Tracking the picosecond deactivation dynamics of a photoexcited iron carbene complex by time-resolved X-ray scattering

Ultrafast Two-Color X-Ray Emission Spectroscopy Reveals Excited State Landscape in a Base Metal Dyad

Effective photoinduced charge transfer makes molecular bimetallic assemblies attractive for applications as active light-induced proton reduction systems. Developing competitive base metal dyads is mandatory for a more sustainable future. However, the electron transfer mechanisms from the photosensitizer to the proton reduction catalyst in base metal dyads remain so far unexplored. A Fe─Co dyad that exhibits photocatalytic H2 production activity is studied using femtosecond X-ray emission spectroscopy, complemented by ultrafast optical spectroscopy and theoretical time-dependent DFT calculations, to understand the electronic and structural dynamics after photoexcitation and during the subsequent charge transfer process from the FeII photosensitizer to the cobaloxime catalyst. This novel approach enables the simultaneous measurement of the transient X-ray emission at the iron and cobalt K-edges in a two-color experiment. With this methodology, the excited state dynamics are correlated to the electron transfer processes, and evidence of the Fe→Co electron transfer as an initial step of proton reduction activity is unraveled.

Deciphering Photoinduced Catalytic Reaction Mechanisms in Natural and Artificial Photosynthetic Systems on Multiple Temporal and Spatial Scales Using X-ray Probes

Utilization of renewable energies for catalytically generating value-added chemicals is highly desirable in this era of rising energy demands and climate change impacts. Artificial photosynthetic systems or photocatalysts utilize light to convert abundant CO2, H2O, and O2 to fuels, such as carbohydrates and hydrogen, thus converting light energy to storable chemical resources. The emergence of intense X-ray pulses from synchrotrons, ultrafast X-ray pulses from X-ray free electron lasers, and table-top laser-driven sources over the past decades opens new frontiers in deciphering photoinduced catalytic reaction mechanisms on the multiple temporal and spatial scales. Operando X-ray spectroscopic methods offer a new set of electronic transitions in probing the oxidation states, coordinating geometry, and spin states of the metal catalytic center and photosensitizers with unprecedented energy and time resolution. Operando X-ray scattering methods enable previously elusive reaction steps to be characterized on different length scales and time scales. The methodological progress and their application examples collected in this review will offer a glimpse into the accomplishments and current state in deciphering reaction mechanisms for both natural and synthetic systems. Looking forward, there are still many challenges and opportunities at the frontier of catalytic research that will require further advancement of the characterization techniques.

Photoredox matching of earth-abundant photosensitizers with hydrogen evolving catalysts by first-principles predictions

Photoredox properties of several earth-abundant light-harvesting transition metal complexes in combination with cobalt-based proton reduction catalysts have been investigated computationally to assess the fundamental viability of different photocatalytic systems of current experimental interest. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations using several GGA (BP86, BLYP), hybrid-GGA (B3LYP, B3LYP*), hybrid meta-GGA (M06, TPSSh), and range-separated hybrid (ωB97X, CAM-B3LYP) functionals were used to calculate relevant ground and excited state reduction potentials for photosensitizers, catalysts, and sacrificial electron donors. Linear energy correction factors for the DFT/TD-DFT results that provide the best agreement with available experimental reference results were determined in order to provide more accurate predictions. Among the selection of functionals, the B3LYP* and TPSSh sets of correction parameters were determined to give the best redox potentials and excited states energies, ΔEexc, with errors of ∼0.2 eV. Linear corrections for both reduction and oxidation processes significantly improve the predictions for all the redox pairs. In particular, for TPSSh and B3LYP*, the calculated errors decrease by more than 0.5 V against experimental values for catalyst reduction potentials, photosensitizer oxidation potentials, and electron donor oxidation potentials. Energy-corrected TPSSh results were finally used to predict the energetics of complete photocatalytic cycles for the light-driven activation of selected proton reduction cobalt catalysts. These predictions demonstrate the broader usefulness of the adopted approach to systematically predict full photocycle behavior for first-row transition metal photosensitizer-catalyst combinations more broadly.

Multifaceted Deactivation Dynamics of Fe(II) N-Heterocyclic Carbene Photosensitizers

Excited state dynamics of three iron(II) carbene complexes that serve as prototype Earth-abundant photosensitizers were investigated by ultrafast optical spectroscopy. Significant differences in the dynamics between the investigated complexes down to femtosecond time scales are used to characterize fundamental differences in the depopulation of triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (3MLCT) excited states in the presence of energetically accessible triplet metal-centered (3MC) states. Novel insights into the full deactivation cascades of the investigated complexes include evidence of the need to revise the deactivation model for a prominent iron carbene prototype complex, a refined understanding of complex 3MC dynamics, and a quantitative discrimination between activated and barrierless deactivation steps along the 3MLCT → 3MC → 1GS path. Overall, the study provides an improved understanding of photophysical limitations and opportunities for the use of iron(II)-based photosensitizers in photochemical applications.

Projection to extract the perpendicular component (PEPC) method for extracting kinetics from time-resolved data

Time-resolved x-ray liquidography (TRXL) is a potent method for investigating the structural dynamics of chemical and biological reactions in the liquid phase. It has enabled the extraction of detailed structural aspects of various dynamic processes, the molecular structures of intermediates, and kinetics of reactions across a wide range of systems, from small molecules to proteins and nanoparticles. Proper data analysis is key to extracting the information of the kinetics and structural dynamics of the studied system encrypted in the TRXL data. In typical TRXL data, the signals from solute scattering, solvent scattering, and solute-solvent cross scattering are mixed in the q-space, and the solute kinetics and solvent hydrodynamics are mixed in the time domain, thus complicating the data analysis. Various methods developed so far generally require prior knowledge of the molecular structures of candidate species involved in the reaction. Because such information is often unavailable, a typical data analysis often involves tedious trial and error. To remedy this situation, we have developed a method named projection to extract the perpendicular component (PEPC), capable of removing the contribution of solvent kinetics from TRXL data. The resulting data then contain only the solute kinetics, and, thus, the solute kinetics can be easily determined. Once the solute kinetics is determined, the subsequent data analysis to extract the structural information can be performed with drastically improved convenience. The application of the PEPC method is demonstrated with TRXL data from the photochemistry of two molecular systems: [Au(CN)₂^-]₃ in water and CHI₃ in cyclohexane.

Can range-separated functionals be optimally tuned to predict spectra and excited state dynamics in photoactive iron complexes?

Density functional theory is an efficient computational tool to investigate photophysical and photochemical processes in transition metal complexes, giving invaluable assistance in interpreting spectroscopic and catalytic experiments. Optimally tuned range-separated functionals are particularly promising, as they were created to address some of the fundamental deficiencies present in approximate exchange-correlation functionals. In this paper, we scrutinize the selection of optimally tuned parameters and its influence on the excited state dynamics, using the example of the iron complex [Fe(cpmp)₂]²⁺ with push-pull ligands. Various tuning strategies are contemplated based on pure self-consistent DFT protocols, as well as on the comparison with experimental spectra and multireference CASPT2 results. The two most promising sets of optimal parameters are then employed to carry out nonadiabatic surface-hopping dynamics simulations. Intriguingly, we find that the two sets lead to very different relaxation pathways and timescales. While the set of optimal parameters from one of the self-consistent DFT protocols predicts the formation of long-lived metal-to-ligand charge transfer triplet states, the set in better agreement with CASPT2 calculations leads to deactivation in the manifold of metal-centered states, in better agreement with the experimental reference data. These results showcase the complexity of iron-complex excited state landscapes and the difficulty of obtaining an unambiguous parametrization of long-range corrected functionals without experimental input.

Branching mechanism of photoswitching in an Fe(II) polypyridyl complex explained by full singlet-triplet-quintet dynamics

It has long been known that irradiation with visible light converts Fe(II) polypyridines from their low-spin (singlet) to high-spin (quintet) state, yet mechanistic interpretation of the photorelaxation remains controversial. Herein, we simulate the full singlet-triplet-quintet dynamics of the [Fe(terpy)₂]²⁺ (terpy = 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine) complex in full dimension, in order to clarify the complex photodynamics. Importantly, we report a branching mechanism involving two sequential processes: a dominant ³MLCT→³MC(³T_2g)→³MC(³T_1g)→⁵MC, and a minor ³MLCT→³MC(³T_2g)→⁵MC component. (MLCT = metal-to-ligand charge transfer, MC = metal-centered). While the direct ³MLCT→⁵MC mechanism is considered as a relevant alternative, we show that it could only be operative, and thus lead to competing pathways, in the absence of ³MC states. The quintet state is populated on the sub-picosecond timescale involving non-exponential dynamics and coherent Fe-N breathing oscillations. The results are in agreement with the available time-resolved experimental data on Fe(II) polypyridines, and fully describe the photorelaxation dynamics.

Pseudo-Octahedral Iron(II) Complexes with Near-Degenerate Charge Transfer and Ligand Field States at the Franck-Condon Geometry

Increasing the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited state lifetime of polypyridine iron(II) complexes can be achieved by lowering the ligand's π* orbital energy and by increasing the ligand field splitting. In the homo- and heteroleptic complexes [Fe(cpmp)₂ ]²⁺ (1²⁺ ) and [Fe(cpmp)(ddpd)]²⁺ (2²⁺ ) with the tridentate ligands 6,2''-carboxypyridyl-2,2'-methylamine-pyridyl-pyridine (cpmp) and N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-di-pyridin-2-ylpyridine-2,6-diamine (ddpd) two or one dipyridyl ketone moieties provide low energy π* acceptor orbitals. A good metal-ligand orbital overlap to increase the ligand field splitting is achieved by optimizing the octahedricity through CO and NMe units between the coordinating pyridines which enable the formation of six-membered chelate rings. The push-pull ligand cpmp provides intra-ligand and ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (ILCT, LL'CT) excited states in addition to MLCT excited states. Ground and excited state properties of 1²⁺ and 2²⁺ were accessed by X-ray diffraction analyses, resonance Raman spectroscopy, (spectro)electrochemistry, EPR spectroscopy, X-ray emission spectroscopy, static and time-resolved IR and UV/Vis/NIR absorption spectroscopy as well as quantum chemical calculations.

Resolving Femtosecond Solvent Reorganization Dynamics in an Iron Complex by Nonadiabatic Dynamics Simulations

The ultrafast dynamical response of solute–solvent interactions plays a key role in transition metal complexes, where charge transfer states are ubiquitous. Nonetheless, there exist very few excited-state simulations of transition metal complexes in solution. Here, we carry out a nonadiabatic dynamics study of the iron complex [Fe(CN)₄(bpy)]^2– (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) in explicit aqueous solution. Implicit solvation models were found inadequate for reproducing the strong solvatochromism in the absorption spectra. Instead, direct solute–solvent interactions, in the form of hydrogen bonds, are responsible for the large observed solvatochromic shift and the general dynamical behavior of the complex in water. The simulations reveal an overall intersystem crossing time scale of 0.21 ± 0.01 ps and a strong reliance of this process on nuclear motion. A charge transfer character analysis shows a branched decay mechanism from the initially excited singlet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (¹MLCT) states to triplet states of ³MLCT and metal-centered (³MC) character. We also find that solvent reorganization after excitation is ultrafast, on the order of 50 fs around the cyanides and slower around the bpy ligand. In contrast, the nuclear vibrational dynamics, in the form of Fe–ligand bond changes, takes place on slightly longer time scales. We demonstrate that the surprisingly fast solvent reorganizing should be observable in time-resolved X-ray solution scattering experiments, as simulated signals show strong contributions from the solute–solvent scattering cross term. Altogether, the simulations paint a comprehensive picture of the coupled and concurrent electronic, nuclear, and solvent dynamics and interactions in the first hundreds of femtoseconds after excitation.

Photoactivation of triosmium dodecacarbonyl at 400 nm probed with time-resolved X-ray liquidography

The photoactivation mechanism of Os₃(CO)₁₂ at 400 nm is examined with time-resolved X-ray liquidography. The data reveal two pathways: the vibrational relaxation following an internal conversion to the electronic ground state and the ligand dissociation to form Os₃(CO)₁₁ with a ligand vacancy at the axial position.

Toward Simulation of Fe(II) Low-Spin → High-Spin Photoswitching by Synergistic Spin-Vibronic Dynamics

A new theoretical approach is presented and applied for the simulation of Fe(II) low-spin (LS, singlet, t_2g⁶e_g⁰) → high-spin (HS, quintet, t_2g⁴e_g²) photoswitching dynamics of the octahedral model complex [Fe(NCH)₆]²⁺. The utilized synergistic methodology heavily exploits the strengths of complementary electronic structure and spin-vibronic dynamics methods. Specifically, we perform 3D quantum dynamics (QD) and full-dimensional trajectory surface hopping (TSH, in conjunction with a linear vibronic coupling model), with the modes for QD selected by TSH. We follow a hybrid approach which is based on the application of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) excited-state potential energy surfaces (PESs) and multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2) spin–orbit couplings (SOCs). Our method delivers accurate singlet–triplet–quintet intersystem crossing (ISC) dynamics, as assessed by comparison to our recent high-level ab initio simulations and related time-resolved experimental data. Furthermore, we investigate the capability of our simulations to identify the location of ISCs. Finally, we assess the approximation of constant SOCs (calculated at the Franck–Condon geometry), whose validity has central importance for the combination of TD-DFT PESs and CASPT2 SOCs. This efficient methodology will have a key role in simulating LS → HS dynamics for more complicated cases, involving higher density of states and varying electronic character, as well as the analysis of ultrafast experiments.

Quantifying the Steric Effect on Metal-Ligand Bonding in Fe Carbene Photosensitizers with Fe 2p3d Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Understanding the electronic structure and chemical bonding of transition metal complexes is important for improving the function of molecular photosensitizers and catalysts. We have utilized X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Fe L₃ edge to investigate the electronic structure of two Fe N-heterocyclic carbene complexes with similar chemical structures but different steric effects and contrasting excited-state dynamics: [Fe(bmip)₂]²⁺ and [Fe(btbip)₂]²⁺, bmip = 2,6-bis(3-methyl-imidazole-1-ylidine)pyridine and btbip = 2,6-bis(3-tert-butyl-imidazole-1-ylidene)pyridine. In combination with charge transfer multiplet and ab initio calculations, we quantified how changes in Fe-carbene bond length due to steric effects modify the metal-ligand bonding, including σ/π donation and π back-donation. We find that σ donation is significantly stronger in [Fe(bmip)₂]²⁺, whereas the π back-donation is similar in both complexes. The resulting stronger ligand field and nephelauxetic effect in [Fe(bmip)₂]²⁺ lead to approximately 1 eV destabilization of the quintet metal-centered ⁵T_2g excited state compared to [Fe(btbip)₂]²⁺, providing an explanation for the absence of a photoinduced ⁵T_2g population and a longer metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited-state lifetime in [Fe(bmip)₂]²⁺. This work demonstrates how combined modeling of XAS and RIXS spectra can be utilized to understand the electronic structure of transition metal complexes governed by correlated electrons and donation/back-donation interactions.

Reaction dynamics studied via femtosecond X-ray liquidography at X-ray free-electron lasers

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) provide femtosecond X-ray pulses suitable for pump–probe time-resolved studies with a femtosecond time resolution. Since the advent of the first XFEL in 2009, recent years have witnessed a great number of applications with various pump–probe techniques at XFELs. Among these, time-resolved X-ray liquidography (TRXL) is a powerful method for visualizing structural dynamics in the liquid solution phase. Here, we classify various chemical and biological molecular systems studied via femtosecond TRXL (fs-TRXL) at XFELs, depending on the focus of the studied process, into (i) bond cleavage and formation, (ii) charge distribution and electron transfer, (iii) orientational dynamics, (iv) solvation dynamics, (v) coherent nuclear wavepacket dynamics, and (vi) protein structural dynamics, and provide a brief review on each category. We also lay out a plausible roadmap for future fs-TRXL studies for areas that have not been explored yet.

Pyrene-Decoration of a Chromium(0) Tris(diisocyanide) Enhances Excited State Delocalization: A Strategy to Improve the Photoluminescence of 3d6 Metal Complexes

There is a long-standing interest in iron(II) complexes that emit from metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited states, analogous to ruthenium(II) polypyridines. The 3d⁶ electrons of iron(II) are exposed to a relatively weak ligand field, rendering nonradiative relaxation of MLCT states via metal-centered excited states undesirably efficient. For isoelectronic chromium(0), chelating diisocyanide ligands recently provided access to very weak MLCT emission in solution at room temperature. Here, we present a concept that boosts the luminescence quantum yield of a chromium(0) isocyanide complex by nearly 2 orders of magnitude, accompanied by a significant increase of the MLCT lifetime. Pyrene units in the diisocyanide ligand backbone lead to an enlarged π-conjugation system and to a strongly delocalized MLCT state, from which nonradiative relaxation is less dominant despite a sizable redshift of the emission. While the pyrene moiety is electronically coupled to the core of the chromium(0) complex in the excited state, UV-vis absorption and 2D NMR spectroscopy show that this is not the case in the ground state. Luminescence lifetimes and quantum yields for our pyrenyl-decorated chromium(0) complex exhibit an unusual bell-shaped dependence on solvent polarity, indicative of two counteracting effects governing the MLCT deactivation. These two effects are identified as predominant deactivation either through an energetically nearby lying metal-centered state in the most apolar solvents, or alternatively via direct nonradiative relaxation to the ground state following the energy gap law in more polar solvents. This is the first example of a 3d⁶ MLCT emitter to benefit from an increased π-conjugation network.

Filming ultrafast roaming-mediated isomerization of bismuth triiodide in solution

Roaming reaction, defined as a reaction yielding products via reorientational motion in the long-range region (3 - 8 Å) of the potential, is a relatively recently proposed reaction pathway and is now regarded as a universal mechanism that can explain the unimolecular dissociation and isomerization of various molecules. The structural movements of the partially dissociated fragments originating from the frustrated bond fission at the onset of roaming, however, have been explored mostly via theoretical simulations and rarely observed experimentally. Here, we report an investigation of the structural dynamics during a roaming-mediated isomerization reaction of bismuth triiodide (BiI₃) in acetonitrile solution using femtosecond time-resolved x-ray liquidography. Structural analysis of the data visualizes the atomic movements during the roaming-mediated isomerization process including the opening of the Bi-I_b-I_c angle and the closing of I_a-Bi-I_b-I_c dihedral angle, each by ~40°, as well as the shortening of the I_b···I_c distance, following the frustrated bond fission.

Femtosecond Charge Density Modulations in Photoexcited CuWO4

Copper tungstate (CuWO4) is an important semiconductor with a sophisticated and debatable electronic structure that has a direct impact on its chemistry. Using the PAL-XFEL source, we study the electronic dynamics of photoexcited CuWO4. The Cu L3 X-ray absorption spectrum shifts to lower energy upon photoexcitation, which implies that the photoexcitation process from the oxygen valence band to the tungsten conduction band effectively increases the charge density on the Cu atoms. The decay time of this spectral change is 400 fs indicating that the increased charge density exists only for a very short time and relaxes electronically. The initial increased charge density gives rise to a structural change on a time scale longer than 200 ps.

Quantum-chemistry-aided ligand engineering for potential molecular switches: changing barriers to tune excited state lifetimes

Substitution of terpyridine at the 4' position with electron withdrawing and donating groups is used to tune the quintet lifetime of its iron(ii) complex. DFT calculations suggest that the energy barrier between the quintet and singlet states can be altered significantly upon substitution, inducing a large variation of the lifetime of the photoexcited quintet state. This prediction was experimentally verified by transient optical absorption spectroscopy and good agreement with the trend expected from the calculations was found. This demonstrates that the potential energy landscape can indeed be rationally tailored by relevant modifications based on DFT predictions. This result should pave the way to advancing efficient theory-based ligand engineering of functional molecules to a wide range of applications.

Intersystem Crossing and Triplet Dynamics in an Iron(II) N-Heterocyclic Carbene Photosensitizer

The electronic excited states of the iron(II) complex [Fe^II(tpy)(pyz-NHC)]²⁺ [tpy = 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine; pyz-NHC = 1,1′-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)pyrazinyldiimidazolium-2,2′-diylidene] and their relaxation pathways have been theoretically investigated. To this purpose, trajectory surface-hopping simulations within a linear vibronic coupling model including a 244-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) with 20 singlet and 20 triplet coupled states have been used. The simulations show that, after excitation to the lowest-energy absorption band of predominant metal-to-ligand charge-transfer character involving the tpy ligand, almost 80% of the population undergoes intersystem crossing to the triplet manifold in about 50 fs, while the remaining 20% decays through internal conversion to the electronic ground state in about 300 fs. The population transferred to the triplet states is found to deactivate into two different regions of the PESs, one where the static dipole moment is small and shows increased metal-centered character and another with a large static dipole moment, where the electron density is transferred from the tpy to pyz-NHC ligand. Coherent oscillations of 400 fs are observed between these two sets of triplet populations, until the mixture equilibrates to a ratio of 60:40. Finally, the importance of selecting suitable normal modes is highlighted—a choice that can be far from straightforward in transition-metal complexes with hundreds of degrees of freedom.

Trajectory surface-hopping simulations with a linear vibronic coupling model reveal the competition of major intersystem crossing versus minor internal conversion dynamics in an iron(II) N-heterocyclic carbene dye. The triplet population bifurcates into two regions of the potential energy surfaces, characterized by small and large static dipole moments due to different electronic character and showing coherent oscillations of 400 fs until both triplet populations coexist in a mixture of 60:40.

Origin of core-to-core x-ray emission spectroscopy sensitivity to structural dynamics

Recently, coherent structural dynamics in the excited state of an iron photosensitizer was observed through oscillations in the intensity of Kα x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES). Understanding the origin of the unexpected sensitivity of core-to-core transitions to structural dynamics is important for further development of femtosecond time-resolved XES methods and, we believe, generally necessary for interpretation of XES signals from highly non-equilibrium structures that are ubiquitous in photophysics and photochemistry. Here, we use multiconfigurational wavefunction calculations combined with atomic theory to analyze the emission process in detail. The sensitivity of core-to-core transitions to structural dynamics is due to a shift of the minimum energy metal-ligand bond distance between 1s and 2p core-hole states. A key effect is the additional contraction of the non-bonding 3s and 3p orbitals in 1s core-hole states, which decreases electron-electron repulsion and increases overlap in the metal-ligand bonds. The effect is believed to be general and especially pronounced for systems with strong bonds. The important role of 3s and 3p orbitals is consistent with the analysis of radial charge and spin densities and can be connected to the negative chemical shift observed for many transition metal complexes. The XES sensitivity to structural dynamics can be optimized by tuning the emission energy spectrometer, with oscillations up to ±4% of the maximum intensity for the current system. The theoretical predictions can be used to design experiments that separate electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom in ultrafast excited state dynamics.

Integrating solvation shell structure in experimentally driven molecular dynamics using x-ray solution scattering data

In the past few decades, prediction of macromolecular structures beyond the native conformation has been aided by the development of molecular dynamics (MD) protocols aimed at exploration of the energetic landscape of proteins. Yet, the computed structures do not always agree with experimental observables, calling for further development of the MD strategies to bring the computations and experiments closer together. Here, we report a scalable, efficient MD simulation approach that incorporates an x-ray solution scattering signal as a driving force for the conformational search of stable structural configurations outside of the native basin. We further demonstrate the importance of inclusion of the hydration layer effect for a precise description of the processes involving large changes in the solvent exposed area, such as unfolding. Utilization of the graphics processing unit allows for an efficient all-atom calculation of scattering patterns on-the-fly, even for large biomolecules, resulting in a speed-up of the calculation of the associated driving force. The utility of the methodology is demonstrated on two model protein systems, the structural transition of lysine-, arginine-, ornithine-binding protein and the folding of deca-alanine. We discuss how the present approach will aid in the interpretation of dynamical scattering experiments on protein folding and association.

Estimating signal and noise of time-resolved X-ray solution scattering data at synchrotrons and XFELs

Elucidating the structural dynamics of small molecules and proteins in the liquid solution phase is essential to ensure a fundamental understanding of their reaction mechanisms. In this regard, time-resolved X-ray solution scattering (TRXSS), also known as time-resolved X-ray liquidography (TRXL), has been established as a powerful technique for obtaining the structural information of reaction intermediates and products in the liquid solution phase and is expected to be applied to a wider range of molecules in the future. A TRXL experiment is generally performed at the beamline of a synchrotron or an X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) to provide intense and short X-ray pulses. Considering the limited opportunities to use these facilities, it is necessary to verify the plausibility of a target experiment prior to the actual experiment. For this purpose, a program has been developed, referred to as S-cube, which is short for a Solution Scattering Simulator. This code allows the routine estimation of the shape and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of TRXL data from known experimental parameters. Specifically, S-cube calculates the difference scattering curve and the associated quantum noise on the basis of the molecular structure of the target reactant and product, the target solvent, the energy of the pump laser pulse and the specifications of the beamline to be used. Employing a simplified form for the pair-distribution function required to calculate the solute-solvent cross term greatly increases the calculation speed as compared with a typical TRXL data analysis. Demonstrative applications of S-cube are presented, including the estimation of the expected TRXL data and SNR level for the future LCLS-II HE beamlines.

Revealing the initial steps in homogeneous photocatalysis by time-resolved spectroscopy

Photocatalysis attracts currently intense research since it can provide efficient routes for generating solar fuels and allows to apply sunlight for an environmentally friendly synthesis of valuable chemical compounds. Accordingly, in future photocatalysis may contribute significantly to a sustainable economy. However, up to now photocatalysis has made it only into some niche applications. The reasons are manifold including too low yields, insufficient stability, and scarce availability of the precious metals and rare earths used in most cases. The design of better systems is the goal of many research activities. They call for a detailed knowledge of the individual steps and the microscopic mechanisms. Time-resolved spectroscopy is a powerful tool to improve our understanding of the individual steps of a photocatalytic process and of the efficiencies and losses associated with them. This allows to address specific weaknesses of the components of a photocatalytic system and to pursue a rational design of the corresponding compounds. In this review an overview is given about what insights can be gained by time-resolved spectroscopy referring mostly to our own results while it has to be stressed that many other groups are also highly successfully working in this area. We restrict ourselves to homogeneous systems which are often easier to analyze and focus on the primary steps occurring after optical excitation. This includes intramolecular relaxation and intersystem crossing in the photosensitizer as well as the first electron transfer step resulting from the interaction of the sensitizer with other components of the system. Ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy turns out to be particularly helpful in analyzing new photosensitizers based on abundant metals, i.e. copper and iron. These sensitizers can suffer from short lifetimes of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer states which are typically involved in the intermolecular charge transfer processes. The latter are investigated on the pico- to microsecond timescale by quenching experiments making use of a streak camera and by pump-probe spectroscopy applying a YAG-laser system for excitation. The experiments with the streak camera allow to discriminate between oxidative and reductive pathways and to determine the corresponding bimolecular quenching rates which are compared to their diffusion limit to obtain a measure for the quenching efficiency. By applying transient absorption spectroscopy, it is furthermore possible to observe appearing charge transfer products and to determine their concentrations. In this way the efficiency of the electron transfer itself can be deduced and the relevance of lossy quenching events can be estimated.

Photophysics and Photochemistry of Iron Carbene Complexes for Solar Energy Conversion and Photocatalysis

Earth-abundant first row transition metal complexes are important for the development of large-scale photocatalytic and solar energy conversion applications. Coordination compounds based on iron are especially interesting, as iron is the most common transition metal element in the Earth’s crust. Unfortunately, iron-polypyridyl and related traditional iron-based complexes generally suffer from poor excited state properties, including short excited-state lifetimes, that make them unsuitable for most light-driven applications. Iron carbene complexes have emerged in the last decade as a new class of coordination compounds with significantly improved photophysical and photochemical properties, that make them attractive candidates for a range of light-driven applications. Specific aspects of the photophysics and photochemistry of these iron carbenes discussed here include long-lived excited state lifetimes of charge transfer excited states, capabilities to act as photosensitizers in solar energy conversion applications like dye-sensitized solar cells, as well as recent demonstrations of promising progress towards driving photoredox and photocatalytic processes. Complementary advances towards photofunctional systems with both Fe(II) complexes featuring metal-to-ligand charge transfer excited states, and Fe(III) complexes displaying ligand-to-metal charge transfer excited states are discussed. Finally, we outline emerging opportunities to utilize the improved photochemical properties of iron carbenes and related complexes for photovoltaic, photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic applications.

Site-Selective Orbital Interactions in an Ultrathin Iron-Carbene Photosensitizer Film

We present the first experimental study of the frontier orbitals in an ultrathin film of the novel hexa-carbene photosensitizer [Fe(btz)₃]³⁺, where btz is 3,3'-dimethyl-1,1'-bis(p-tolyl)-4,4'-bis(1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene). Resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (RPES) was used to probe the electronic structure of films where the molecular and oxidative integrities had been confirmed with optical and X-ray spectroscopies. In combination with density functional theory calculations, RPES measurements provided direct and site-selective information about localization and interactions of occupied and unoccupied molecular orbitals. Fe 2p, N 1s, and C 1s measurements selectively probed the metal, carbene, and side-group contributions revealing strong metal-ligand orbital mixing of the frontier orbitals. This helps explain the remarkable photophysical properties of iron-carbenes in terms of unconventional electronic structure properties and favorable metal-ligand bonding interactions-important for the continued development of these type of complexes toward light-harvesting and light-emitting applications.

Ultrafast X-ray Photochemistry at European XFEL: Capabilities of the Femtosecond X-ray Experiments (FXE) Instrument

Time-resolved X-ray methods are widely used for monitoring transient intermediates over the course of photochemical reactions. Ultrafast X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies as well as elastic X-ray scattering deliver detailed electronic and structural information on chemical dynamics in the solution phase. In this work, we describe the opportunities at the Femtosecond X-ray Experiments (FXE) instrument of European XFEL. Guided by the idea of combining spectroscopic and scattering techniques in one experiment, the FXE instrument has completed the initial commissioning phase for most of its components and performed first successful experiments within the baseline capabilities. This is demonstrated by its currently 115 fs (FWHM) temporal resolution to acquire ultrafast X-ray emission spectra by simultaneously recording iron Kα and Kβ lines, next to wide angle X-ray scattering patterns on a photoexcited aqueous solution of [Fe(bpy)3]2+, a transition metal model compound.

Vibrational wavepacket dynamics in Fe carbene photosensitizer determined with femtosecond X-ray emission and scattering

The non-equilibrium dynamics of electrons and nuclei govern the function of photoactive materials. Disentangling these dynamics remains a critical goal for understanding photoactive materials. Here we investigate the photoinduced dynamics of the [Fe(bmip)2]2+ photosensitizer, where bmip = 2,6-bis(3-methyl-imidazole-1-ylidine)-pyridine, with simultaneous femtosecond-resolution Fe Kα and Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and X-ray solution scattering (XSS). This measurement shows temporal oscillations in the XES and XSS difference signals with the same 278 fs period oscillation. These oscillations originate from an Fe-ligand stretching vibrational wavepacket on a triplet metal-centered (3MC) excited state surface. This 3MC state is populated with a 110 fs time constant by 40% of the excited molecules while the rest relax to a 3MLCT excited state. The sensitivity of the Kα XES to molecular structure results from a 0.7% average Fe-ligand bond length shift between the 1 s and 2p core-ionized states surfaces.

Design and Synthesis of Photoactive Iron N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes

The use of iron in photoactive metal complexes has been investigated for decades. In this respect, the charge transfer (CT) states are of particular interest, since they are usually responsible for the photofunctionality of such compounds. However, only recently breakthroughs have been made in extending CT excited state lifetimes that are notoriously short-lived in classical polypyridine iron coordination compounds. This success is in large parts owed to the use of strongly σ-donating N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands that help manipulating the photophysical and photochemical properties of iron complexes. In this review we aim to map out the basic design principles for the generation of photofunctional iron NHC complexes, summarize the progress made so far and recapitulate on the synthetic methods used. Further, we want to highlight the challenges still existing and give inspiration for future generations of photoactive iron complexes.

Short- and Long-Range Solvation Effects on the Transient UV-Vis Absorption Spectra of a Ru(II)-Polypyridine Complex Disentangled by Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics

Evidence of subtle effects in the dynamic reorganization of a protic solvent in its first- and farther-neighbor shells, in response to the sudden change in the solute's electronic distribution upon excitation, is unveiled by a multilevel computational approach. Through the combination of nonequilibrium molecular dynamics and quantum mechanical calculations, the experimental time evolution of the transient T₁ absorption spectra of a heteroleptic Ru(II)-polypyridine complex in ethanol or dimethyl sulfoxide solution is reproduced and rationalized in terms of both fast and slow solvent re-equilibration processes, which are found responsible for the red shift and broadening experimentally observed only in the protic medium. Solvent orientational correlation functions and a time-dependent analysis of the solvation structure confirm that the initial, fast observed red shift can be traced back to the destruction-formation of hydrogen bond networks in the first-neighbor shell, whereas the subsequent shift, evident in the [20-500] ps range and accompanied by a large broadening of the signal, is connected to a collective reorientation of the second and farther solvation shells, which significantly changes the electrostatic embedding felt by the excited solute.

Recent advances in ultrafast X-ray sources

Over more than a century, X-rays have transformed our understanding of the fundamental structure of matter and have been an indispensable tool for chemistry, physics, biology, materials science and related fields. Recent advances in ultrafast X-ray sources operating in the femtosecond to attosecond regimes have opened an important new frontier in X-ray science. These advances now enable: (i) sensitive probing of structural dynamics in matter on the fundamental timescales of atomic motion, (ii) element-specific probing of electronic structure and charge dynamics on fundamental timescales of electronic motion, and (iii) powerful new approaches for unravelling the coupling between electronic and atomic structural dynamics that underpin the properties and function of matter. Most notable is the recent realization of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) with numerous new XFEL facilities in operation or under development worldwide. Advances in XFELs are complemented by advances in synchrotron-based and table-top laser-plasma X-ray sources now operating in the femtosecond regime, and laser-based high-order harmonic XUV sources operating in the attosecond regime. Finding intersections between electronic excited state potential energy surfaces with simultaneous ultrafast X-ray scattering and spectroscopy

Combined X-ray free-electron laser techniques pinpoints loci of intersections between potential energy surfaces of a photo-excited 3d transition-metal centered molecule.

Light-driven molecular reactions are dictated by the excited state potential energy landscape, depending critically on the location of conical intersections and intersystem crossing points between potential surfaces where non-adiabatic effects govern transition probabilities between distinct electronic states. While ultrafast studies have provided significant insight into electronic excited state reaction dynamics, experimental approaches for identifying and characterizing intersections and seams between electronic states remain highly system dependent. Here we show that for 3d transition metal systems simultaneously recorded X-ray diffuse scattering and X-ray emission spectroscopy at sub-70 femtosecond time-resolution provide a solid experimental foundation for determining the mechanistic details of excited state reactions. In modeling the mechanistic information retrieved from such experiments, it becomes possible to identify the dominant trajectory followed during the excited state cascade and to determine the relevant loci of intersections between states. We illustrate our approach by explicitly mapping parts of the potential energy landscape dictating the light driven low-to-high spin-state transition (spin crossover) of [Fe(2,2′-bipyridine)₃]²⁺, where the strongly coupled nuclear and electronic dynamics have been a source of interest and controversy. We anticipate that simultaneous X-ray diffuse scattering and X-ray emission spectroscopy will provide a valuable approach for mapping the reactive trajectories of light-triggered molecular systems involving 3d transition metals.

Ultrafast X-Ray Scattering Measurements of Coherent Structural Dynamics on the Ground-State Potential Energy Surface of a Diplatinum Molecule

We report x-ray free electron laser experiments addressing ground-state structural dynamics of the diplatinum anion Pt_{2}POP_{4} following photoexcitation. The structural dynamics are tracked with <100  fs time resolution by x-ray scattering, utilizing the anisotropic component to suppress contributions from the bulk solvent. The x-ray data exhibit a strong oscillatory component with period 0.28 ps and decay time 2.2 ps, and structural analysis of the difference signal directly shows this as arising from ground-state dynamics along the PtPt coordinate. These results are compared with multiscale Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations and demonstrate how off-resonance excitation can be used to prepare a vibrationally cold excited-state population complemented by a structure-dependent depletion of the ground-state population which subsequently evolves in time, allowing direct tracking of ground-state structural dynamics.

Exploring the potential of iron to replace ruthenium in photosensitizers: a computational study

In an effort to replace the widely used ruthenium metal complexes with low-cost, earth abundant iron complexes as photosensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) applications, herein we report the computational design of heteroleptic iron complexes (FC1-3) coordinated with benzimidazole-phenylcarbene (C^N) ligands. DFT and TDDFT calculations predicted the stronger σ-donating and π-accepting nature of phenyl carbene ligands substituted with electron-withdrawing CF₃, donating -N(CH₃)₂, and benzothiazine annulation than the imidazole carbene ligands (FC4); consequently, the metal-ligand bond distances and interactions that influence the ordering of charge transfer states with respect to metal centered states are altered in FC1-3 complexes. Detailed analysis based on energy decomposition analysis, spin density distribution analysis, and ab initio ligand field theory parameters were enabled to understand the nature of heteroleptic ligand interactions with the rest of the metal complex. The results from the study shed light on the judicious choice of ligands, as the same non-innocent ligand that is experimentally proven as favorable for Ru-dyes (TC1) is found to be detrimental for Fe-dyes (FC1). Among the complexes studied, the FC3 complex is a promising sensitizer for DSSC with ^1,3MLCT energy level well separated from ^3,5MC, thereby preventing the deactivation of MLCT. The outcome of the study is therefore an important step toward the development of photosensitizers based on iron metal. Photoactive Complexes with Earth-Abundant Metals

In this invited Perspective, recent developments and possible future directions of research on photoactive coordination compounds made from nonprecious transition metal elements will be discussed. The focus is on conceptually new, structurally well-characterized complexes with excited-state lifetimes between 10 ps and 1 ms in fluid solution for possible applications in photosensitizing, light-harvesting, luminescence and catalysis. The key metal elements considered herein are Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Zr, Mo, W and Ce in various oxidation states equipped with diverse ligands, giving access to long-lived excited states via a range of fundamentally different types of electronic transitions. Research performed in this area over the past five years demonstrated that a much broader spectrum of metal complexes than what was long considered relevant exhibits useful photophysics and photochemistry.
