Flavin adenine dinucleotide-capped gold nanoclusters: biocompatible photo-emissive nanomaterial and reservoir of lumichrome

A novel biocompatible nanohybrid consisting of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) capped with FAD cofactor molecules exhibits distinctive and unique features compared to those of free FAD. The spherical shape of the AuNC provides a large surface to volume ratio, thereby enabling a huge amount of FAD on the AuNC surface while, in basic media and under nitrogen atmosphere, the considerable curvature of its surface enables light-triggered delivery of lumichrome, which is an effective photosensitizer and fluorescent probe.

Rapid preparation of water-soluble Ag@Au nanoclusters with bright deep-red emission

Deep-red (λ_em ∼ 710 nm) thiolated Ag@Au nanoclusters with a quantum yield of ∼18% were rapidly (∼12 min) prepared in aqueous solutions. The effects of pH and silver ions were demonstrated. The surface modification further resulted in nanoclusters with a quantum yield of ∼38%, the highest value ever reported for water-soluble red Au nanoclusters. This will highly facilitate their applications in sensing, bioimaging, etc.

Charge Neutralization Strategy to Construct Salt-Tolerant and Cell-Permeable Nanoprobes: Application in Ratiometric Sensing and Imaging of Intracellular pH

Intracellular pH homeostasis is essential for the survival and function of biological cells. Negatively charged molecular probes, such as pyranine (HPTS), tend to exhibit poor salt tolerance and unsatisfactory cell permeability, limiting their widespread use in intracellular assays. Herein, we explored a charge neutralization strategy using multicharged cationic nanocarriers for an efficient and stable assembly with the pH-sensitive HPTS. Through immobilization and neutralization with poly(allylamine hydrochloride)-stabilized red-emitting gold nanoclusters (PAH-AuNCs), the resulting nanoprobes (HPTS-PAH-AuNCs) offered improved salt tolerance, satisfactory cell permeability, and dual-emission properties. The fluorescence ratio exhibited a linear response over the pH range of 3.0-9.0. Moreover, the proposed HPTS-PAH-AuNCs were successfully applied to determine and visualize lysosomal pH variations in living cells, which indicated great potential for biosensing and bioimaging applications in living systems. Benefiting from the charge neutralization strategy, various types of probes can be expected to achieve broader analytical applications.

Luminescent Hydrogel Based on Silver Nanocluster/Malic Acid and Its Composite Film for Highly Sensitive Detection of Fe3

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) with excellent photoluminescence properties are an emerging functional material that have rich physical and chemical properties and broad application prospects. However, it is a challenging problem to construct such materials into complex ordered aggregates and cause aggregation-induced emission (AIE). In this article, we use the supramolecular self-assembly strategy to regulate a water-soluble, atomically precise Ag NCs (NH₄)₉[Ag₉(C₇H₄SO₂)₉] (Ag₉-NCs, [Ag₉(mba)₉], H₂mba = 2-mercaptobenzoic acid) and L-malic acid (L–MA) to form a phosphorescent hydrogel with stable and bright luminescence, which is ascribed to AIE phenomenon. In this process, the AIE of Ag₉-NCs could be attributed to the non-covalent interactions between L–MA and Ag₉-NCs, which restrict the intramolecular vibration and rotation of ligands on the periphery of Ag₉-NCs, thus inhibiting the ligand-related, non-radiative excited state relaxation and promoting radiation energy transfer. In addition, the fluorescent Ag₉-NCs/L–MA xerogel was introduced into polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) to form an excellently fluorescent film for sensing of Fe³⁺. Ag₉-NCs/L–MA/PMMA film exhibits an excellent ability to recognize Fe³⁺ ion with high selectivity and a low detection limit of 0.3 μM. This research enriches self-assembly system for enhancing the AIE of metal NCs, and the prepared hybrid films will become good candidates for optical materials.

Two-Photon Fluorescent Nanomaterials and Their Applications in Biomedicine

In recent years, two-photon excited (TPE) materials have attracted great attentions because of their excellent advantages over conventional one-photon excited (OPE) materials, such as deep tissue penetration, three-dimensional spatial selectivity and low phototoxicity. Also, they have been widely applied in lots of field, such as biosensing, imaging, photo-catalysis, photoelectric conversion, and therapy. In this article, we review recent advances in vibrant topic of two-photon fluorescent nanomaterials, including organic molecules, quantum dots (QDs), carbon dots (CDs) and metal nanoclus-ters (MNCs). The optical properties, synthetic methods and important applications of TPE nanomaterials in biomedical field, such as biosensing, imaging and therapy are introduced. Also, the probable challenges and perspectives in the forthcoming development of two-photon fluorescent nanomaterials are addressed.

Fluorescent nanocomposites based on gold nanoclusters for metal ion detection and white light emitting diodes

Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are among the most promising organic-inorganic hybrid luminescent materials for various applications. The current development of AuNCs majorly focuses on controlling their luminescence properties. Herein, we report a new strategy to facilely construct two different nanocomposites featuring enhanced photoluminescence based on mercaptopropionic acid-protected AuNCs (MPA-AuNCs). Through co-assembly with Zn2+ and 2-methylimidazole (2M-IM), the weak luminescence of MPA-AuNCs evolved into either intense blue-green or orange emission at different concentration ratios of additives. HR-TEM and spectroscopic characterization studies revealed that the intense blue-green emission was ascribed to the formation of ZnS quantum dots (QDs) on the outer surface of AuNCs (AuNCs@ZnS), while the strong orange emission originated from the primitive MPA-AuNC core encapsulated by a cubic ZIF-8 shell (AuNCs@ZIF-8). The AuNCs@ZnS nanocomposite was further applied as an exceptional chemical sensor for selective detection of Pb2+ and Fe3+via different quenching mechanisms, and the AuNCs@ZIF-8 composite was applied for fabricating light-converting devices. The co-assembly of AuNCs with Zn2+ and imidazole derivatives provides a facile strategy for acquiring differentiated nanomaterials that have versatile potential applications in chemical detection and light-converting devices.

Gold nanoclusters for ratiometric sensing of pH in extremely acidic media

AuNCs capped with β-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate exhibit an outstanding performance as ratiometric, fluorescent pH sensors in extremely acid media (0.6–2.7) and in the 7.0–9.2 pH range; the nanocluster itself is the fluorophore.
