Preparation of a novel polyacrylic acid and chitosan interpenetrating network hydrogel for removal of U(vi) from aqueous solutions

Anti-Biofouling Polyzwitterion-Poly(amidoxime) Composite Hydrogel for Highly Enhanced Uranium Extraction from Seawater

Amidoxime-functionalized hydrogels are one of most promising adsorbents for high-efficiency uranium (U) extraction from seawater, but bioadhesion on their surface seriously decreases their adsorption efficiency and largely shortens their service life. Herein, a semi-interpenetrating zwitterion-poly(amidoxime) (ZW-PAO) hydrogel was explored through introducing a PAO polymer into a poly [3-(dimethyl 4-vinylbenzyl amino) propyl sulfonate] (PDVBAP) polyzwitterionic (PZW) network via ultraviolet (UV) polymerization. Owing to the anti-polyelectrolyte effect of the PZW network, this ZW-PAO hydrogel can provide excellent super-hydrophilicity in seawater for high-efficiency U-adsorption from seawater. Furthermore, the ZW-PAO hydrogel had outstanding anti-biofouling performance for both highly enhanced U-adsorption and a relatively long working life in natural seawater. As a result, during only 25 days in seawater (without filtering bacteria), the U-uptake amount of this ZW-PAO hydrogel can reach 9.38 mg/g and its average rate can reach 0.375 mg/(g∙day), which is excellent among reported adsorbents. This work has explored a promising hydrogel for high-efficiency U-recovery from natural seawater and will inspire new strategy for U-adsorbing materials.

Advances in Hydrogels Research for Ion Detection and Adsorption

The continuing development of heavy industry worldwide has led to an exponential increase in the amount of wastewater discharged from factories and entering the natural world in the form of rivers and air. As the top of the food chain in the natural world, toxic ions penetrate the human body through the skin, nose, and a few milligrams of toxic ions can often cause irreversible damage to the human body, so ion detection and adsorption is related to the health and safety of human beings. Hydrogel is a hydrophilic three-dimensional reticulated polymer material that first synthesized by Wichterle and Lim in 1960, which is rich in porous structure and has a variety of active adsorption sites as a new type of adsorbent and can be used to detect ions through the introduction of photonic crystals, DNA, fluorescent probe, and other materials. This review describes several synthetic and natural hydrogels for the adsorption and detection of ions and discusses the mechanism of ion adsorption by hydrogels, and provide a perspective for the future development.

Chitosan/Poly(maleic acid-alt-vinyl acetate) Hydrogel Beads for the Removal of Cu2+ from Aqueous Solution

Covalent cross-linked hydrogels based on chitosan and poly(maleic acid-alt-vinyl acetate) were prepared as spherical beads. The structural modifications of the beads during the preparation steps (dropping in liquid nitrogen and lyophilization, thermal treatment, washing with water, and treatment with NaOH) were monitored by FT-IR spectroscopy. The hydrogel beads have a porous inner structure, as shown by SEM microscopy; moreover, they are stable in acidic and basic pH due to the covalent crosslinking. The swelling degree is strongly influenced by the pH since the beads possess ionizable amine and carboxylic groups. The binding capacity for Cu2+ ions was examined in batch mode as a function of sorbent composition, pH, contact time, and the initial concentration of Cu2+. The kinetic data were well-fitted with the pseudo-second-order kinetic, while the sorption equilibrium data were better fitted with Langmuir and Sips isotherms. The maximum equilibrium sorption capacity was higher for the beads obtained with a 3:1 molar ratio between the maleic copolymer and chitosan (142.4 mg Cu2+ g-1), compared with the beads obtained using a 1:1 molar ratio (103.7 mg Cu2+ g-1). The beads show a high degree of reusability since no notable decrease in the sorption capacity was observed after five consecutive sorption/desorption cycles.

A pH-sensitive drug delivery using biodegradable succinoglycan/chitosan hydrogels with synergistic antibacterial activity

Since succinoglycan (SG) produced by Sinorhizobium meliloti is an anionic polysaccharide having substituents such as succinate and pyruvate groups, a polyelectrolyte composite hydrogel can be made together with chitosan (CS), a cationic polysaccharide. We fabricated polyelectrolyte SG/CS hydrogels using the semi-dissolving acidified sol-gel transfer (SD-A-SGT) method. The hydrogel showed optimized mechanical strength and thermal stability at an SG:CS weight ratio of 3:1. This optimized SG/CS hydrogel exhibited a high compressive stress of 497.67 kPa at 84.65 % strain and a high tensile strength of 9.14 kPa when stretched to 43.73 %. Additionally, this SG/CS hydrogel showed a pH-controlled drug release pattern for 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), where a change from pH 7.4 to 2.0 increased the release from 60 % to 94 %. In addition, this SG/CS hydrogel not only showed a cell viability of 97.57 %, but also showed synergistic antibacterial activity of 97.75 % and 96.76 % against S. aureus and E. coli, respectively. These results indicate the potential of this hydrogel as a biocompatible and biodegradable hydrogel material for wound healing, tissue engineering, and drug release systems.

Efficient and selective capture of uranium by polyethyleneimine-modified chitosan composite microspheres from radioactive nuclear waste

Uranium extraction from radioactive nuclear waste is vital for sustainable energy supply and ecological security. Herein, a polyethyleneimine-chitosan composite microspheres n-PEI/ECH-CTS (n = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) were synthetized for efficient and selective uranium adsorption. The prepared chitosan microspheres with uniform size, uniform dispersion and good mechanical strength combine cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits. The 0.4-PEI/ECH-CTS exhibits the highest adsorption capacity of 380.65 mg g^-1 within only 4 h due to high nitrogen content of 6.57 mol kg^-1. The DFT calculations confirms that the optimal coordination mode of UO₂²⁺ and 0.4-PEI/ECH-CTS is one UO₂²⁺ chelated with two -NH₂ from two adsorption units, respectively. Adsorption efficiency of U(VI) from simulated nuclear wastewater achieves to 100%, and the K_d value is up to 1.1 × 10⁴ mL g^-1, which is 1.7 × 10⁴-6.1 × 10⁴ times that of coexisting ions. The C_U(VI) reduces in simulated wastewater from 10.98 mg L^-1 to 1 μg L^-1, which is well below the US Environmental Protection Agency uranium limits for drinking water (30 μg L^-1). Besides, 0.4-PEI/ECH-CTS still maintains above 95% adsorption efficiency after seven cycles. In short, the 0.4-PEI/ECH-CTS microspheres integrate high performance, practicality and cost-effectiveness, which has great advantages in practical industrial applications.

Sorption behavior of natural uranium from aqueous solutions using modified activated carbon with quinoline

The activated carbon (AC) was modified by molecules of quinoline (Q) and the new prepared AC impregnated by Q was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, surface measurements, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). These analytical techniques demonstrated a successful preparation of AC-Q as a new material which was examined for its sorption behavior for natural uranium. The sorption results by batch mode indicated the optimum conditions for 94.5% removal of U(VI) ions at pH 4.7 and an equilibrium contact time of 90 min. The analysis of sorption data revealed that the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir were more fitted than other estimated models. The sorption capacity of U(VI) was ∼63 mg/g onto AC-Q as adsorbent martial. The thermodynamic data demonstrated that the sorption of uranium is endothermic and spontaneous. New mechanism was supposed based on the role of the abrasive material quinoline on the mechanical removal of uranium from aqueous solution.

Hydrolytically stable foamed HKUST-1@CMC composites realize high-efficient separation of U(VI)

HKUST-1@CMC (HK@CMC) composites that show good acid and alkali resistance and radiation resistance were successfully synthesized by introducing carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) onto the surface of HKUST-1 using a foaming strategy. For the first time, the composites were explored as efficient adsorbents for U(VI) trapping from aqueous solution, with encouraging results of large adsorption capacity, fast adsorption kinetics, and desirable selectivity toward U(VI) over a series of competing ions. More importantly, a hybrid derivative film was successfully prepared for the dynamic adsorption of U(VI). The results show that ∼90% U(VI) can be removed when 45 mg L-1 U(VI) was passed through the film one time, and the removal percentage is still more than 80% even after four adsorption-desorption cycles, ranking one of the most practical U(VI) scavengers. This work offers new clues for application of the Metal-organic-framework-based materials in the separation of radionuclides from wastewater.

Dual pH-/thermo-responsive chitosan-based hydrogels prepared using "click" chemistry for colon-targeted drug delivery applications

A dual pH-/thermo-responsive hydrogel was designed based on a polyelectrolyte complex of polyacrylic acid (PAA) and norbornene-functionalized chitosan (CsNb), which was synergized with chemical crosslinking using bistetrazine-poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (bisTz-PNIPAM). The thermo-responsive polymeric crosslinker, bisTz-PNIPAM, was synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation transfer polymerization of NIPAM. FTIR, XRD, rheological and morphological analyses demonstrated the successful formation of the polyelectrolyte network. The highly porous structure generated through the in-situ "click" reaction between Tz and Nb resulted in a higher drug loading (29.35 %). The hydrogel (COOH/NH₂ mole ratio of 3:1) exhibited limited drug release (8.5 %) of 5-ASA at a pH of 2.2, but it provided an almost complete release (92 %) at pH 7.4 and 37 °C within 48 h due to the pH responsiveness of PAA, hydrogel porosity, and shrinkage behavior of PNIPAM. The hydrogels were biodegradable and non-toxic against human fibroblast cells, suggesting their considerable potential for a colon-targeted drug delivery system.

Prospective bioremediation of toxic heavy metals in water by surfactant exopolysaccharide of Ochrobactrum pseudintermedium using cost-effective substrate

Globally, the underlying peril of cumulative toxicity of heavy metals in water bodies contaminated by industrial effluents is a matter of great concern to the environmentalists. Heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and nickel are particularly liable for this. Such toxic water is not only hazardous to human health but also harmful to aquatic animals. Remedial measures are being taken by physico-chemical techniques, but most of them are neither eco-friendly nor cost-effective. Biological means like bioaccumulation of heavy metals by viable bacteria are often tedious. In the present study, biosorption of heavy metals is successfully expedited by surfactant exopolysaccharide (SEPS) of Ochrobactrum pseudintermedium C1 as a simple, safe, and economically sustainable option utilizing an easily available and cost-effective substrate like molasses extract. Its efficacy in bioremediation of toxic heavy metals like cadmium, nickel, and lead have been studied by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and verified by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). FTIR and zeta potential studies have also been carried out to explore this novel biosorption potential. Results are conclusive and promising. Moreover, this particular SEPS alone can remediate all these three toxic heavy metals in water. For futuristic applications, it might be a prospective and cost-effective resource for bioremediation of toxic heavy metals in aqueous environment.

An Ion-Crosslinked Supramolecular Hydrogel for Ultrahigh and Fast Uranium Recovery from Seawater

Large-scale uranium extraction from seawater is a crucial but challenging part of nuclear power generation. In this study, a new ion-crosslinked supramolecular Zn²⁺ -poly(amidoxime) (PAO) hydrogel that can super-efficiently adsorb uranium from seawater is explored. By simply mixing two solutions of zinc chloride and PAO, a supramolecular Zn²⁺ -PAO hydrogel is achieved via the interaction between zinc cations and amidoxime anions. In contrast with existing amidoxime-functionalized hydrogel-based adsorbents having low PAO contents and fiber-based adsorbents with weak hydrophilicity, the PAOs can be directly crosslinked using a small quantity of superhydrophilic zinc ion. Thus, a supramolecular hydrogel is formed, having both a high content of well-dispersed PAOs and good hydrophilicity. Relative to reported adsorbents, this low-cost hydrogel membrane exhibits outstanding uranium adsorption performance, reaching 1188 mg g^-1 of M_U /M_{dry gel} in 32 ppm uranium-spiked water. More importantly, after immersion in natural seawater for only 4 weeks, the uranium extraction capacity of the Zn²⁺ -PAO hydrogel membrane reaches 9.23 mg g^-1 of M_U /M_{dry gel} . This work can provide a general strategy for designing a new type of supramolecular hydrogel, crosslinked by various bivalent/multivalent cation-crosslinkers and even many other superhydrophilic supramolecular crosslinkers, for the high-efficient and massive extraction of uranium from seawater.

Self-assembled three-dimensional double network graphene oxide/polyacrylic acid hybrid aerogel for removal of Cu2+ from aqueous solution

Three-dimensional (3D) double network graphene oxide/polyacrylic acid (GO/PAA) hybrid aerogels were fabricated under mild conditions from the mixture of GO and acrylic acid (AA) monomers using a one-pot in situ solution polymerization process which included the polymerization of AA and the self-assembly of functional GO sheets. The PAA chains served as not only binder to assemble GO sheets into 3D framework but also modifier to provide more active functional groups. The adsorbents based on such material exhibited superior adsorption performance towards Cu²⁺ ions in aqueous media due to rich mesopores, high specific surface area, and abundant active sites. This work brings a new vision for assembling 3D porous graphene-based nanomaterials as adsorbents in environmental protection.
