Heteroatom-Promoted Polyhexagonal Saddle-Shaped Molecular Structures and their Supramolecular Coassembly with C60

Molecules with curved architecture can exhibit unique optoelectronic properties due to the concave-convex π-surface. However, synthesizing negatively curved saddle-shaped aromatic systems has been challenging due to the internal structural strain. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of two polyhexagonal molecular systems, 1 and 2, with saddle shape geometry by judiciously varying the aromatic moiety, avoiding the harsh synthetic methods as that of heptagonal aromatic saddle systems. The unique geometry preferences of B, N, and S furnish suitable curvature to the molecules, featuring saddle shape. The saddle geometry also enables them to interact with fullerene C60 , and the supramolecular interactions of fullerene C60 with 1 and 2 modify their optoelectronic properties. Crystal structure analysis reveals that 1, with a small π-surface, forms a double columnar array of fullerenes in the solid state. In contrast, 2 with a large π-surface produces a supramolecular capsule entrapping two discrete fullerenes. The intermolecular interactions between B, N, S, and the aryl-π surface of the host and C60 guest are the stabilizing factors for creating these supramolecular structures. Comprehensive computational, optical, and Raman spectroscopic studies establish the charge transfer interactions between B-N doped heterocycle host and fullerene C60 guest.

Synthesis, Structure, and Photophysical Properties of BN-Embedded Analogue of Coronene

Two BN-embedded benzo[ghi]perylene (Bzp) and coronene derivatives (BN-Bzp and BN-Cor) have been successfully synthesized from binaphthyl precursors by new efficient one-pot-multibond routes, and their single crystal structures were analyzed. Both experimental spectra and DFT theoretical calculations indicated that the absorption and emission of these BN-embedded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are significantly enhanced comparing with those of their all carbon analogues. Especially, the fluorescence quantum yield of BN-Cor is nearly 20 times higher than that of ordinary coronene.

Pyrrolic Type N Directed Borylation Route to BN-PAHs: Tuning the Photophysical Properties by Varying the Conjugation Shape and Size

Two series of BN-cyclopenta[a]phenalenes have been synthesized through an indole/pyrrole oriented borylation reaction. A total of five compounds are obtained and fully characterized; one of them is unambiguously confirmed by single X-ray crystal structure. Their photophysical properties could be finely tuned through varying the conjugation size and shape of the bottom PAHs applied. Moreover, their response toward fluoride anions was also investigated.

One tool to bring them all: Au-catalyzed synthesis of B,O- and B,N-doped PAHs from boronic and borinic acids

The isoelectronic replacement of C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> C bonds with ⁻BN⁺ bonds in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a widely used tool to prepare novel optoelectronic materials. Far less well explored are corresponding B,O-doped PAHs, although they have a similarly high application potential. We herein report on the modular synthesis of B,N- and B,O-doped PAHs through the [Au(PPh₃)NTf₂]-catalyzed 6-endo-dig cyclization of BN–H and BO–H bonds across suitably positioned C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> C bonds in the key step. Readily available, easy-to-handle o-alkynylaryl boronic and borinic acids serve as starting materials, which are either cyclized directly or first converted into the corresponding aminoboranes and then cyclized. The reaction even tolerates bulky mesityl substituents on boron, which later kinetically protect the formed B,N/O-PAHs from hydrolysis or oxidation. Our approach is also applicable for the synthesis of rare doubly B,N/O-doped PAHs. Specifically, we prepared 1,2-B,E-naphthalenes and -anthracenes, 1,5-B₂-2,6-E₂-anthracenes (E = N, O) as well as B,O₂-containing and unprecedented B,N,O-containing phenalenyls. Selected examples of these compounds have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography; their optoelectronic properties have been studied by cyclic voltammetry, electron spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calculations. Using a new unsubstituted (B,O)₂-perylene as the substrate for late-stage functionalization, we finally show that the introduction of two pinacolatoboryl (Bpin) substituents is possible in high yield and with perfect regioselectivity via an Ir-catalyzed C–H borylation approach.

Singly and doubly B,E-doped PAHs were synthesized using a protocol that starts from easy-to-handle boronic and borinic acids and offers the possibility to choose between the preparation of B,O- and B,N-PAHs in the final reaction step.

Intramolecular (directed) electrophilic C-H borylation

The intramolecular C-H borylation of (hetero)arenes and alkenes using electrophilic boranes is a powerful transition metal free methodology for forming C-B bonds. These C-H borylation reactions are preceded by intermolecular bond (both dative and covalent) formation, with examples proceeding via initial C-B and N-B bond formation dominating this field thus both are discussed in depth herein. Less prevalent intramolecular electrophilic C-H borylation reactions that proceed by intermolecular O-B, S-B and P-B bond formation are also summarised. Mechanistic studies are presented that reveal two mechanisms for C-H borylation, (i) electrophilic aromatic substitution (prevalent with B-X electrophiles); (ii) σ-bond metathesis mediated (prevalent with B-H and B-R electrophiles). To date, intramolecular electrophilic C-H borylation is utilised mainly for accessing boron containing conjugated organic materials, however recent developments, summarized herein alongside early studies, have highlighted the applicability of this methodology for forming synthetically versatile organo-boronate esters and boron containing bioactives. The multitude of synthetic procedures reported for intramolecular electrophilic C-H borylation contain many common features and this enables key requirements for successful C-H borylation and the factors effecting regioselectivity and substrate scope to be identified, discussed and summarized.

Synthesis, Structures, and Properties of BN-Dinaphthothiophenes: Influence of B and N Placement on Photophysical Properties and Aromaticity

Substitution of the C═C functionality with the isosteric and isoelectronic B-N moiety has emerged as a powerful way to expand the family of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In this paper, two types of BN-dinaphthothiophene (BN-DNT) derivatives with different B and N substitution patterns were synthesized in short steps from commercially available materials. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that BN-DNT 1 and 2 had rigid and planar frameworks. Their photophysical properties and the aromaticity of the BN rings of the BN-DNTs were slightly dependent on the B and N substitution patterns. However, their response toward fluoride anions was greatly dependent on the B and N substitution patterns.

Syntheses and structures of benzo-bis(1,3,2-diazaboroles) and acenaphtho-1,3,2-diazaboroles

Colorless crystalline 2,6-dibromo-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,5,7-tetraphenylbenzobis(diazaborole) 4 resulted from the cyclocondensation of 3,6-dimethyl-1,2,4,5-tetraphenylaminobenzene 3d with two equivalents of boron tribromide in the presence of calcium hydride. Synthesis of the dark-red crystalline 2-bromo-N,N'-bis(diisopropylphenyl)acenaphtho-1,3,2-diazaborole 7 was effected by the cyclocondensation of 1,2-bis(N-2',6'-diisopropylphenylimino)acenaphthene (5) and boron tribromide with subsequent sodium amalgam reduction of the initially formed burgundy red diazaborolium salt 6. Compounds 4, 6 and 7 are characterised by elemental analyses, ¹H, ¹¹B and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy, as well as by single X-ray diffraction studies. The electronic structures of 4, 6 and 7 are subject to DFT calculations.
