Ionic Liquid as a N,O-Donor Ligand-Based Extraction System Modifier: Establishing the Mechanism of Am(III)-Selectivity Increasing

In this work, we studied the extraction systems for the separation f-elements based on the tetradentate N,O-donor ligand di(N-ethyl-4-ethylanilide) 2,2'-dipyridyl-6,6'-dicarboxylic acid (L). The organic phase of these systems was perspective fluorine-containing organic solvents-metanitrobenzotrifluoride (F-3), ionic liquid C4mimNTf2 (IL), and their mixture. The increase of Am(III) selectivity in the presence of Ln(III) in cases of the diluent mixture was shown. The mechanism of the f-element complexation leading to the improved properties of the extraction systems was studied by UV-visible, Raman-spectroscopy, XRD-study, and density functional theory calculations.

Turn-off luminescence sensing, white light emission and magnetic studies of two-dimensional lanthanide MOFs

The lanthanide metal organic framework compounds [Ln(BPTA)1.5(Bpy)]·0.5DMF (Ln = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy; 1a-5a) and [Ln(BPTA)1.5(Phen)]·0.5DMF (Ln = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy; 1b-5b) were prepared by employing 2,5-bis(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)terephthalic acid (2,5-BPTA) as the primary ligand and 2,2'-bipyridine (1a-5a) and 1,10-phenanthroline (1b-5b) as the secondary ligands. Single-crystal structural studies on [Gd(BPTA)1.5(Bpy)]·0.5DMF (3a) and [Dy(BPTA)1.5(Phen)]·0.5DMF (5b) indicated that the compounds have a two-dimensional structure. The Y compound exhibits blue emission, and the other compounds exhibit emission in the expected regions (λex = 350 nm). White light emission was achieved by careful mixing of the red (Eu3+) and green (Tb3+) components in the blue emitting Y compound. Thus, Y0.96Tb0.02Eu0.02 (bpy) and Y0.939Tb0.06Eu0.001 (phen) were found to show white emission when excited using a wavelength of 350 nm. The introduction of N-N-containing ancillary ligands (i.e., bpy and phen) increased the overall quantum yield (QY) of white light emission to 31% and 43%, respectively. The high QY observed for the Tb and Eu compounds was found to be sensitive and selective for the fluorometric detection of azinphos-methyl pesticide and trinitrophenol (TNP) in an aqueous medium at the ppb level. The same behaviour was observed when utilising the compounds as onsite paper strip sensors. Their magnetic properties were also studied, revealing for the Tb and Dy derivatives slow relaxation of the magnetisation at low temperature. The present study highlights the usefulness of rigid π-conjugated molecules such as 2,2'-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline in enhancing the many utilities of rare-earth-containing MOFs towards white light emission, the sensing of harmful and dangerous substances and magnetic properties.

Fabrication of metal-organic salts with heterogeneous conformations of a ligand as dual-functional urease and nitrification inhibitors

Urease inhibitors (UIs) and nitrification inhibitors (NIs) can greatly reduce nitrogen loss in agriculture soil. However, design and synthesis of an efficient and environmentally friendly dual-functional inhibitor is still a great challenge. Herein, four metal-organic salts (MOSs) based on heterogeneous conformations of the ligand N1,N1,N2,N2-tetrakis(2-fluorobenzyl)ethane-1,2-diamine (L), namely, [2HL]2+·[MCl4]2- (M = Cu, Zn, Cd, and Co), have been synthesized by the "second sphere" coordination method and structurally characterized in detail. Single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analyses reveal that the four MOSs are 0D supramolecular structures containing [2HL]2+ and [MCl4]2-, which are connected through non-covalent bonds. Furthermore, the urease and nitrification inhibitory activities of MOSs are evaluated, showing excellent nitrification inhibitory activity with the nitrification inhibitory rate as high as 70.57% on the 28th day in soil cultivation experiment. In particular, MOS 1 shows significant urease inhibitory activity with half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 0.89 ± 0.01 μM (0.5 h) and 1.87 ± 0.01 μM (3 h), which can serve as a dual-functional inhibitor.

Solvent Extraction and Conformation Rigidity: Actinide(IV) and Actinide(VI) Come Together

The first comprehensive structural and extraction study of a 2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-dicarboxamide (L diamide) extractant for U, Np, Pu, Th, Am, and Eu ions showed great potential for actinide separation due to steric hindrance of the amidic side phenyl ring of the given compound. The study of the complexes of An(VI) and Th(IV) with 2,2'-bipyridyldicarboxamide-type extractants demonstrated the structure of the extraction species for the first time. Investigation of the extraction properties with the radiometric and millimolar quantities of actinides showed similar extraction trends. For the first time, a metal-ion-induced phenyl-ring rotation restriction was found for the U, Th, and Eu complexes by employing temperature-dependent dynamic NMR. A study of the solution behavior of the complexes accompanied by density functional theory modeling studies elucidated the mechanism of the unusual C-N bond rotation restriction induced by metal coordination.

Competing Routes in the Extraction of Lanthanide Nitrates by 1,10-Phenanthroline-2,9-diamides: An Impact of Structure of Complexes on the Extraction

The fact of the fracture of the extraction curve of lanthanides by 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-diamides is explained in terms of the structure of complexes, solvent extraction data and quantum chemical calculations. The solvent extraction proceeds in two competing directions: in the form of neutral complexes LLn(NO₃)₃ and in the form of tight ion pairs {[LLn(NO₃)₂ H₂O]⁺ (NO₃^-).

Supramolecular Mn(III) Coordination Polymer with Treatment Activity on Diabetic Retinopathy

A new Mn(III) coordination polymer formulated as [Mn2(L)2Cl2(DMF)2]n (1, H2L is 2,2′-bipyridyl-6,6′-dicarboxylic acid; DMF is N,N′-dimethylformamide) was solvothermally prepared using Mn(ClO4)2 · 6H2O, H2L, and (CH3)4NCl as raw materials. The assay of SCXRD for 1 suggests that it features a 0D isolated dinuclear [Mn2(L)2Cl2(DMF)2] structure that exists in P-1 with triclinic system, and the cell parameters are a = 8.4593(2), b = 9.4675(5), c = 11.0147(6) Å, α = 86.023(3), β = 74.892(6), γ = 78.055(4)°, V = 833.11(7) Å3, and Z = 1. These isolated 0D dinuclear [Mn2(L)2Cl2(DMF)2] motifs were extended into a 1D supramolecular chain via the connection of intermolecular C–H…Cl together with the C–H…O H bond. Furthermore, the novel CP’s treatment activity against the diabetic retinopathy was investigated, and the associated mechanism of the new compound was discussed.

Way to Enforce Selectivity via Steric Hindrance: Improvement of Am(III)/Eu(III) Solvent Extraction by Loaded Diphosphonic Acid Esters

Hybrid donor extractants are a promising class of compounds for the separation of trivalent actinides and lanthanides. Here, we investigated a series of sterically loaded diphosphonate ligands based on bipyridine (BiPy-PO-iPr and BiPy-PO-cHex) and phenanthroline (Phen-PO-iPr and Phen-PO-cHex). We studied their complex formation with nitrates of trivalent f-elements in solvent extraction systems (Am and Eu) and homogeneous acetonitrile solutions (Nd, Eu, and Lu). Phenanthroline extractants demonstrated the highest efficiency and selectivity [SF(Am/Eu) up to 14] toward Am(III) extraction from nitric acid solutions among all of the studied diphosphonates of N-heterocycles. The binding constants established by UV-vis titration also indicated stronger binding of sterically impaired diphosphonates compared to the primary substituted diphosphonates. NMR titration and slope analysis during solvent extraction showed the formation of 2:1 complexes at high concentrations (>10^-3 mol/L) for phenanthroline-based ligands. According to UV-vis titrations at low concentrations (10^-5-10^-6 mol/L), the phenanthroline-based ligands formed 1:1 complexes. Bipyridine-based ligands formed 1:1 complexes regardless of the ligand concentration. Luminescence titrations revealed that the quantum yields of the complexes with Eu(III) were 81 ± 8% (BiPy-PO-iPr) and 93 ± 9% (Phen-PO-iPr). Single crystals of the structures [Lu(μ²,κ⁴-(iPrO)₂P(O)Phen(O)₂(OiPr))(NO₃)₂]₂ and Eu(Phen-PO-iPr)(NO₃)₃ were obtained by chemical synthesis with the Phen-PO-iPr ligand. X-ray diffraction studies revealed a closer contact of the f-element with the aromatic N atoms in the case of sterically loaded P═O ligands compared with sterically deficient ligands. Density functional theory calculations allowed us to rationalize the observed selectivity trends in terms of the bond length, Mayer bond order, and preorganization energy.

De novo designed coiled coils as scaffolds for lanthanides, including novel imaging agents with a twist

The design of artificial miniature lanthanide proteins, provide an opportunity to access new functional metalloproteins as well as insight into native lanthanide biochemistry.

Tuning coordination chemistry through the second sphere in designed metallocoiled coils

The metal hydration state within a designed coiled coil can be progressively tuned across the full integer range (3 → 0 aqua ligands), by careful choice of a second sphere terminal residue, including the lesser used Trp. Potential implications include a four-fold change in MRI relaxivity when applied to lanthanide coiled coils.

Secondary-Sphere Chlorolanthanide(III) Complexes with a 1,3,5-Triazine-Based Ligand Supported by Anion-π, π-π, and Hydrogen-Bonding Interactions

2,4,6-Dipicolylamine-functionalized 1,3,5-triazine (dpat) was isolated. When reacted with LaCl₃, compound [(LaCl₆)(H₃dpat)][H₂O]₂ (1) formed, which crystallized in the monoclinic P2₁/n space group with parameters a = 11.47 Å, b = 19.22 Å, c = 20.98 Å, V = 4652.02 Å, and β = 90.53°. When reacted with NdCl₃, the complex [NdCl₃(H₂O)₄(H₃dpat)][Cl]₃(MeOH)₂ (2) crystallized in the monoclinic P2₁/n space group with unit cell parameters a = 20.05 Å, b = 12.81 Å, c = 20.64 Å, V = 5004.40 Å, and β = 110.20°. In both cases, the dpat ligand forms a bowl-shaped cavity that partially envelops the Ln^III-containing central unit, which is anionic in 1 and neutral in 2. The formation of these outer-sphere complexes is supported by secondary interactions, including π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and anion-π between the chlorolanthanide(III) fragment and the electron-deficient 1,3,5-triazine ring. Evidence of protonation of the pyridine rings in dpat was substantiated through the isolation of [H₂dpat][Cl]₂ (3). This compound crystallized in the monoclinic C2/c space group with parameters a = 11.93 Å, b = 20.22 Å, c = 15.28 Å, V = 3664.97 Å, and β = 94.35°. Four pyridine rings are pairwise protonated in 3. dpat showed a moderate ability to extract La^III from an aqueous to an organic phase, indicating its potential, through judicious manipulation of secondary-sphere interactions, as the starting point for efficient extractants for Ln^III ions.

Effect of Heterocyclic Ring on LnIII Coordination, Luminescence and Extraction of Diamides of 2,2'-Bipyridyl-6,6'-Dicarboxylic Acid

We have synthesized and examined several complexes of lanthanides with diamides of 2,2′-bipyridyl-6,6′-dicarboxylic acid bearing various hetaryl-based side chains for the elucidation of the effect of the heterocycle on the structure and properties of the ligands. The multigram scale methods for the preparation of various N-alkyl-hetaryls and their diamides were developed. The solid state structure of 6-methyl-2-pyridylamide of 2,2′-bipyridyl-6,6′-dicarboxylic acid possesses a flat structure where the conformation is completely different from that previously observed for N-alkylated 2,2′-bipyridyl-6,6′-dicarboxamides and 2,6-pyridinedicarboxamides. The complexes of new ligands were synthesized and NMR and X-Ray studied their structure in solution and solid state. The results demonstrate that complexes possess the same structures both in solid state and in solution. Stability constants of the complexes were less when comparing with dimethyl-substituted diamides, but higher than for unsubstituted dianilide. Contrarily, the extraction ability of 2-pyridyl-diamide is significantly lower than for corresponding anilide. Specific interaction of extractant with solvent molecules, which is not available for electron-sink pyridine amides, can explain this. The luminescence of new Eu complexes was significantly higher than for all previously 2,2′-bipyridyl-6,6′-dicarboxamides and QY reaches 18%. Asymmetry ratios of Eu complexes were 25% higher when compared other complexes with 2,2′-bipyridyl-6,6′-dicarboxamides, which indicates large deviation from the inversion center.
