A High Nucleus Cu-Incorporated Giant Phosphotungstate with Photocatalytic Oxidation C-H of Toluene

Exploring a novel photocatalyst for catalytic oxidation of toluene is a sustainable strategy for energy conversion in times of an energy crisis. However, designing an effective photocatalyst for the conversion of toluene remains challenging. Herein, a novel organic monophosphonate-modified high nucleus Cu-incorporated polyoxotungstate, K8H33[{Cu0.5(H2O)4}{Cu2(O3PCH2COO)(1,4,9-α-P2W15O56)}]4·Cl·60H2O (1), has been intentionally synthesized by a self-assembly process utilizing conventional aqueous method. It reveals that 1 contains a polyanion of [{Cu0.5(H2O)}4{Cu2(O3PCH2COO)(1,4,9-α-P2W15O56)}]440- composed of four Dawson-type {1,4,9-α-P2W15} subunits, forming an oval-shaped structure and further connecting into a three-dimensional (3D) framework by lateral {Cu(H2O)4}2+. Interestingly, the trivacant {1,4,9-α-P2W15} subunits were observed in the organophosphonate acid-functionalized polyoxometalates for the first time. Notably, 1 exhibits a wonderful performance in catalytic oxidation of the recalcitrant C(sp3)-H bond of toluene to benzoic acid with a conversion as high as 97% under visible light utilizing O2 as an oxidant.

Multi-Electron Visible Light Photoaccumulation on a Dipyridylamine Copper(II)-Polyoxometalate Conjugate Applied to Photocatalytic Generation of CF3 Radicals

This article describes the synthesis and characterization of an organic-inorganic hybrid polyoxometalate functionalized by a short link with a tripodal N-based ligand and its copper complex. Upon visible light irradiation, the latter is able to store up to three reducing equivalents. The locus of the reduction is discussed based on physicochemical measurements and DFT calculations. In the presence of Togni's reagent, this complex allows for the photocatalytic generation of CF₃ radicals, opening the road to valuable synthetic applications.

Supramolecular assemblies of organo-functionalised hybrid polyoxometalates: from functional building blocks to hierarchical nanomaterials

This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the supramolecular organisation and hierarchical self-assembly of organo-functionalised hybrid polyoxometalates (hereafter referred to as hybrid POMs), and their emerging role as multi-functional building blocks in the construction of new nanomaterials. Polyoxometalates have long been studied as a fascinating outgrowth of traditional metal-oxide chemistry, where the unusual position they occupy between individual metal oxoanions and solid-state bulk oxides imbues them with a range of attractive properties (e.g. solubility, high structural modularity and tuneable properties/reactivity). Specifically, the capacity for POMs to be covalently coupled to an effectively limitless range of organic moieties has opened exciting new avenues in their rational design, while the combination of distinct organic and inorganic components facilitates the formation of complex molecular architectures and the emergence of new, unique functionalities. Here, we present a detailed discussion of the design opportunities afforded by hybrid POMs, where fine control over their size, topology and their covalent and non-covalent interactions with a range of other species and/or substrates makes them ideal building blocks in the assembly of a broad range of supramolecular hybrid nanomaterials. We review both direct self-assembly approaches (encompassing both solution and solid-state approaches) and the non-covalent interactions of hybrid POMs with a range of suitable substrates (including cavitands, carbon nanotubes and biological systems), while giving key consideration to the underlying driving forces in each case. Ultimately, this review aims to demonstrate the enormous potential that the rational assembly of hybrid POM clusters shows for the development of next-generation nanomaterials with applications in areas as diverse as catalysis, energy-storage and molecular biology, while providing our perspective on where the next major developments in the field may emerge.

Development of sterically hindered siloxide-functionalized polyoxotungstates for the complexation of 5d-metals

In this study, we extend the family of organosilyl-functionalized trivacant Keggin polyoxotungstates, [PW₉O₃₄(RSiOH)₃]^3- (R = ⁿPr, ⁱPr, ^tBu), through the introduction of bulky aryl and aliphatic silanol substituents, namely phenyl, cyclohexyl and biphenyl. This work was performed in order to study the impact of these large functional groups on the accessibility of the well-defined tridentate coordination site. Coordination of hafnium to these type II hybrid polyoxotungstates was conducted in order to study the ability of the bulkier ligand pockets to support larger cations in comparison to those previously reported (e.g. Ti⁴⁺, V³⁺, V⁵⁺, Ge⁴⁺). Increased steric hindrance around the coordination site from the biphenyl groups resulted in much longer reaction times for the complexation reaction compared to the other functional groups used, but the impact of our design toward stabilizing reactive species proved limited, as all complexes easily undergo hydrolysis of the Hf-O^tBu bond in the presence of water. Electrochemical investigations of the ligands and hafnium complexes reveal that the redox events centered on the polyoxotungstate core can be tuned by varying the substituents on the silyl fragment, and exhibit a cathodic shift after coordination of the redox inactive tetravalent cation.

{P2V3W15}-Polyoxometalates Functionalized with Phthalocyaninato Y and Yb Moieties

A tris(alkoxo)pyridine-augmented Wells-Dawson polyoxometalate (nBu₄N)₆[WD-Py] (WD = P₂V₃W₁₅O₅₉(OCH₂)₃C, Py = C₅H₄N) was functionalized with phthalocyaninato metal moieties (MPc where M = Y or Yb and Pc = C₃₂H₁₆N₈) to afford (nBu₄N)₄[HWD-Py(MPc)] compounds. High-resolution mass spectrometry was used to detect and identify the hybrid assembly. The magnetism studies reveal substantial differences between M = Yb (monomeric, single-ion paramagnetism) and M = Y (containing dimers, radical character). The results of electronic paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and magnetochemical calculations indicate the presence of intramolecular charge transfer from the MPc moiety to the polyoxometalate and of intermolecular charge transfer from the MPc moiety of one molecule to the polyoxometalate unit of another molecule. These compounds with identified V^IV ions represent unique examples of transition-metal/lanthanide complex-POM hybrid compounds with nonphotoinduced charge transfer between electron donor and acceptor centers.

A phosphonate–lanthanoid polyoxometalate coordination polymer: {Ce2P2W16O60L2}n zipper chains

Polyoxometalates with separate lacuna sites

Bi-functionalizion of Wells-Dawson-type polyoxotungstates with exo-coordinated rare earth metal ions (M = DyIII, YIII) and phenylphosphonate induces the formation of a separate second lacunary site in the pre-functionalized [α2-P2W17O61(PhPO)2]6- precursor. The resulting [{(H2O)xM2(α2,α2'-P2W16O60)(PhPO)2}2]8- dimer clusters are stable in solution, exhibit interesting electrochemical behavior, and, for the DyIII derivative, single ion-magnet characteristics.

Post-functionalization through covalent modification of organic counter ions: a stepwise and controlled approach for novel hybrid polyoxometalate materials

Post-functionalization of Class I type polyoxometalate-organic hybrids through covalent modification of the organic counter ions in a step-wise and controlled manner is reported for the first time. The properties of the post-functionalized hybrids have been studied and compared with those of their parent hybrids revealing marked differences in properties.

Selenotungstates incorporating organophosphonate ligands and metal ions: synthesis, characterization, magnetism and catalytic efficiency in the Knoevenagel condensation reaction

Three new sandwich-type selenotungstate anion structures and Co1 show superior catalytic performance in the Knoevenagel condensation of benzaldehyde and ethyl cyanoacetate under mild conditions.

Hybrid polyoxometalates as post-functionalization platforms: from fundamentals to emerging applications

Polyoxometalates (POMs) represent an important group of metal-oxo nanoclusters, typically comprised of early transition metals in high oxidation states (mainly V, Mo and W). Many plenary POMs exhibit good pH, solvent, thermal and redox stability, which makes them attractive components for the design of covalently integrated hybrid organic-inorganic molecules, herein referred to as hybrid-POMs. Until now, thousands of organic hybrid-POMs have been reported; however, only a small fraction can be further functionalized using other organic molecules or metal cations. This emerging class of 'post-functionalizable' hybrid-POMs constitute a valuable modular platform that permits coupling of POM properties with different organic and metal cation functionalities, thereby expanding the key physicochemical properties that are relevant for application in (photo)catalysis, bioinorganic chemistry and materials science. The post-functionalizable hybrid-POM platforms offer an opportunity to covalently link multi-electron redox responsive POM cores with virtually any (bio)organic molecule or metal cation, generating a wide range of materials with tailored properties. Over the past few years, these materials have been showcased in the preparation of framework materials, functional surfaces, surfactants, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts and light harvesting materials, among others. This review article provides an overview on the state of the art in POM post-functionalization and highlights the key design and structural features that permit the discovery of new hybrid-POM platforms. In doing so, we aim to make the subject more comprehensible, both for chemists and for scientists with different materials science backgrounds interested in the applications of hybrid (POM) materials. The review article goes beyond the realms of polyoxometalate chemistry and encompasses emerging research domains such as reticular materials, surfactants, surface functionalization, light harvesting materials, non-linear optics, charge storing materials, and homogeneous acid-base catalysis among others.
