Recent Advances of Doped SnO2 as Electron Transport Layer for High-Performance Perovskite Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have garnered considerable attention over the past decade owing to their low cost and proven high power conversion efficiency of over 25%. In the planar heterojunction PSC structure, tin oxide was utilized as a substitute material for the TiO2 electron transport layer (ETL) owing to its similar physical properties and high mobility, which is suitable for electron mining. Nevertheless, the defects and morphology significantly changed the performance of SnO2 according to the different deposition techniques, resulting in the poor performance of PSCs. In this review, we provide a comprehensive insight into the factors that specifically influence the ETL in PSC. The properties of the SnO2 materials are briefly introduced. In particular, the general operating principles, as well as the suitability level of doping in SnO2, are elucidated along with the details of the obtained results. Subsequently, the potential for doping is evaluated from the obtained results to achieve better results in PSCs. This review aims to provide a systematic and comprehensive understanding of the effects of different types of doping on the performance of ETL SnO2 and potentially instigate further development of PSCs with an extension to SnO2-based PSCs.

Evolutionary Progress of Silica Aerogels and Their Classification Based on Composition: An Overview

Aerogels are highly porous materials with fascinating properties prepared using sol-gel chemistry. Due to their unique physical and chemical properties, aerogels are recognized as potential candidates for diverse applications, including thermal insulation, sensor, environmental remediation, etc. Despite these applications, aerogels are not routinely found in our daily life because they are fragile and have highly limited scale-up productions. It remains extremely challenging to improve the mechanical properties of aerogels without adversely affecting their other properties. To boost the practical applications, it is necessary to develop efficient, low-cost methods to produce aerogels in a sustainable way. This comprehensive review surveys the progress in the development of aerogels and their classification based on the chemical composition of the network. Recent achievements in organic, inorganic, and hybrid materials and their outstanding physical properties are discussed. The major focus of this review lies in approaches that allow tailoring of aerogel properties to meet application-driven requirements. We begin with a brief discussion of the fundamental issues in silica aerogels and then proceed to provide an overview of the synthesis of organic and hybrid aerogels from various precursors. Organic aerogels show promising results with excellent mechanical strength, but there are still several issues that need further exploration. Finally, growing points and perspectives of the aerogel field are summarized.

Dynamics of Droplets Impacting on Aerogel, Liquid Infused, and Liquid-Like Solid Surfaces

Droplets impacting superhydrophobic surfaces have been extensively studied due to their compelling scientific insights and important industrial applications. In these cases, the commonly reported impact regime was that of complete rebound. This impact regime strongly depends on the nature of the superhydrophobic surface. Here, we report the dynamics of droplets impacting three hydrophobic slippery surfaces, which have fundamental differences in normal liquid adhesion and lateral static and kinetic liquid friction. For an air cushion-like (super)hydrophobic solid surface (Aerogel) with low adhesion and low static and low kinetic friction, complete rebound can start at a very low Weber (We) number (∼1). For slippery liquid-infused porous (SLIP) surfaces with high adhesion and low static and low kinetic friction, complete rebound only occurs at a much higher We number (>5). For a slippery omniphobic covalently attached liquid-like (SOCAL) solid surface, with high adhesion and low static friction similar to SLIPS but higher kinetic friction, complete rebound was not observed, even for a We as high as 200. Furthermore, the droplet ejection volume after impacting the Aerogel surface is 100% across the whole range of We numbers tested compared to other surfaces. In contrast, droplet ejection for SLIPs was only observed consistently when the We was above 5-10. For SOCAL, 100% (or near 100%) ejection volume was not observed even at the highest We number tested here (∼200). This suggests that droplets impacting our (super)hydrophobic Aerogel and SLIPS lose less kinetic energy. These insights into the differences between normal adhesion and lateral friction properties can be used to inform the selection of surface properties to achieve the most desirable droplet impact characteristics to fulfill a wide range of applications, such as deicing, inkjet printing, and microelectronics.

Silica Aerogel-Rubber Composite: A Sustainable Alternative for Buildings' Thermal Insulation

Silica aerogel composites with recycled tire rubber have been synthesized and evaluated for their potential use for thermal protection in buildings. The present work describes for the first time the preparation of silica-based aerogel composites containing recycled rubber tires reinforced with polyvinyl butyral (PVB) by hot pressing. The developed composite was extensively characterized regarding its physical, morphological, thermal and mechanical features, and the results showed their properties were relevant, leading to composites with different properties/performances. The obtained bulk density values were satisfactory, down to 474 kg·m^-3, and very good thermal properties were achieved, namely, thermal conductivity as low as 55 mW·m^-1·K^-1 for composites with silica aerogel, recycled tire rubber and PVB. The most promising composites were those based on low bulk density and thermal conductivity values, and they were thermally stable, indicating their suitability for thermal insulation applications.

Novel multifunctional polymethylsilsesquioxane-silk fibroin aerogel hybrids for environmental and thermal insulation applications

The development of aerogels with improved mechanical properties, to expand their utility in high-performance applications, is still a big challenge. Besides fossil-fuel based polymers that have been extensively utilized as platforms to enhance the mechanical strength of silsesquioxane and silica-based aerogels, using green biopolymers from various sustainable renewable resources are currently drawing significant attention. In this work, we process silk fibroin (SF) proteins, extracted from silkworm cocoons, with organically substituted alkoxysilanes in an entirely aqueous based solution via a successive sol-gel approach, and show for the first time that it is possible to produce homogeneous interpenetrated (IPN) polymethylsilsesquioxane (PMSQ)-SF hybrid aerogel monoliths with significantly improved mechanical properties. Emphasis is given to an improvement of the molecular interaction of the two components (SF biopolymer and PMSQ) using a silane coupling agent and to the design of pore structure. We succeeded in developing a novel class of compressible, light-weight, and hierarchically organized meso-macroporous PMSQ-SF IPN hybrid aerogels by carefully controlling the sol-gel parameters at a molecular level. Typically, these aerogels have a compressive strength (δ max) of up to 14 MPa, together with high flexibility in both compression and bending, compressibility up to 80% strain with very low bulk density (ρ b) of 0.08-0.23 g cm-3. By considering these promising properties, the superhydrophobic/oleophilic PMSQ-SF aerogel hybrids exhibited a high competency for selective absorption of a variety of organic pollutants (absorption capacities ∼500-2600 g g-1 %) from water and acted as a high-performance filter for continuous water/oil separation. Moreover, they have demonstrated impressive thermal insulation performance (λ = 0.032-0.044 W m-1 K-1) with excellent fire retardancy and self-extinguishing capabilities. Therefore, the PMSQ-SF aerogel hybrids would be a new class of open porous material and are expected to further extend the practical applications of this class of porous compounds.
