Abstract
Poly(methyl methacrylate-vinyl imidazole bromide) (poly-MMA-IL)-grafted magnetic nanoparticles were successfully developed and applied in the micro-magnetic solid phase extraction (μ-MSPE) for 16 types of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from tea, fried food, and grilled food samples via gas chromatography flame ionization detector (GC-FID). One variable at a time (OVAT) and response surface methodology (RSM) were used for efficient optimization. The validation method showed a good coefficient of determination (R2) ranging from 0.9901 to 0.9982 (n = 3) with linearity of 0.2 μg L-1-500 μg L-1. Detection and quantification limits were 0.06 µg L-1-0.32 µg L-1 and 0.18 µg L-1-0.97 µg L-1. Additionally, satisfactory reproducibility was attained with intra-day and inter-day precisions having RSD ranges of 3.6%-11.1%. The spiked recovery value of 16 PAHs in fried food, grilled food and tea samples obtained from the night market in Malaysia ranged from 80%-12%, respectively.

Abstract
In this study, we evaluate the efficiency of two novel nanostructured adsorbents - chitosan-graphitic carbon nitride@magnetite (CS-g-CN@Fe3O4) and graphitic carbon nitride@copper/zinc nanocomposite (g-CN@Cu/Zn NC) - for the rapid removal of methylparaben (MPB) from water. Our characterization methods, aimed at understanding the adsorbents' structures and surface areas, informed our systematic examination of influential parameters including sonication time, adsorbent dosage, initial MPB concentration, and temperature. We applied advanced modeling techniques, such as response surface methodology (RSM), generalized regression neural network (GRNN), and radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), to evaluate the adsorption process. The adsorbents proved highly effective, achieving maximum adsorption capacities of 255 mg g-1 for CS-g-CN@Fe3O4 and 218 mg g-1 for g-CN@Cu/Zn NC. Through genetic algorithm (GA) optimization, we identified the optimal conditions for the highest MPB removal efficiency: a sonication period of 12.00 min and an adsorbent dose of 0.010 g for CS-g-CN@Fe3O4 NC, with an MPB concentration of 17.20 mg L-1 at 42.85 °C; and a sonication time of 10.25 min and a 0.011 g dose for g-CN@Cu/Zn NC, with an MPB concentration of 13.45 mg L-1 at 36.50 °C. The predictive accuracy of the RBFNN and GRNN models was confirmed to be satisfactory. Our findings demonstrate the significant capabilities of these synthesized adsorbents in effectively removing MPB from water, paving the way for optimized applications in water purification.

Abstract
Efficient magnetic solid phase extraction using crystalline porous polymers can find important applications in food safety. Herein, the core-shell Fe3O4@COFs nanospheres were synthesized by one-pot method and characterized in detail. The porous COF shell with large surface area had fast and selective adsorption for propylparaben via π-π, hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. The extraction and desorption parameters were evaluated in detail. Under the optimized conditions, the extraction equilibrium was reached only in 5 min, the maximum adsorption capacity for propylparaben was 500 mg g-1 and the proposed Fe3O4@DhaTab-based-MSPE-HPLC-UV method afforded good linearity (4-20000 μg mL-1) with R2 (0.997), low limits of detection (0.55 μg L-1) and limits of quantification (1.5 μg L-1). Furthermore, the developed method was applied to determine propylparaben in soft drinks with the recoveries (97.0-98.3%) and relative standard deviations (0.61 to 3.75%). These results revealed the potential of Fe3O4@DhaTab as efficient adsorbents for parabens in food samples.

Abstract
Covalent organic framework (COF)-decorated magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@DhaTab) with core-shell structure have been synthesized by one-pot method. The prepared Fe3O4@DhaTab was well characterized, and parameters of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) for parabens were also investigated in detail. Under optimized conditions, the adsorbent dosage was only 3 mg and extraction time was 10 min. The developed Fe3O4@DhaTab-based MSPE-HPLC analysis method offered good linearity (0.01-20 μg mL-1) with R2 (0.999) and low limits of detection (3.3-6.5 μg L-1) using UV detector at 254 nm. The proposed method was applied to determine four parabens in environmental water samples with recoveries in the range 64.0-105% and relative standard deviations of 0.16-7.8%. The adsorption mechanism was explored and indicated that porous DhaTab shell provided π-π, hydrophobic, and hydrogen bonding interactions in the MSPE process. The results revealed the potential of magnetic-functionalized COFs in determination of environmental contaminants.

Abstract
We developed a new hybrid material resulting from an innovative supramolecular tripartite association between an ionic liquid covalently immobilized on primary β-cyclodextrins rim and an anionic water-soluble polymer. Two hydrophilic ternary complexes based on native and permethylated β-cyclodextrins substituted with an ionic liquid and immobilized on poly(styrene sulfonate) (CD-IL+PSS- and CD(OMe)IL+PSS-) were obtained by simple dialysis with a cyclodextrin maximal grafting rate of 25% and 20% on the polymer, respectively. These polyelectrolytes are based on electrostatic interactions between the opposite charges of the imidazolium cation of the ionic liquid and the poly(styrene sulfonate) anion. The inclusion properties of the free cavities of the cyclodextrins and the synergic effect of the polymeric matrix were studied with three reference guests such as phenolphthalein, p-nitrophenol, and 2-anilinonaphthalene-6-sulfonic acid using UV-visible, fluorescent, and NMR spectroscopies. The support has been applied successfully in dialysis device to extract and concentrated aromatic model molecule. This simple and flexible synthetic strategy opens the way to new hybrid materials useful for fast and low-cost ecofriendly extraction techniques relevant for green analytical chemistry.

Abstract
A huge number of parabens, esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, are used in cosmetic and personal care products as preservative substances. Due to their detrimental effects on ecosystem and human health, taking precautionary measures to remove these compounds is an important task regarding the environmental issues. In this study, a silica (SiO2) nanotube has been selected as a novel sensor to adsorb the most common parabens which are methyl paraben and propyl paraben molecules. To this aim, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to evaluate the properties for investigated compounds. The calculated adsorption energies of the most stable configurations for methyl parban@SiO2 and propyl paraben@SiO2 complexes were found to be –0.238 and –0.242 eV, respectively. The electronic properties of nanotubes experienced dramatic changes in case of interactions with parabens, which led to declining the HOMO/LUMO energy gap of the nanotube to its original value. Such adsorption could also enhance the electrical conductivity of the nanotubes meaning that the utilized SiO2 nanotube could detect the existence of methyl and propyl parabens molecules in the environment. As a concluding remark, the investigated SiO2 nanotube could work as a possible sensor for hazardous paraben with the importance of environmental issues.

Abstract
Female reproduction is precisely regulated by hormones, and the ovary is easily affected by environmental endocrine disruptors (EDCs), which are ubiquitous in industrialized societies. Parabens are EDCs that are used as antibacterial preservatives in cosmetics, personal care products (PCPs), medicines, and food. We used ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to quantitatively detect methyl-, ethyl-, butyl-, and propylparaben (PP) concentrations in urine samples from 74 women of childbearing age. Balb/c mice were subcutaneously injected with 100 mg/kg/day of PP for 21 consecutive days or 100 or 1,000 mg/kg/day of PP during superovulation. Various concentrations of PP (ranging from 1 to 1,000 nM) were added to a human ovarian granulosa tumor-derived cell line (KGN) culture for 24 h. The urinary paraben concentrations of women who used cosmetics and other PCPs within 48 h prior to sample collection were significantly elevated, and the PP concentration was significantly positively correlated with the basal estradiol concentration. After PP injection, the mouse serum estradiol concentrations were significantly increased, estrus cycles were disordered, corpus luteum number was reduced, and number of oocytes retrieved was significantly reduced. In in vitro experiments, PP treatment increased estradiol synthesis and the expression levels of aromatase enzyme (CYP19A1) and steroidogenic acute regulatory protein. This study demonstrates the adverse effects of PP on ovarian estradiol secretion and ovulation, further evaluates the safety of PP as a preservative, and provides guidance for the use of PCPs and cosmetics by women of childbearing age.

Abstract
Parahydroxybenzoates (parabens) are considered as emerging environmental contaminants because of their extensive usage in our daily life products, causing parabens contamination into environmental water systems and lead to toxic effects on environmental health. This study describes a greener extraction method using a new cationic polymer poly (ethyleneimine) functionalized acid-treated carbon nanofibers (PEI-CNFs) coated cellulose paper (CP) as solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent material for the extraction of parabens from environmental water samples. The fabrication of PEI-CNFs modified CP was confirmed using field-emission scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, and fourier-transformer infrared spectroscopy techniques. Various factors affecting the adsorption and desorption of parabens on PEI-CNFs@CP and its extraction efficiencies were studied using HPLC-UV analysis. Under the optimal experimental conditions, maximum extraction efficiencies were achieved for four target parabens, and PEI-CNFs@CP/HPLC-UV method exhibited excellent linearities ranged from 0.5-50 ng mL-1 with regression coefficient values were between 0.9952-0.9970. The presented method showed good sensitivity with quantification limits between 0.5-0.75 ng mL-1 and detection limits between 0.1-0.25 ng mL-1. The developed technique was applied for the real sample analysis (river, lake, domestic sewage water, and drinking tap water). The spiked recovery revealed good recoveries between 86.8-116.0% with RSD less than 8.8% for all the water samples. These results proved that it a simple, fast, efficient, low-cost, and eco-friendly method for the extraction and determination of parabens in environmental water samples and can be applied as a routine analytical tool in environmental monitoring and quality control laboratories.

Phenol's structure has closely bonded phenyl and hydroxy groups, thereby making its functional characteristics closely similar to that of alcohol. As a result, phenol is used as a base compound for commercial home-based products. Hence, a simple and efficient procedure is required to determine the low concentration of phenols in environmental water samples. In this research, a method of combining magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with surfactant Sylgard 309 was developed to overcome the drawbacks in the classical extraction methods. In addition, this developed method improved the performance of extraction when MNPs and the surfactant Sylgard 309 were used separately, as reported in the previous research. This MNP-Sylgard 309 was synthesised by the coprecipitation method and attracts phenolic compounds in environmental water samples. Response surface methodology was used to study the parameters and responses in order to obtain an optimised condition using MNP-Sylgard 309. The parameters included the effect of pH, extraction time, and concentration of the analyte. Meanwhile, the responses measured were the peak area of the chromatogram and the percentage recovery. From this study, the results of the optimum conditions for extraction using MNP-Sylgard 309 were pH 7, extraction time of 20 min, and analyte concentration of 10.0 μg mL-1. Under the optimized conditions, MNP-Sylgard 309 showed a low limit of detection of 0.665 μg mL-1 and the limit of quantification was about 2.219 μg mL-1. MNP-Sylgard 309 was successfully applied on environmental water samples such as lake and river water. High recovery (76.23%-110.23%) was obtained.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The alkyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid at the C-4 position, "the parabens," including methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl, are widely used as antimicrobial preservatives in foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Official regulations on the use of these compounds make their analysis essential for the estimation of their exposure. METHODS On this basis, the presented study was realized to develop a simple, selective and cheap high-performance liquid chromatographic method for the quantitative determination of methylparaben, ethylparaben (EP), n-propyl paraben (NPP), isopropyl paraben (IPP), n-butyl paraben (NBP), isobutyl paraben (IBP) and benzyl paraben (BP) in pharmaceuticals and cosmetic products. RESULTS The chromatographic separation of the analytes was achieved under flow rate gradient elution conditions using a C18-bonded core-shell silica particle column (2.6 μm particle size, 150 × 3.0 mm from Phenomenex Co.). The samples were injected into the system as aliquots of 1.0 μL, and the compounds were detected by using a photodiode array detector set at 254 nm wavelength. With this technique, seven paraben derivatives can be determined in the concentration range of 250-2000 ng/mL. The recovery of the method is in the range of 99.95-13.84%, and the RSD is at a maximum value of 3.95%. CONCLUSION The proposed method was fully validated and successfully applied to different pharmaceutical and cosmetic samples (n=16), including syrups, suspensions, oral sprays, gels, etc. At least one paraben derivative was detected in six samples and was determined quantitatively. The maximum amount of a paraben derivative found in the analyzed samples was 321.7 ng/mL, which was MP. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first LC method, which is applicable both on pharmaceutical and cosmetic samples.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are a group of non-conventional salts with melting points below 100 °C. Apart from their negligible vapor pressure at room temperature, high thermal stability, and impressive solvation properties, ILs are characterized by their tunability. Given such nearly infinite combinations of cations and anions, and the easy modification of their structures, ILs with specific properties can be synthesized. These characteristics have attracted attention regarding their use as extraction phases in analytical sample preparation methods, particularly in liquid-phase extraction methods. Given the liquid nature of most common ILs, their incorporation in analytical sample preparation methods using solid sorbents requires the preparation of solid derivatives, such as polymeric ILs, or the combination of ILs with other materials to prepare solid IL-based composites. In this sense, many solid composites based on ILs have been prepared with improved features, including magnetic particles, carbonaceous materials, polymers, silica materials, and metal-organic frameworks, as additional materials forming the composites. This review aims to give an overview on the preparation and applications of IL-based composites in analytical sample preparation in the period 2017–2020, paying attention to the role of the IL material in those composites to understand the effect of the individual components in the sorbent.

Abstract
The high consumer demand for cosmetic products has caused the authorities and the industry to require rigorous analytical controls to assure their safety and efficacy. Thus, the determination of prohibited compounds that could be present at trace level due to unintended causes is increasingly important. Furthermore, some cosmetic ingredients can be percutaneously absorbed, further metabolized and eventually excreted or bioaccumulated. Either the parent compound and/or their metabolites can cause adverse health effects even at trace level. Moreover, due to the increasing use of cosmetics, some of their ingredients have reached the environment, where they are accumulated causing harmful effects in the flora and fauna at trace levels. To this regard, the development of sensitive analytical methods to determine these cosmetic-related compounds either for cosmetic control, for percutaneous absorption studies or for environmental surveillance monitoring is of high interest. In this sense, (micro)extraction techniques based on nanomaterials as extraction phase have attracted attention during the last years, since they allow to reach the desired selectivity. The aim of this review is to provide a compilation of those nanomaterial-based (micro)extraction techniques for the determination of cosmetic-related compounds in cosmetic, biological and/or environmental samples spanning from the first attempt in 2010 to the present.

Abstract
In this work, a novel, rapid, and simple analytical method was proposed for the detection of parabens in milk sample by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. At the same time, milk sample was pretreated by magnetic solid phase extraction, which detected up to five parabens. A series of important parameters of magnetic solid phase extraction were investigated and optimized, such as pH value of loading buffer, amount of material, adsorption time, ionic strength, eluting solvents, and eluting time. Under the optimized conditions, the corresponding values were more than 0.9991, limits of detection and the limit of quantification were 0.1 and 0.5 ng/mL, respectively. In addition, the recoveries were achieved in range of 95-105%, the liner range were within 0.1-600 ng/mL, and the relative standard deviations were even lower than 5%.

Abstract
In this study, activated carbon (AC) coated with a green silicone surfactant (SS) was further incorporated with magnetite particles (Fe3O4) via a co-precipitation method to enhance the separation of the newly designed magnetic AC–SS (Fe3O4@AC–SS) in a magnetic field. The properties of this magnetic adsorbent were characterized via Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The adsorption characteristics of the Fe3O4@AC–SS adsorbent were examined using 2,4-nitrophenol and 2,4-dichlorophenol as adsorbates. Experiments were performed to investigate the adsorption kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics as well as the effects of adsorption dosage and solution pH on the removal of both analytes. The kinetic data were well-fitted by the pseudo-second order model and the Freundlich model best described the adsorption isotherm for both analytes. The maximum adsorption capabilities for 2,4-dinitrophenol and 2,4-dichlorophenol reached 43 and 98 mg g−1, respectively. The analysis was further validated using real industrial effluent, and a removal efficiency of 62.2–98.1% and relative standard deviation value less than 7.2% were attained for both analytes. Thus, the multifunctional adsorbent has potential to function as an adsorbent for the fast, convenient, economical and highly efficient removal of pollutants from wastewater, which is significant for the purification of natural water and industrial effluent. In this study, activated carbon (AC) coated with a green silicone surfactant (SS) was further incorporated with magnetite particles (Fe3O4) to enhance the separation of the newly designed magnetic AC–SS (Fe3O4@AC–SS) in a magnetic field.![]()

Abstract
This study investigated the effectiveness of ionic liquids (ILs) loaded onto the surface of a polymeric adsorbent (βCD-TDI) grafted with modified magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) via an analysis of water treatment, which resulted in high removal of selected endocrine-disrupting chemicals (parabens). The syntheses of MNPs, MNP-βCD-TDI, and IL-MNP-βCD-TDI were characterised and compared using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, carbon-hydrogen-nitrogen (CHN) analysis, vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results of SEM and TEM indicated that the pore size distribution exhibited mesoporous characteristics with a small surface area (BET analysis: 42.95 m2 g-1). Furthermore, a preliminary sorption experiment demonstrated the ability of IL-MNP-βCD-TDI to enhance not only the sorption capacity, but also the removal of propyl paraben (PP), butyl paraben (BP), and benzyl paraben (ArP). The adsorption process appeared to be pH-dependent, and hence the optimum pH of 6 was selected for a subsequent batch adsorption study of all the studied parabens with an equilibrium time of 80 min. Next, in an attempt to investigate the interactions that occur between the adsorbent and the adsorbates, adsorption kinetics and isotherm studies were performed. All the studied parabens were found to best fit pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich isotherm with R 2 > 0.98 at room temperature (298 K). The interaction of the host-guest inclusion complex and the π-π interaction between βCD and a selected paraben compound (ArP) were identified by performing 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), together with ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopic analysis. Finally, the adsorption efficiency of the developed material was practically tested on tap water, drain water, and industrial wastewater, which revealed a significant removal of parabens of up to 60-90% in comparison with a prior analysis.
