Synthesis and applications of biomass-derived porous carbon materials in energy utilization and environmental remediation

Renewable biomass and its waste are considered among the most promising applications materials owing to the depletion of fossil fuel and concerns about environmental pollution. Notably, advanced porous carbon materials derived from carbon-rich biomass precursors exhibit controllable pore structures, large surface areas, natural microstructures, and abundant functional groups. In addition, these three-dimensional structures provide sufficient reaction sites and fascinating physicochemical properties that are conducive to heteroatom doping and functional modification. This review systematically summarizes the design methods and related mechanisms of biomass-derived porous carbon materials (BDPCMs), discusses how the synthesis conditions influence the structure and performance of the carbon material, and emphasizes the importance of its use in energy utilization and environmental remediation applications. Current BDPCMs challenges and future development strategies are finally discussed to provide systematic information for further synthesis and performance optimization, which are expected to lead to novel ideas for the future development of bio-based carbon materials.

Positive Charge Holes Revealed by Energy Band Theory in Multiphase Tix O2x-1 and Exploration of its Microscopic Electromagnetic Loss Mechanism

Although numerous experimental investigations have been carried out on the problem of defect engineering in semiconductor absorbers, the relationship among charge carrier, defects, heterointerfaces, and electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption has not been established systematically. Herein, the new thermodynamic and kinetic control strategy is proposed to establish multiphase Tix O2 x -1 (1 ≤ x ≤ 6) through a hydrogenation calcination. The TiOC-900 composite shows the efficient EM wave absorption capability with a minimum reflection loss (RLmin ) of -69.6 dB at a thickness of 2.04 mm corresponding to an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.0 GHz due to the holes induced conductance loss and heterointerfaces induced interfacial polarization. Benefiting from the controllable preparation of multiphase Tix O2 x -1 , a new pathway is proposed for designing high-efficiency EM wave absorbing semiconducting oxides. The validity of the method for adopting energy band theory to explore the underlying relations among charge carriers, defects, heterointerfaces, and EM properties in multiphase Tix O2 x -1 is demonstrated for the first time, which is of great importance in optimizing the EM wave absorption performance by electronic structure tailoring.

Ultralight reduced graphene oxide aerogels prepared by cation-assisted strategy for excellent electromagnetic wave absorption

In this work, to maximize the unique attributes of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) for excellent microwave absorption, the ultralight RGO aerogels with improved dispersion and interface polarization performance were fabricated via a facile cation-assisted hydrothermal treatment process. The prepared RGO/paraffin composite exhibits excellent microwave absorption (MA) performance in a wideband frequency range of 8.0 ∼ 18.0 GHz with an ultralow absorbent content of 0.5 wt.%. Such performance is comparable with most previously reported results on RGO-based composites but required much higher absorbent content. The mechanisms for the enhancement of polarization relaxation loss and conductive loss were investigated in detail. This study provides a promising and facile method for preparing RGO-based excellent microwave absorption materials with ultra-low filler content, which is significant for designing efficient MA absorbers.
