Hidden scale invariance in the Gay-Berne model. II. Smectic-B phase

This paper complements a previous study of the isotropic and nematic phases of the Gay-Berne liquid-crystal model [Mehri et al., Phys. Rev. E 105, 064703 (2022)2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.105.064703] with a study of its smectic-B phase found at high density and low temperatures. We find also in this phase strong correlations between the virial and potential-energy thermal fluctuations, reflecting hidden scale invariance and implying the existence of isomorphs. The predicted approximate isomorph invariance of the physics is confirmed by simulations of the standard and orientational radial distribution functions, the mean-square displacement as a function of time, and the force, torque, velocity, angular velocity, and orientational time-autocorrelation functions. The regions of the Gay-Berne model that are relevant for liquid-crystal experiments can thus fully be simplified via the isomorph theory.

Effect of sample height and particle elongation in the sedimentation of colloidal rods

We study theoretically the effect of a gravitational field on the equilibrium behaviour of a colloidal suspension of rods with different length-to-width aspect ratios. The bulk phases of the system are described with analytical equations of state. The gravitational field is then incorporated via sedimentation path theory, which assumes a local equilibrium condition at each altitude of the sample. The bulk phenomenology is significantly enriched by the presence of the gravitational field. In a suspension of elongated rods with five stable phases in bulk, the gravitational field stabilizes up to fifteen different stacking sequences. The sample height has a non-trivial effect on the stable stacking sequence. New layers of distinct bulk phases appear either at the top, at the bottom, or simultaneously at the top and the bottom when increasing the sample height at constant colloidal concentration. We also study sedimentation in a mass-polydisperse suspension in which all rods have the same shape but different buoyant masses.

Hidden scale invariance in the Gay-Berne model

This paper presents a numerical study of the Gay-Berne liquid crystal model with parameters corresponding to calamitic (rod-shaped) molecules. The focus is on the isotropic and nematic phases at temperatures above unity, where we find strong correlations between the virial and potential-energy thermal fluctuations, reflecting the hidden scale invariance symmetry. This implies the existence of isomorphs, which are curves in the thermodynamic phase diagram of approximately invariant physics. We study numerically one isomorph in the isotropic phase and one in the nematic phase. In both cases, good invariance of the dynamics is demonstrated via data for the mean-square displacement and the reduced-unit time-autocorrelation functions of the velocity, angular velocity, force, torque, and first- and second-order Legendre polynomial orientational order parameters. Deviations from isomorph invariance are observed at short times for the orientational time-autocorrelation functions, which reflects the fact that the moment of inertia is assumed to be constant and thus not isomorph-invariant in reduced units. Structural isomorph invariance is demonstrated from data for the radial distribution functions of the molecules and their orientations. For comparison, all quantities were also simulated along an isochore of similar temperature variation, in which case invariance is not observed. We conclude that the thermodynamic phase diagram of the calamitic Gay-Berne model is essentially one-dimensional in the studied regions as predicted by isomorph theory, a fact that potentially allows for simplifications of future theories and numerical studies.

Postsynthesis Self- And Coassembly of Enzymatically Produced Fluorinated Cellodextrins and Cellulose Nanocrystals

The design of new functional materials and devices substantially relies on self-assembly of hierarchical structures. Formation of 2D platelets is known in the enzymatic synthesis of cellulose-like polymers. Here we demonstrate the feasibility of postsynthesis assembly of novel fluorinated cellodextrins. Highly ordered 2D structures of large lateral dimensions, unattainable in the polymerization process, can be formed because of postsynthesis assembly of the cellodextrins. These cellodextrins were also involved in coassembly with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) leading to hybrid systems. The hybrid architectures obtained depend on the content of fluorine atoms in the fluorinated cellodextrins. Monofluorinated cellodextrins coassemble with CNCs into a nanoweb, while multifluorinated cellodextrins assemble around the CNCs.

Growth transitions and critical behavior in the non-equilibrium aggregation of short, patchy nanorods

We have carried out Monte Carlo simulations to study the non-equilibrium aggregation of short patchy nanorods in two dimensions. Below a critical value of patch size ([Formula: see text]), the aggregates have finite sizes with small radii of gyration, [Formula: see text]. At [Formula: see text], the average radius of gyration shows a power law increase with time such that [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text]. Above, [Formula: see text], the aggregates are fractal in nature and their fractal dimension depends on the value of patch size. These morphological differences are due to the fact that below the critical value of patch size ([Formula: see text]), the growth of the clusters is suppressed and the system reaches an 'absorbed state.' Above [Formula: see text], the system reaches an 'active state,' in which the cluster size keeps growing with a fixed rate at long times. Thus, the system encounters a non-equilibrium phase transition. Close to the transition, the growth rate scales as [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text]. The long-time growth rate varies as [Formula: see text] where [Formula: see text]. These scaling exponents indicate that the transition belongs to the directed percolation universality class. The patchy nanorods also display a threshold patch size ([Formula: see text]), beyond which the long-time growth rate remains constant. We present geometric arguments for the existence of [Formula: see text]. The fractal dimension of the aggregates increases from 1.75, at [Formula: see text], to 1.81, at [Formula: see text]. It remains constant beyond [Formula: see text].
