Single-Particle Spectroelectrochemistry: Electrochemical Approaches for Tuning Chemical Interfaces and Plasmon Damping in Single Gold Nanorods

The strong adsorption of thiol molecules on gold nanorods (AuNRs) results in localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) energy loss via chemical interface damping (CID). This study investigated the CID effect induced by thiophenol (TP) adsorption on single AuNRs and the in situ tuning of LSPR properties and chemical interfaces through electrochemical potential manipulation. The potential-dependent LSPR spectrum of bare AuNRs exhibited redshifts and line width broadening owing to the characteristics of capacitive charging, Au oxidation, and oxidation dissolution. However, TP passivation provided stability to the AuNRs from oxidation in an electrochemical environment. Electrochemical potentials induced electron donation and withdrawal, causing changes in the Fermi level of AuNRs at the Au-TP interface, thereby controlling the LSPR spectrum. Additionally, the desorption of TP molecules from the Au surface was electrochemically achieved at the anodic potentials further away from the capacitive charging region, which can be used to tune chemical interfaces and the CID process in single AuNRs.

Spectrally Resolved Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Imaging Reveals Plasmon-Mediated Chemical Transformations

Challenges investigating molecules on plasmonic nanostructures have limited understanding of these interactions. However, the chemically specific information in the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectrum can identify perturbations in the adsorbed molecules to provide insight relevant to applications in sensing, catalysis, and energy conversion. Here, we demonstrate spectrally resolved SERS imaging, to simultaneously image and collect the SERS spectra from molecules adsorbed on individual nanoparticles. We observe intensity and frequency fluctuations in the SERS signal on the time scale of tens of milliseconds from n-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) adsorbed to gold nanoparticles. The SERS signal fluctuations correlate with density functional theory calculations of radicals generated by the interaction between MBA and plasmon-generated hot electrons. Applying localization microscopy to the data provides a super-resolution spectrally resolved map that indicates the plasmonic-induced molecular charging occurs on the extremities of the nanoparticles, where the localized electromagnetic field is reported to be most intense.

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to ethylene on Cu/Cu x O-GO composites in aqueous solution

Here, we present fabrication of Graphene oxide (GO) supported Cu/Cu x O nano-electrodeposits which can efficiently and selectively electroreduce CO2 into ethylene with a faradaic efficiency (F.E) of 34% and a conversion rate of 194 mmol g-1 h-1 at -0.985 V vs. RHE. The effect of catalyst morphology, working electrode fabricational techniques, the extent of metal-GO interaction and the oxide content in Cu/Cu x O, was studied in detail so as to develop a protocol for the fabrication of an active, stable and selective catalyst for efficient electro-production of ethylene from CO2. Moreover, a detailed comparative study about the effect of the GO support, and the nature of the cathodic collection substrate used for the electro-deposition is presented.

Reusable Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Substrates Made of Silicon Nanowire Array Coated with Silver Nanoparticles Fabricated by Metal-Assisted Chemical Etching and Photonic Reduction

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has advanced over the last four decades and has become an attractive tool for highly sensitive analysis in fields such as medicine and environmental monitoring. Recently, there has been an urgent demand for reusable and long-lived SERS substrates as a means of reducing the costs associated with this technique To this end, we fabricated a SERS substrate comprising a silicon nanowire array coated with silver nanoparticles, using metal-assisted chemical etching followed by photonic reduction. The morphology and growth mechanism of the SERS substrate were carefully examined and the performance of the fabricated SERS substrate was tested using rhodamine 6G and dopamine hydrochloride. The data show that this new substrate provides an enhancement factor of nearly 1 × 10⁸. This work demonstrates that a silicon nanowire array coated with silver nanoparticles is sensitive and sufficiently robust to allow repeated reuse. These results suggest that this newly developed technique could allow SERS to be used in many commercial applications.

Controllable Preparation of SERS-Active Ag-FeS Substrates by a Cosputtering Technique

In this work, we introduced an ordered metal-semiconductor molecular system and studied the resulting surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect. Ag-FeS nanocaps with sputtered films of different thicknesses were obtained by changing the sputtering power of FeS while the sputtering power of Ag and the deposition time remained constant. When metallic Ag and the semiconductor FeS are cosputtered, the Ag film separates into Ag islands partially covered by FeS and strong coupling occurs among the Ag islands isolated by FeS, which contributes to the SERS phenomenon. We also investigated the SERS enhancement mechanism by decorating the nanocap arrays produced with different FeS sputtering powers with methylene blue (MB) probe molecules. As the FeS sputtering power increased, the SERS signal first increased and then decreased. The experimental results show that the SERS enhancement can mainly be attributed to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of the Ag nanoparticles. The coupling between FeS and Ag and the SPR displacement of Ag vary with different sputtering powers, resulting in changes in the intensity of the SERS spectra. These results demonstrate the high sensitivity of SERS substrates consisting of Ag-FeS nanocap arrays.

Tuning the surface plasmon resonance in gold nanocrystals with single layer carbon nitride

The introduction of colloidal single-layer carbon nitride (SLCN) nanosheets at the stage of the formation of Au nanocrystals (NCs) in aqueous solutions allows the surface plasmon resonance peak position of gold/SLCN composites to be tuned in a relatively broad range of 520–610 nm. The effect is believed to originate from a strong electronic interaction between Au NCs and SLCN nanosheets attached to their surface as capping ligands and resulting in a decrease of the effective electron density on the Au NC surface. The SLCN nanosheets suppress direct interparticle interactions between Au NCs prohibiting additional plasmonic features typical for the Au NC associates. Species similar to SLCN in terms of functionalities but having no conjugated aromatic system, such as polyethyleneimine, only induce aggregation of Au NCs but do not allow the main surface plasmon resonance of the NCs to be tuned demonstrating the crucial role of electronic interaction between the NC surface and the aromatic SLCN sheets for the surface plasmon resonance tuning.
