Pathway to a molecular calcium methyl

The dimeric β-diketiminato calcium hydride, [(BDI)CaH]2 (BDI = HC{(Me)CN-2,6-iPr2C6H3}2), reacts with ZnMe2 to afford the bimetallic calcium zincate complex, [(BDI)Ca(μ-CH3)2Zn(μ-H)]2, which subsequently undergoes an intramolecular reaction to effect the formation of [(BDI)CaMe]2, a notable omission from the homologous series of β-diketiminato alkylcalcium derivatives.

Low-Valent Transition Metalate Anions in Synthesis, Small Molecule Activation, and Catalysis

This review surveys the synthesis and reactivity of low-oxidation state metalate anions of the d-block elements, with an emphasis on contributions reported between 2006 and 2022. Although the field has a long and rich history, the chemistry of transition metalate anions has been greatly enhanced in the last 15 years by the application of advanced concepts in complex synthesis and ligand design. In recent years, the potential of highly reactive metalate complexes in the fields of small molecule activation and homogeneous catalysis has become increasingly evident. Consequently, exciting applications in small molecule activation have been developed, including in catalytic transformations. This article intends to guide the reader through the fascinating world of low-valent transition metalates. The first part of the review describes the synthesis and reactivity of d-block metalates stabilized by an assortment of ligand frameworks, including carbonyls, isocyanides, alkenes and polyarenes, phosphines and phosphorus heterocycles, amides, and redox-active nitrogen-based ligands. Thereby, the reader will be familiarized with the impact of different ligand types on the physical and chemical properties of metalates. In addition, ion-pairing interactions and metal-metal bonding may have a dramatic influence on metalate structures and reactivities. The complex ramifications of these effects are examined in a separate section. The second part of the review is devoted to the reactivity of the metalates toward small inorganic molecules such as H2, N2, CO, CO2, P4 and related species. It is shown that the use of highly electron-rich and reactive metalates in small molecule activation translates into impressive catalytic properties in the hydrogenation of organic molecules and the reduction of N2, CO, and CO2. The results discussed in this review illustrate that the potential of transition metalate anions is increasingly being tapped for challenging catalytic processes with relevance to organic synthesis and energy conversion. Therefore, it is hoped that this review will serve as a useful resource to inspire further developments in this dynamic research field.

2-Anilidomethylpyridine-Derived Three-Coordinate Zinc Hydride: The Journey Unveils Anilide Backbone's Reactive Nature

Low-coordinate heteroleptic zinc hydrides are catalytically important but rare and synthetically challenging. We herein report three-coordinate monomeric zinc hydride on a 2-anilidomethylpyridine framework (NNL). The synthetic success comes through systematically screening a few different routes from different precursors. During the process, the ligand's anilide backbone interestingly appears to be more reactive than Zn's terminal site to electrophilic Lewis and Brønsted acids. The proligand NNLH reacts with [Zn{N(SiMe3)2}2] and ZnEt2 to give [(NNL)ZnA] (A = N(SiMe3)2 (1), Et(2)). Both are inert to PhSiH3 and H2 but react with HBpin only through the internal Zn-Nanilide bond to give the borylated ligand NNLBpin (3). The reactions of 1 and 2 with Ph3EOH (E = C, Si) afford a series of divergent compounds like [(NNLH)Zn(OSiPh3)2] (4), [Zn3(OSiPh3)4Et2] (5), and [EtZn(OCPh3)] (6). But in all cases, it is invariably the Zn-Nanilide bond protonated by the -OH with equal or higher preference than the terminal Zn-N or Zn-C bonds. A DFT analysis rationalizes the origin of such a reactivity pattern. Realizing that an acid-free route might be the key, reacting [(NNL)Li] with ZnBr2 gives [(NNL)Zn(μ-Br)]2 (7), which on successively treating with KOSiPh3 and PhSiH3 gives the desired [(NNL)ZnH] (8) as a three-coordinate monomer with a terminal Zn-H bond. Estimating the ligand steric in 8 shows the openness in Zn's coordination sphere, a desired criterion for efficient catalysis. This and a positive influence of the pyridyl sidearm is reflected in 8's superior activity in hydroborating PhC(O)Me by HBpin in comparison to Jones' two-coordinate anilido zinc hydride.

Synthesis and Reactivity of a Zinc Diazoalkyl Complex: [3+2] Cycloaddition Reaction with Carbon Monoxide

This work reports the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of the first example of a well-defined zinc α-diazoalkyl complex. Treatment of zinc(I)-zinc(I) bonded compound L2 Zn2 [L=CH3 C(2,6-i Pr2 C6 H3 N)CHC(CH3 )(NCH2 CH2 PPh2 )] or zinc(II) hydride LZnH with trimethylsilyldiazomethane affords zinc diazoalkyl complex LZnC(N2 )SiMe3 . This complex liberates N2 in the presence of a nickel catalyst to form an α-zincated phosphorus ylide by reacting with the pendant phosphine. It selectively undergoes formal [3+2] cycloaddition with CO2 or CO to form the corresponding product with a five-membered heterocyclic core. Notably, the use of CO in such a [3+2] cycloaddition reaction is unprecedented, reflecting a novel CO reaction mode.

Heterometallic bond activation enabled by unsymmetrical ligand scaffolds: bridging the opposites

Heterobi- and multimetallic complexes providing close proximity between several metal centers serve as active species in artificial and enzymatic catalysis, and in model systems, showing unique modes of metal-metal cooperative bond activation. Through the rational design of well-defined, unsymmetrical ligand scaffolds, we create a convenient approach to support the assembly of heterometallic species in a well-defined and site-specific manner, preventing them from scrambling and dissociation. In this perspective, we will outline general strategies for the design of unsymmetrical ligands to support heterobi- and multimetallic complexes that show reactivity in various types of heterometallic cooperative bond activation.

Theoretical Analysis of Polynuclear Zinc Complexes Isolobally Related to Hydrocarbons

Based on the isolobal analogy of ZnCp (Cp = η⁵-C₅H₅) and ZnR (R = alkyl or aryl group) fragments with hydrogen atom and fragment [Zn(CO)₂] with a CH₂ carbene, the following complexes [(ZnCp)₂{µ-Zn(CO)₂}], 1, [(ZnPh)₂{µ-Zn(CO)₂}], 2, [(ZnPh){µ-Zn(CO)₂}(ZnCp)], 3, [(ZnCp)₂{µ-Zn₂(CO)₄}], 4, [(ZnPh)₂{µ-Zn₂(CO)₄}], 5, [(ZnPh){µ-Zn(CO)₂}₂(ZnCp)], 6, [Zn₃(CO)₆], 7 and [Zn₅(CO)₁₀], 8, were built. These polynuclear zinc compounds are isolobally related to simple hydrocarbons (methane, ethane, cyclopropane and cyclopentane). They have been studied by density functional theory (DFT) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) to compare the nature and topology of the Zn-Zn bond with previous studies. There are bond critical points (BCPs) between each pair of adjacent Zn centers in complexes 1-8 with Zn-Zn distances within the range 2.37-2.50 Å. The nature of the Zn-Zn bond in these complexes can be described as polar rather than pure covalent bonds. Although in a subtle way, the presence of different ligands and zinc oxidation states introduces asymmetry and polarity in the Zn-Zn bond. In addition, the Zn-Zn bond is delocalized in nature in complex 7 whereas it can be described as a localized bond for the remaining zinc complexes here studied.

Reversible Oxidative Addition of Zinc Hydride at a Gallium(I)-Centre: Labile Mono- and Bis(hydridogallyl)zinc Complexes

In the presence of TMEDA (N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine), partially deaggregated zinc dihydride as hydrocarbon suspensions react with the gallium(I) compound [(BDI)Ga] (I, BDI={HC(C(CH₃ )N(2,6-iPr₂ -C₆ H₃ ))₂ }^- ) by formal oxidative addition of a Zn-H bond to the gallium(I) centre. Dissociation of the labile TMEDA ligand in the resulting complex [(BDI)Ga(H)-(H)Zn(tmeda)] (1) facilitates insertion of a second equiv. of I into the remaining Zn-H to form a thermally sensitive trinuclear species [{(BDI)Ga(H)}₂ Zn] (2). Compound 1 exchanges with polymeric zinc dideuteride [ZnD₂ ]_n in the presence of TMEDA, and with compounds I and 2 via sequential and reversible ligand dissociation and gallium(I) insertion. Spectroscopic and computational studies demonstrate the reversibility of oxidative addition of each Zn-H bond to the gallium(I) centres.

Synthesis and Reactivity of Triangular Heterometallic Complexes Containing Zn-Zn Bond

This work provides a facile access to a series of triangular [Zn₂M] (M = group 10 and 11 metals) clusters. Treatment of Zn-Zn-bonded compounds [LZn-ZnL] (L = CH₃C(2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃N)CHC(CH₃)(NCH₂CH₂PR₂); R = Ph, ⁱPr) with zero-valent transition-metal reagents selectively afforded the corresponding triangular clusters [Zn₂M], where M = Ni(0), Pd(0), and Pt(0). Notably, the isoelectronic triangular clusters [Zn₂M]⁺, where M = Ag(I) and Cu(I), could also be obtained by reactions of [LZn-ZnL] with AgOTf and CuOTf, respectively. The [Zn₂Ag]⁺ complex containing elusive Zn-Ag bonds was investigated by density functional theory analysis, showing a 3c-2e bonding feature in the metallic ring. The electrochemical behaviors of [Zn₂M] complexes were examined and revealed the donation of electron density from the Zn-Zn σ-bond to the metal centers. Reaction of the [Zn₂Ni] complex with isocyanide gave heterometallic species by coordination of isocyanide to the nickel center, keeping the trimetallic ring core structure intact. In contrast, the Zn-Zn bond was rapidly cleaved upon treatment of the [Zn₂Ni] complex with dihydrogen or phenyl acetylene, generating the hydride- or acetylide-bridged heterotrimetallic complex.

Zinc-Promoted ZnMe/ZnPh Exchange in Eight-Coordinate [Ru(PPh3 )2 (ZnMe)4 H2 ]

The syntheses, reactivity and electronic structure analyses of [Ru(PPh₃)₂(ZnMe)₄H₂], 1 a, and [Ru(PPh₃)₂(ZnPh)₄H₂], 2 b, are reported. 1 a exhibits an 8‐coordinate Ru centre with axial phosphines and a symmetrical (2 : 2) arrangement of ZnMe ligands in the equatorial plane. The ZnMe ligands in 1 a undergo facile, sequential exchange with ZnPh₂ to give 2 b, which shows a 3 : 1 arrangement of ZnPh ligands. Both 1 a and 2 b exist in equilibrium with their respective 3 : 1 and 2 : 2 isomers. Mechanisms for ZnMe/ZnPh exchange and isomerisation are proposed using DFT calculations. The relationships of these {Ru(ZnR)₄H₂} species to isoelectronic Group 8 transition metal polyhydrides and related Schlenk equilibria in the Negishi reaction are discussed.

Synthesis and reactivity of heterometallic complexes containing Mg- or Zn-metalloligands

Heteronuclear metal complexes comprising main group metals and transition metals have attracted widespread attention from researchers due to their applications in stoichiometric and catalytic activation of small molecules with possible cooperative effects. Herein, the advances of heterometallic complexes containing Mg- or Zn-metalloligands over the past ten years are reviewed. They consist of two parts: (i) synthetic approaches to heterometallic complexes. Only a brief discussion is made on the different Mg/Zn precursors since they have been summarized before. (ii) Stoichiometric and catalytic reactivities of heterometallic complexes containing Mg/Zn metalloligands. The exploration of the cooperative catalytic reaction of heterometallic complexes is still in its infancy, promising but challenging; thus, further investigations are required in the future.

Synthesis and reactivity of heteroleptic zinc(I) complexes toward heteroallenes

Heteroleptic zinc(I) complexes L^1,2Zn-ZnCp* (L¹ = HC[C(CF₃)NC₆F₅]₂1; L² = HC[C(Me)NDipp]₂; Dipp = 2,6-i-Pr₂C₆H₃2) are synthesized by reactions of Cp*₂Zn₂ with L¹H and L²ZnH. 2 reacts with t-BuNCO to give unprecedented carbamate complex (4), while reactions with RN₃ gave bis-hexazene, triazenide, and trimeric azide complexes (5-7).

Nickel-catalyzed synthesis of Zn(I)-Zn(I) bonded compounds

This work reports the first catalyzed synthesis of d-block metal-metal bonded complexes. The treatment of terminal zinc hydrides [LZnH] [L = CH₃C(2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃N)CHC(CH₃)(N(CH₂)_nCH₂PR₂); n = 1, 2; R = Ph, ⁱPr] in the presence of 5 mol% Ni(CO)₂(PPh₃)₂ afforded Zn(I)-Zn(I) bonded compounds [L₂Zn₂] in high isolated yields with concomitant elimination of dihydrogen. Stoichiometric reactions, kinetic studies and DFT calculations were conducted to elucidate the reaction mechanism.

Bonding and Reactivity of a Pair of Neutral and Cationic Heterobimetallic RuZn2 Complexes

A combined experimental and computational study of the structure and reactivity of two [RuZn2Me2] complexes, neutral [Ru(PPh3)(Ph2PC6H4)2(ZnMe)2] (2) and cationic [Ru(PPh3)2(Ph2PC6H4)(ZnMe)2][BArF4] ([BArF4] = [B{3,5-(CF3)2C6H3}4]) (3), is presented. Structural and computational analyses indicate these complexes are best formulated as containing discrete ZnMe ligands in which direct Ru-Zn bonding is complemented by weaker Zn···Zn interactions. The latter are stronger in 2, and both complexes exhibit an additional Zn···Caryl interaction with a cyclometalated phosphine ligand, this being stronger in 3. Both 2 and 3 show diverse reactivity under thermolysis and with Lewis bases (PnBu3, PCy3, and IMes). With 3, all three Lewis bases result in the loss of [ZnMe]+. In contrast, 2 undergoes PPh3 substitution with PnBu3, but with IMes, loss of ZnMe2 occurs to form [Ru(PPh3)(C6H4PPh2)(C6H4PPhC6H4Zn(IMes))H] (7). The reaction of 3 with H2 affords the cationic trihydride complex [Ru(PPh3)2(ZnMe)2(H)3][BArF4] (12). Computational analyses indicate that both 12 and 7 feature bridging hydrides that are biased toward Ru over Zn.

Molecular Main Group Metal Hydrides

This review serves to document advances in the synthesis, versatile bonding, and reactivity of molecular main group metal hydrides within Groups 1, 2, and 12-16. Particular attention will be given to the emerging use of said hydrides in the rapidly expanding field of Main Group element-mediated catalysis. While this review is comprehensive in nature, focus will be given to research appearing in the open literature since 2001.

Palladium-Catalysed C-H Bond Zincation of Arenes: Scope, Mechanism, and the Role of Heterometallic Intermediates

Catalytic methods that transform C-H bonds into C-X bonds are of paramount importance in synthesis. A particular focus has been the generation of organoboranes, organosilanes and organostannanes from simple hydrocarbons (X=B, Si, Sn). Despite the importance of organozinc compounds (X=Zn), their synthesis by the catalytic functionalisation of C-H bonds remains unknown. Herein, we show that a palladium catalyst and zinc hydride reagent can be used to transform C-H bonds into C-Zn bonds. The new catalytic C-H zincation protocol has been applied to a variety of arenes-including fluoroarenes, heteroarenes, and benzene-with high chemo- and regioselectivity. A mechanistic study shows that heterometallic Pd-Zn complexes play a key role in catalysis. The conclusions of this work are twofold; the first is that valuable organozinc compounds are finally accessible by catalytic C-H functionalisation, the second is that heterometallic complexes are intimately involved in bond-making and bond-breaking steps of C-H functionalisation.

Hydroboration of nitriles and imines by highly active zinc dihydride catalysts

Eco-friendly zinc dihydrides stabilized by N-heterocyclic carbenes were demonstrated to be highly efficient catalysts for the double hydroboration of nitriles with pinacolborane, exhibiting turnover frequencies up to 3000 h⁻¹ at room temperature under solvent-free conditions. The reactions afforded corresponding diboronated amines with excellent yields and good functional group tolerance. A single Zn–H insertion product was isolated from a stoichiometric reaction of zinc dihydride with nitrile, and was proved to be an active species in this transformation. Kinetic studies were performed to give some insights into the catalytic reactions. In addition, zinc dihydride species also showed high activity for the hydroboration of imines to boronated amines.

Molecular zinc dihydrides were found to be highly efficient catalysts for the hydroboration of nitriles and imines at room temperature under solvent-free conditions.

Nickel(0)-Induced β-H Elimination of Magnesium Alkyls: Formation and Reactivity of Heterometallic Hydrides

We report the synthesis and reactivity of heterometallic Mg-Ni complexes with bridging hydrides. Treatment of magnesium monoalkyl complexes, which are supported by a tridentate β-diketiminato ligand bearing a pendent phosphine group, with nickel(0) reagent Ni(COD)₂ (COD: 1,5-cyclooctadiene) at a molar ratio of 2:1 resulted in the formation of a heterotrimetallic hydride-bridged [Mg-Ni-Mg] complex via facile elimination of the corresponding alkenes. A heterobimetallic hydride-bridged [Mg-Ni] complex served as an intermediate species for the formation of the [Mg-Ni-Mg] complex. Computational studies revealed that the reaction was initiated by coordination of nickel to magnesium followed by an alkyl group transfer. β-H elimination at the nickel center subsequently occurred to give the heterometallic hydride-bridged complex. Density functional theory analysis also highlighted a three-center two-electron interaction for the Mg-H-Ni unit. The hydride-bridged [Mg-Ni-Mg] complex showed diverse reactivity toward unsaturated small molecules. For instance, reactions with isocyanides provided heterometallic species by coordination of isocyanides to the nickel center, with no subsequent reduction detected. Isocyanides could also be dissociated at 80 °C. In contrast, hydromagnesiation occurred upon treatment of the heterotrimetallic hydride with carbodiimides, affording C₃-symmetric complexes with three heteroleptic magnesium mixed β-diketiminate/amidinate moieties. The hydride-bridged heterotrimetallic complex underwent dehydrogenation reaction with phenyl acetylene to produce an acetylide-bridged [Mg-Ni-Mg] complex.

Formation of Zn-Zn and Zn-Pd Bonded Complexes by Reactions of Terminal Zinc Hydrides with Pd(II) Species

Divalent palladium-induced homocoupling of terminal zinc hydrides to zinc-zinc bonded complexes was achieved herein. Reactions of zinc hydrides [LZnH] (L = CH₃C(2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃N)CHC(CH₃)(N(CH₂)_nCH₂PPh₂); 1a: n = 1; 1b: n = 2) with 0.5 equiv of allyl(cyclopentadienyl)palladium(II) afforded heterotrinuclear [Zn₂Pd] complexes 3 containing direct Zn-Zn and Zn-Pd bonds, with concomitant elimination of propylene and cyclopentadiene. Complexes 3 were also accessed by the reactions of zinc hydrides 1 with allylpalladium(II) chloride with release of propylene and hydrogen chloride. Treatment of zinc hydrides 1 with 1 equiv of allyl(cyclopentadienyl)palladium(II) gave Zn-Pd bonded complex 5 by elimination of propylene, which can be transformed into heterotrinuclear complex 3 by further reaction with one additional molar equivalent of zinc hydrides. Heterobimetallic Zn-Pd complex 5b was found to be an effective catalyst in the hydrosilylation of benzaldehyde and its derivatives. Reaction of 5b with silane reagent Ph₂SiH₂ produced [Pd₂Si₂H₂] complex 8 with cleavage of the Pd-Zn bond, which served as an initiating species in the catalytic reaction. Complexes 4b, 5, and 8 in this study were characterized by X-ray diffraction.

Scandium complexes containing β-diketiminato ligands with pendant phosphanyl groups: competition between Sc/γ-C [4 + 2] cycloaddition and Sc/P frustrated Lewis pair reactions

Scandium complexes based on β-diketimine bearing a phosphanyl group show divergent reaction pathways toward phenyl isocyanate, namely Sc/γ-C [4 + 2] cycloaddition and Sc/P FLP reactions.
