Abstract
A series of nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanosheets (NPCNs) doped with transition-metal-supported Pt catalysts were prepared by colloidal deposition and evaluated for the selective oxidation of glycerol to glyceric acid (GLYA) under nonalkaline conditions. The transition metal contained in the catalyst was found to affect its performance and selectivity for GLYA, with the Pt/Zr@NPCN catalyst showing the highest catalytic activity and selectivity. These materials were characterized using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption. The results showed that the small size of the Pt nanoparticles, the interaction between the Pt nanoparticles and the support, and the unique textural properties of the catalyst all promoted glycerol conversion and GLYA selectivity. A Zr concentration of 1.5 wt % and a support preparation temperature of 800 °C were found to provide a catalyst with the optimal performance that exhibited a glycerol conversion and selectivity for GLYA of 68.62 and 77.29%, respectively, at an initial O2 pressure of 10 bar and 60 °C after 6 h. Even after being recycled five times, this material provided a GLYA selectivity of approximately 75%, although the glycerol conversion decreased from 68 to 50%. The insights may provide new suggestions on the design of efficient support for the selective oxidation of polyols.

Abstract
Glycerol valorization towards high-value chemicals is of particular importance to increase the value chain of biodiesel production. In this study, the catalytic activity of a series of cheap Cu-based catalysts for glycerol conversion is investigated. Cu supported on activated carbon (AC, obtained through carbonization of coconut shell) exhibits outstanding catalytic activity for the selective conversion of glycerol into glycolic acid (GcA) in O2 atmosphere, affording up to 68.3 % GcA yield. The combination of experimental results with theoretical calculations reveals that glyceraldehyde is the key reaction intermediate. The high specific surface area and surface oxygenated groups of AC enable the formation of CuO nanoparticles with small size and uniform dispersion. In addition, the surface oxygen vacancy on Cu/AC might help to activate reaction intermediates, and the electron transfer from Cu to AC facilitates the oxidation of glycerol to GcA. Cu loaded onto AC also significantly inhibits C-C breakage to generate formic acid as a byproduct. This work might aid the development of approaches for glycerol application and afford profitable possibilities for sustainable biodiesel.

Abstract
In this research, a solid acid catalyst was synthesized to catalyse glycerol acetylation into acetins. The sulphated-titania catalysts were prepared via the wet impregnation method at different sulfuric acid concentrations (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) and denoted as 5SA, 10SA, 15SA, and 20SA, respectively. The synthesized catalysts were characterized using FTIR, XRD, TGA, BET, NH3-TPD, XRF, and SEM-EDX. The synthesized catalysts were tested on glycerol acetylation reaction at conditions: 0.5 g catalyst loading, 100–120 °C temperature, 1:6 glycerol/acetic acid molar ratios, and 2–4 h reaction time. The final product obtained was analysed using GC-FID. An increment in sulfuric acid concentration reduces the surface area, pore volume, and particles size. However, the increment has increased the number of active sites (Lewis acid) and strong acid strength. 15SA catalyst exhibited excellent glycerol conversion (>90%) and the highest selectivity of triacetin (42%). Besides sufficient surface area (1.9 m2 g−1) and good porosity structure, the great performance of the 15SA catalyst was attributed to its high acid site density (342.6 µmol g−1) and the high active site of metal oxide (95%).

Abstract
Nitrogen doped carbon spheres with wrinkled cages (NCSWCs), which were used for the first time as metal-free catalysts, exhibited high catalytic activity and selectivity in the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) under base-free conditions using tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as the oxidant. The mechanistic studies found that this reaction was catalyzed by the synergy between NCSWCs and TBHP. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations further suggested that the hydroperoxyl radicals from TBHP adsorbed on the carbon atoms adjacent to the graphitic N atoms are the active sites.

Abstract
Highly-dispersed Pt nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-modified CMK-3 mesoporous carbon (Pt/N-CMK-3) were first fabricated by a two-step impregnation route. The influences of N content on the catalyst porous structure, Pt nanoparticle size, surface properties, and interaction between Pt species and the support were investigated in detail using N2 sorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). The N species acted as anchoring sites for the stabilization of Pt particles. Benefiting from the formation of ultrafine metal nanoparticles, the Pt/N-CMK-3 exhibited excellent catalytic activity and selectivity for the selective hydrogenation of nitro aromatics to the corresponding anilines with hydrogen. The Pt/N-CMK-3 catalyst could be reused eight times and keep its catalytic performance.

Abstract
Glycerol remains a bottleneck for the biodiesel industry as well as an opportunity from the biorefinery perspective, having a notable reactivity as a platform chemical. In particular, glycerol ketals can be envisaged as oxygenates for fuel formulation. In this study, we have focused on the green synthesis of glycerol ketals by reacting glycerol with acyclic (acetone, butanone) and cyclic (cyclohexanone) ketones in the presence of an acid activated clay Tunisian AC in homogeneous systems under quasi-solventless conditions. These reactions were followed by on-line Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) (namely, ReactIR 10). Firstly, the contacting time was selected studying the activity, stability and chemical characteristics of a set of catalysts. The 1-h activated clay AC was further characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electronic Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). Finally, the effect of the main operational variables (catalyst concentration, reagents molar ratio, time and temperature) were checked and we reflected on adequate second-order kinetic models with partial first-order deactivation.

Abstract
A new type of base catalyst was designed and prepared by metalation of carbon nitrides with alkali metal ions. The as-prepared metalated carbon nitride composites showed enhanced basicity and efficient catalytic hydrolysis of carbonyl sulfide. The results of this study demonstrate that the metalation of carbon nitrides holds great promise for base catalysis applications.
