Molecular heterogeneous catalysts derived from bipyridine-based organosilica nanotubes for C-H bond activation

Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling Reaction Using Palladium Catalysts Supported on Phosphine Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica

Phosphine periodic mesoporous organosilicas (R-P-PMO-TMS: R=Ph, tBu), which possess electron-donating alkyl substituents on the phosphorus atom, were synthesized using bifunctional compounds with alkoxysilyl- and phosphino groups, bis[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]phenylphosphine borane (1 a) and bis[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]-tert-butylphosphine borane (1 b). Immobilization of Pd(0) species was performed to give R-P-Pd-PMO-TMS: R=Ph (2 a), tBu (3 a), respectively. The Pd(0) immobilized 2 a and 3 a were applicable as catalysts for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of aryl chlorides with phenylboronic acid. It was revealed that 3 a bearing more electron-donating tBu groups exhibited higher catalytic activity. Various functional groups including both electron withdrawing and donating substituents were compatible in the system. The recyclability of 3 a was examined to support its moderate utility for the recycle use.

XPS and HR TEM Elucidation of the Diversity of Titania-Supported Single-Site Ir Catalyst Performance in Spin-Selective Propene Hydrogenation

Immobilized [Ir(COD)Cl]2-Linker/TiO2 catalysts with linkers containing Py, P(Ph)2 and N(CH3)2 functional groups were prepared. The catalysts were tested via propene hydrogenation with parahydrogen in a temperature range from 40 °C to 120 °C which was monitored via NMR. The catalytic behavior of [Ir(COD)Cl]2-Linker/TiO2 is explained on the basis of quantitative and qualitative XPS data analysis performed for the catalysts before and after the reaction at 120 °C. It is shown that the temperature dependence of propene conversion and the enhancement of the NMR signal are explained via a combination of the stabilities of both the linker and immobilized [Ir(COD)Cl]2 complex. It is demonstrated that the N(CH3)2-linker is the most stable at the surface of TiO2 under used reaction conditions. As a result, only this sample shows a rise in the enhancement of the NMR signal in the 100-120 °C temperature range.

Iridium-Complexed Dipyridyl-Pyridazine Organosilica as a Catalyst for Water Oxidation

The heterogenization of metal-complex catalysts to be applied in water oxidation reactions is a currently growing field of great scientific impact for the development of energy conversion devices simulating the natural photosynthesis process. The attachment of IrCp*Cl complexes to the dipyridyl-pyridazine N-chelating sites on the surface of SBA-15 promotes the formation of metal bipyridine-like complexes, which can act as catalytic sites in the oxidation of water to dioxygen, the key half-reaction of artificial photosynthetic systems. The efficiency of the heterogeneous catalyst, Ir@NdppzSBA, in cerium(IV)-driven water oxidation was thoroughly evaluated, achieving high catalytic activity even at a long reaction time. The reusability and stability were also examined after three reaction cycles, with a slight loss of activity. A comparison with an analogous homogeneous iridium catalyst revealed the enhanced durability and performance of the heterogeneous system based on the Ir@NdppzSBA catalyst due to the stability of the SBA-15 structure as well as the isolated metal active sites. Thereby, this new versatile synthesis route for the preparation of water oxidation catalysts opens a new avenue for the construction of alternative heterogeneous catalytic systems with high surface area, ease of functionalization, and facile separation to improve the efficiency in the water oxidation reaction.

Efficient and Selective Oxygenation of Cycloalkanes and Alkyl Aromatics with Oxygen through Synergistic Catalysis of Bimetallic Active Centers in Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Metalloporphyrins

Confined catalytic realms and synergistic catalysis sites were constructed using bimetallic active centers in two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to achieve highly selective oxygenation of cycloalkanes and alkyl aromatics with oxygen towards partly oxygenated products. Every necessary characterization was carried out for all the two-dimensional MOFs. The selective oxygenation of cycloalkanes and alkyl aromatics with oxygen was accomplished with exceptional catalytic performance using two-dimensional MOF Co-TCPPNi as a catalyst. Employing Co-TCPPNi as a catalyst, both the conversion and selectivity were improved for all the hydrocarbons investigated. Less disordered autoxidation at mild conditions, inhibited free-radical diffusion by confined catalytic realms, and synergistic C-H bond oxygenation catalyzed by second metal center Ni employing oxygenation intermediate R-OOH as oxidant were the factors for the satisfying result of Co-TCPPNi as a catalyst. When homogeneous metalloporphyrin T(4-COOCH3)PPCo was replaced by Co-TCPPNi, the conversion in cyclohexane oxygenation was enhanced from 4.4% to 5.6%, and the selectivity of partly oxygenated products increased from 85.4% to 92.9%. The synergistic catalytic mechanisms were studied using EPR research, and a catalysis model was obtained for the oxygenation of C-H bonds with O2. This research offered a novel and essential reference for both the efficient and selective oxygenation of C-H bonds and other key chemical reactions involving free radicals.

1,10-Phenanthroline-based periodic mesoporous organosilica: from its synthesis to its application in the cobalt-catalyzed alkyne hydrosilylation

1,10-Phenanthroline (Phen) is a typical ligand for metal complexation and various metal/Phen complexes have been applied as a catalyst in several organic transformations. This study reports the synthesis of a Phen-based periodic mesoporous organosilica (Phen-PMO) with the Phen moieties being directly incorporated into the organosilica framework. The Phen-PMO precursor, 3,8-bis[(triisopropoxysilyl)methyl]-1,10-phenanthroline (1a), was prepared via the Kumada-Tamao-Corriu cross-coupling of 3,8-dibromo-1,10-phenanthroline and [(triisopropoxysilyl)methyl]magnesium chloride. The co-condensation of 1a and 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane in the presence of P123 as the template surfactant afforded Phen-PMO 3 with an ordered 2-D hexagonal mesoporous structure as confirmed by nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurements, X-ray diffraction, and transition electron microscopy. Co(OAc)₂ was immobilized on Phen-PMO 3, and the obtained complex showed good catalytic activity for the hydrosilylation reaction of phenylacetylene with phenylsilane.

Recent advanced development of metal-loaded mesoporous organosilicas as catalytic nanoreactors

Ordered periodic mesoporous organosilicas have been widely applied in adsorption/separation/sensor technologies and the fields of biomedicine/biotechnology as well as catalysis. Crucially, surface modification with functional groups and metal complexes or nanoparticle loading has ensured high efficacy and efficiency. This review will highlight the current state of design and catalytic application of transition metal-loaded mesoporous organosilica nanoreactors. It will outline prominent synthesis approaches for the grafting of metal complexes, metal salt adsorption and in situ preparation of metal nanoparticles, and summarize the catalytic performance of the resulting mesoporous organosilica hybrid materials. Finally, the potential prospects and challenges of metal-loaded mesoporous organosilica nanoreactors are addressed.

Biosynthesis of AgNPs onto the urea-based periodic mesoporous organosilica (AgxNPs/Ur-PMO) for antibacterial and cell viability assay

Nano-size silver particles were stabilized on the inner surfaces of urea based periodic mesoporous organosilica (Ur-PMO). Aqueous extract of Euphorbia leaves as a sustainable and green reducing agent was applied for Ag-nanoparticles growth into the Ur-PMO channels. Physical and chemical properties of organosilica materials synthesized using various techniques such as FT-IR, small-angle XRD, PXRD, FESEM, TEM, SEM-EDX and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) were examined. Finally, the AgNPs/Ur-PMO were investigated on cell viability assay. An in vitro cytotoxicity test using MMT assay displayed that the designed material has good biocompatibility and could be a promising candidate for biomedical applications. The results also showed that the AgNPs/Ur-PMO compounds (especially, PMO; 1.27% AgNPs) had relatively good antibacterial and antibiofilm effects. It seems that the use of these compounds in hospital environments can reduce nosocomial infections as well as reduce antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Selective aerobic oxidation of cyclic ethers to lactones over Au/CeO2 without any additives

Selective oxidation of ethers to lactones with O₂ as a benign oxidant using Au/CeO₂ as the catalyst has been developed. The oxygen vacancies and Au⁰ species on the surface of CeO₂ contribute to the activation of O₂. The excellent selectivity of lactones is due to the adsorption of ethers and activation of the C(sp³)-H bond on Au/CeO₂.

A supported manganese complex with amine-bis(phenol) ligand for catalytic benzylic C(sp3)–H bond oxidation

With regards to the importance of direct and selective activation of C–H bonds in oxidation processes, we develop a supported manganese amine bis(phenol) ligand complex as a novel catalyst with the aim of obtaining valuable products such as carboxylic acids and ketones that have an important role in life, industry and academic laboratories. We further analyzed and characterized the catalyst using the HRTEM, SEM, FTIR, TGA, VSM, XPS, XRD, AAS, and elemental analysis (CHN) techniques. Also, the catalytic evaluation of our system for direct oxidation of benzylic C–H bonds under solvent-free condition demonstrated that the heterogeneous form of our catalyst has high efficiency in comparison with homogeneous ones due to more stability of the supported complex. Furthermore, the structural and morphological stability of our efficient recyclable catalytic system has been investigated and all of the data proved that the complex was firmly anchored to the magnetite nanoparticles.

An environmentally friendly and efficient catalyst containing three interesting parts, Mn, the amine bis(phenolate) ligand (H₃L^GDC) and the magnetic nanoparticles for benzylic C–H bond oxidation.

Engineering iridium-based metal organic frameworks towards electrocatalytic water oxidation

Bipyridine-incorporated metal organic frameworks were used to fabricate solid iridium-bipyridine catalysts, which were coated onto the surface of a glassy carbon electrode and showed electrical water oxidation activity with the onset potential of 0.87 V versus NHE.

Highly active, separable and recyclable bipyridine iridium catalysts for C–H borylation reactions

Iridium complexes generated from Ir(i) precursors and PIB oligomer functionalized bpy ligands efficiently catalyzed the reaction of arenes with bis(pinacolato)diboron under mild conditions to produce a variety of arylboronate compounds.
