triphenylamine-based C₃-symmetric spacers were synthesized, which assembled with sulfate or phosphate to form anionic A₃L₂ pinwheel helices (A = anion and L = ligand) and A₄L₄ tetrahedra, respectively. Interestingly, narcissistic self-sorting was observed in both structures from the mixture of the ligands, wherein each assembly contains only one type of ligand with no detectable mixed-ligand product as confirmed by the NMR and MS studies.

Bambusuril Macrocycles as Mediators of Supramolecular Interactions: Application to the Europium Cage Helicate

Herein, it is shown how bambusurils can be used for tuning and/or characterizing supramolecular systems. Indeed, the addition of bambusurils as anion scavengers to metal-mediated self-assemblies allows manipulation of the subtle equilibria in the given system. This is demonstrated for the case of the tetranuclear europium helical cage, which is well suited to different applications. Among the reported results, experimental evidence is provided showing that perchlorate and triflate anions act as a molecular template for the cage assembly. The complexation of inorganic anions with neutral bambusurils resulted in bulky non-coordinating counterions that may trigger the self-assembly process or stimulate specific interactions between components. Moreover, bambusuril was able to selectively remove coordinating nitrates from the mixture with non-coordinating anions, enabling the regeneration of the helical cage.

Glucose Binding Drives Reconfiguration of a Dynamic Library of Urea-Containing Metal-Organic Assemblies

A bis-urea-functionalized ditopic subcomponent assembled with 2-formylpyridine and Fe^II , resulting in a dynamic library of metal-organic assemblies: an irregular Fe^II ₄ L₆ structure and three Fe^II ₂ L₃ stereoisomers: left- and right-handed helicates and a meso-structure. This library reconfigured in response to the addition of monosaccharide derivatives, which served as guests for specific library members, and the rate of saccharide mutarotation was also enhanced by the library. The (P) enantiomer of the Fe^II ₂ L₃ helical structure bound β-D-glucose selectively over α-D-glucose. As a consequence, the library collapsed into the (P)-Fe^II ₂ L₃ helicate following glucose addition. The α-D-glucose was likewise transformed into the β-D-anomer during equilibration and binding. Thus, β-D-glucose and (P)-3 amplified each other in the product mixture, as metal-organic and saccharide libraries geared together into a single equilibrating system.

Dinuclear helicate or mononuclear pincer lanthanide complexes from one ligand: stereo-controlled assembly and catalysis

By varying the metal/ligand ratio, either dinuclear triple helicate or mononuclear pincer can be stereo-selectively obtained from the same chiral ligand. Their catalytic properties have been demonstrated with the asymmetric FC alkylation reactions.

Dimensional Structures and Electrocatalytic Activities of Platinum(II)-Palladium(II)-Manganese(II) Coordination Polymers Controlled by Chloride versus Bromide

Here we report the synthesis and structural characterization of heterotrimetallic (Pt^II₂Pd^II₂Mn^II₂)_n coordination polymers that show different dimensionalities and electrocatalytic activities depending on chloride and bromide employed in the system. The reaction of the Pt^II₂Pd^II₂ tetranuclear complex [Pd₂Pt₂(NH₃)₄(d-pen)₄] (1), bearing free carboxylate groups, with Mn²⁺ in the presence of chloride produced the (Pt^II₂Pd^II₂Mn^II₂)_n coordination polymer [Mn₂Cl₂(H₂O)₆(1)]Cl₂ (2^Cl), in which the Pt^II₂Pd^II₂ units of 1 are linked by [MnCl(H₂O)₃]⁺ moieties in a 1:2 ratio to form a 2D sheetlike structure. The corresponding reaction in the presence of bromide also gave the (Pt^II₂Pd^II₂Mn^II₂)_n coordination polymer [Mn₂(H₂O)₆(1)]Br₄ (3^Br), but 3^Br adopted a 3D network structure via a 1:1 linkage of the Pt^II₂Pd^II₂ units with [Mn₂(H₂O)₆]⁴⁺ moieties. These complexes showed appreciably different electrocatalytic activities for H₂ evolution.

Double Chalcogen Bonds: Crystal Engineering Stratagems via Diffraction and Multinuclear Solid-State Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Group 16 chalcogens potentially provide Lewis-acidic σ-holes, which are able to form attractive supramolecular interactions with electron rich partners through chalcogen bonds. Here, a multifaceted experimental and computational study of a large series of novel chalcogen-bonded cocrystals, prepared using the principles of crystal engineering, is presented. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that dicyanoselenadiazole and dicyanotelluradiazole derivatives work as promising supramolecular synthons with the ability to form double chalcogen bonds with a wide range of electron donors including halides and oxygen- and nitrogen-containing heterocycles. Extensive ⁷⁷ Se and ¹²⁵ Te solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic investigations of cocrystals establish correlations between the NMR parameters of selenium and tellurium and the local chalcogen bonding geometry. The relationships between the electronic environment of the chalcogen bond and the ⁷⁷ Se and ¹²⁵ Te chemical shift tensors were elucidated through a natural localized molecular orbital density functional theory analysis. This systematic study of chalcogen-bond-based crystal engineering lays the foundations for the preparation of the various multicomponent systems and establishes solid-state NMR protocols to detect these interactions in powdered materials.

Supramolecular Self-Assembly Driven Selective Sensing of Phosphates

A new bis-heteroleptic Ru^II complex (1[PF₆]₂) with iodotriazole as the anion binding group along with the attached pyrene moiety is developed to investigate anion sensing properties and the origin of its selectivity toward a particular class of anions. Selective sensing of phosphates over other anions in both the solution and solid states by 1[PF₆]₂ is clearly evident from the perturbation of the absorption band and a large degree of amplification of ³MLCT emission band in the presence of phosphates. Importantly, macroscopic investigation such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) indicated the formation of supramolecular architecture in the presence of dihydrogen phosphate via halogen bonding interaction and π-π stacking of pyrene moieties. Such macroscopic property is further corroborated by solution and solid state spectroscopic studies, e.g., ¹H-DOSY NMR, single crystal X-ray crystallography, and solid state photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy.

Mechanistically Driven Control over Cubane Oxo Cluster Catalysts

Predictive and mechanistically driven access to polynuclear oxo clusters and related materials remains a grand challenge of inorganic chemistry. We here introduce a novel strategy for synthetic control over highly sought-after transition metal {M₄O₄} cubanes. They attract interest as molecular water oxidation catalysts that combine features of both heterogeneous oxide catalysts and nature's cuboidal {CaMn₄O₅} center of photosystem II. For the first time, we demonstrate the outstanding structure-directing effect of straightforward inorganic counteranions in solution on the self-assembly of oxo clusters. We introduce a selective counteranion toolbox for the controlled assembly of di(2-pyridyl) ketone (dpk) with M(OAc)₂ (M = Co, Ni) precursors into different cubane types. Perchlorate anions provide selective access to type 2 cubanes with the characteristic {H₂O-M₂(OR)₂-OH₂} edge-site, such as [Co₄(dpy-C{OH}O)₄(OAc)₂(H₂O)₂](ClO₄)₂. Type 1 cubanes with separated polar faces [Co₄(dpy-C{OH}O)₄(L2)₄] ⁿ⁺ (L2 = OAc, Cl, or OAc and H₂O) can be tuned with a wide range of other counteranions. The combination of these counteranion sets with Ni(OAc)₂ as precursor selectively produces type 2 Co/Ni-mixed or {Ni₄O₄} cubanes. Systematic mechanistic experiments in combination with computational studies provide strong evidence for type 2 cubane formation through reaction of the key dimeric building block [M₂(dpy-C{OH}O)₂(H₂O)₄]²⁺ with monomers, such as [Co(dpy-C{OH}O)(OAc)(H₂O)₃]. Furthermore, both experiments and DFT calculations support an energetically favorable type 1 cubane formation pathway via direct head-to-head combination of two [Co₂(dpy-C{OH}O)₂(OAc)₂(H₂O)₂] dimers. Finally, the visible-light-driven water oxidation activity of type 1 and 2 cubanes with tuned ligand environments was assessed. We pave the way to efficient design concepts in coordination chemistry through ionic control over cluster assembly pathways. Our comprehensive strategy demonstrates how retrosynthetic analyses can be implemented with readily available assembly directing counteranions to provide rapid access to tuned molecular materials.

Construction and interconversion of anion-coordination-based ('aniono') grids and double helicates modulated by counter-cations

Supramolecular assembly of well-defined discrete architectures has been of great interest due to the tunable properties of these structures in functional materials and bio-mimicking. While metal-coordination-driven assembly has been extensively studied, anion-coordination-driven assembly (ACDA) is just emerging for constructing complex supramolecular structures. Herein two A_2nL_2n (A = anion, L = ligand; n = 1 or 2) ‘aniono’-supramolecular assemblies, i.e. double helicates and the first anion grid, have been constructed based on the coordination between phosphate (PO₄^3–) anion and a bis–tris(urea) ligand. Moreover, the aniono-grid and double helicate motifs can be readily interconverted under ambient conditions by simply changing the counter-cation. These results redefine the power and scope of ACDA, which may represent a new approach in the assembly of well-defined architectures in parallel with the metal coordination-driven assembly of metallo-supramolecules.

1,8-Diamidocarbazoles: an easily tuneable family of fluorescent anion sensors and transporters

The synthesis, structure and anion recognition properties of an extensive, rationally designed series of bisamide derivatives of 1,8-diaminocarbazole and 1,8-diamino-3,6-dichlorocarbazole are described. Despite simple structures and the presence of only three hydrogen bond donors, such compounds are remarkably strong and selective receptors for oxyanions in DMSO + 0.5%H2O. Owing to their carbazole fluorophore, they are also sensitive turn-on fluorescent sensors for H2PO4- and AcO-, with a more than 15-fold increase in fluorescence intensity upon binding. Despite relatively weak chloride affinity, some of the diamidocarbazoles have also been shown, for the first time, to be very active chloride transporters through lipid bilayers. The binding, sensing and transport properties of these receptors can be easily modulated by the usually overlooked variations in the length and degree of branching of their alkyl side arms. Overall, this study demonstrates that the 1,8-diamidocarbazole binding unit is a very promising and synthetically versatile platform for the development of fluorescent sensors and transporters for anions.
