Effect of surfactant concentration in electrolyte on the fabrication and properties of nickel-graphene nanocomposite coating synthesized by electrochemical co-deposition

Electrodeposition and Properties of Composite Ni Coatings Modified with Multilayer Graphene Oxide

Within the framework of this study, Ni-based composite electrochemical coatings (CECs) modified with multilayer graphene oxide (GO) processed using microwave radiation have been deposited. The process of these coatings' electrodeposition in the potentiodynamic mode has been studied. The structure of Ni-GO and Ni-GO (MW) CECs has been studied using X-ray phase analysis (XPA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).It has been shown that the addition of GO into a nickel deposit contributes to the formation of uniform fine-grained coatings. As a result, the microhardness of the Ni-GO (MW) CECs increases by 1.40 times compared to Ni without GO. The corrosion-electrochemical behavior of nickel CECs in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution was researched. It was established that the corrosion rate of the nickel-GO (MW) CEC in 3.5% NaCl decreases by about 1.70 times in contrast to unmodified nickel coatings. This effect is due to the absence of agglomeration of the graphene oxide in the volume of the nickel matrix and the impermeability of GO particles to the corrosive environment.

Enhanced Corrosion Resistance of Layered Double Hydroxide Films on Mg Alloy: The Key Role of Cationic Surfactant

In this study, dense anticorrosion magnesium-aluminum layered double hydroxide (MgAl-LDH) films were prepared for the first time by introducing a cationic surfactant tetradecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (TTAB) in the process of in situ hydrothermal synthesis of Mg-Al LDH films on an AZ31 magnesium alloy. Results of XRD, FTIR, and SEM confirmed that TTAB forms the MgAl-LDH-TTAB, although TTAB cannot enter into LDH layers, and MgAl-LDH-TTAB powders are much smaller and more homogenous than MgAl-CO32--LDH powders. Results of SEM, EDS, mapping, and XPS confirmed that TTAB forms the MgAl-LDH-TTAB films and endows LDH films with denser structure, which provides films with better shielding efficiency. Results of potentiodynamic polarization curves (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) confirmed that MgAl-LDH-TTABx g films have better corrosion resistance than an MgAl-CO32--LDH film. The corrosion current density (icorr) of the MgAl-LDH-TTAB0.35 g film in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was reduced to 1.09 × 10-8 A.cm-2 and the |Z|f = 0.05 Hz value was increased to 4.48 × 105 Ω·cm2. Moreover, the increasing concentration of TTAB in MgAl-LDH-TTABx g (x = 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.35) provided denser outer layer LDH films and thereby increased the corrosion resistance of the AZ31 Mg alloy. Additionally, the |Z|f = 0.05 Hz values of the MgAl-LDH-TTAB0.35 g film still remained at 105 Ω·cm2 after being immersed in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for 168 h, implying the good long-term corrosion resistance of MgAl-LDH-TTABx g films. Therefore, introducing cationic surfactant in the process of in situ hydrothermal synthesis can be seen as a novel approach to creating efficient anticorrosion LDH films for Mg alloys.

Application of surfactants as anticorrosive materials: A comprehensive review

Corrosion is the degradation of a metal due to its reaction with the environment. One of the most efficient ways of securing metal surfaces from corrosion is the use of corrosion inhibitors. Their efficacy is connected to their chemical composition, their molecular structures, and their adsorption affinities on the metal surface. This review article focuses on the prospects of different types of monomeric and gemini surfactants, mixed surfactants systems, surfactants- additives mixed systems, inhibitors-surfactants (as additives) mixed systems, and ionic liquid based surfactants as promising corrosion-inhibiting formulations in the aqueous phase and the role of surfactants in developing protective coatings. The analysis starts with an accurate overview of the characteristics, types, and structure-property-performance relationship of anti-corrosion formulations of such inhibitors.

Graphene-Reinforced Zn-Ni Alloy Composite Coating on Iron Substrates by Pulsed Reverse Electrodeposition and Its High Corrosion Resistance

In this paper, a novel kind of graphene (Gr)-reinforced Zn-Ni alloy composite coating is successfully prepared on an iron substrate by pulsed reverse electrodeposition. Hydrophilic graphene oxide (GO) is directly added to the electrolyte and reduced to Gr during coating. The experimental results reveal that (1) there is an optimal adding amount (about 0.4 g/L) of GO in the electrolyte for achieving the highest mechanical properties and corrosion resistance; (2) the composite coating shows grain refinement and a dense microstructure due to heterogeneous nucleation sites provided from the Gr sheets during electrodeposition; and (3) compared to the regular Zn-Ni coating, the composite coating exhibits many enhancements, including hardness increase by 2.3 times, elastic modulus increase by 39%, and corrosion rate decrease from 37.66 to 1.30 mils/annum. This process has advantages such as being simple, effective, well repeatable, economical, and supporting large-scale production and is expected to be widely applied in electronics, automobiles, marine engineering, and military industries.

Electrodeposited nickel-graphene nanocomposite coating: effect of graphene nanoplatelet size on its microstructure and hardness

In this study, the effect of graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) size on the microstructure and hardness of the electrodeposited nickel-graphene nanocomposite coatings were investigated. GNPs with different sizes were prepared by using a high energy ball milling technique. The experimental result revealed the high energy ball milling technique could reduce the size, increase the surface area, and improve the dispersion ability of GNPs. The microstructure, hardness, and components of the nanocomposite coatings were greatly affected by GNP sizes. The highest microhardness was measured to be 273 HV for the nanocomposite coatings containing 5 h-milled GNPs, which is increased up to ∼47% compared to pristine Ni coating. The enhancement in the hardness is attributed to the uniform dispersion of the small GNP sizes inside the Ni matrix and the Ni grain size reduction when using milled GNPs.
