Abstract
The selenization of natural products refers to the chemical modification method of artificially introducing selenium atoms into natural products to interact with the functional groups in the target molecule to form selenides. Nowadays, even though scientists in fields involving organic selenium compounds have achieved numerous results due to their continuous investment, few comprehensive and systematic summaries relating to their research results can be found. The present paper summarizes the selenization modification methods of several kinds of important natural products, such as polysaccharides, proteins/polypeptides, polyphenols, lipids, and cyclic compounds, as well as the basic principles or mechanisms of the selenizing methods. On this basis, this paper explored the future development trend of the research field relating to selenized natural products, and it is hoped to provide some suggestions for directional selenization modification and the application of natural active ingredients.

Synthesis, characterization, and anticancer activity of protamine sulfate stabilized selenium nanoparticles. Food Res Int 2023; 164:112435. Abstract
Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have attracted much recent interest as nutraceuticals, while they face great challenges, such as poor stability and low cellular uptake efficiency. This study introduced a facile approach to synthesizing protamine sulfate (PS) functionalized selenium nanoparticles (PS-SeNPs) by using PS as a surface decorator. The monodisperse spherical PS-SeNPs with a particle size of 130 nm and a ζ-potential of +31 mV were ligated with PS through Se-N, Se-O bonds, and physical adsorption, which exhibits excellent physical stability against pH, temperature, and storage time. The positive surface charge of PS-SeNPs contributed to the enhancement of cellular uptake efficiency by endocytosis, which was 3-times higher than bare SeNPs. Compared to SeNPs (IC50 = 17.675 μg/mL), PS-SeNPs could dramatically inhibit the proliferation of HepG2 cells with an IC50 value of 5.507 μg/mL, as reflected by the induction of apoptosis, S phase arresting, overproduction of intracellular ROS, and depolarization of mitochondria membrane. Overall, these results demonstrated the great potential of PS-SeNPs that can be applied as a functional ingredient in foods and nutraceuticals.

Abstract
Acrylamide (AA) occurs in both various environmental and dietary sources and has raised widespread concern as a probable carcinogen. Glycidamide (GA) is the main genotoxic metabolite through P450 2E1 (CYP2E1). In the present study, we investigate the protective effect of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and (-)-epicatechin (EC) against AA- and GA-induced hepatotoxicity in HepG2 cells. The results demonstrated that EC and EGCG inhibited AA- and GA-induced cytotoxicity and mitochondria-mediated cellular apoptosis. Moreover, exposure to AA (100 μg/mL) and GA (50 μg/mL) caused cell cycle arrest and DNA damage, while EC and EGCG ranging from 12.5 to 50 μg/mL rescued cell cycle arrest and inhibited DNA damage. Furthermore, EC and EGCG down-regulated pro-apoptotic protein Bax and Caspase 3 after 24 h treatment in HepG2 cells exposed to AA (100 μg/mL) or GA (50 μg/mL). Also, the intervention with EC or EGCG up-regulated DNA repair related protein PARP and down-regulated expression of cleaved-PARP. Besides, EC exerted better protective effect than EGCG against AA- and GA-induced cytotoxicity in HepG2 cells. Altogether, EC and EGCG were effective in protecting AA- and GA-induced hepatotoxicity via rescuing cellular apoptosis and DNA damage, as well as promoting cell cycle progression in HepG2 cells.

Abstract
This study introduces a facile method for synthesizing O-benzoylselenoglycolic chitosan with a high selenium concentration of 45.32 mg/g. The characterizations of the chemical structure via FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, TGA, and XRD analyses indicated that benzoylselenoglycolic acid was successfully grafted onto the C6 hydroxyl group of chitosan. The anti-cancer activity of the O-benzoylselenoglycolic chitosan was investigated in vitro using a HepG2 cell model, and the results indicated that it has excellent anticancer activity against HepG2 cancer cells with an IC50 value of 0.53 μg/mL while exhibiting non-toxicity against normal cells (L-02). Furthermore, a mechanistic study revealed that the O-benzoylselenoglycolic chitosan could induce early apoptosis, G2/M, S phase arrest, and activation of caspase-3 activity to inhibit the HepG2 cell growth. This study has led to novel organic selenium species, and the results suggest its potential to be used as an effective ingredient for cancer prevention and therapy in the food and pharmaceutical fields.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace chemical element that is widely distributed worldwide. Se exerts its immunomodulatory and nutritional activities in the human body in the form of selenoproteins. Se has increasingly appeared as a potential trace element associated with many human diseases, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Recently, increasing evidence has suggested that Se and selenoproteins exert their immunomodulatory effects on HCC by regulating the molecules of oxidative stress, inflammation, immune response, cell proliferation and growth, angiogenesis, signaling pathways, apoptosis, and other processes in vitro cell studies and in vivo animal studies. Se concentrations are generally low in tissues of patients with HCC, such as blood, serum, scalp hair, and toenail. However, Se concentrations were higher in HCC patient tissues after Se supplementation than before supplementation. This review summarizes the significant relationship between Se and HCC, and details the role of Se as a novel immunomodulatory or immunotherapeutic approach against HCC.

Abstract
Ovalbumin is the main protein component of egg white. Selenium is one of the essential trace elements. In our research, ovalbumin was modified into seleno-ovalbumin. After seleno-modification, the FTIR spectrum of seleno-ovalbumin appeared two new absorption peaks which belonged to the characteristic absorption peaks of Se-O and SeO. Seleno-ovalbumin could reduce the damage of cancer to immune organs, improve the proliferation capacities of T and B lymphocytes, enhance the NK cells cytotoxicity and increase the phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages of H22-bearing mice. Besides, Se-OVA could block the cell cycle of solid tumors cells in G0/G1 phase and accelerate the apoptosis of solid tumors cells through mitochondrial pathway.

Abstract
β-lactoglobulin is one of the nutrition allergens present in the milk of many mammals, with the exception of human. This protein belongs to the family of lipocalins, consisting of nine antiparallel β-strands (β-A to β-I) and one α-helix. This structure allows it to serve as a nanotransporter of various nature ligands in a pH dependent manner, which allows us to confidently consider it as a reliable carrier of drugs directly into the intestine, bypassing the destructive acidic environment of the stomach. Based on the latest data, this review describes the currently known methods of reducing the allergenicity of beta-lactoglobulin, as well as the mechanisms and methods of forming complexes of this protein with ligands, which emphasizes its importance and versatility and explains the growing interest in studying its properties in recent decades, and also opens up prospects for its practical application in medicine and pharmaceuticals.
