Pseudotetrahedral cobalt(ii) complexes with PNP-ligands showing uniaxial magnetic anisotropy

Magnetic anisotropy and slow relaxation of magnetisation in double salts containing four- and six-coordinate cobalt(II) complex ions

Four novel Co(II) coordination compounds 1-4 of the general formula [Co(Ln)2][Co(NCY)4]·mCH3CN (where Ln are tridentate ligands L1 = 2,6-bis(1-hexyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine for 1 and 2; L2 = 2,6-bis(1-octyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine for 3; L3 = 2,6-bis(1-dodecyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine for 4, Y = O for 1, 3, and 4 and Y = S for 2; m = 0 for 1 and 3, m = 0.5 for 2 and m = 2 for 4) were prepared and characterised. The molecular structures of all four compounds consist of the hexacoordinate complex cation [Co(Ln)2]2+ and tetracoordinate complex anion [Co(NCY)4]2-, with distorted octahedral and tetrahedral symmetry of coordination polyhedra, respectively. The electronic structures of all compounds feature an orbitally non-degenerate ground state well-separated from the lowest excited state, which allows the analysis of the magnetic anisotropy by the spin Hamiltonian model. ZFS parameters, derived from both CASSCF-NEVPT2 calculations and magnetic data analysis, indicate that tetrahedral anions [Co(NCY)4]2- exhibit small axial parameters |D| spanning the range of 2.2 to 7.7 cm-1, while octahedral cations [Co(Ln)2]2+ display significantly larger |D| parameters in the range of 37 to 95 cm-1. For 1-3, the Fourier-transform infrared magnetic spectroscopy (FIRMS) revealed a reasonable transmission with a magnetic absorption around the expected value for the ZFS accompanied by features allowing to identify phonon frequencies and simulate spin-phonon couplings. Dynamic magnetic investigations unveiled the field-induced slow relaxation of magnetisation, with maximal relaxation times (τ) of 92(2) μs for 2 at 2 K and BDC = 0.3 T. The temperature evolution of τ was analysed using a combination of Orbach, direct and Raman relaxations (Ueff = 8(1) K (5.6 cm-1)) or Orbach, direct and spin-phonon induced relaxations (Ueff = 10.3(9) K (7.2 cm-1)). The rest of the complexes, namely 1, 3, and 4 show field-induced slow relaxation of magnetisation with τ smaller than 16 μs.

Tetracoordinate Co(II) complexes with semi-coordination as stable single-ion magnets for deposition on graphene

We present a theoretical and experimental study of two tetracoordinate Co(II)-based complexes with semi-coordination interactions, i.e., non-covalent interactions involving the central atom. We argue that such interactions enhance the thermal and structural stability of the compounds, making them appropriate for deposition on substrates, as demonstrated by their successful deposition on graphene. DC magnetometry and high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) experiments revealed an axial magnetic anisotropy and weak intermolecular antiferromagnetic coupling in both compounds, supported by theoretical predictions from complete active space self-consistent field calculations complemented by N-electron valence state second-order perturbation theory (CASSCF-NEVPT2), and broken-symmetry density functional theory (BS-DFT). AC magnetometry demonstrated that the compounds are field-induced single-ion magnets (SIMs) at applied static magnetic fields, with slow relaxation of magnetization governed by a combination of quantum tunneling, Orbach, and direct relaxation mechanisms. The structural stability under ambient conditions and after deposition was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. Theoretical modeling by DFT of different configurations of these systems on graphene revealed n-type doping of graphene originating from electron transfer from the deposited molecules, confirmed by electrical transport measurements and Raman spectroscopy.

A porous cobalt(II)-organic framework exhibiting high room temperature proton conductivity and field-induced slow magnetic relaxation

A two-dimensional (2D) cobalt(II) metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed by a ditopic organic ligand, formulated as {[Co(Hbic)(H₂O)]·4H₂O}_n (1) (H₂bic = 1H-benzimidazole-5-carboxylic acid), was hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the distorted octahedral Co²⁺ ions, as coordination nodes, are bridged to form 2D honeycomb networks, which are further organized into a 3D supramolecular porous framework through multiple hydrogen bonds and interlayer π-π interactions. Dynamic crystallography experiments reveal the anisotropic thermal expansion behavior of the lattice, suggesting a flexible hydrogen-bonded 3D framework. Interestingly, hydrogen-bonded (H₂O)₄ tetramers were found to be located in porous channels, yielding 1D proton transport pathways. As a result, the compound exhibited a high room-temperature proton conductivity of 1.6 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 under a relative humidity of 95% through a Grotthuss mechanism. Magnetic investigations combined with theoretical calculations reveal giant easy-plane magnetic anisotropy of the distorted octahedral Co²⁺ ions with the experimental and computed D values being 87.1 and 109.3 cm^-1, respectively. In addition, the compound exhibits field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behavior at low temperatures with an effective energy barrier of U_eff = 45.2 cm^-1. Thus, the observed electrical and magnetic properties indicate a rare proton conducting SIM-MOF. The foregoing results provide a unique bifunctional cobalt(II) framework material and suggest a promising way to achieve magnetic and electrical properties using a supramolecular framework platform.

Change in the Electronic Structure of the Cobalt(II) Ion in a One-Dimensional Polymer with Flexible Linkers Induced by a Structural Phase Transition

A new 1D-coordination polymer [Co(Piv)₂(NH₂(CH₂)₆NH₂)]_n (1, Piv is Me₃CCO₂^- anion) was obtained, the mononuclear fragments {Co(O₂CR)₂} within which are linked by μ-bridged molecules of hexamethylenediamine (NH₂(CH₂)₆NH₂). For this compound, two different monoclinic C2/c (α-1) and P2/n (β-1) phases were found at room temperature by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, with a similar structure of chains and their packages in unit cells. The low-temperature phase (γ-1) of crystal 1 at 150 K corresponds to the triclinic space group P-1. As the temperature decreases, the structural phase transition (SPT) in the α-1 and β-1 crystals is accompanied by an increase in the crystal packing density caused by the rearrangements of both H-bonds and the nearest ligand environment of the cobalt atom ("octahedral CoN₂O₄ around the metal center at room temperature" → "pseudo-tetrahedral CoN₂O₂ at 150 K"). The SPT was confirmed by DSC in the temperature range 210-150 K; when heated above 220 K, anomalies in the behavior of the heat flow are observed, which may be associated with the reversibility of SPT; endo effects are observed up to 300 K. The SPT starts below 200 K. At 100 K, a mixture of phases was found in sample 1: 27% α-1 phase, 61% γ-1 phase. In addition, at 100 K, 12% of the new δ-1 phase was detected, which was identified from the diffraction pattern at 260 K upon subsequent heating: the a,b,c-parameters and unit cell volume are close to the structure parameters of γ-1, and the values of the α,β,γ-angles are significantly different. Further heating leads to a phase transition from δ-1 to α-1, which both coexist at room temperature. According to the DC magnetometry data, during cooling and heating, the χ_MT(T) curves for 1 form a hysteresis loop with ~110 K, in which the difference in the χ_MT values reaches 9%. Ab initio calculations of the electronic structure of cobalt(II) in α-1 and γ-1 have been performed. Based on the EPR data at 10 K and the ab initio calculations, the behavior of the χ_MT(T) curve for 1 was simulated in the temperature range of 2-150 K. It was found that 1 exhibits slow magnetic relaxation in a field of 1000 Oe.

Magnetic anisotropy of two tetrahedral Co(II)-halide complexes with triphenylphosphine ligands

Recently, the choice of ligand and geometric control of mononuclear complexes, which can affect the relaxation pathways and blocking temperature, have received wide attention in the field of single-ion magnets (SIMs). To find out the influence of the coordination environment on SIMs, two four-coordinate mononuclear Co(II) complexes [NEt₄][Co(PPh₃)X₃] (X = Cl^-, 1; Br^-, 2) have been synthesized and studied by X-ray single crystallography, magnetic measurements, high-frequency and -field EPR (HF-EPR) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Both complexes are in a cubic space group Pa3̄ (No. 205), containing a slightly distorted tetrahedral moiety with crystallographically imposed C_3v symmetry through the [Co(PPh₃)X₃]^- anion. The direct-current (dc) magnetic data and HF-EPR spectroscopy indicated the anisotropic S = 3/2 spin ground states of the Co(II) ions with the easy-plane anisotropy for 1 and 2. Ab initio calculations were performed to confirm the positive magnetic anisotropies of 1 and 2. Frequency- and temperature-dependent alternating-current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed slow magnetic relaxation for 1 and 2 at an applied dc field. Finally, the magnetic properties of 1 and 2 were compared to those of other Co(II) complexes with a [CoAB₃] moiety.

Single-ion magnet behaviour in homoleptic Co(ii) complexes bearing 2-iminopyrrolyl ligands

Four-coordinate distorted tetrahedral bis(2-iminopyrrolyl)cobalt(ii) complexes behave as Single-Ion Magnets (SIMs) in the absence of an external magnetic field.

Co(II)-Based single-ion magnets with 1,1'-ferrocenediyl-bis(diphenylphosphine) metalloligands

Herein, we report on investigations of magnetic and spectroscopic properties of three heterobimetallic Fe(ii)-Co(ii) coordination compounds based on the tetracoordinate {CoP2X2} core encapsulated by dppf metalloligand, where X = Cl (1), Br (2), I (3), dppf = 1,1'-ferrocenediyl -bis(diphenylphosphine). The analysis of static magnetic data has revealed the presence of axial magnetic anisotropy in compounds (1) and (2) and this was further confirmed by high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) spectroscopy. Dynamic magnetic data confirmed that (1) and (2) behave as field-induced Single-Ion Magnets (SIMs). Together with bulk studies, we have also tested the possibility of depositing (2) as thick films on Au(111), glass, and polymeric acetate by drop-casting as well as thermal sublimation, a key aspect for the development of future devices embedding these magnetic objects.

Tuning Magnetic Anisotropy in a Class of Co(II) Bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonate) Complexes

Tuning the magnetic anisotropy of metal ions remains highly interesting in the design of improved single-molecule magnets (SMMs). We herein report synthetic, structural, magnetic, and computational studies of four mononuclear Co^II complexes, namely [Co(hfac)₂ (MeCN)₂ ] (1), [Co(hfac)₂ (Spy)₂ ] (2), [Co(hfac)₂ (MBIm)₂ ] (3), and [Co(hfac)₂ (DMF)₂ ] (4) (MeCN=acetonitrile, hfac=hexafluoroacetylacetone, Spy=4-styrylpyridine, MbIm=5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole, DMF=N,N-dimethylformamide), with distorted octahedral geometry constructed from hexafluoroacetylacetone (hfac) and various axial ligands. By a building block approach, complexes 2-4 were synthesized by recrystallization of the starting material of 1 from various ligands containing solution. Magnetic and theoretical studies reveal that 1-4 possess large positive D values and relative small E parameters, indicating easy-plane magnetic anisotropy with significant rhombic anisotropy in 1-4. Dynamic alternative current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that these complexes exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under external fields, suggesting field-induced single-ion magnets (SIMs) of 1-4. These results provide a promising platform to achieve fine tuning of magnetic anisotropy through varying the axial ligands based on Co(II) bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonate) complexes.

Luminescent Ir(iii)–Ln(iii) coordination polymers showing slow magnetization relaxation

Two structural types of iridium(iii)–lanthanide(iii) coordination polymers, single-chain Ir2Ln and double-chain Ir4Ln2 (Ln = Gd, Dy, Er, and Yb), have been prepared. SMM behaviour and NIR luminescence were observed for the Ir–Er and Ir–Yb systems.

Breaking the axiality of pentagonal–bipyramidal dysprosium(iii) single-molecule magnets with pyrazolate ligands

Ten air-stable dysprosium(iii) SMMs with destroyed pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry imposed by axial bidentate-chelating pyrazolate ligands are studied, showing substitutional effect on axial ligands and no effect on equatorial ligands.

Correlating magnetic anisotropy with the subtle coordination geometry variation of a series of cobalt(ii)-sulfonamide complexes

Systematic substitution on the N-(pyridine-2-ylmethyl)-sulfonamide ligand leads to the subtle variation of the CoN4 coordination geometry in a series of cobalt(ii) complexes sharing the common formula of Co[R1(C6N2H5)R2]2, where R1 = H, R2 = 4-tert-butylphenylsulfonyl (tBuphs) 1, R2 = 5-(dimethylamino)naphthalen-1-ylsulfonyl (DNps) 2, R2 = mesitylsulfonyl (Ms) 3, R2 = tosyl (Tos) 4, and R2 = naphthalen-1-ylsulfonyl (Nps) 5; R1 = Me, R2 = tBuphs 6. Magnetic studies show that the axial zero-field splitting parameter (D) is subtlely correlated with the coordination geometric variation subjected to the peripheral substituted groups. Specifically, the distortion from the ideal tetrahedral geometry (Td symmetry) to the seesaw geometry (D2d symmetry) increases uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. The degree of distortion measured by the continuous symmetry measure (CSM) shows that a narrow interval of CSM (6-7), which corresponds to 14-15 degree deviation from the standard tetrahedron, is ideal for maximising the D value in this coordination geometry, while the direction of the D tensor is less sensitive to such a structural variation.
