Ionic liquids intercalation in titanium carbide MXenes: A first-principles investigation

Herein, we present a density functional theory with dispersion correction (DFT-D) calculations that focus on the intercalation of ionic liquids (ILs) electrolytes into the two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2Tx MXenes. These ILs include the cation 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium (Emim+), accompanied by three distinct anions: bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (TFSA-), (fluorosulfonyl)imide (FSA-) and fluorosulfonyl(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (FTFSA-). By altering the surface termination elements, we explore the intricate geometries of IL intercalation in neutral, negative, and positive pore systems. Accurate estimation of charge transfer is achieved through five population analysis models, such as Hirshfeld, Hirshfeld-I, DDEC6 (density derived electrostatic and chemical), Bader, and VDD (voronoi deformation density) charges. In this work, we recommend the DDEC6 and Hirshfeld-I charge models, as they offer moderate values and exhibit reasonable trends. The investigation, aimed at visualizing non-covalent interactions, elucidates the role of cation-MXene and anion-MXene interactions in governing the intercalation phenomenon of ionic liquids within MXenes. The magnitude of this role depends on two factors: the specific arrangement of the cation, and the nature of the anionic species involved in the process.

Hybridization of metal-organic frameworks and MXenes: Expanding horizons in supercapacitor applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MXenes have gained prominence in the queue of advanced material research. Both materials' outstanding physical and chemical characteristics prominently promote their utilization in diverse fields, especially the electrochemical energy storage (EES) domain. The collective contribution of extremely high specific surface area (SSA), customizable pores, and abundant active sites propose MOFs as integral materials for EES devices. However, conventional MOFs endure low conductivity, constraining their utility in practical applications. The development of hybrid materials via integrating MOFs with various conductive materials stands out as an effective approach to improvising MOF's conductivity. MXenes, formulated as two-dimensional (2D) carbides and nitrides of transition metals, fall in the category of the latest 2D materials. MXenes possess extensive structural diversity, impressive conductivity, and rich surface chemical characteristics. The electrochemical characteristics of MOF@MXene hybrids outperform MOFs and MXenes individually, credited to the synergistic effect of both components. Additionally, the MOF derivatives coupled with MXene, exhibiting unique morphologies, demonstrate outstanding electrochemical performance. The important attributes of MOF@MXene hybrids, including the various synthesis protocols, have been summarized in this review. This review delves into the architectural analysis of both MOFs and MXenes, along with their advanced hybrids. Furthermore, the comprehensive survey of the latest advancements in MOF@MXene hybrids as electroactive material for supercapacitors (SCs) is the prime objective of this review. The review concludes with an elaborate discussion of the current challenges faced and the future outlooks for optimizing MOF@MXene composites.

MXenes for Wearable Physical Sensors toward Smart Healthcare

The gradual rise of personal healthcare awareness is accelerating the deployment of wearable sensors, whose ability of acquiring physiological vital signs depends on sensing materials. MXenes have distinct chemical and physical superiorities over other 2D nanomaterials for wearable sensors. This review presents a comprehensive summary of the latest advancements in MXenes-based materials for wearable physical sensors. It begins with an introduction to special structural features of MXenes for sensing performance, followed by an in-depth exploration of versatile functionalities. A detailed description of different sensing mechanisms is also included to illustrate the contribution of MXenes to the sensing performance and its improvement. In addition, the real-world applications of MXenes-based physical sensors for monitoring different physiological signs are included as well. The remaining challenges of MXenes-based materials for wearable physical sensors and their promising opportunities are finally narrated, in conjunction with a prospective for future development.

Emerging Two-Dimensional Materials for Proton-Based Energy Storage

The rapid diffusion kinetics and smallest ion radius make protons the ideal cations toward the ultimate energy storage technology combining the ultrafast charging capabilities of supercapacitors and the high energy densities of batteries. Despite the concept existing for centuries, the lack of satisfactory electrode materials hinders its practical development. Recently, the rapid advancement of the emerging two-dimensional (2D) materials, characterized by their ultrathin morphology, interlayer van der Waals gaps, and distinctive electrochemical properties, injects promises into future proton-based energy storage systems. In this perspective, we comprehensively summarize the current advances in proton-based energy storage based on 2D materials. We begin by providing an overview of proton-based energy storage systems, including proton batteries, pseudocapacitors and electrical double layer capacitors. We then elucidate the fundamental knowledge about proton transport characteristics, including in electrolytes, at electrolyte/electrode interfaces, and within electrode materials, particularly in 2D material systems. We comprehensively summarize specific cases of 2D materials as proton electrodes, detailing their design concepts, proton transport mechanism and electrochemical performance. Finally, we provide insights into the prospects of proton-based energy storage systems, emphasizing the importance of rational design of 2D electrode materials and matching electrolyte systems.

Engineered Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Dichalcogenides for Energy Conversion and Storage

Designing efficient and cost-effective materials is pivotal to solving the key scientific and technological challenges at the interface of energy, environment, and sustainability for achieving NetZero. Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) represent a unique class of materials that have catered to a myriad of energy conversion and storage (ECS) applications. Their uniqueness arises from their ultra-thin nature, high fractions of atoms residing on surfaces, rich chemical compositions featuring diverse metals and chalcogens, and remarkable tunability across multiple length scales. Specifically, the rich electronic/electrical, optical, and thermal properties of 2D TMDs have been widely exploited for electrochemical energy conversion (e.g., electrocatalytic water splitting), and storage (e.g., anodes in alkali ion batteries and supercapacitors), photocatalysis, photovoltaic devices, and thermoelectric applications. Furthermore, their properties and performances can be greatly boosted by judicious structural and chemical tuning through phase, size, composition, defect, dopant, topological, and heterostructure engineering. The challenge, however, is to design and control such engineering levers, optimally and specifically, to maximize performance outcomes for targeted applications. In this review we discuss, highlight, and provide insights on the significant advancements and ongoing research directions in the design and engineering approaches of 2D TMDs for improving their performance and potential in ECS applications.

Research progress of functional MXene in inhibiting lithium/zinc metal battery dendrites

The layered two-dimensional (2D) MXene has great promise for applications in supercapacitors, batteries, and electrocatalysis due to its large layer spacing, excellent electrical conductivity, good chemical stability, good hydrophilicity, and adjustable layer spacing. Since its discovery in 2011, MXene has been widely used to inhibit the growth of anode dendrites of lithium metal. In the past two years, researchers have used MXene and MXene based materials in the anodes of zinc metal batteries and zinc ion hybrid capacitors, respectively, and made a series of important progressive steps in the inhibition of zinc dendrite growth. In this review, we summarize the research progress of functional MXenes in inhibiting the growth of lithium and zinc metal anode dendrites, and provide a brief overview and outlook on the current challenges of MXene materials, which will help researchers to further understand the methods and their mechanisms, thus to develop novel electrochemical energy storage systems to meet the needs of rapidly developing electric vehicles and wearable/portable electronics.

Oxide Derivatives of Nb2CTx MXene and Their Application as Electron Transport Layers in Perovskite Solar Cells: Unraveling the Oxidation Process and Functionalization

In the realm of photovoltaic research, 2D transition metal carbides (MXenes) have gained significant interest due to their exceptional photoelectric capabilities. However, the instability of MXenes due to oxidation has a direct impact on their practical applications. In this work, the oxidation process of Nb2CTx MXene in aqueous systems is methodically simulated at the atomic level and nanosecond timescales, which elucidates the structural variations influenced by the synergistic effects of water and dissolved oxygen, predicting a transition from metal to semiconductor with 44% C atoms replaced by O atoms in Nb2CTx. Moreover, Nb2CTx with varying oxidation degrees is utilized as electron transport layers (ETLs) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Favorable energy level alignments with superior electron transfer capability are achieved by controlled oxidation. By further exploring the composites of Nb2CTx to its derivatives, the strong interaction of the nano-composites is demonstrated to be more effective for electron transport, thus the corresponding PSC achieves a better performance with long-term stability compared with the widely used ETLs like SnO2. This work unravels the oxidation dynamics of Nb2CTx and provides a promising approach to designing ETL by exploiting MXenes to their derivatives for photovoltaic technologies.

Recent Progress in Thermoplastic Polyurethane/MXene Nanocomposites: Preparation, Flame-Retardant Properties and Applications

MXene, a promising two-dimensional nanomaterial, exhibits significant potential across various applications due to its multilayered structure, metal-like conductivity, solution processability, and surface functionalization capabilities. These remarkable properties facilitate the integration of MXenes and MXene-based materials into high-performance polymer composites. Regarding this, a comprehensive and well-structured up-to-date review is essential to provide an in-depth understanding of MXene/thermoplastic polyurethane nanocomposites. This review discusses various synthetic and modification methods of MXenes, current research progress and future potential on MXene/thermoplastic polyurethane nanocomposites, existing knowledge gaps, and further development. The main focus is on discussing strategies for modifying MXene-based compounds and their flame-retardant efficiency, with particular emphasis on understanding their mechanisms within the TPU matrix. Ultimately, this review addresses current challenges and suggests future directions for the practical utilization of these materials.

Highly capacitive MXene film by incorporating poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) hollow spheres prepared through an interfacial oxidation polymerization

Sheets stacking of Ti3C2Tx MXene dramatically reduces the ion-accessible sites and brings a sluggish reaction kinetics. While introducing transitional metal oxides or polymers in the MXene films could partially alleviate such issue, their enhanced performances are realized at the expense of electrode conductivity or cycling stability. Herein, we report an alternative spacer of conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) hollow spheres (HSs) which are fabricated by a facile template-assisted interfacial polymerization. The Fe3+ ions electrostatically adsorbed on the -SO3H groups of the sulfonated polystyrene spheres (S-PS) initiate the polymerization of uniform PEDOT shell, yielding uniform PEDOT HSs after dissolving the S-PS core. Introducing these PEDOT HSs in the MXene film generates the highly flexible MXene-PEDOT (MP) films featuring hierarchically porous network and high conductivity (283 S cm-1). Consequently, specific capacitance of 218 F g-1 at 3  mV s-1, along with a forty-folds decrease in relaxation time constant (1.0 vs 39.8 s) has been achieved. Moreover, the MP film also exhibits nearly thickness-independent capacitive performances with film thickness in the range of 10-46 μm. A maximal energy density of 21.2 μWh cm-2 at 1015 μW cm-2 together with 92 % capacitance retention over 5000 cycles are achieved for the MP-based solid-state supercapacitor. The intrinsic high conductivity, excellent mechanical flexibility and good structure integrity are responsible for such outstanding electrochemical behaviors.

Exploring the properties of Zr2CO2/GaS van der Waals heterostructures for optoelectronic applications

We investigate the structural, electronic, and optical properties of eight possible Zr2CO2/GaS van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures using first-principles calculations based on a hybrid functional. These structures display favorable stability, indicated by matching crystal structures and negative formation energies. In all considered configurations, these heterostructures act as indirect band gap semiconductors with a type-II band alignment, allowing efficient electron-hole separation. Optical studies reveal their suitability for optoelectronic applications. Zr2CO2/GaS under 4% biaxial compressive strain meets the criteria for photocatalytic water splitting, suggesting their potential for electronic and optoelectronic devices in the visible spectrum. Our findings present prospects for advanced photocatalytic materials and optical devices.

V-MXenes for Energy Storage/Conversion Applications

MXenes, a two-dimensional (2D) material, exhibit excellent optical, electrical, chemical, mechanical, and electrochemical properties. Titanium-based MXene (Ti-MXene) has been extensively studied and serves as the foundation for 2D MXenes. However, other transition metals possess the potential to offer excellent properties in various applications. This comprehensive review aims to provide an overview of the properties, challenges, key findings, and applications of less-explored vanadium-based MXenes (V-MXenes) and their composites. The current trends in V-MXene and their composites for energy storage and conversion applications have been thoroughly summarized. Overall, this review offers valuable insights, identifies potential opportunities, and provides key suggestions for future advancements in the MXenes and energy storage/conversion applications.

MXene materials in electrochemical energy storage systems

MXenes, due to their unique geometric structure, rich elemental composition, and intrinsic physicochemical properties, have multi-functional applications. In the field of electrochemical energy storage, MXenes can be used as active components, conductive agents, supports, and catalysts in ion-intercalated batteries, metal-sulfur batteries, and supercapacitors. The electrochemical performance of MXene materials is closely related to their distinctive physical and chemical properties, which depend on their geometry, surface functional groups, and elemental composition. How to regulate MXene materials to optimize electrochemical functions is a key scientific challenge. Herein, we correlated the function of MXene materials with their interlayer structure, surface functional groups, and specific catalytic sites, analyzed the electrochemical function of MXene materials, and showed how to design the electrochemical function of MXene materials based on ion/electron transport. Additionally, this feature article provides an outlook on the opportunities and challenges for MXenes, offering theoretical and technical guidance on using MXene materials in energy storage systems.

Extraordinary Structural Reconstruction of Nanolaminated Ta2FeC MAX Phase for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Performance

Renewable energy technologies, such as water splitting, heavily depend on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Nanolaminated ternary compounds, referred to as MAX phases, show great promise for creating efficient electrocatalysts for OER. However, their limited intrinsic oxidative resistance hinders the utilization of conductivity in Mn+1Xn layers, leading to reduced activity. In this study, a method is proposed to improve the poor inoxidizability of MAX phases by carefully adjusting the elemental composition between Mn+1Xn layers and single-atom-thick A layers. The resulting Ta2FeC catalyst demonstrates superior performance compared to conventional Fe/C-based catalysts with a remarkable record-low overpotential of 247 mV (@10 mA cm-2) and sustained activity for over 240 h. Notably, during OER processing, the single-atom-thick Fe layer undergoes self-reconstruction and enrichment from the interior of the Ta2FeC MAX phase toward its surface, forming a Ta2FeC@Ta2C@FeOOH heterostructure. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, this study has found that the incorporation of Ta2FeC@Ta2C not only enhances the conductivity of FeOOH but also reduces the covalency of Fe─O bonds, thus alleviating the oxidation of Fe3+ and O2-. This implies that the Ta2FeC@Ta2C@FeOOH heterostructure experiences less lattice oxygen loss during the OER process compared to pure FeOOH, leading to significantly improved stability. These results highlight promising avenues for further exploration of MAX phases by strategically engineering M- and A-site engineering through multi-metal substitution, to develop M2AX@M2X@AOOH-based catalysts for oxygen evolution.

Advanced photocatalytic disinfection mechanisms and their challenges

Currently, microbial contamination issues have globally brought out a huge health threat to human beings and animals. To be specific, microorganisms including bacteria and viruses display durable ecological toxicity and various diseases to aquatic organisms. In the past decade, the photocatalytic microorganism inactivation technique has attracted more and more concern owing to its green, low-cost, and sustainable process. A variety kinds of photocatalysts have been employed for killing microorganisms in the natural environment. However, two predominant shortcomings including low activity of photocatalysts and diverse impacts of water characteristics are still displayed in the current photocatalytic disinfection system. So far, various strategies to improve the inherent activity of photocatalysts. Other than the modification of photocatalysts, the optimization of environments of water bodies has been also conducted to enhance microorganisms inactivation. In this mini-review, we outlined the recent progress in photocatalytic sterilization of microorganisms. Meanwhile, the relevant methods of photocatalyst modification and the influences of water body characteristics on disinfection ability were thoroughly elaborated. More importantly, the relationships between strategies for constructing advanced photocatalytic microorganism inactivation systems and improved performance were correlated. Finally, the perspectives on the prospects and challenges of photocatalytic disinfection were presented. We sincerely hope that this critical mini-review can inspire some new concepts and ideas in designing advanced photocatalytic disinfection systems.

Two-Dimensional MXene-Based Electrocatalysts: Challenges and Opportunities

MXene, regarded as cutting-edge two-dimensional (2D) materials, have been widely explored in various applications due to their remarkable flexibility, high specific surface area, good mechanical strength, and interesting electrical conductivity. Recently, 2D MXene has served as a ideal platform for the design and development of electrocatalysts with high activity, selectivity, and stability. This review article provides a detailed description of the structural engineering of MXene-based electrocatalysts and summarizes the uses of 2D MXene in hydrogen evolution reactions, nitrogen reduction reactions, oxygen evolution reactions, oxygen reduction reactions, and methanol/ethanol oxidation. Then, key issues and prospects for 2D MXene as a next-generation platform in fundamental research and real-world electrocatalysis applications are discussed. Emphasis will be given to material design and enhancement techniques. Finally, future research directions are suggested to improve the efficiency of MXene-based electrocatalysts.

MXene: A Roadmap to Sustainable Energy Management, Synthesis Routes, Stabilization, and Economic Assessment

MXenes with their wide range of tunability and good surface chemistry provide unique and distinctive characteristics offering potential employment in various aspects of energy management applications. These high-performance materials have attracted considerable attention in recent decades due to their outstanding characteristics. In the literature, most of the work is related to specific methods for the preparation of MXenes. In this Review, we present a detailed discussion on the synthesis of MXenes through different etching routes involving acids, such as hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, and lithium fluoride, and non-acidic alkaline solution, electrochemical, and molten salt methods. Furthermore, a concise overview of the different structural, optical, electronic, and magnetic properties of MXenes is provided corresponding to their role in supporting high thermal, chemical, mechanical, environmental, and electrochemical stability. Additionally, the role of MXenes in maintaining the thermal management performance of photovoltaic thermal systems (PV/T), wearable light heaters, solar water desalination, batteries, and supercapacitors is also briefly discussed. A techno-economic and life cycle analysis of MXenes is provided to analyze their sustainability, scalability, and commercialization to facilitate a comprehensive array of energy management systems. Lastly, the technology readiness level of MXenes is defined, and future recommendations for MXenes are provided for their further utilization in niche applications. The present work strives to link the chemistry of MXenes to process economics for energy management applications.

Photon-beam-inducing synthesis of a tunable porous graphene/Ti3C2Txheterostructure for energy conversion-storage system

Flexible electronic device requires a novel micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) energy conversion-storage system based on two-dimensional (2D) materials to solve the problems of stiffness and complexity. Herein, we report a novel catalytic introduction method of graphene with adjustable porosity by high-energy photon beam. The graphene/Ti3C2Txheterostructure was constructed by electrostatic self-assembly, has a high cycle life (98% after 8000 cycles), energy density (11.02 mWh cm-3), and demonstrate excellent flexible alternating current line-filtering performance. The phase angle of -79.8° at 120 Hz and a resistance-capacitance constant of 0.068 ms. Furthermore, the porous graphene/Ti3C2Txstructures produced by multiple catalytic inductions allowed ions to deeply penetrate the electrode, thereby increasing the stacking density. The special 'pore-layer nesting' graphene structure with adjustable pores effectively increased the specific surface area, and its superior matching with electrolyte solutions greatly improved surface-active site utilization. This work offers an alternative strategy for fabricating a 2D heterostructure for an MSC.

2D MXene-Based Nanoscale Materials for Electrochemical Sensing Toward the Detection of Hazardous Pollutants: A Perspective

MXenes (Mn+1XnTx), a subgroup of 2-dimensional (2D) materials, specifically comprise transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides. They exhibit exceptional electrocatalytic and photocatalytic properties, making them well-suited for the detection and removal of pollutants from aqueous environments. Because of their high surface area and remarkable properties, they are being utilized in various applications, including catalysis, sensing, and adsorption, to combat pollution and mitigate its adverse effects. Different characterization techniques like XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-Visible spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy have been used for the structural elucidation of 2D MXene. Current responses against applied potential were measured during the electrochemical sensing of the hazardous pollutants in an aqueous system using a variety of electroanalytical techniques, including differential pulse voltammetry, amperometry, square wave anodic stripping voltammetry, etc. In this review, a comprehensive discussion on structural patterns, synthesis, properties of MXene and their application for electrochemical detection of lethal pollutants like hydroquionone, phenol, catechol, mercury and lead, etc. are presented. This review will be helpful to critically understand the methods of synthesis and application of MXenes for the removal of environmental pollutants.

Revealing the Two-Stage Charging Process in Sulfuric Acid Electrolyte by Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Two-dimensional MXene materials perform excellently in supercapacitor applications, but self-stacking and overlap limit their applications. Constructing a reasonable layered structure by combining MXene and graphene can effectively inhibit the restacking and overlap of MXene and improve the performance of supercapacitors. In this work, we studied the energy storage performance of a conventional MXene electrode and MXene/graphene composite electrode in sulfuric acid aqueous electrolyte by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and analyzed their energy storage mechanisms. The simulation results reveal that the MXene/graphene composite electrode showed faster charge-discharge speed and larger capacity and had more obvious advantages as a cathode. The charging process of the composite cathode can be divided into two stages. In the first stage, SO42- and H3O+ enter the electrode as a whole in a nearly 1:2 ratio, and a unique three-layer structure is formed in the graphene area, while a large number of HSO4- leaves the electrode. In the second stage, SO42- with a part of H3O+ (ratio of 2:2 to 2:3) leave the electrode, and the three-layer structure is gradually destroyed. The cooperation of these two stages leads to a particular "concave" in the total energy change of the composite cathode. The introduction of graphene has brought about changes in ion distribution, migration mechanism, and energy change, making the MXene/graphene cathode show significant advantages in energy storage. This work is of great significance for understanding the microscopic energy storage mechanism of MXene/graphene-based electrodes.

Tailoring Alkalized and Oxidized V2CTx as Anode Materials for High-Performance Lithium Ion Batteries

V2CTx MXenes have gained considerable attention in lithium ion batteries (LIBs) owing to their special two-dimensional (2D) construction with large lithium storage capability. However, engineering high-capacity V2CTx MXenes is still a great challenge due to the limited interlayer space and poor surface terminations. In view of this, alkalized and oxidized V2CTx MXenes (OA-V2C) are envisaged. SEM characterization confirms the accordion-like layered morphology of OA-V2C. The XPS technique illustrates that undergoing alkalized and oxidized treatment, V2CTX MXene replaces -F and -OH with -O groups, which are more conducive to pseudocapacitive properties as well as Na ion diffusion, providing more active sites for ion storage in OA-V2C. Accordingly, the electrochemical performance of OA-V2C as anode materials for LIBs is evaluated in this work, showing excellent performance with high reversible capacity (601 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 over 500 cycles), competitive rate performance (222.2 mAh g-1 and 152.8 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 and 5 A g-1), as well as durable long-term cycling property (252 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 undergoing 5000 cycles). It is noted that the intercalation of Na+ ions and oxidation co-modification greatly reduces F surface termination and concurrently increases interlayer spacing in OA-V2C, significantly expediting ion/electron transportation and providing an efficient way to maximize the performance of MXenes in LIBs. This innovative refinement methodology paves the way for building high-performance V2CTx MXenes anode materials in LIBs.

Roles of Two-Dimensional Materials in Antibiofilm Applications: Recent Developments and Prospects

Biofilm-associated infections pose a significant challenge in healthcare, constituting 80% of bacterial infections and often leading to persistent, chronic conditions. Conventional antibiotics struggle with efficacy against these infections due to the high tolerance and resistance induced by bacterial biofilm barriers. Two-dimensional nanomaterials, such as those from the graphene family, boron nitride, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), MXene, and black phosphorus, hold immense potential for combating biofilms. These nanomaterial-based antimicrobial strategies are novel tools that show promise in overcoming resistant bacteria and stubborn biofilms, with the ability to circumvent existing drug resistance mechanisms. This review comprehensively summarizes recent developments in two-dimensional nanomaterials, as both therapeutics and nanocarriers for precision antibiotic delivery, with a specific focus on nanoplatforms coupled with photothermal/photodynamic therapy in the elimination of bacteria and penetrating and/or ablating biofilm. This review offers important insight into recent advances and current limitations of current antibacterial nanotherapeutic approaches, together with a discussion on future developments in the field, for the overall benefit of public health.

Metal-organic framework/Nb4C3Tx MXene composites for ultrasensitive detection of dopamine

An easy, in situ growth approach led to the formation of several composites of metal-organic framewoks and Nb4C3Tx MXenes mixed intimately at the submicron scale. The high affinity of MXene surface for dopamine, enhanced by a nanostructuration induced by MOFs, resulted in superior sensing performances. The system exhibited good linearity over the 1-100 nM range, with an excellent limit of detection of 0.2 nM.

Beyond metals: theoretical discovery of semiconducting MAX phases and their potential application in thermoelectrics

MAX phase is a family of ceramic compounds, typically known for their metallic properties. However, we show here that some of them may be narrow bandgap semiconductors. Using a series of first-principles calculations, we have investigated the electronic structures of 861 dynamically stable MAX phases. Notably, Sc2SC, Y2SC, Y2SeC, Sc3AuC2, and Y3AuC2 have been identified as semiconductors with band gaps ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 eV. Furthermore, we have assessed the thermodynamic stability of these systems by generating ternary phase diagrams utilizing evolutionary algorithm techniques. Their dynamic stabilities are confirmed by phonon calculations. Additionally, we have explored the potential thermoelectric efficiencies of these materials by combining Boltzmann transport theory with first-principles calculations. The relaxation times are estimated using scattering theory. The zT coefficients for the aforementioned systems fall within the range of 0.5 to 2.5 at temperatures spanning from 300 to 700 K, indicating their suitability for high-temperature thermoelectric applications.

Dual Redox Reaction Sites for Pseudocapacitance Based on Ti and -P Functional Groups of Ti3C2PBrx MXene

MXenes have extensive applications due to their different properties determined by intrinsic structures and various functional groups. Exploring different functional groups of MXenes leads to improved performance or potential applications. In this work, we prepared new Ti3C2PBrx (x=0.4-0.6) MXene with phosphorus functional groups (-P) through a two-step gas-phase reaction. The acquisition of -P is achieved by replacing bromine functional groups (-Br) of Ti3C2Br2 in the phosphorus vapor. After -Br is replaced with -P, Ti3C2PBrx MXene shows an improved areal capacitance (360 mF cm-2) at 20 mV s-1 compared with Ti3C2Br2 MXene (102 mF cm-2). At a current density of 5 mA cm-2 after 10000 cycles, the capacitance retention of Ti3C2PBrx MXene has not decreased. The pseudocapacitive enhancement mechanism has been discovered based on the dual redox sites of the functional groups -P and Ti.

Blocking Interfacial Proton Transport via Self-Assembled Monolayer for Hydrogen Evolution-Free Zinc Batteries

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising next-generation energy storage devices, yet suffer from the issues of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and intricate side reactions on the Zn anode surface. The hydrogen (H)-bond networks play a critical role in interfacial proton transport that may closely relate to HER but are rarely investigated. Herein, we report a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) strategy which is constructed by anchoring ionic liquid cations on Ti3C2Tx substrate for HER-free Zn anode. Molecule dynamics simulations reveal that the rationally designed SAM with a high coordination number of water molecules (25-27, 4-6 for Zn2+) largely reduces the interfacial densities of H2O molecules, therefore breaking the connectivity of H-bond networks and blocking proton transport on the interface, by which the HER is suppressed. Then, a series of in situ characterizations demonstrate that negligible amounts of H2 gas are collected from the Zn@SAM-MXene anode. Consequently, the symmetric cell enables a long-cycling life of 3000 h at 1 mA cm-2 and 1000 h at 5 mA cm-2. More significantly, the stable Zn@SAM-MXene films are successfully used for coin full cells showing high-capacity retention of over 94 % after 1000 cycles and large-area (10×5 cm2) pouch cells with desired performance.

Tailoring the ion storage of MXene by aramid nanofibers towards self-standing electrodes for flexible solid-state supercapacitors

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) are a class of 2D nanomaterials that can offer excellent properties for high-performance supercapacitors. Nevertheless, irreversible restacking of MXene sheets decreases the interlayer spacing, which inhibits the ion intercalation between the MXene nanosheets and finally deteriorates the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. Herein, aramid nanofibers (ANFs) are mixed with Ti3C2TxMXene to prepare MXene/ANFs composite films. The restacking of MXene sheets is inhibited by the electrostatic repulsion between ANFs and MXene. The ANFs act as intercalation agents to increase the interlayer spacing of the composite films, which can improve the ion storage ability of supercapacitors. Furthermore, the ANFs enhance the mechanical strength of the composite films due to the strong hydrogen bonding interaction and nanomechanical interlocking between ANFs and MXene, endowing the composite films with self-standing property. The resultant composite films are used as electrodes for flexible solid-state supercapacitors to achieve high specific capacitance (996.5 mF cm-2at 5 mV s-1) and outstanding cycling stability. Thus, this work provides a potential strategy to regulate the properties of 2D nanomaterials, which may expand the application of them in energy storage, ionic separation, osmotic energy conversion and beyond.

Covalent Bonding of MXene/COF Heterojunction for Ultralong Cycling Li-Ion Battery Electrodes

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as promising renewable electrode materials for LIBs and gained significant attention, but their capacity has been limited by the densely packed 2D layer structures, low active site availability, and poor electronic conductivity. Combining COFs with high-conductivity MXenes is an effective strategy to enhance their electrochemical performance. Nevertheless, simply gluing them without conformal growth and covalent linkage restricts the number of redox-active sites and the structural stability of the composite. Therefore, in this study, a covalently assembled 3D COF on Ti3C2 MXenes (Ti3C2@COF) is synthesized and serves as an ultralong cycling electrode material for LIBs. Due to the covalent bonding between the COF and Ti3C2, the Ti3C2@COF composite exhibits excellent stability, good conductivity, and a unique 3D cavity structure that enables stable Li+ storage and rapid ion transport. As a result, the Ti3C2-supported 3D COF nanosheets deliver a high specific capacity of 490 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, along with an ultralong cyclability of 10,000 cycles at 1 A g-1. This work may inspire a wide range of 3D COF designs for high-performance electrode materials.

Effect of Surface Functional Groups on the Electronic Behavior and Optical Spectra of Mn2N Based MXenes

The extensive applications of MXenes, a novel type of layered materials known for their favorable characteristics, have sparked significant interest. This research focuses on investigating the influence of surface functionalization on the behavior of Mn2NTx (Tx=O2, F2) MXenes monolayers using the "Density functional theory (DFT) based full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave (FP-LAPW)" method. We elucidate the differences in the physical properties of Mn2NTx through the influence of F and O surface functional groups. We found that O-termination results in half-metallic behavior, whereas the F-termination evolves metallic characteristics within these MXene systems. Similarly, surface termination has effectively influenced their optical absorption efficiency. For instance, Mn2NO2 and Mn2NF2 effectively absorb UV light ~50.15×104 cm-1 and 37.71×104 cm-1, respectively. Additionally, they demonstrated prominent refraction and reflection characteristics, which are comprehensively discussed in the present work. Our predictions offer valuable perspectives into the optical and electronic characteristics of Mn2NTx-based MXenes, presenting the promising potential for implementing them in diverse optoelectronic devices.

A DFT study on regulating the active center of v-Ti2XT2 MXene through surface modification for efficient nitrogen fixation

The electrochemical conversion of nitrogen to ammonia provides an encouraging method to substitute the traditional Haber-Bosch process, owing to its high efficiency and mild reaction conditions. The search for high-performance catalysts and comprehension of catalytic mechanisms remains significant challenges. Herein, we conduct a systematic theoretical calculation of the NRR performance and mechanism of 24 Ti2XT2 (X = B, C, N; T = F, Cl, Br, I, O, S, Se, Te) MXenes with a T-vacancy to explore the influence of surface functional terminations and non-metallic center elements. Our findings demonstrate that surface functionalization significantly reduces the limiting potential by altering the rate-determining step. This change ranges from -1.24 V (Ti2NF2) to -0.21 V (Ti2BSe2), signifying the remarkable efficacy of modification of the surrounding environment of the exposed transition metal active center in promoting electrocatalytic performance. Detailed investigation of the charge density difference and orbital interaction reveals that the different NRR performance originates from the surface termination and non-metallic atoms regulate the electronic properties of the active Ti atoms. We also introduce the free energy change of *NNH2 (ΔG*NNH2) as a descriptor to predict the performance of NRR, which exhibits satisfactory linear relationship with free energy change of different intermediates and displays favourable volcano plot with limiting potential. Moreover, we highlight the pivotal role of work function in tuning the energy barrier of the rate-determining step, which can be regulated through the surface modification of MXenes. Our study not only offers a comprehensive understanding of the crucial impact of surface modification on the catalytic activities of defective MXenes, but also provides a rational perspective for designing efficient NRR catalysts.

Nano-enabled smart and functional materials toward human well-being and sustainable developments

Fabrication and operation on increasingly smaller dimensions have been highly integrated with the development of smart and functional materials, which are key to many technological innovations to meet economic and societal needs. Along with researchers worldwide, the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) has long realized the synergetic interplays between nanotechnology and functional materials and designated 'Smart & Functional Materials' as one of its four major research themes. Thus far, WIN researchers have utilized the properties of smart polymers, nanoparticles, and nanocomposites to develop active materials, membranes, films, adhesives, coatings, and devices with novel and improved properties and capabilities. In this review article, we aim to highlight some of the recent developments on the subject, including our own research and key research literature, in the context of the UN Sustainability development goals.

MXene Key Composites: A New Arena for Gas Sensors

With the development of science and technology, the scale of industrial production continues to grow, and the types and quantities of gas raw materials used in industrial production and produced during the production process are also constantly increasing. These gases include flammable and explosive gases, and even contain toxic gases. Therefore, it is very important and necessary for gas sensors to detect and monitor these gases quickly and accurately. In recent years, a new two-dimensional material called MXene has attracted widespread attention in various applications. Their abundant surface functional groups and sites, excellent current conductivity, tunable surface chemistry, and outstanding stability make them promising for gas sensor applications. Since the birth of MXene materials, researchers have utilized the efficient and convenient solution etching preparation, high flexibility, and easily functionalize MXene with other materials to prepare composites for gas sensing. This has opened a new chapter in high-performance gas sensing materials and provided a new approach for advanced sensor research. However, previous reviews on MXene-based composite materials in gas sensing only focused on the performance of gas sensing, without systematically explaining the gas sensing mechanisms generated by different gases, as well as summarizing and predicting the advantages and disadvantages of MXene-based composite materials. This article reviews the latest progress in the application of MXene-based composite materials in gas sensing. Firstly, a brief summary was given of the commonly used methods for preparing gas sensing device structures, followed by an introduction to the key attributes of MXene related to gas sensing performance. This article focuses on the performance of MXene-based composite materials used for gas sensing, such as MXene/graphene, MXene/Metal oxide, MXene/Transition metal sulfides (TMDs), MXene/Metal-organic framework (MOF), MXene/Polymer. It summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of MXene composite materials with different composites and discusses the possible gas sensing mechanisms of MXene-based composite materials for different gases. Finally, future directions and inroads of MXenes-based composites in gas sensing are presented and discussed.

Cutting-edge developments in MXene-derived functional hybrid nanostructures: A promising frontier for next-generation water purification membranes

A novel family of multifunctional nanomaterials called MXenes is quickly evolving, and it has potential applications that are comparable to those of graphene. This article provides a current explanation of the design and performance assessment of MXene-based membranes. The production of MXenes nanosheets are first described, with an emphasis on exfoliation, dispersion stability, and processability, which are essential elements for membrane construction. Further, critical discussion is also given to MXenes potential applications in Vacuum assisted filtration, casting method, Hot press method, electrospinning and electrochemical deposition and layer-by-layer assembly for the creation of MXene and MXene derived nanocomposite membranes. Additionally, the discussion is carried forward to give an insight to the modification methods for the construction of MXene-based membrane are described in the literature, including pure or intercalated nanomaterials, surface modifiers and miscellaneous two-dimensional nanomaterials. Furthermore, the review article highlights the potential utilization of MXene and MXene based membranes in separation and purification processes including removal of small organic molecules, heavy metals, oil-water separation and desalination. Finally, the perspective use of MXenes strong catalytic activity and electrical conductivity for specialized applications that are difficult for other nanomaterials to accomplish are discussed in conclusion and future prospectus section of the manuscript. Overall, important information is given to help the communities of materials science and membranes to better understand the potential of MXenes for creating cutting-edge separation and purification membranes.

Self-adhesive, conductive, and multifunctional hybrid hydrogel for flexible/wearable electronics based on triboelectric and piezoresistive sensor

Flexible electronics are highly developed nowadays in human-machine interfaces (HMI). However, challenges such as lack of flexibility, conductivity, and versatility always greatly hindered flexible electronics applications. In this work, a multifunctional hybrid hydrogel (H-hydrogel) was prepared by combining two kinds of 1D polymer chains (polyacrylamide and polydopamine) and two kinds of 2D nanosheets (Ti3C2Tx MXene and graphene oxide nanosheets) as quadruple crosslinkers. The introduced Ti3C2Tx MXene and graphene oxide nanosheets are bonded with the PAM and PDA polymer chains by hydrogen bonds. This unique crosslinking and stable structure endow the H-hydrogel with advantages such as good flexibility, electrical conductivity, self-adhesion, and mechanical robustness. The two kinds of nanosheets not only improved the mechanical strength and conductivity of the H-hydrogel, but also helped to form the double electric layers (DELs) between the nanosheets and the bulk-free water phase inside the H-hydrogel. When utilized as the electrode of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), high electrical output performances were realized due to the dynamic balance of the DELs between the nanosheets and the H-hydrogel's inside water molecules. Moreover, flexible sensors, including triboelectric, and strain/pressure sensors, were achieved for human motion detection at low frequencies. This hydrogel is promising for HMI and e-skin.

Recent Advancement in Emerging MXene-Based Photocatalytic Membrane for Revolutionizing Wastewater Treatment

MXene-based photocatalytic membranes provide significant benefits for wastewater treatment by effectively combining membrane separation and photocatalytic degradation processes. MXene represents a pioneering 2D photocatalyst with a variable elemental composition, substantial surface area, abundant surface terminations, and exceptional photoelectric performance, offering significant advantages in producing high-performance photocatalytic membranes. In this review, an in-depth overview of the latest scientific progress in MXene-based photocatalytic membranes is provided. Initially, a brief introduction to the structure and photocatalytic capabilities of MXene is provided, highlighting their pivotal role in promoting the photocatalytic process. Subsequently, in pursuit of the optimal MXene-based photocatalytic membrane, critical factors such as the morphology, hydrophilicity, and stability of MXenes are meticulously taken into account. Various preparation strategies for MXene-based photocatalytic membranes, including blending, vacuum filtration, and dip coating, are also discussed. Furthermore, the application and mechanism of MXene-based photocatalytic membranes in micropollutant removal, oil-water separation, and antibacterial are examined. Lastly, the challenges in the development and practical application of MXene-based photocatalytic membranes, as well as their future research direction are delineated.

Temperature Evolution of Composition, Thermal, Electrical and Magnetic Properties of Ti3C2Tx-MXene

MXenes are a family of two-dimensional nanomaterials. Titanium carbide MXene (Ti3C2Tx-MXene), reported in 2011, is the first inorganic compound reported among the MXene family. In the present work, we report on the study of the composition and various physical properties of Ti3C2Tx-MXene nanomaterial, as well as their temperature evolution, to consider MXenes for space applications. X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and mass spectroscopy measurements confirmed the structure and terminating groups of the MXene surface, revealing a predominant single OH layer character. The temperature dependence of the specific heat shows a Debye-like character in the measured range of 2 K-300 K with a linear part below 10 K, characteristic of conduction electrons of metallic materials. The electron density of states (DOS) calculations for Ti3C2OH-MXene reveal a significant DOS value at the Fermi level, with a large slope, confirming its metallic character, which is consistent with the experimental findings. The temperature dependence of electrical resistivity of the MXene samples was tested for a wide temperature range (3 K-350 K) and shows a decrease on lowering temperature with an upturn at low temperatures, where negative magnetoresistance is observed. The magnetoresistance versus field is approximately linear and increases its magnitude with decreasing temperature. The magnetization curves are straight lines with temperature-independent positive slopes, indicating Pauli paramagnetism due to conduction electrons.

Preparation of Two-Dimensional Polyaniline Sheets with High Crystallinity via Surfactant Interface Self-Assembly and Their Encryption Application

In recent years in the field of traditional materials, traditional polyaniline has faced a number of scientific problems such as an irregular morphology, high difficulty in crystallization, and difficulty in forming an ordered structure compared to the corresponding inorganic materials. In response to these urgent issues, this study determines how to prepare a highly ordered structure in polyaniline formed at the gas-liquid interface. By dynamically arranging aniline monomers into a highly ordered structure with sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) surfactant, aniline polymerization is initiated at the gas-liquid interface, resulting in two-dimensional polyaniline crystal sheets with a highly ordered structure. By elucidating the microstructure, crystallization process, and molecular structure of the two-dimensional polyaniline crystal sheets, the practical application of polyaniline as an encryption label in the field of electrochromism has been further expanded, thus making polyaniline widely used in the field of information encryption. Therefore, the synthesis of flaky polyaniline crystal sheets has a role in scientific research and practical application, which will arouse the interest and exploration of researchers.

"Sweat-Driven" MXene Composites with Energy-Storage and Thermal-Management Multifunctions: A Platform for Versatile Electronic Skins

Most exogenous electronic skins (e-skins) currently face challenges of complex structure and poor compatibility with the human body. Utilizing human secretions (e.g., sweat) to develop e-skins is an effective solution strategy. Here, a new kind of "sweat-driven" e-skin is proposed, which realizes energy-storage and thermal-management multifunctions. Through the layer-by-layer assembly of MXene-carbon nanotube (CNT) composite with paper, lightweight and versatile e-skins based on supercapacitors and actuators are fabricated. Long CNTs wrap and entangle MXene nanosheets, enhancing their long-distance conductivity. Furthermore, the CNT network overcomes the structural collapse of MXene in sweat, improving the energy-storage performance of e-skin. The "sweat-driven" all-in-one supercapacitor with a trilayer structure is patternable, which absorbs sweat as electrolyte and harnesses the ions therein to store energy, exhibiting an areal capacitance of 282.3 mF cm-2 and a high power density (2117.8 µW cm-2). The "sweat-driven" actuator with a bilayer structure can be driven by moisture (bending curvature of 0.9 cm-1) and sweat for personal thermal management. Therefore, the paper serves as a separator, actuating layer, patternable layer, sweat extractor, and reservoir. The "sweat-driven" MXene-CNT composite provides a platform for versatile e-skins, which achieve the interaction with humans and offer insights into the development of multifunctional wearable electronics.

Fast access of the lattice thermal conductivity and phonon quasiparticle spectra of Mo2TiC2T2 (T = -O and -F) and Janus Mo2TiC2OF MXenes from machine learning potentials

The presence of strong anharmonic effects in surface functionalized MXenes greatly challenges the use of harmonic lattice dynamics calculations to predict their phonon spectra and lattice thermal conductivity at finite temperatures. Herein, we demonstrate the workflow for training and validating machine learning potentials in terms of moment tensor potential (MTP) for MXenes including Mo2TiC2, Mo2TiC2O2, Mo2TiC2F2 and Janus-Mo2TiC2OF monolayers. Then, the MTPs of MXenes are successfully combined with the harmonic lattice dynamics calculations to obtain the temperature renormalized phonon spectra, three-phonon scattering rates, phonon relaxation times and lattice thermal conductivity at finite temperatures. Furthermore, combining MTPs with classic molecular dynamics simulations at finite temperatures directly enables the calculation of phonon quasi-particle spectral energy density with a full inclusion of all anharmonic effects in MXenes. Our current results indicate that anharmonic effects are found to be relatively weak in Mo2TiC2 and Mo2TiC2O2 monolayers, whereas the phonon quasi-particle spectral energy densities largely resemble those of harmonic or renormalized lattice dynamics calculations. Significant broadening of spectral energy density at finite temperature is predicted for Mo2TiC2F2 and Janus-Mo2TiC2OF monolayers, implying strong anharmonic effects in those MXenes. Our work paves a new way for fast and reliable calculation of the phonon scattering process and lattice thermal conductivity of MXenes within MTPs trained from first-principles molecular dynamics simulations in the future.

V4C3 MXene: a Type-II Nodal Line Semimetal with Potential as High-Performing Anode Material for Mg-Ion Battery

We have used density functional theory simulations to explore the topological characteristics of a new MXene-like material, V4C3, and its oxide counterpart, assessing their potential as anode materials for Mg-ion batteries. Our research reveals that V4C3 monolayer is a topological type-II nodal line semimetal, protected by time reversal and spatial inversion symmetries. This type-II nodal line is marked by unique drumhead-like edge states that appear either inside or outside the loop circle, contingent upon the edge ending. Intriguingly, even with an increase in metallicity due to oxygen functionalization, the topological features of V4C3 remain intact. Consequently, the monolayer V4C3 has a topologically enhanced electrical conductivity that amplifies further upon oxygen functionalization. During the charging phase, a remarkable storage concentration led to a peak specific capacity of 894.73 mAh g-1 for V4C3, which only decreases to 789.33 mAh g-1 for V4C3O2. When compared to V2C, V4C3 displays a significantly lower specific capacity loss due to functionalization, demonstrating its superior electrochemical properties. Additionally, V4C3 and V4C3O2 exhibit moderate average open-circuit voltages (0.54 V for V4C3 and 0.58 V for V4C3O2) and energy barriers for intercalation migration (ranging between 0.29-0.63 eV), which are desirable for anode materials. Thus, our simulation results support V4C3 potential as an efficient anode material for Mg-ion batteries.

A Janus Textile with Tunable Heating Modes toward Precise Personal Thermal Management in Cold Conditions

Passive heating textiles (PHTs) have drawn increasing attention due to the advantages of energy-conservation heating. However, the heating capabilities of current PHTs are typically static and non-tunable, presenting poor adaptation to dynamic winter. Herein, a novel Janus textile with tunable heating modes is developed by constructing a customized structure with asymmetric optical properties. This Janus textile is created by coating one side of a cotton fabric with silver nanowires (AgNWs) and then applying transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXene) to the other side. The MXene side exhibits high solar absorptivity and low mid-infrared emissivity, while the AgNWs side has moderate solar absorptivity and mid-infrared emissivity. This structure ensures that the solar and radiative heating temperatures of the MXene side are 16 °C and 1.7 °C higher than those of the AgNWs side. This distinction allows for on-demand, accurate adjustments in solar and radiative heating capabilities by flipping the textile according to ambient temperature. Furthermore, this innovative design also features desired electric heating, thermal camouflage, self-cleaning and antibacterial properties, electromagnetic interference shielding, durability, and wearability. The Janus textile enables precise thermoregulation of the human body to adapt to variable cold weather, making it essential for optimal personal thermal management and climate change mitigation.

Construction of MXene/Bi2WO6 Schottky Junction for Highly Efficient Piezocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution and Unraveling Mechanism

For the first time, a series of MXene (Ti3C2Tx)/Bi2WO6 Schottky junction piezocatalysts were constructed, and the piezocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity was explored. Optimal Ti3C2Tx/Bi2WO6 exhibits the highest piezocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 764.4 μmol g-1 h-1, which is nearly 8 times higher than that of pure Ti3C2Tx and twice as high as that of Bi2WO6. This value also surpasses that of most recently reported typical piezocatalysts. Moreover, related experimental results and density functional theory calculations reveal that Ti3C2Tx/Bi2WO6 can provide unique channels for efficient electron transfer, enhance piezoelectric properties, optimize the adsorption Gibbs free energy of water, reduce activation energy for hydrogen atoms, endow robust separation capacity of charge carrier, and restrict the electron-hole recombination rate, thus significantly promoting the efficiency of hydrogen evolution reaction. Ultimately, we have unraveled an innovative piezocatalytic mechanism. This work broadens the scope of MXene materials in a sustainable energy piezocatalysis application.

Recent Advances in Nanomaterials for the Treatment of Acute Kidney Injury

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious clinical syndrome with high morbidity, elevated mortality, and poor prognosis, commonly considered a "sword of Damocles" for hospitalized patients, especially those in intensive care units. Oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis, caused by the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), play a key role in AKI progression. Hence, the investigation of effective and safe antioxidants and inflammatory regulators to scavenge overexpressed ROS and regulate excessive inflammation has become a promising therapeutic option. However, the unique physiological structure and complex pathological alterations in the kidneys render traditional therapies ineffective, impeding the residence and efficacy of most antioxidant and anti-inflammatory small molecule drugs within the renal milieu. Recently, nanotherapeutic interventions have emerged as a promising and prospective strategy for AKI, overcoming traditional treatment dilemmas through alterations in size, shape, charge, and surface modifications. This Review succinctly summarizes the latest advancements in nanotherapeutic approaches for AKI, encompassing nanozymes, ROS scavenger nanomaterials, MSC-EVs, and nanomaterials loaded with antioxidants and inflammatory regulator. Following this, strategies aimed at enhancing biocompatibility and kidney targeting are introduced. Furthermore, a brief discussion on the current challenges and future prospects in this research field is presented, providing a comprehensive overview of the evolving landscape of nanotherapeutic interventions for AKI.

Simultaneous antioxidant and neuroprotective effects of two-dimensional (2D) MXene-loaded isoquercetin for ischemic stroke treatment

Oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species drive ischemic stroke and its related complications. New antioxidant medications are therefore crucial for treating ischemic stroke. We developed Ti2C@BSA-ISO nanocomposites loaded with the hydrophobic drug isoquercetin (ISO) encapsulated in BSA on Ti2C nano-enzymes as a novel therapeutic nanomedicine for the treatment of ischemic stroke targeting reactive oxygen species (ROS). TEM visually proved the successful preparation of Ti2C@BSA-ISO, and the FTIR, XPS, zeta potential and DLS together demonstrated the acquisition of Ti2C@BSA-ISO. In addition, the enzyme-mimicking activity of Ti2C was evaluated and the antioxidant capacity of Ti2C@BSA-ISO was verified. Ti2C@BSA-ISO was able to reverse the decrease in cellular activity caused by ROS. Experiments in vivo showed that Ti2C@BSA-ISO could promote neuroprotection and scavenging of ROS in the hippocampal CA1 area and cerebral cortex of rats, thereby inhibiting cellular death and alleviating ischaemic stroke. Specifically, Ti2C@BSA-ISO alleviated ischemic stroke by inhibiting NLRP3/caspase-1/GSDMD pathway-mediated pyroptosis. Our study demonstrates the effectiveness of nanomedicines that can be directly used as drugs for the treatment of ischemic stroke in synergy with other drugs, which greatly expands the application of nanomaterials in the treatment of ischemic stroke.

Stacking engineering in layered homostructures: transitioning from 2D to 3D architectures

Artificial materials, characterized by their distinctive properties and customized functionalities, occupy a central role in a wide range of applications including electronics, spintronics, optoelectronics, catalysis, and energy storage. The emergence of atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials has driven the creation of artificial heterostructures, harnessing the potential of combining various 2D building blocks with complementary properties through the art of stacking engineering. The promising outcomes achieved for heterostructures have spurred an inquisitive exploration of homostructures, where identical 2D layers are precisely stacked. This perspective primarily focuses on the field of stacking engineering within layered homostructures, where precise control over translational or rotational degrees of freedom between vertically stacked planes or layers is paramount. In particular, we provide an overview of recent advancements in the stacking engineering applied to 2D homostructures. Additionally, we will shed light on research endeavors venturing into three-dimensional (3D) structures, which allow us to proactively address the limitations associated with artificial 2D homostructures. We anticipate that the breakthroughs in stacking engineering in 3D materials will provide valuable insights into the mechanisms governing stacking effects. Such advancements have the potential to unlock the full capability of artificial layered homostructures, propelling the future development of materials, physics, and device applications.

Designing State-of-the-Art Gas Sensors: From Fundamentals to Applications

Gas sensors are crucial in environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and medical diagnostics. Due to the rising demand for precise and reliable gas detection, there is a rising demand for cutting-edge gas sensors that possess exceptional sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. Due to their tunable electrical properties, high-density surface-active sites, and significant surface-to-volume ratio, nanomaterials have been extensively investigated in this regard. The traditional gas sensors utilize homogeneous material for sensing where the adsorbed surface oxygen species play a vital role in their sensing activity. However, their performance for selective gas sensing is still unsatisfactory because the employed high temperature leads to the poor stability. The heterostructures nanomaterials can easily tune sensing performance and their different energy band structures, work functions, charge carrier concentration and polarity, and interfacial band alignments can be precisely designed for high-performance selective gas sensing at low temperature. In this review article, we discuss in detail the fundamentals of semiconductor gas sensing along with their mechanisms. Further, we highlight the existed challenges in semiconductor gas sensing. In addition, we review the recent advancements in semiconductor gas sensor design for applications from different perspective. Finally, the conclusion and future perspectives for improvement of the gas sensing performance are discussed.

Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and MXene reinforced multifunctional conductive hydrogels for multimodal sensors and flexible supercapacitors

With the growing demand for eco-friendly materials in wearable smart electronic devices, renewable, biocompatible, and low-cost hydrogels based on natural polymers have attracted much attention. Cellulose, as one of the renewable and degradable natural polymers, shows great potential in wearable smart electronic devices. Multifunctional conductive cellulose-based hydrogels are designed for flexible electronic devices by adding sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and MXene into polyacrylic acid networks. The multifunctional hydrogels possess excellent mechanical property (stress: 310 kPa; strain: 1127 %), toughness (206.67 KJ m-3), conductivity (1.09 ± 0.12 S m-1) and adhesion (82.19 ± 3.65 kPa). The multifunctional conductive hydrogels serve as strain sensors (Gauge Factor (GF) = 5.79, 0-700 % strain; GF = 14.0, 700-900 % strain; GF = 40.36, 900-1000 % strain; response time: 300 ms; recovery time: 200 ms) and temperature sensors (Temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) = 2.5755 °C-1 at 35 °C- 60 °C). The sensor detects human activities with clear and steady signals. A distributed array of flexible sensors is created to measure the magnitude and distribution of pressure and a hydrogel-based flexible touch keyboard is also fabricated to recognize writing trajectories, pressures and speeds. Furthermore, a flexible hydrogel-based supercapacitor powers the LED and exhibits good cyclic stability over 15,000 charge-discharge cycles.

MXene-Based Elastomer Mimetic Stretchable Sensors: Design, Properties, and Applications

Flexible sensors based on MXene-polymer composites are highly prospective for next-generation wearable electronics used in human-machine interfaces. One of the motivating factors behind the progress of flexible sensors is the steady arrival of new conductive materials. MXenes, a new family of 2D nanomaterials, have been drawing attention since the last decade due to their high electronic conductivity, processability, mechanical robustness and chemical tunability. In this review, we encompass the fabrication of MXene-based polymeric nanocomposites, their structure-property relationship, and applications in the flexible sensor domain. Moreover, our discussion is not only limited to sensor design, their mechanism, and various modes of sensing platform, but also their future perspective and market throughout the world. With our article, we intend to fortify the bond between flexible matrices and MXenes thus promoting the swift advancement of flexible MXene-sensors for wearable technologies.

Recent advances in two-dimensional polymers: synthesis, assembly and energy-related applications

Two-dimensional polymers (2DPs) are a class of 2D crystalline polymer materials with definite structures, which have outstanding physical-chemical and electronic properties. They cleverly link organic building units through strong covalent bonds and can construct functional 2DPs through reasonable design and selection of different monomer units to meet various application requirements. As promising energy materials, 2DPs have developed rapidly in recent years. This review first introduces the basic overview of 2DPs, such as their historical development, inherent 2D characteristics and diversified topological advantages, followed by the summary of the typical 2DP synthesis methods recently (including "top-down" and "bottom-up" methods). The latest research progress in assembly and processing of 2DPs and the energy-related applications in energy storage and conversion are also discussed. Finally, we summarize and prospect the current research status, existing challenges, and future research directions of 2DPs.

Recent advancement and key opportunities of MXenes for electrocatalysis

MXenes are promising materials for electrocatalysis due to their excellent metallic conductivity, hydrophilicity, high specific surface area, and excellent electrochemical properties. Herein, we summarize the recent advancement of MXene-based materials for electrocatalysis and highlight their key challenges and opportunities. In particular, this review emphasizes on the major design principles of MXene-based electrocatalysts, including (1) coupling MXene with active materials or heteroatomic doping to create highly active synergistic catalyst sites; (2) construction of 3D MXene structure or introducing interlayer spacers to increase active areas and form fast mass-charge transfer channel; and (3) protecting edge of MXene or in situ transforming the surface of MXene to stable active substance that inhibits the oxidation of MXene and then enhances the stability. Consequently, MXene-based materials exhibit outstanding performance for a variety of electrocatalytic reactions. Finally, the key challenges and promising prospects of the practical applications of MXene-based electrocatalysts are briefly proposed.

Constructed MXene matrix composites as sensing material and applications thereof: A review

Most studies on MXene matrix composites for sensor development have primarily focused on synthesis and application. Nevertheless, there is currently a lack of research on how the introduction of different materials affects the sensing properties of these composites. The rapid development of MXene has raised intriguing questions about improving sensor performance by combining MXene with other materials such as polymers, metals and inorganic non-metals. This review will concentrate on the construction of MXene-based composites and explore ways to enhance their sensor applications. Specifically, this review describes why the introduction of materials to the system brings the advantage of low concentration and high sensitivity assays, as well as the MXene-based frameworks that have been recently investigated. Lastly, in order to capture the current trend of MXene-based composites in sensor applications and identify promising research directions, this review will critically evaluate the potential applications of newly developed MXene systems.
