Abstract
1D and 2DNICS π . zz SOM ${{{\rm { NICS}}}_{{\rm { {\rm \pi}{}}}{\rm { .zz}}}^{{\rm { SOM}}}}$ (Sigma only model) calculations were performed on recently established tricyclic 1,4-diphosphinines as well as related benzene and pyrazine derivatives. The study was extended to evaluate the effect of the fused rings on the overall aromatic properties with a special focus on functional groups such as carbenes. The effect of non-aromatic heterocycles on the local ring current of the central ring is small, while aromatic heterocycles (e. g. NHC, imidazolium) lead to a global aromaticity. A higher sulfur content of the adjacent five-membered rings reduces the central ring current. The comparison to related tricyclic benzene and pyrazine derivatives showed that the 1,4-diphosphinine systems resemble more closely the situation in the benzene derivatives than the pyrazines. The effect of charged systems was studied using bis(TTF)-fused 1,4-diphosphinines and, according toNICS π . zz SOM ${{{\rm { NICS}}}_{{\rm { {\rm \pi}{}}}{\rm { .zz}}}^{{\rm { SOM}}}}$ values, the neutral form doesn't possess significant aromaticity but the tetracation resembles the global aromatic situation observed for other heterocycles in this study.

Abstract
A broad study on [4 + 1]- and [4 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions of a thiazole-2-thione-based 1,4-diphosphinine (1) is reported, with a special focus on reversible reactions. Reactions of 1 with group 13 carbenoids DippNacNacM (M = Al and Ga) afford [4 + 1] adducts that can be classified as Al and Ga phosphides or as 7-metalla-1,4-norbornadienes. Reactions of 1 with alkynes and alkenes result in [4 + 2]-cycloaddition, affording 1,4-diphosphabarrelenes. The effect of different dienophiles on the formation of 1,4-diphosphabarrelenes and their thermal [4 + 2]-cycloreversion reactions is studied from an experimental as well as theoretical point of view, opening the door for protection/deprotection strategies in this chemistry.

Abstract
Reactions of tricyclic 1,4-diphosphinines 1,4 with LiOH, followed by protonation are reported. 1,3-Thiazole-2-thione-derived 1 enabled only observation of the first anionic addition product 2/3. On the other hand, imidazole-2-selone-annelated derivative 4 enabled the identification of the first (5) and second product (6) at low temperature. As water was eliminated upon warming in both cases, DFT calculations were performed to gain more insight into the reaction pathway(s).

Abstract
When bismuth atoms are incorporated into cyclic organic systems, this commonly goes along with strained or distorted molecular geometries, which can be exploited to modulate the physical and chemical properties of these compounds. In six-membered heterocycles, bismuth atoms are often accompanied by oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen as a second hetero-element. In this work, we present the first examples of six-membered rings, in which two CH units are replaced by BiX moieties (X=Cl, Br, I), resulting in dihydro-anthracene analogs. Their behavior in chemically reversible reduction reactions is explored, aiming at the generation of dibisma-anthracene (bismanthrene). Heterometallic compounds (Bi/Fe, Bi/Mn) are introduced as potential bismanthrene surrogates, as supported by bismanthrene-transfer to selenium. Analytical techniques used to investigate the reported compounds include NMR spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and DFT calculations.

Abstract
1,4-Diphosphabarrelenes are bicyclic diphosphines relevant, for example, for the generation of polymetallic coordination compounds. However, current synthetic protocols either suffer from low yields or require multiple reaction steps. Herein, we report the one-step synthesis of pyrrole-based 1,4-diphosphabarrelenes that are obtained in very good yields from the reaction of 1,2,5-trimethylpyrrole with 1,2-bis(dichlorophosphino)ethane or 1,2-bis(dichlorophosphino)benzene. The new caged diphosphines are strong donor ligands and act as bridging ligand in nickel(0), rhodium(I), iridium(I) and copper(I) coordination compounds.

Abstract
Anionic 1,4-dihydro-1,4-diphosphinines were synthesized from tricyclic 1,4-diphosphinines and isolated as blue powdery salts M[2a-2c]. Reaction of solutions of these monoanions with iodomethane led to P-methylated compounds 3a-3c. An oxidation/reduction cycle was examined, starting from solutions of K[2a] via P-P coupled product 4a and back to K[2a], and the recyclability and redox chemistry of this cycle were confirmed by experimental and simulated cyclic voltammetry analysis, which is proposed as a potential 2-electron cathode for rechargeable cells. TD-DFT studies were used to examine species that might be involved in the process.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with room-temperature magnetism are highly desirable but challenging due to the weak superexchange interaction between metal atoms. For this purpose, strengthening the hybridization between metal ion and organic linkage presents an experiment-feasible chemical solution to enhance the Curie temperature. Here, we report three 2D Cr(II) aromatic heterocyclic MOF magnets with enhanced Curie temperature by bridging Cr(II) ions with pyrazine, 1,4-diphosphinine, and 1,4-diarsenin linkers, i.e., Cr(pyz)2, Cr(diphos)2, and Cr(diarse)2, and using first-principles calculations. Our results show that Cr(pyz)2, Cr(diphos)2, and Cr(diarse)2 are ferrimagnetic semiconductors. In particular, the Curie temperature of Cr(pyz)2 is estimated to be about 344 K and could be enhanced to 512 and 437 K in Cr(diphos)2 and Cr(diarse)2 by strengthening the hybridization between Cr ions and organic linkers via d-π* direct exchange interaction. This study presents a prototype to obtain room-temperature magnetism in 2D Cr(II)-based MOF magnets for nanoscale spintronics applications.

Abstract
Synthesis of the tricyclic 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-derived 1,4-dihydro-1,4-diphosphinine is presented using a base-induced ring formation protocol and chloro(diethylamino)(1,3-dithiole-2-thion-4-yl)phosphane as the starting point. P-oxidation reactions of dihydrodiphosphinine by chalcogens led to bis(P-oxide), bis(P-sulfide), or bis(P-selenide), respectively; all tricyclic compounds were obtained as cis/trans mixtures. 1,4-Dihydro-1,4-diphosphinine was converted into 1,4-dichloro-1,4-dihydro-1,4-diphosphinine. This compound is almost insoluble in organic solvents, furnished selectively the trans-bis(amino) derivative upon a 2-fold P-substitution reaction with the weak nucleophile potassium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide, and reacted also with alcohols ROH (R = nBu, iPr, tBu) to give cis/trans mixtures of the corresponding bis(alkoxy) derivatives. Furthermore, the dichloro derivative could be reduced to a 1,4-diphosphinine using PnBu3, but, unfortunately, the stubbornly insoluble product could be neither purified nor crystallized. Despite this, we achieved a thermal [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of this first CPS-ternary compound with diethylacetylene dicarboxylate to obtain the corresponding diphosphabarrelene, thus providing indirect evidence for the aromatic tricyclic diphosphinine. Detailed density functional theory studies on the formation of 1,4-diphosphinine provided insights into formation pathways as well as NMR, IR, and UV/vis data.

Abstract
While the implication of the aromaticity concept has been dramatically expanded to date since its emergence in 1865, the classical [4n+2]/4n-electron counting protocol still plays an essential role in evaluating the aromatic nature of compounds. Over the last few decades, a variety of heavier heterocycles featuring the formal [4n+2] π-electron arrangements have been developed, which allows for assessing their aromatic nature. In this review, we present recent developments of the [4n+2]-electron systems of heavier heterocycles involving group 13-15 elements. The synthesis, spectroscopic data, structural parameters, computational data, and reactivity are introduced.

Abstract
This review describes synthetic concepts and breakthroughs in 1,4-diphosphinine and related P-bridged bis(NHCs) chemistry, covering the last four decades, starting from monocyclic 1,4-dihydro-1,4-diphosphinines in the early 80s to the most recent and promising achievements of tricyclic 1,4-dihydro-1,4-diphosphinines and tricyclic 1,4-diphosphinines. Theoretical aspects are presented for 1,4-dihydro- and 1,4-diphosphinines considering HOMO LUMO situations as well as the degree of aromaticity. Moreover, fundamental characteristics of analytical data of these compounds are highlighted with special focus on substituent effects, structural aspects and trends of electrophilicity. The two P-centers and the heterocyclic rings of 1,4-dihydro- and 1,4-diphosphinines constitute a broad platform for substitution, reduction/oxidation, alkylation, complexation and cycloaddition reactions, i.e., a comprehensive compilation of reactivity aspects is presented. Furthermore, very recent developments in the synthesis and reactivity of tricyclic PV/V- and PIII/III-bridged bis(imidazole-2-ylidenes) will be discussed together with new perspectives derived from an antiaromatic middle ring. In total, our intention is to show new frontiers, i.e., new synthetic paths, thus creating novel opportunities for potential applications in molecular and materials chemistry.

Abstract
Herein, we report the first 1,4-diphosphinine-1,4-diide compound [(ADCPh )P]2 (5-Ph) (ADCPh =PhC{(NDipp)C}2 ; Dipp=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ) derived from an anionic dicarbene (ADCPh ) as a red crystalline solid. Compound 5-Ph containing a 16π-electron planar fused-tricyclic ring system was obtained by the 4e reduction of [(ADCPh )PCl2 ]2 (4-Ph) with Mg (or KC8 ) in a quantitative yield. Experimental and computational results imply that the central 8π-electrons C4 P2 ring of 5-Ph, which is fused between two 6π-electrons C3 N2 aromatic rings, is antiaromatic. Thus, each of the phosphorus atoms of 5-Ph has two electron-lone-pairs, one in a p-type orbital is in conjugation with the C=C bonds of the C4 P2 ring, while the second resides in a σ-symmetric orbital. This can be shown with the gold complex [(ADCPh )P(AuCl)2 ]2 (6-Ph) obtained by reacting 5-Ph with (Me2 S)AuCl. A mixture of 5-Ph and 4-Ph undergoes comproportionation in the presence of MgCl2 to form the intermediate oxidation state compound [(ADCAr )P]2 (MgCl4 ) (7-Ph), which is an aromatic species.

Abstract
A phosphanido-type bridged bis(imidazolium) salt, readily prepared in two steps via reductive deselenization of a tricyclic 1,4-diphosphinine diselone, affords access to a novel anionic P-functional tricyclic bis(NHC) via deprotonation. The former also offers a P-functionalization/deprotonation sequence to access the first mixed P-substituted tricyclic bis(NHCs), as well as coordination of the phosphorus centers to rhodium(i) fragments.

Abstract
Diels–Alder-reactions of a thiazol-2-thione-based, tricyclic 1,4-diphosphinine were investigated, showing that the central aromatic π-system can react with various dienophiles. In one case, photochemical deprotection of the 1,4-diphosphinine was found.
