Alkoxylated Fluoranthene-Fused [3.3.3]Propellanes: Facile Film Formation against High π-Core Content

Solid-state assembling modes are as crucial as the chemical structures of single molecules for real applications. In this work, solid-state structures and phase-transition temperatures are investigated for a series of fluoranthene-fused [3.3.3]propellanes consisting of a rigid three-dimensional (3D) π-core and varying lengths of alkoxy groups. Compounds in this series with n-butoxy or longer alkoxy groups take an amorphous state at room temperature. In these molecules, rotatable biaryl-type bonds are not incorporated and high D3h molecular symmetry is retained. Therefore, π-fused [3.3.3]propellanes present a unique platform for amorphous molecular materials with low ratios of flexible alkoxy atoms to rigid π-core ones.

Long-Wavelength Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells: Materials and Device Engineering

Long-wavelength light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) are potential deep-red and near infrared light sources with solution-processable simple device architecture, low-voltage operation, and compatibility with inert metal electrodes. Many scientific efforts have been made to material design and device engineering of the long-wavelength LECs over the past two decades. The materials designed the for long-wavelength LECs cover ionic transition metal complexes, small molecules, conjugated polymers, and perovskites. On the other hand, device engineering techniques, including spectral modification by adjusting microcavity effect, light outcoupling enhancement, energy down-conversion from color conversion layers, and adjusting intermolecular interactions, are also helpful in improving the device performance of long-wavelength LECs. In this review, recent advances in the long-wavelength LECs are reviewed from the viewpoints of materials and device engineering. Finally, discussions on conclusion and outlook indicate possible directions for future developments of the long-wavelength LECs. This review would like to pave the way for the researchers to design materials and device engineering techniques for the long-wavelength LECs in the applications of displays, bio-imaging, telecommunication, and night-vision displays.

Glassy Porphyrin/C60 Composites: Morphological Engineering of C60 Fullerene with Liquefied Porphyrins

Morphological control of C₆₀ fullerene using liquefied porphyrins (1 and 2) as the host matrices was explored. Slow evaporation of the solvent of the equimolar mixture of porphyrin and C₆₀ in toluene afforded the porphyrin/C₆₀ composite with a 3:1 molar ratio. The stoichiometric binding behaviors suggest that specific porphyrin-C₆₀ interactions operate the formation of the porphyrin/C₆₀ composites, as corroborated by spectroscopic and thermal properties, and glazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray diffraction. Under the bulk conditions, the conventional thermodynamic advantage of multiple binding cooperativity for molecular recognition is unlikely to explain the stoichiometric binding behaviors. Instead, we propose a size-matching effect on the porphyrin-C₆₀ interaction in the bulk porphyrin matrices, i.e., "supramolecular solvation". The glassy nature of the porphyrin matrices was transmitted to C₆₀ through the specific interaction, and the porphyrin/C₆₀ composites adopted glassy states at room temperature.

Fully Conjugated Porphyrin Glass: Collective Light-Harvesting Antenna for Near-Infrared Fluorescence beyond 1 μm

Expanded π-systems with a narrow highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital band gap encounter deactivation of excitons due to the "energy gap law" and undesired aggregation. This dilemma generally thwarts the near-infrared (NIR) luminescence of organic π-systems. A sophisticated cofacially stacked π-system is known to involve exponentially tailed disorder, which displays exceptionally red-shifted fluorescence even as only a marginal emission component. Enhancement of the tail-state fluorescence might be advantageous to achieve NIR photoluminescence with an expected collective light-harvesting antenna effect as follows: (i) efficient light-harvesting capacity due to intense electronic absorption, (ii) a long-distance exciton migration into the tail state based on a high spatial density of the chromophore site, and (iii) substantial transmission of NIR emission to circumvent the inner filter effect. Suppression of aggregation-induced quenching of fluorescence could realize collective light-harvesting antenna for NIR-luminescence materials. This study discloses an enhanced tail-state NIR fluorescence of a self-standing porphyrin film at 1138 nm with a moderate quantum efficiency based on a fully π-conjugated porphyrin that adopts an amorphous form, called "porphyrin glass".

Preparation of Ruthenium Dithiolene Complex/Polysiloxane Films and Their Responses to CO Gas

To develop advanced materials using metal complexes, it is better to prepare metal complexes contained in composite or hybrid films. To achieve this purpose, we synthesized ruthenium complexes with dihalogen-substituted benzendithiolate ligands, [(η⁶-C₆Me₆)Ru(S₂C₆H₂X₂)] (X = F, 3,6-Cl, Br, 4,5-Cl), 1b-1e. We also investigated preparation of 1c or 1e containing polysiloxane composite films and their reactivity to CO gas. All ruthenium complexes 1b-1e reacted with CO gas, and carbonyl ligand adducts 2b-2e were generated. Ruthenium complexes 1b-1e show two strong absorption peaks around 550 and 420 nm. After exposure to CO gas, these absorption peaks were immediately decreased without a peak shift. A similar trend was observed in 1c or 1e containing polysiloxane composite films. These results indicate that 1c and 1e were easily converted into 2c and 2e, both in the solution and the polysiloxane film during CO gas exposure.

A metal-lustrous porphyrin foil

A metal-lustrous self-standing film, named "porphyrin foil", was formed from a glass-forming polymeric porphyrin. The amorphous glass nature of the porphyrin foil played a key role in spontaneously producing a smooth surface. Its sharp contrast in intense absorption and specular reflection of light at each wavelength provided a brilliant metallic lustre.
