Abstract
Transition-metal-catalyzed double/triple bond metathesis reactions have been well-established due to the ability of transition-metal catalysts to readily interact with π bonds, facilitating the progression of the entire reaction. However, activating σ-bonds to induce σ-bond metathesis is more challenging due to the absence of π bonds and the high bond energy of σ bonds. In this study, we present a novel photo-induced approach that does not rely on transition metals or photosensitizers to drive C-C and C-N σ-bond metathesis reactions. This method enables the cross-coupling of tertiary amines with α-diketones via C-C and C-N single bonds cleavage and recombination. Notably, our protocol exhibits good compatibility with various functional groups in the absence of transition metals and external photosensitizers, resulting in the formation of aryl alkyl ketones and aromatic amides in good to high yields. To gain insights into the mechanism of this pathway, we conducted controlled experiments, intermediate trapping experiments, and DFT (Density Functional Theory) calculations. This comprehensive approach allowed us to elucidate the detailed mechanism underlying this transformative reaction.

Abstract
In this study, we present a straightforward and highly effective photo-triggered hydrogenation method for aryl halides, devoid of transition-metal catalysts. Through the synergistic utilization of light, PhNHNH2, and a base, we have successfully initiated the desired radical-mediated hydrogenation process. Remarkably, utilizing mild reaction conditions, a wide range of aryl halides, including fluorides, chlorides, bromides, and iodides, can be selectively transformed into their corresponding (hetero)arene counterparts, with exceptional yields. Additionally, this approach demonstrates a remarkable compatibility with diverse functional groups and heterocyclic compounds, highlighting its versatility and potential for use in various chemical transformations.

Abstract
The reductive cleavage of C(Ar)-X bonds is the key step for the cross coupling of Ar-X with other groups. In this work, under the irradiation of 407 nm LEDs using sodium formate as reductant and thiol as hydrogen atom transfer agent, a variety of (hetero)aryl chlorides, bromides, and iodides could be reduced to corresponding (hetero)arenes. The key intermediates, aryl radicals, could be trapped by either hydrogen, phosphite, or borates. The same reduction conditions can be extended to the deprotection of sulfonamides.

Abstract
A visible-light-induced, transition-metal and photosensitizer-free cross-coupling of aryl iodides with hydrazones was developed. In this strategy, hydrazones were used as alternatives to organometallic reagents, in the absence of a transition metal or an external photosensitizer, making this cross-coupling mild and green. The protocol was compatible with a variety of functionalities, including methyl, methoxy, trifluoromethyl, halogen, and heteroaromatic rings. Mechanistic investigations showed that the association of the hydrazone anion with aryl halides formed an electron donor–acceptor complex, which when excited with visible light generated an aryl radical via single-electron transfer. Visible-light-induced catalyst-free cross-coupling of aryl iodides with hydrazones via single-electron-transfer was reported. The mechanistic investigations showed that the association of hydrazone anion with aryl iodides formed an EDA complex.![]()

Abstract
The utilization of readily available starting materials to produce useful molecules is often challenged by selectivity issues. In this study, a Ni-catalyzed protecting-group-free C-C coupling protocol is described for the efficient synthesis of 2,2'-biphenol derivatives. Its remarkable chemoselectivity control ability, wide substrate scope, and excellent functional group tolerance highlight this newly developed strategy. Detailed mechanistic studies have demonstrated that potassium tert-butoxide acts as a critical agent to prevent the occurrence of protonation events.

Abstract
The cleavage and formation of carbon−carbon bonds have emerged as powerful tools for structural modifications in organic synthesis. Although transition−metal−catalyzed decarbonylation of unstrained diaryl ketones provides a viable protocol to construct biaryl structures, the use of expensive catalyst and high temperature (>140 oC) have greatly limited their universal applicability. Moreover, the direct activation of two inert C − C bonds in diaryl ketones without the assistance of metal catalyst has been a great challenge due to the inherent stability of C − C bonds (nonpolar, thermo-dynamically stable, and kinetically inert). Here we report an efficient light-driven transition-metal-free strategy for decarbonylation of unstrained diaryl ketones to construct biaryl compounds through dual inert C − C bonds cleavage. This reaction featured mild reaction conditions, easy-to-handle reactants and reagents, and excellent functional groups tolerance. The mechanistic investigation and DFT calculation suggest that this strategy proceeds through the formation of dioxy radical intermediate via a single-electron-transfer (SET) process between photo-excited diaryl ketone and DBU mediated by DMSO, followed by removal of CO2 to construct biaryl compounds. The cleavage and formation of carbon−carbon bonds is an important strategy for structural modifications in organic syntheses. Herein, the authors present a photoinduced method to construct biaryl compounds through dual inert C−C bond cleavage.

Abstract
The decarbonylative-coupling reaction is generally promoted by transition metals (via organometallic complexes) or peroxides (via radical intermediates), often at high temperatures to facilitate the CO release. Herein, a visible-light-induced, transition metal and external photosensitizer free decarbonylative addition of benzaldehydes to ketones/aldehydes at room temperature is reported. Tertiary/secondary alcohols were obtained in moderate to excellent yields promoted by using CsF under mild conditions. The detailed mechanistic investigation showed that the reaction proceeded through photoexcitation–decarbonylation of the aldehyde to generate an aromatic anion, followed by its addition to ketones/aldehydes. The reaction mechanism was verified by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A visible-light-induced, transition-metal and external photosensitizer free decarbonylative addition of benzaldehydes to ketones/aldehydes via anion intermediates at room temperature is developed.![]()

Abstract
Hydroxyl is widely found in organic molecules as functional group and its deprivation plays an inevitable role in organic synthesis. However, the direct cleavage of Csp3-O bond in alcohols with high selectivity and efficiency, especially without the assistance of metal catalyst, has been a formidable challenge because of its strong bond dissociation energy and unfavorable thermodynamics. Herein, an efficient metal-free strategy that enables direct deoxygenation of alcohols has been developed for the first time, with hydrazine as the reductant induced by light. This protocol features mild reaction conditions, excellent functional group tolerance, and abundant and easily available starting materials, rendering selective deoxygenation of a variety of 1° and 2° alcohols, vicinal diols, and β-1 and even β-O-4 models of natural wood lignin. This strategy is also highlighted by its “traceless” and non-toxic by-products N2 and H2, as readily escapable gases. Mechanistic studies demonstrated dimethyl sulfide being a key intermediate in this transformation. Metal-free direct deoxygenation of alcohols enabled by light Traceless non-toxic N2 and H2 as by-products Broad substrate scope and wide functional group compatibility Converting lignin models into simple aromatics

Abstract
Direct excitation of the commercially available super-electron donor tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene (TDAE) with light-emitting diodes at 440 or 390 nm provides a stoichiometric reductant that is able to reduce aryl chlorides and fluorides. The method is very simple and requires only TDAE, substrate, and solvent at room temperature. The photoactive excited state of TDAE has a lifetime of 17.3 ns in cyclohexane at room temperature and an oxidation potential of ca.-3.4 V vs. SCE. This makes TDAE one of the strongest photoreductants able to operate on the basis of single excitation with visible photons. Direct substrate activation occurs in benzene, but acetone is reduced by photoexcited TDAE and substrate reduction takes place by a previously unexplored solvent radical anion mechanism. Our work shows that solvent can have a leveling effect on the photochemically available redox power, reminiscent of the pH-leveling effect that solvent has in acid-base chemistry.

Abstract
The use of photochemical reactions that do not require expensive photocatalysts or transition metals is an environmentally friendly strategy for accomplishing a variety of structural transformations. Herein, we report a protocol for photoinduced transition-metal- and external-photocatalyst-free intramolecular heteroaryl/aryl rearrangement reactions of 2-heteroaryl/aryloxybenzaldehydes. The protocol was compatible with a variety of functionalities, including methyl, methoxy, cyano, ester, trifluoromethyl, halogen, and heteroaromatic rings. Control experiments suggested that the reaction proceeded via a photoinduced intramolecular heteroaryl/aryl rearrangement process involving photoexcitation of the aldehyde carbonyl group, radical addition, C-C bond formation and C(Ar)-O bond cleavage.

Abstract
Upon UVA irradiation, aryl halides can undergo dehalogenation in the presence of bases and methanol as a hydrogen donor. This catalyst-free photochemical dehalogenation is furnished through a facile radical chain reaction under mild conditions. The chain reaction follows UVA irradiation of the reaction mixture in a transition-metal-free environment. Mechanistic studies support a chain mechanism in which initiation involves absorption by a methoxide-bromoarene complex facilitated by halogen-bonding interactions. The methoxide-bromine interaction leads to a weakened Br-C bond that is prone to facile cleavage during the initiation and propagation steps.

Abstract
Facile reduction of aryl halides with a combination of 5% Pd/C, B2(OH)4, and 4-methylmorpholine is reported. Aryl bromides, iodides, and chlorides were efficiently reduced. Aryl dihalides containing two different halogen atoms underwent selective reduction: I over Br and Cl, and Br over Cl. Beyond these, aryl triflates were efficiently reduced. This combination was broadly general, effectuating reductions of benzylic halides and ethers, alkenes, alkynes, aldehydes, and azides, as well as for N-Cbz deprotection. A cyano group was unaffected, but a nitro group and a ketone underwent reduction to a low extent. When B2(OD)4 was used for aryl halide reduction, a significant amount of deuteriation occurred. However, H atom incorporation competed and increased in slower reactions. 4-Methylmorpholine was identified as a possible source of H atoms in this, but a combination of only 4-methylmorpholine and Pd/C did not result in reduction. Hydrogen gas has been observed to form with this reagent combination. Experiments aimed at understanding the chemistry led to the proposal of a plausible mechanism and to the identification of N,N-bis(methyl-d 3)pyridine-4-amine (DMAP-d 6) and B2(OD)4 as an effective combination for full aromatic deuteriation.

Abstract
A light-driven pinacol coupling protocol without any metals, but with N2H4 as a clean non-metallic hydrogen-atom-transfer (HAT) reductant was described.
Efficient carbon–carbon bond formation is of great importance in modern organic synthetic chemistry. The pinacol coupling discovered over a century ago is still one of the most efficient coupling reactions to build the C–C bond in one step. However, traditional pinacol coupling often requires over-stoichiometric amounts of active metals as reductants, causing long-lasting metal waste issues and sustainability concerns. A great scientific challenge is to design a metal-free approach to the pinacol coupling reaction. Herein, we describe a light-driven pinacol coupling protocol without use of any metals, but with N2H4, used as a clean non-metallic hydrogen-atom-transfer (HAT) reductant. In this transformation, only traceless non-toxic N2 and H2 gases were produced as by-products with a relatively broad aromatic ketone scope and good functional group tolerance. A combined experimental and computational investigation of the mechanism suggests that this novel pinacol coupling reaction proceeds via a HAT process between photo-excited ketone and N2H4, instead of the common single-electron-transfer (SET) process for metal reductants.

Abstract
Photoinduced transition-metal- and photosensitizer-free cross-coupling of aryl halides (including Ar-Cl, Ar-Br, and Ar-I) with H-phosphonates (including dialkyl phosphonates and diarylphosphine oxides) is reported. Various functional groups were tolerated, including ester, methoxy, dimethoxy, alkyl, phenyl, trifluoromethyl, and heterocyclic compounds. This simple and green strategy provides a practical pathway to synthesize arylphosphine oxides.
