Recent Progress in 2D Metal-Organic Framework-Related Materials

2D metal-organic frameworks-based (2D MOF-related) materials benefit from variable topological structures, plentiful open active sites, and high specific surface areas, demonstrating promising applications in gas storage, adsorption and separation, energy conversion, and other domains. In recent years, researchers have innovatively designed multiple strategies to avoid the adverse effects of conventional methods on the synthesis of high-quality 2D MOFs. This review focuses on the latest advances in creative synthesis techniques for 2D MOF-related materials from both the top-down and bottom-up perspectives. Subsequently, the strategies are categorized and summarized for synthesizing 2D MOF-related composites and their derivatives. Finally, the current challenges are highlighted faced by 2D MOF-related materials and some targeted recommendations are put forward to inspire researchers to investigate more effective synthesis methods.

The Chemistry and Applications of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) as Industrial Enzyme Immobilization Systems

Enzymatic biocatalysis is a sustainable technology. Enzymes are versatile and highly efficient biocatalysts, and have been widely employed due to their biodegradable nature. However, because the three-dimensional structure of these enzymes is predominantly maintained by weaker non-covalent interactions, external conditions, such as temperature and pH variations, as well as the presence of chemical compounds, can modify or even neutralize their biological activity. The enablement of this category of processes is the result of the several advances in the areas of molecular biology and biotechnology achieved over the past two decades. In this scenario, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are highlighted as efficient supports for enzyme immobilization. They can be used to ‘house’ a specific enzyme, providing it with protection from environmental influences. This review discusses MOFs as structures; emphasizes their synthesis strategies, properties, and applications; explores the existing methods of using immobilization processes of various enzymes; and lists their possible chemical modifications and combinations with other compounds to formulate the ideal supports for a given application.

Advanced Anode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries: Confining Polyoxometalates in Flexible Metal-Organic Frameworks by the "Breathing Effect"

Polyoxometalates (POMs) have shown great potential in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their reversible multielectron redox property and high ionic conductivity. Currently, POM-based SIBs suffer from the irreversible trapping and sluggish transmission kinetics of Na⁺. Herein, a series of POMs/metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)/graphene oxide (GO) (MOFs = MIL-101, MIL-53, and MIL-88B; POM = [PMo₁₂O₄₀]^3-, denoted as PMo₁₂) composites are developed as SIB anode materials for the first time. Unlike MIL-101 with large pore structures, the pores in flexible MIL-53 and MIL-88B swell spontaneously upon the accommodation of PMo₁₂. Particularly, the PMo₁₂/MIL-88B/GO composites deliver an excellent specific capacity of 214.2 mAh g^-1 for 600 cycles at 2.0 A g^-1, with a high initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of 51.0%. The so-called "breathing effect" of flexible MOFs leads to the relatively tight confinement space for PMo₁₂, which greatly modulates its electronic structure, affects the adsorption energy of Na⁺, and eventually reduces the trapping of sodium ions. Additionally, the straight and multidimensional channels in MIL-88B significantly accelerate ion diffusion, inducing favored energetic kinetics and thus generating high-rate performance.

Facile high yield, excellent catalytic performance of polyoxometalate-based lanthanide phosphine oxide complexes: Syntheses, structures, photocatalysis and THz spectra

Water pollution, which continuously threatens human health and the sustainable development of society, has become a major concern. Photocatalytic degradation is an effective strategy to remove organic dyes from wastewater. For this strategy, it is crucial to select the appropriate catalyst. Using triphenylphosphine oxide (OPPh₃) as the ligand, phosphomolybdic acid as the anion template, three new lanthanide complexes [Ln(OPPh₃)₄(H₂O)₃](PMo₁₂O₄₀)∙4C₂H₅OH (1-3) (Ln = Sm, Gd, Tb) were synthesized. The raw materials for the reaction are cheap and readily available. The convenient synthesis method is environmentally friendly, with high yield (70%-80%). Complexes 1-3 are all seven-coordinated mononuclear structures centered on lanthanide ions, [PMo₁₂O₄₀]^3- anions and solvent molecules are not coordinated with metal ions. These mononuclear structures eventually form complicated 3D supramolecular structures through hydrogen bonds, Mo-O ^… π or C-H ^… π weak interactions. Complexes 1-3 photocatalytic degradation of MB have high removal rates, as catalysts have enough stability to be reused, and can be used as excellent catalysts for the degradation of dye molecules in sewage. Among them, the removal rate of MB by photodegradation of complex 2 was highest (99.50%). In addition, the effects of different initial concentrations of MB solution and different types of organic dyes on the photocatalysis experiment were investigated. The photocatalytic reaction mechanism of complexes 1-3 was also studied. Due to the similar structures of complexes 1-3, they have almost the same THz absorption spectra with different absorption intensity, which may be attributed to the difference of the number of weak interactions. Therefore, terahertz spectroscopy can be used as a sensitive method to distinguish and determine small differences between lanthanide-organic complexes. This is the first time that this spectrum has been used to characterize lanthanide phosphine oxide complexes modified by [PMo₁₂O₄₀]^3-.

Surfactant-assisted fabrication and supercapacitor performances of a 12-phosphomolybdate-pillared metal–organic framework containing a helix and its SWNT nanocomposites

By employing a surfactant-assisted hydrothermal method, a new POMOF with a multi-fold helix was obtained, and NiPMo12/SWNTs exhibits excellent electrochemical performance and good stability as an electrode material for supercapacitors.

Exploring the Coordination Modes of a Keggin-Type [ZnW12O40]6- Anionic Cluster: Bonding Patterns, Crystal Structure, and Semiconducting Properties

Polyoxometalate-based organic-inorganic hybrid compounds (POIHCs) have been greatly developed due to their wide application prospects, but the pursuit of their directed synthesis via molecular design still remains a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate that the coordination modes of the Keggin-type [ZnW₁₂O₄₀]^6- anion can be tuned, which leads to different semiconductor characteristics. Using the same building block, ligand, and metal ion (ZnW₁₂, phen, Cu²⁺), we synthesized three new POIHCs with different bonding patterns by means of different coordination modes of ZnW₁₂. The three POIHCs (H₂phen){ZnW₁₂O₄₀[Cu(phen)₂]₂}·3H₂O (1), {ZnW₁₂O₄₀[Cu(phen)(H₂O)₂]₂[Cu(phen)(H₂O)]}_n·3H₂O (2), and (Me₄N)₂{ZnW₁₂O₄₀[Cu(phen)(H₂O)]₂}_n·5H₂O (3) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 appears as a zero-dimensional coordination complex cluster, while compounds 2 and 3 are both 1D chain structures with different Cu²⁺ bridge linkages. Although these three POIHCs possess the same chemical components, their semiconductor properties are different, which is demonstrated by measurements of transient photocurrent and band gap (E_g) values. Furthermore, we carried out comparative experiments on the photoconductivity performance of compounds 1-3 and their photocatalytic reduction from O₂ to H₂O₂, indicating the significant influence of the energy level matching on the photocatalytic activity.

A Copper-Containing Polyoxometalate-Based Metal-Organic Framework as an Efficient Catalyst for Selective Catalytic Oxidation of Alkylbenzenes

A copper-containing polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework (POMOF), Cu^I₁₂Cl₂(trz)₈[HPW₁₂O₄₀] (HENU-7, HENU = Henan University; trz = 1,2,4-triazole), has been successfully synthesized and well-characterized. In addition, the excellent catalytic ability of HENU-7 has been proved by the selective oxidation of diphenylmethane. Under the optimal conditions, the diphenylmethane conversion obtained over HENU-7 is 96%, while the selectivity to benzophenone is 99%, which outperforms most noble-metal-free POM-based catalysts. Moreover, HENU-7 is stable to reuse for five runs without an obvious loss in activity and also can catalyze the oxidation of different benzylic C-H with satisfactory conversions and selectivities, which implied the significant catalytic activity and recyclability.

Metal alkoxide-derived Co@NC/NCNS as a highly efficient bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst

A promising bifunctional catalyst integrating Co@NC units and porous structure carbon nanosheets (Co@NC/NCNS) is in situ prepared by the calcination and subsequent acid etching of a mixture containing metal alkoxide and melamine. Benefiting from the synergism among the active sites and porous structure, the optimal Co@NC/NCNS-800 exhibits superior activity for the ORR/OER.

Assembly of 12-Tungstovanadate-Templated Nanocage and Nanocomposites with Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes as Anodes in Lithium-Ion Batteries

A new 12-tungstovanadate-templated 3D nanocage framework, Ag₁₀(μ₄-ttz)₄(H₂O)₄(VW₁₂O₄₀) (VW₁₂@MOCF), was designed based on a "molecular library", hydrothermally synthesized, structurally characterized, and explored as anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Combination of the structural superiority of VW₁₂@MOCF with the good electrical conductivity of the single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) renders the VW₁₂@MOCF/SWNT-2 nanocomposite reasonable electrochemical performance and stability as anode materials of LIBs. The successful cooperative fabrication of nanocages and polyoxometalate (POMs) must initiate extensive research interests.

A polypyrrole-coated eightfold-helical Wells-Dawson POM-based Cu-FKZ framework for enhanced colorimetric sensing

To explore a novel colorimetric biosensor with high sensibility and selectivity, a new Wells-Dawson-type polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) with an eightfold helix, [Cu₉(FKZ)₁₂(H₂O)₈][H₃P₂W₁₈O₆₂]₂·4H₂O (CuFKZP₂W₁₈) (HFKZ = 1-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-1,1-bis[(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)methyl] ethanol), was successfully synthesized; then, polypyrrole (PPy) was introduced to fabricate CuFKZP₂W₁₈/PPy(n) nanocomposites (n = 7%, 15%, 30%) via a facile in situ oxidation polymerization process. All the results indicate that CuFKZP₂W₁₈/PPy(15%) as a colorimetric biosensor exhibits lower limits of detection (0.07 μM towards H₂O₂ and 0.627 μM towards ascorbic acid), smaller K_m values (0.106 mM for H₂O₂ and 0.042 mM for o-phenylenediamine) and higher sensitivity (0.0227 1 μM^-1 towards H₂O₂ and 0.0025 1 μM^-1 to ascorbic acid) than most reported enzyme mimetics to the best of our knowledge.

Graphite-like polyoxometalate-based metal–organic framework as an efficient anode for lithium ion batteries

An unprecedented organic–inorganic hybrid material based on Wells–Dawson-type tungstovanadate building blocks and cobalt(ii)–organic framework with a bis(triazole) ligand was prepared and employed to catalyze solvent-free ROP of caprolactone.

Synthesis, structural characterisation, and cytotoxicity studies of Bi, W, and Mo containing homo- and hetero-bimetallic polyoxometalates

Three new and different homo- and hetero-bimetallic polyoxometalate (POM) species have been synthesised by simple one-pot synthetic methods utilising naturally occurring bismite (Bi₂O₃) (or Bi(NO₃)₃·5H₂O) and aryl sulfonic acids. The POM species isolated are (NH₄)₁₄[Bi₂W₂₂O₇₆]·14H₂O (1·14H₂O), (NH₄)[Bi(DMSO)₇][Mo₈O₂₆]·H₂O (2·H₂O) and [(NH₄)₄(Mo₃₆O₁₀₈(OH)₄·16H₂O)]·45H₂O (3·45H₂O). The compounds have been characterised by X-ray crystallography, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), powdered X-ray diffraction (PXRD), mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric (TGA) and ICP analyis. In vitro cytoxicity and proliferation studies conducted on 1 and 3, highlight the low toxicity of these species.

Polyoxometalate-Incorporated Metallacalixarene@Graphene Composite Electrodes for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Composites of polyoxometalate (POM)/metallacalixarene/graphene-based electrode materials not only integrate the superiority of the individual components perfectly but also ameliorate the demerits to some extent, providing a promising route to approach high-performance supercapacitors. Herein, first, we report the preparations, structures, and electrochemical performance of two fascinating POM-incorporated metallacalixarene compounds [Ag₅(C₂H₂N₃)₆][H₅ ⊂ SiMo₁₂O₄₀] (1) and [Ag₅(C₂H₂N₃)₆][H₅ ⊂ SiW₁₂O₄₀] (2); (C₂H₂N₃ = 1 H-1,2,4-triazole). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses illustrated that both 1 and 2 possess intriguing POM-sandwiched metallacalix[6]arene frameworks. Nevertheless, our investigations, including the electrochemical cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge tests, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, reveal that the oxidation ability of the Keggin ions is a primary effect in electrochemical performance of these POM-incorporated metallacalixarene compounds. Namely, the electrodes containing Mo as metal atoms in the Keggin POM shows much higher capacitance than the corresponding W-containing ones. Moreover, compound 1@graphene oxide (GO) composite electrodes are fabricated and systematically explored for their supercapacitor performance. Thanks to the synergetic effects of GO and POM-incorporated metallacalixarenes, the compound 1@15%GO-based electrode exhibits the highest specific capacitance of up to 230.2 F g^-1 (current density equal to 0.5 A g^-1), which is superior to majority of the reported POM-based electrode materials.

Isopolymolybdate-based inorganic–organic hybrid compounds constructed by multidentate N-donor ligands: syntheses, structures and properties

Five isopolymolybdate-based hybrid compounds were achieved and their photocatalytic activities for dye degradation were explored.
