Abstract
INTRODUCTION The extracts derived from red seaweed have shown characteristics that may reduce inflammation. The abovementioned effects can potentially provide positive outcomes in managing inflammatory illnesses, including arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and other skin problems. AIM The polysaccharides were isolated from the Spyrida species. The water-soluble polysaccharides were extracted and fractionated from several Indian seaweeds (Red) using a simple, cost-effective approach. Anti-inflammatory effects were further evaluated and validated by FTIR and FESEM analyses. MATERIALS AND METHODS FT-IR and FESEM were used to assess the structural features of polysaccharides and the surface morphology. In addition, the red seaweed species of the genus Spyrida, which includes polysaccharides, was shown to significantly inhibit the denaturation of bovine serum albumin (BSA), further proving that the substance has anti-inflammatory qualities. RESULTS In this work, an assay to suppress protein activity was utilized to investigate the potential anti-inflammatory effects of polysaccharides derived from Spyrida. As predicted, increasing concentrations of the extract, ranging from 25 to 100 µg/ml, led to a rise in the percentage of inhibited protein denaturation. CONCLUSION A statistically significant difference was found between these findings and those obtained with aspirin, a commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (NSAID). The red algae that grow in the shallow waters of the southern Indian Ocean may be used in medicine.

Abstract
In this study, the oil-in-water Pickering emulsions were prepared using Haematococcus Pluvialis protein (HPP) particles as an emulsifier by a simple one-step emulsification method. The internal oil phase was as high as 70 % due to the excellent emulsifying properties of HPP, and the average size of oil droplets in the emulsion was around 20 μm. The emulsion prepared by 2.5 % HPP with the oil phase ratio of 70 % showed the best stability after 14 days of storage, and the emulsion could maintain stability at acidic condition, high ionic strength, low and high temperatures. However, all emulsion samples exhibited shear thinning phenomenon, and the higher HPP concentration and oil phase ratio led to greater G' and G″ modulus. NMR relaxation results showed that high concentration HPP could limit the mobility of free water in the emulsion and improve the emulsion stability. The HPP-stabilized emulsion could inhibit the oxidation of oil phase during storage due to the DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity of astaxanthin (AST) in HPP. Finally, the nutritional microspheres based on HPP-stabilized emulsion showed good stability in traditional dumplings and could reduce the loss of AST and DHA in algae oil during the boiling of dumplings.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of different compound polysaccharides (CPs) extracted from Folium nelumbinis, Fructus crataegi, Fagopyrum tataricum, Lycium barbarum, Semen cassiae, and Poria cocos (w/w, 2:4:2:1:1.5:1) by gradient ethanol precipitation on the physicochemical properties and biological activities. Three CPs (CP50, CP70, and CP80) were obtained and comprised rhamnose, arabinose, xylose, mannose, glucose, and galactose in different proportions. The CPs contained different amounts of total sugar, uronic acid, and proteins. These also exhibited different physical properties, including particle size, molecular weight, microstructure, and apparent viscosity. Scavenging abilities of 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), 1,1'-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl, and superoxide radicals of CP80 were more potent compared to those of the other two CPs. Furthermore, CP80 significantly increased serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and lipoprotein lipase (LPL), and hepatic lipase (HL) activity in the liver, while decreasing the serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), along with LPS activity. Therefore, CP80 may serve as a natural novel lipid regulator in the field of medicinal and functional food.

Abstract
Microalgal cells serve as solar-powered factories that produce pharmaceuticals, recombinant proteins (vaccines and drugs), and valuable natural byproducts that possess medicinal properties. The main advantages of microalgae as cell factories can be summarized as follows: they are fueled by photosynthesis, are carbon dioxide-neutral, have rapid growth rates, are robust, have low-cost cultivation, are easily scalable, pose no risk of human pathogenic contamination, and their valuable natural byproducts can be further processed. Despite their potential, there are many technical hurdles that need to be overcome before the commercial production of microalgal pharmaceuticals, and extensive studies regarding their impact on human health must still be conducted and the results evaluated. Clearly, much work remains to be done before microalgae can be used in the large-scale commercial production of pharmaceuticals. This review focuses on recent advancements in microalgal biotechnology and its future perspectives.

Abstract
Microalgae and cyanobacteria are photosynthetic microorganisms capable of synthesizing several biocompounds, including polysaccharides with antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. At the same time that the accumulation of biomolecules occurs, microalgae can use wastewater and gaseous effluents for their growth, mitigating these pollutants. The increase in the production of polysaccharides by microalgae can be achieved mainly through nutritional limitations, stressful conditions, and/or adverse conditions. These compounds are of commercial interest due to their biological and rheological properties, which allow their application in various sectors, such as pharmaceuticals and foods. Thus, to increase the productivity and competitiveness of microalgal polysaccharides with commercial hydrocolloids, the cultivation parameters and extraction/purification processes have been optimized. In this context, this review addresses an overview of the production, characterization, and potential applications of polysaccharides obtained by microalgae and cyanobacteria. Moreover, the main opportunities and challenges in relation to obtaining these compounds are highlighted.

Abstract
Marine environments comprise almost three quarters of Earth's surface, representing the largest ecosystem of our planet. The vast ecological and metabolic diversity found in marine microorganisms suggest that these marine resources have a huge potential as sources of novel commercially appealing biomolecules, such as exopolysaccharides (EPS). Six Alteromonas strains from different marine environments in French Polynesia atolls were selected for EPS extraction. All the EPS were heteropolysaccharides composed of different monomers, including neutral monosaccharides (glucose, galactose, and mannose, rhamnose and fucose), and uronic acids (glucuronic acid and galacturonic acid), which accounted for up to 45.5 mol% of the EPS compositions. Non-carbohydrate substituents, such as acetyl (0.5-2.1 wt%), pyruvyl (0.2-4.9 wt%), succinyl (1-1.8 wt%), and sulfate (1.98-3.43 wt%); and few peptides (1.72-6.77 wt%) were also detected. Thermal analysis demonstrated that the EPS had a degradation temperature above 260 °C, and high char yields (32-53%). Studies on EPS functional properties revealed that they produce viscous aqueous solutions with a shear thinning behavior and could form strong gels in two distinct ways: by the addition of Fe2+, or in the presence of Mg2+, Cu2+, or Ca2+ under alkaline conditions. Thus, these EPS could be versatile materials for different applications.

Abstract
Porphyridium cruentum is a unicellular microalga that can synthesize and secrete to the culture medium-high amounts of polysaccharides. In this study, the immunomodulatory, cytotoxic effect and antioxidant activity of the sulfated polysaccharides (PcSPs) were determinate. The PcSPs were precipitated with 2% Cetylpyridinium bromide hydrate and ethanol and purified by dialysis. The extract was lyophilized for its characterization by Fourier transform-Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antioxidant activity of PcSPs were examined with assay 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and compared with that of the biomass, observing significant differences between the results obtained from the PcSPs and biomass. To determine their ability to induce cytokine production Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukina-6 (IL-6), the immunomodulatory activity of the PcSPs has been evaluated. In the mouse macrophage cell line (RAW 264.7), PcSPs are potent inducers of IL-6 cytokines but mainly of TNF-α. The cytotoxic capacity of PcSPs was measured by the MTT colorimetric assay in colorectal carcinoma (HTC-116), human leukemia (U-937 and HL-60), breast cancer (MCF-7), lung cancer (NCI-H460) and human gingival fibroblasts (HGF-1) cell lines. The IC50 value of 2311.20 µg mL-1, 1676.74 µg mL-1, 1089.63 µg mL-1, 5498.14 µg mL-1 and 2861.49 µg mL-1 respectively in the tumor lines and 5022.55 µg mL-1 in gingival fibroblasts were obtained. Our study suggested that PcSPs from P. cruentum have a moderate immunomodulatory and cytotoxic effect. The results obtained indicate that the polysaccharides from P. cruentum are potent inducers of IL-6 cytokines and, most importantly, of TNF-α. PcSPs showed no evidence of antigenic activity or hypersensitivity when administered intraperitoneally in mice. Furthermore, the in vivo study revealed an improvement of local inflammatory response against stress in the peritoneum. These findings suggest that the PcSPs from P. cruentum might have potential as a valuable ingredient in nutraceutical products.

Abstract
The present study optimized the extraction characterization and antioxidant activities of water-soluble compound polysaccharides (CPs) from hawthorn, lotus leaf, Fagopyrum tataricum, semen cassiae, Lycium barbarum, and Poria cocos Chinese herbal medicines that have mass ratios of 4 : 2 : 2 : 1.5 : 1 : 1. The CPs yield equation was predicted using quantitative theory, to which a maximum CPs yield of 7.18±0.24 % under the following optimal extraction conditions: a water-to-raw material ratio of 30 mL/g, an extraction temperature of 65 °C, an extraction time of 45 min, and extraction mode ultrasonic-assistant extraction. CPs were consisted of Ara, Gal, Glc, Xyl, Man, GalA and GlcA in a molar ratio of 3.1 : 2.6 : 50.6 : 1.7 : 20.4 : 17.2 : 4.2. The HPGPC profiles and FT-IR spectra implied that CPs were heterogeneous acidic polysaccharides and possessed the β-d-pyranose configuration. Congo red test, CD spectrum and SEM revealed that CPs with three helix conformation showed a flocculent, granulous or sheet-like appearance. Furthermore, the relationships between antioxidant activity and concentration of CPs displayed significant positive correlation, and the scavenging abilities for DPPH, hydroxyl radical, ABTS, superoxide-anion radical and reducing power of CPs were 93.56±2.51 %, 84.03±1.69 %, 83.29±1.93 %, 37.49±1.93 % and 0.467±0.006 at a concentration of 4.0 mg/mL. Therefore, CPs could be applied as a potential natural antioxidant in pharmaceutical or functional food fields.

Abstract
Microalgae are a group of autotrophic microorganisms that live in marine, freshwater and soil ecosystems and produce organic substances in the process of photosynthesis. Due to their high metabolic flexibility, adaptation to various cultivation conditions as well as the possibility of rapid growth, the number of studies on their use as a source of biologically valuable products is growing rapidly. Currently, integrated technologies for the cultivation of microalgae aiming to isolate various biologically active substances from biomass to increase the profitability of algae production are being sought. To implement this kind of development, the high productivity of industrial cultivation systems must be accompanied by the ability to control the biosynthesis of biologically valuable compounds in conditions of intensive culture growth. The review considers the main factors (temperature, pH, component composition, etc.) that affect the biomass growth process and the biologically active substance synthesis in microalgae. The advantages and disadvantages of existing cultivation methods are outlined. An analysis of various methods for the isolation and overproduction of the main biologically active substances of microalgae (proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, pigments and vitamins) is presented and new technologies and approaches aimed at using microalgae as promising ingredients in value-added products are considered.

Abstract
Although the gastrointestinal pathogen Campylobacter jejuni was considered asaccharolytic, >50% of sequenced isolates possess an operon for L-fucose utilization. In C. jejuni NCTC11168, this pathway confers L-fucose chemotaxis and competitive colonization advantages in the piglet diarrhea model, but the catabolic steps remain unknown. Here we solved the putative dehydrogenase structure, resembling FabG of Burkholderia multivorans. The C. jejuni enzyme, FucX, reduces L-fucose and D-arabinose in vitro and both sugars are catabolized by fuc-operon encoded enzymes. This enzyme alone confers chemotaxis to both sugars in a non-carbohydrate-utilizing C. jejuni strain. Although C. jejuni lacks fucosidases, the organism exhibits enhanced growth in vitro when co-cultured with Bacteroides vulgatus, suggesting scavenging may occur. Yet, when excess amino acids are available, C. jejuni prefers them to carbohydrates, indicating a metabolic hierarchy exists. Overall this study increases understanding of nutrient metabolism by this pathogen, and identifies interactions with other gut microbes.

Abstract
An acidic polysaccharide, named LAP-1, was extracted and isolated from Leonurus artemisia (Laur.), and was further purified with ion exchange chromatography and gel chromatography. The extraction conditions of the crude polysaccharides were optimized by single-factor experiments and response surface methodology. The primary structure of the purified polysaccharide was measured by FT-IR, GC-MS, and NMR. The results showed that LAP-1 was mainly composed of galacturonic acid (GalA), mannose (Man), xylose (Xyl), rhamnose (Rha), arabinose (Ara), glucose (Glc), galactose (Gal), fucose (Fuc), ribose (Rib), and glucuronic acid (GlcA) in the molar ratio of 8.74 : 3.45 : 1.02 : 1 : 2.11 : 5.60 : 4.73 : 1.08 : 1.09 : 1.47. Primary structure analysis results indicated that LAP-1 contained characteristic glycosyl linkages such as →1)-α-d-Manp, →1)-α-d-Glcp, →1)-α-d-Arap-(2→, →1)-β-d-Galp-(3→, →1)-β-d-Manp-(4→, →1)-β-d-Galp-(4→, →1)-β-d-Glcp-(4→, →1)-β-d-GalAp-(4→, →1)-β-d-GlcAp-(4→, →1)-β-d-Manp-(4,6→, →1)-β-d-Manp-(3,4→. The Mw/Mn (PDI), Mn, Mz and Mw of LAP-1 were determined to be 1.423, 6.979 × 103 g mol−1, 1.409 × 104 g mol−1, and 9.930 × 103 g mol−1 by HPSEC-MALLS-RID and DLS. SEM, TEM and AFM results indicated that LAP-1 was a highly branched structure. LAP-1 showed mild anticoagulant activity, low toxicity, and less spontaneous bleeding compared with heparin sodium. These results demonstrated the effective coagulation activity of Leonurus artemisia polysaccharides. Thus, the purified LAP-1 could be explored as a promising anticoagulant agent for the treatment of coagulation disorders. An acidic polysaccharide, denoted LAP-1 was extracted, isolated and purified from Leonurus artemisia (Laur.), in addition to its structure and anticoagulant activity were explored.![]()

Abstract
In this study, the effects of acetyl-xylogalactan extracted from Sarcodia suieae on RAW 264.7 macrophage polarisation were evaluated. This extracted acetyl-xylogalactan had a monosaccharide composition of 91% galactose and 9% xylose, with polysaccharide and acetyl contents of 80.6% and 19.3%, respectively. MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy revealed the molecular weight of the acetyl-xylogalactan to be 88.5 kDa. After acetyl-xylogalactan treatment, RAW 264.7 macrophage polarisation was noted, along with enhanced phagocytic ability. Furthermore, the Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay was performed and the results demonstrated non-significant alteration in lactate dehydrogenase levels in the treated cells. Next, interleukin (IL) 1β, TNF, and Malt-1 expression in RAW 264.7 macrophages treated with the S. suieae acetyl-xylogalactan was investigated through real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and the results demonstrated that S. suieae acetyl-xylogalactan induced IL-1β and Malt-1 expression. RNA sequencing analysis results indicated the S. suieae acetyl-xylogalactan positively regulated cytokine production and secretion, protein secretion, and response to IL-1 activation, based on the observed GO terms. The predicted target genes in the GO enrichment analysis were found to upregulate NF-κB signalling and M0 to M1 macrophage conversion through the observed cytokine production. Thus, acetyl-xylogalactan can positively regulate RAW 264.7 macrophage polarisation.
