Enhancing Flame-Retardant Properties of Polyurethane Aerogels Doped with Silica-Based Particles

In this work, polyurethane (PUR) aerogels doped with different SiO2 particles, derived from a renewable source, were successfully synthesized, and the effects of SiO2 content on the properties of PUR aerogels were investigated. Specifically, three types of SiO2-based particles obtained from rice husk through different procedures were evaluated to enhance the thermal stability of the composites with special attention given to flame-retardant properties. With the optimal SiO2 particles, obtained through acid digestion, the influence of their content between 0.5 and 3 wt.% on the physicochemical characteristics of the synthesized aerogels was thoroughly examined. The results showed that increasing the doping agent content improved the lightness, thermal stability, and flame-retardant properties of the resulting PUR aerogels, with the best performance observed at a 2 wt.% doping level. The doped aerogel samples with non-modified SiO2 particles significantly enhanced the fire safety performance of the material, exhibiting up to an eightfold increase in flame retardancy. However, modification of the SiO2 particles with phytic acid did not slow down the combustion velocity when filling the aerogels. This research highlights the promising potential of doped PUR/SiO2 aerogels in advancing materials science and engineering applications for withstanding high temperatures and improving fire safety.

Antibiofilm activity of mesoporous silica nanoparticles against the biofilm associated infections

In pharmaceutical industries, various chemical carriers are present which are used for drug delivery to the correct target sites. The most popular and upcoming drug delivery carriers are mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN). The main reason for its popularity is its ability to be specific and optimize the drug delivery process in a controlled manner. Nowadays, MSNs are widely used to eradicate various microbial infections, especially the ones related to biofilms. Biofilms are sessile groups of cells that live by forming a consortium and exhibit antibacterial resistance (AMR). They exhibit AMR by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and various quorum sensing (QS) signaling molecules. Usually, bacterial and fungal cells are capable of forming biofilms. These biofilms are pathogenic. In the majority of the cases, biofilms cause nosocomial diseases. This review will focus on the antibiofilm activities of MSN, its mechanism of target-specific drug delivery, and its ability to disrupt the bacterial biofilms inhibiting the infection. The review will also discuss various mechanisms for the delivery of pharmaceutical molecules by the MSNs to inhibit the bacterial biofilms, and lastly, we will talk about the different types of MSNs and their antibiofilm activities.

Elastic and Self-Healing Copolymer Coatings with Antimicrobial Function

The revolutionary self-healing function for long-term and safe service processes has inspired researchers to implement them in various fields, including in the application of antimicrobial protective coatings. Despite the great advances that have been made in the field of fabricating self-healing and antimicrobial polymers, their poor transparency and the trade-off between the mechanical and self-healing properties limit the utility of the materials as transparent antimicrobial protective coatings for wearable optical and display devices. Considering the compatibility in the blending process, our group proposed a self-healing, self-cross-linkable poly{(n-butyl acrylate)-co-[N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide]} copolymer (AP)-based protective coating combined with two types of commercial cationic antimicrobial agents (i.e., dimethyl octadecyl (3-trimethoxysilylpropyl) ammonium chloride (DTSACL) and chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG)), leading to the fabrication of a multifunctional modified compound film of (AP/b%CHG)-grafted-a%DTSACL. The first highlight of this research is that the reactivity of the hydroxyl group in the N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide of the copolymer side chains under thermal conditions facilitates the "grafting to" process with the trimethoxysilane groups of DTSACL to form AP-grafted-DTSACL, yielding favorable thermal stability, improvement in hydrophobicity, and enhancement of mechanical strength. Second, we highlight that the addition of CHG can generate covalent and noncovalent interactions in a complex manner between the two biguanide groups of CHG with the AP and DTSACL via a thermal-triggered cross-linking reaction. The noncovalent interactions synergistically serve as diverse dynamic hydrogen bonds, leading to complete healing upon scratches and even showing over 80% self-healing efficiency on full-cut, while covalent bonding can effectively improve elasticity and mechanical strength. The soft nature of CHG also takes part in improving the self-healing of the copolymer. Moreover, it was discovered that the addition of CHG can enhance antimicrobial effectiveness, as demonstrated by the long-term superior antibacterial activity (100%) against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria and the antifouling function on a glass substrate and/or a silica wafer coated by the modified polymer.

Efficiency of Neat and Quaternized-Cellulose Nanofibril Fillers in Chitosan Membranes for Direct Ethanol Fuel Cells

In this work, fully polysaccharide based membranes were presented as self-standing, solid polyelectrolytes for application in anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). For this purpose, cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were modified successfully with an organosilane reagent, resulting in quaternized CNFs (CNF (D)), as shown by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Carbon-13 (C13) nuclear magnetic resonance (¹³C NMR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)/Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and ζ-potential measurements. Both the neat (CNF) and CNF(D) particles were incorporated in situ into the chitosan (CS) membrane during the solvent casting process, resulting in composite membranes that were studied extensively for morphology, potassium hydroxide (KOH) uptake and swelling ratio, ethanol (EtOH) permeability, mechanical properties, ionic conductivity, and cell performance. The results showed higher Young's modulus (119%), tensile strength (91%), ion exchange capacity (177%), and ionic conductivity (33%) of the CS-based membranes compared to the commercial Fumatech membrane. The addition of CNF filler improved the thermal stability of the CS membranes and reduced the overall mass loss. The CNF (D) filler provided the lowest (4.23 × 10^-5 cm² s^-1) EtOH permeability of the respective membrane, which is in the same range as that of the commercial membrane (3.47 × 10^-5 cm²s^-1). The most significant improvement (~78%) in power density at 80 °C was observed for the CS membrane with neat CNF compared to the commercial Fumatech membrane (62.4 mW cm^-2 vs. 35.1 mW cm^-2). Fuel cell tests showed that all CS-based anion exchange membranes (AEMs) exhibited higher maximum power densities than the commercial AEMs at 25 °C and 60 °C with humidified or non-humidified oxygen, demonstrating their potential for low-temperature direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) applications.

Nanoparticle and bioparticle deposition kinetics

Mechanisms and kinetic of particle deposition at solid surfaces leading to the formation of self-assembled layers of controlled structure and density were reviewed. In the first part theoretical aspects were briefly discussed, comprising limiting analytical solutions for the linear transport under flow and diffusion. Methods of the deposition kinetics analysis for non-linear regimes affected by surface blocking were also considered. Characteristic monolayer formation times under diffusion and flow for the nanoparticle size range were calculated. In the second part illustrative experimental results obtained for micro- and nanoparticles were discussed. Deposition at planar substrates was analyzed with emphasis focused on the stability of layers and the release kinetics of silver particles. Applicability of the quartz microbalance measurements (QCM) for quantitative studies of nanoparticle deposition kinetic was also discussed. Except for noble metal and polymer particles, representative results for virus deposition at abiotic surfaces were analyzed. Final part of the review was devoted to nanoparticle corona formation at polymer carrier particles investigated by combination of the concentration depletion, AFM, SEM and the in situ electrokinetic method. It is argued that the results obtained for colloid particles can be used as reliable reference systems for interpretation of protein and other bioparticle deposition, confirming the thesis that simple is universal.

Nanocapsules with excellent biocompatibility and stability in protein solutions

Silica nanocapsules (SiO₂NCs) are usually prepared with cationic surfactants that are not cytocompatible. Dialysis can be used to remove surfactants but leads to instability of the SiO₂NCs when they are in the presence of proteins or biological media. Herein, SiO₂NCs stabilized with a reactive surfactant are synthesized to prevent leaching upon dialysis. The SiO₂NCs show superior stability and biocompatibility compared with SiO₂NCs prepared with conventional surfactants. The SiO₂NCs can be used in self-healing materials, smart agriculture and biomedical applications.

Recent Advances Toward the Use of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for the Treatment of Bacterial Infections

It is a fact that the use of antibiotics is inducing a growing resistance on bacteria. This situation is not only the consequence of a drugs’ misuse, but a direct consequence of a widespread and continuous use. Current studies suggest that this effect could be reversed by using abandoned antibiotics to which bacteria have lost their resistance, but this is only a temporary solution that in near future would lead to new resistance problems. Fortunately, current nanotechnology offers a new life for old and new antibiotics, which could have significantly different pharmacokinetics when properly delivered; enabling new routes able to bypass acquired resistances. In this contribution, we will focus on the use of porous silica nanoparticles as functional carriers for the delivery of antibiotics and biocides in combination with additional features like membrane sensitizing and heavy metal-driven metabolic-disrupting therapies as two of the most interesting combination therapies.

Air-ozonolysis activation of polyolefins versus use of laden finishing to form contact-active nonwoven materials

Two synthetic approaches were explored for modification of the polyolefins polyethylene/polypropylene (PE/PP) to form contact-active nonwoven materials. In the first approach, polymer surfaces were activated by O2-free air-ozonolysis, and then the active agent (trimethoxysilyl) propyl-octadecyl-dimethyl-ammonium chloride (C18-TSA) was covalently bound. In the second approach, the active agent was directly conjugated to the commercial 'finishing' that was then applied to the polymer. The chemical, physical and microscopic properties of the modified polymers were comprehensively studied, and their active site density was quantified by fluorescein sodium salt-cetyltrimethylammonium chloride reaction. The antimicrobial activity of the prepared nonwovens against Bacillus subtilis (Gram-positive) and Salmonella enterica (Gram-negative), and their stability at various pHs and temperatures were examined. The two approaches conferred antimicrobial properties to the modified polymers and demonstrated stable linkage of C18-TSA. However, the performance of the nonwovens formed by the first approach was superior. The study suggests two feasible and safe pathways for the modification of polyolefins to form contact-active nonwoven materials that can be further applied in various fields, such as hygiene products, medical fabrics, sanitizing wipes, and more.

Effective Antibacterial Glass Fiber Membrane Prepared by Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Grafting

This paper reports a novel glass fiber membrane with an effective antibacterial performance by chemical grafting of quaternary ammonium salt (QAS) which is enhanced by a plasma bombardment technique. Plasma bombardment as a pretreatment of the membrane can increase the QAS anchored on the membrane from 0.8 to 1.3 wt %. The chemical grafting technique can increase the membrane zeta potential from negative values to positive values in aqueous solutions at various pHs. Furthermore, the plasma-enhanced chemical-grafting membrane has more positive zeta potentials (49.0 mV at pH = 7) than the chemical-grafting membrane without the plasma bombardment technique (38.9 mV at pH = 7). In the antibacterial performance evaluation, the Escherichia coli survival rate decreased from 127.0% of the pristine membrane to 4.1 and 11.3% of the plasma-enhanced chemical-grafting membrane and the chemical-grafting membrane, respectively. In addition, the plasma-enhanced chemical-grafting membrane shows durable antibacterial activity against E. coli with copious water rinsing as much as 3 L·cm-2.

A cellulose acetate/Amygdalus pedunculata shell-derived activated carbon composite monolith for phenol adsorption

Amygdalus pedunculata is expected to be a good candidate plant for desert reclamation (“greening”) since it has notable tolerance to cold and drought and can grow in a wide range of areas with different soil types and moisture contents. In this study, we have developed a single-step method to fabricate a cellulose acetate (CA)/A. pedunculata shell (APS)-derived activated carbon (AC) composite monolith by thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) for removal of toxic phenol from aqueous solution. The composite monolith was easily fabricated by TIPS of a CA solution in the presence of the dispersed AC, in which AC was well loaded onto the monolithic skeleton of CA. The as-obtained monolith showed a maximum adsorption capacity of 45 mg g⁻¹ at the initial phenol concentration of 0.8 mg mL⁻¹. The present composite can be prepared with an arbitrary shape by a facile method from cheap materials, and is more convenient to recycle than powder adsorbents. Therefore, the present CA/APS-derived AC composite monolith has great potential as a promising adsorbent of low cost with convenient separation for toxic phenol-containing wastewater.
