A freeze-thaw PVA hydrogel loaded with guava leaf extract: physical and antibacterial properties

A polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel loaded with guava leaf extract (GLE) has potential applications as a wound dressing with good antibacterial activity. This study succeeded in fabricating a PVA hydrogel containing GLE using the freeze–thaw (FT) method. By varying the GLE concentration, we can adjust the physical properties of the hydrogel. The addition of GLE results in a decrease in cross-linking during gelation and an increase in the pore size of the hydrogels. The increase of the pore size made the swelling increase and the mechanical strength decrease. The weight loss of the hydrogel also increases because the phosphate buffer saline (PBS) dissolves the GLE. Increasing the GLE concentration caused the Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) absorbance peaks to widen due to hydrogen bonds formed during the FT process. The crystalline phase was transformed into an amorphous phase in the PVA/GLE hydrogel based on the X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) characterization showed a significant decrease in the hydrogel weight over temperatures of 30–150 °C due to the evaporation of water from the hydrogel matrix. The zone of inhibition of the PVA/GLE hydrogel increased with antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus of 17.93% per gram and 15.79% per gram against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Ions-induced gelation of alginate: Mechanisms and applications

Alginate is an important natural biopolymer and has been widely used in the food, biomedical, and chemical industries. Ca²⁺-induced gelation is one of the most important functional properties of alginate. The gelation mechanism is well-known as egg-box model, which has been intensively studied in the last five decades. Alginate also forms gels with many other monovalent, divalent or trivalent cations, and their gelation can possess different mechanisms from that of Ca²⁺-induced gelation. The resulted gels also exhibit different properties that lead to various applications. This study is proposed to summarize the gelation mechanisms of alginate induced by different cations, mainly including H⁺, Ca²⁺, Ba²⁺, Cu²⁺, Sr²⁺, Zn²⁺, Fe²⁺, Mn²⁺, Al³⁺, and Fe³⁺. The mechanism of H⁺-induced gelation of alginate mainly depends on the protonation of carboxyl groups. Divalent ions-induced gelation of alginate show different selection towards G, M, and GM blocks. Trivalent ions can bind to carboxyl groups of uronates with no selection. The properties and applications of these ionotropic alginate gels are also discussed. The knowledge gained in this study would provide useful information for the practical applications of alginate.

Comparison of the adsorption behaviors for methylene blue on two renewable gels with different physical state

High removal efficiency and excellent recyclability are the fundamental qualities that an outstanding adsorbent used for organic dye removal should possess. In this study, two recyclable gels (sodium alginate/Ca/fiber: SCFA hydrogels; cellulose nanofiber/chitosan: CNFCS aerogels) were successfully fabricated using the facile method. Additionally, the as-prepared adsorbents were investigated using a series of characterizations. The adsorption behavior and anti-interference performance of the synthesized gels were compared by choosing methylene blue (MB) as the model pollutant. The kinetic behavior of the gels towards MB was consistent with the pseudo first-order model, and the SCFA hydrogels reached adsorption equilibrium faster than the CNFCS aerogels. The maximum adsorption capacity of MB on the SCFA hydrogels and CNFCS aerogels was 1335.0 and 164.5 mg g^-1 (pH = 7.0, dosage: 0.5 g/L; initial concentration from 15 to 180 mg L^-1), respectively. More specifically, we found that the co-existing anions had different effects on MB adsorption over the gels used for MB removal. Furthermore, for the SCFA hydrogels, co-existing natural organic matter (NOM) at low concentrations enhanced MB adsorption, and then stabilized as the concentration of NOM increased. However, this increasing trend was not observed for MB adsorption on CNFCS aerogels; these gels exhibited a slight decrease at first, and then showed no change. Nevertheless, both the gels exhibited superior regeneration and recycling abilities.
