Abstract
Four mononuclear 9-coordinate Dy-based complexes, [Dy(HL1)2(NO3)3(CH3OH)] (1Dy), [Dy(HL2)2(NO3)3(H2O)] (2Dy), [Dy(HL3)3(NO3)3]·CH3CN (3Dy), and [Dy(HL4)3(NO3)3] (4Dy), have been constructed by neutral Schiff-base ligands (1-[N-(4-R)aminomethylidene-2(1H)-naphthalenone, R = -Cl (HL1), -NO2 (HL2), -OCH3 (HL3), -I (HL4)). By tuning the terminal substituent group of HL ligands, the number of HL ligands coordinated to the central Dy3+ ion unexpectedly varies from 2 to 3, and the local symmetry around the Dy3+ ion reduces from D3h to Cs. Magnetic measurements reveal that 2Dy can display single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior in zero dc field, while 1Dy, 3Dy and 4Dy show field-induced slow magnetic relaxation. Ab initio calculations were employed to elucidate magnetic anisotropy in the complexes, including g-tensors, averaged transition magnetic moments and magnetic easy axes. The difference in magnetic behaviors of the four complexes can be ascribed to the terminal substituent effect of neutral Schiff-base ligands.

Abstract
Solvent responsive magnets comprise a class of molecule-based materials where lattice solvent driven structural transformation leads to the switching of magnetic properties. Herein, we present a special type of magnet where single-crystal to single-crystal (SCSC) transformations within mononuclear DyIII compounds result in the switching of DyIII single-molecule magnets (SMMs). This structural transformation involves lattice solvents which leads to significant changes in the color and magnetic properties. Additionally, the relaxation dynamics of mononuclear DyIII compounds are perceptibly fine-tuned by the modification of β-diketonate ligands. The uniaxial magnetic anisotropies, magneto-structural correlations and the relaxation mechanism were investigated by magnetic studies and ab initio calculations. These experimental and theoretical studies indicate that compound 2 exhibits the best magnetic properties in compounds 1-4. The experimental observation is supported by the theoretical prediction of QTM time (τZeeQTM) as theτZeeQTM of 2 is remarkably longer than those of the other three compounds by an order of magnitude. This means that, compared with 1, 3, and 4, the magnetic relaxation of 2 is significantly slower. Meanwhile, 2 has the largest value of axial ESP (the axial electrostatic potential), which supports the smallest gXY value in these compounds, resulting in better SMM properties. The present results offer a systematic synthesis regulation to change the magnetization dynamics and further understand magneto-structural correlations for DyIII SMMs.

Abstract
Guided by the self-assembled process and mechanism, the strategy of in situ Schiff base reaction would be capable of bringing a feasible method to construct and synthesize lanthanide compounds with distinct structures and magnetic properties. A mononuclear Dy(III) compound was synthesized through a multidentate Schiff base ligand and a chelating β-diketonate ligand, which was named as [Dy(L)(bppd)]·CH3OH [1; H2L = N,N'-bis(2-hydroxy-5-methyl-3-formylbenzyl)-N,N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethylenediamine and bppd = 3-bis(pyridin-2-yl)propane-1,3-dione]. Furthermore, a new binuclear Dy(III) compound, [Dy2(H2Lox)(bppd)3]·8CH3OH [2; H4Lox = N,N'-bis[2-hydroxy-5-methyl-3-(hydroxyiminomethyl)benzyl]-N,N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethylenediamine], was obtained via an in situ synthetic process. Under similar synthetic conditions, [Dy(L)(ctbd)] [3; ctbd = 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3-butanedione] and [Dy2(H2Lox)(ctbd)3]·CH3OH·C4H10O (4) were synthesized by modifying the β-diketonate ligand and in situ Schiff base reaction. Compound 3 is a mononuclear configuration, while compound 4 exhibits a binuclear Dy(III) unit. Therein, formylbenzyl groups of H2L in 1 and 3 were changed to (hydroxyiminomethyl)benzyl groups in 2 and 4, respectively. In isomorphous 2 and 4, two Dy(III) centers are connected through two phenol O- atoms of the H2Lox2- ligand to form a binuclear structure. Eight-coordinated Dy(III) ions with different distortions can be observed in 1-4. The crystals of 1 and 3 suffered dissolution/precipitation to obtain 2 and 4, respectively. The relationship between the structure and magnetism in compounds 1-4 was discussed through the combination of structural, experimental, and theoretical investigations. Especially, the rates of quantum tunneling of magnetization of 1-4 were theoretically predicted and are consistent with the experimental results. For 2 and 4, the theoretically calculated dipolar parameters Jdip are consistent with the experimental observation of weak ferromagnetic coupling.

Seven-coordinate Ln III complexes assembled from a bulky MesacacH ligand: their synthesis, structure, photoluminescence and SMM behaviour. Dalton Trans 2020; 49:15404-15416. Abstract
The reaction of a bulky acetyl acetone ligand 1,3-dimesitylpropane-1,3-dione (MesacacH) with hydrated lanthanide chlorides in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide afforded a new family of neutral mononuclear LnIII complexes [Ln(Mesacac)3(DMF)] (Ln = Dy (1); Tb (2); Y0.91Dy0.09 (3); and Er (4)). The molecular structures of these complexes were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The coordination geometries of the LnIII centre were analysed by SHAPE analysis which revealed a capped octahedral geometry in 1-4. Photoluminescence studies showed ligand-sensitized green emissions for 2 with an appreciable quantum yield of 0.83%. Static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic studies of complexes 1 and 3 were performed. The dynamic magnetic study revealed that complex 1 exhibits zero-field slow relaxation of the magnetization without showing a clear maximum in the out-of-phase ac susceptibility plots. However, magnetic dilution of 1 with the YIII metal ion (complex 3) and/or the application of a dc magnetic field induces a strong frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility signals with χ''M peaks in the 3-10 K temperature range, thus supporting field-induced SMM behaviour of 1. The relaxation process takes place through a combination of the Orbach and Raman mechanisms. The fitting of the temperature dependence of the relaxation time to the equation τ-1 = τ0-1 exp(-Ueff/kBT) + BTn, allows the extraction of the effective energy barrier Ueff/kB = 70 K (48.7 cm-1) and pre-exponential parameter of τ0 = 2.7 × 10-7 s for the Orbach mechanism (first term) and the parameters B = 0.04 s-1 K-n and n = 6.11, for the Raman mechanism (second term).

To develop new lanthanide single-molecule magnets (SMMs), two new complexes of [Dy2(MeOH)2(HL1)2(NO3)2]·2MeOH (1) and [Dy6(μ3-OH)2(L2)2(HL2)2(H2L2)2Cl2(EtOH)2]Cl2·3EtOH·CH3CN (2) were obtained by reacting Dy(NO)3·6H2O with 3-amino-1,2-propanediol in the presence of 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde for 1 and by reacting DyCl3·6H2O with 1,1-di(hydroxymethyl)ethylamine in the presence of 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde for 2, respectively, in which the Schiff base ligands of 3-(((2-hydroxynaphthaen-1-yl)methylene)amino)-propane-1,2-diol (H3L1) and 2-(β-naphthalideneamino)-2-(hydroxylmethyl)-1-propanol (H3L2) were in situ formed. The two Dy(III) ions in 1 are linked by two Oalkoxy atoms of two (HL1)2- ligands to build a dinuclear skeleton. Complex 2 presents a nearly planar hexanuclear skeleton constructed from four edge-shared triangular Dy3 units with the two peripheral Dy3 units consolidated by two μ3-O bridges and the two central Dy3 units consolidated by one μ3-O bridge. Obviously, they exhibit a different topological arrangement resulting from the linkage of the Schiff base ligands. Both of them are typical SMMs under zero dc fields, with a Ueff/ kB value of 34 K for 1 and 40 K for 2, respectively. Multiple processes are involved in the relaxation processes of 1 and 2. The different SMM performances of the two titled complexes reveal a tuning effect of Schiff base ligands through tuning the coordination environments and topological arrangements of dysprosium(III) ions, which is supported by the theoretical calculations.
