Is Graphene Shortening the Path toward Spinal Cord Regeneration?

Along with the development of the next generation of biomedical platforms, the inclusion of graphene-based materials (GBMs) into therapeutics for spinal cord injury (SCI) has potential to nourish topmost neuroprotective and neuroregenerative strategies for enhancing neural structural and physiological recovery. In the context of SCI, contemplated as one of the most convoluted challenges of modern medicine, this review first provides an overview of its characteristics and pathophysiological features. Then, the most relevant ongoing clinical trials targeting SCI, including pharmaceutical, robotics/neuromodulation, and scaffolding approaches, are introduced and discussed in sequence with the most important insights brought by GBMs into each particular topic. The current role of these nanomaterials on restoring the spinal cord microenvironment after injury is critically contextualized, while proposing future concepts and desirable outputs for graphene-based technologies aiming to reach clinical significance for SCI.

Optimization of the Urea Removal in a Wearable Dialysis Device Using Nitrogen-Doped and Phosphorus-Doped Graphene

Dialysis has been recognized as an essential treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This therapy, however, suffers from several limitations leading to numerous complications in the patients. As dialysis cannot completely substitute healthy kidney functions, the health condition of an ESRD patient is ultimately affected. Wearable artificial kidney (WAK) can resolve the restrictions of blood purification by the dialysis method. However, absorbing large amounts of urea produced in the body is one of the main challenges of these WAK and overcoming this is necessary to improve both functionality and footprint of the device. This study investigates the adsorption capabilities of N- and P-doped graphene nanosorbents for the first time by using molecular dynamic simulation. Urea removal on carbon nanosheets was simulated with different percentages of phosphorus and nitrogen dopants along with the pristine graphene. Specifically, the effects of interaction energy, adsorption percentage, gyration radius, hydrogen bonding, and other molecular dynamic analyses on urea removal were also investigated. The results from this study match well with the existing research, demonstrating the accuracy of the model. The results further suggest that graphene nanosheets doped by 10% nitrogen are likely the most effective in removing urea given that it is associated with the maximum radial distribution function (RDF), the maximum reduction in gyration radius, a high number of hydrogen bonds, and the most negative adsorption energy. This molecular study offers attractive suggestions for the novel adsorbents of artificial kidney devices and paves the way for the development of novel and enhanced urea adsorbents.

Nanoscale layer of a minimized defect area of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride on copper for excellent anti-corrosion activity

In this work, we synthesized a monolayer of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) using chemical vapor deposition. The physicochemical and electrochemical properties of the materials were evaluated to determine their morphology. High-purity materials and their atomic-scale coating on copper (Cu) foil were employed to prevent fast degradation rate. The hexagonal two-dimensional (2D) atomic structures of the as-prepared materials were assessed to derive their best anti-corrosion behavior. The material prepared under optimized conditions included edge-defect-free graphene nanosheets (∼0.0034μm²) and hBN (∼0.0038μm²) per unit area of 1μm². The coating of each material on the Cu surface significantly reduced the corrosion rate, which was ∼2.44 × 10^-2/year and 6.57 × 10^-3/year for graphene/Cu and hBN/Cu, respectively. Importantly, the corrosion rate of Cu was approximately 3-fold lower after coating with hBN relative to that of graphene/Cu. This approach suggests that the surface coating of Cu using cost-effective, eco-friendly, and the most abundant materials in nature is of interest for developing marine anti-corrosion micro-electronic devices and achieving surface modification of pure metals in industrial applications.

Hemostatic nanotechnologies for external and internal hemorrhage management

An uncontrolled hemorrhage can easily lead to death during surgery and military operations. Despite the significant advances in hemostatic research, there is still an urgent and increasing need for safer and more effective hemostatic materials. Recently, nanotechnologies have been receiving increasing interest owing to their unique advantages and have been propelling the developement of hemostatic materials. This review summarizes the fundamentals of hemostasis and emphasizes the recent developments regarding hemorrhage-related hemostatic nanotechnologies. In terms of external accessible hemorrhage management, natural and synthetic polymers and inorganic components that have been used in traditional hemostats provide novel nanoscale solutions. Regarding internal noncompressible hemorrhage management, current research endeavors are dedicated to the development of substitutes for blood components, and nanoformulated hemostatic drugs. This review also briefly discusses the main and persistent problems of hemostatic nanomaterials, including safety concerns and clinical translation challenges. This review is hoped to provide critical insight into hemostatic nanomaterial development.

Side-chain effects on the co-existence of emergent nanopatterns in amino acid adlayers on graphene

The spontaneous tendency of amino acid adlayers to self-assemble into ordered patterns on non-reactive surfaces is thought to be chiefly influenced by amino acid termination state. Experiments have shown that different side chains can produce different patterns, with a distinction drawn between side chains that can support hydrogen bonds or electrostatic interactions, and those that are hydrophobic. However, as is demonstrated in this work, this distinction is not clear cut, implying that there is currently no way to predict in advance what type of pattern will be formed. Here, we use molecular dynamics simulations of amino acid adlayers in neutral, zwitterion, and neutral-zwitterion states for two types of amino acids, either histidine or alanine, adsorbed at the in-vacuo graphene interface. In contrast to earlier studies on adlayers of tryptophan and methionine on graphene that reveal the presence of only a single type of pattern motif, the canonical dimer row, here we find that emergent patterns of histidine and alanine adlayers supported the co-existence of several different types of motifs, influenced by the different side-chain characteristics. For alanine, the compact side-chain does not support hydrogen bonding and engages weakly with the surface, leading to the emergence of a new dimer row configuration in addition to the canonical dimer row motif. On the contrary, for histidine, the side-chain supports hydrogen bonding, leading to the emergence of a dimer row motif different from the canonical dimer row, co-existing with several different monomer row motifs. On this basis, we propose that emergent canonical dimer row patterns are more likely for amino acids with side-chains that are non-compact and that also lack extensive hydrogen bonding capacity, and that engage strongly with the underlying substrate. These findings provide a fundamental basis to rationally guide the design of desired self-assembled nanostructures on planar surfaces.

Graphenic Materials for Biomedical Applications

Graphene-based nanomaterials have been intensively studied for their properties, modifications, and application potential. Biomedical applications are one of the main directions of research in this field. This review summarizes the research results which were obtained in the last two years (2017-2019), especially those related to drug/gene/protein delivery systems and materials with antimicrobial properties. Due to the large number of studies in the area of carbon nanomaterials, attention here is focused only on 2D structures, i.e. graphene, graphene oxide, and reduced graphene oxide.
