Abstract
Direct vicinal difunctionalization of π-systems has emerged as a powerful platform for constructing multiple bonds in a single synthetic operation using simple chemical feedstocks. Over the past decade, there has been exponential growth in the direct construction of successive C-S and C-I bonds using a wide variety of sulfonyl and iodide reactants through 1,2-iodosulfonylation of alkynes in a regio- and stereo-selective manner. In this review, we mainly focus on the recent developments in the preparation of β-iodovinyl sulfones and their practical applications in organic synthesis. The most promising photoredox and electrochemical transformations for synthesizing β-iodovinyl sulfones are also reviewed. The multifunctional β-iodovinyl sulfones have recently been burgeoning as versatile synthetic precursors due to the combination of vinyl iodide and vinyl sulfone moieties, essential building blocks for diverse synthetic manipulations. We hereby present the chemistry of β-iodovinyl sulfones, which can be classified into numerous sections based on the sulfonyl surrogates, and potential synthetic approaches are systematically outlined.

Abstract
We have developed the first I2/base-catalyzed regio- and stereoselective intermolecular β-amidosulfonylation of terminal alkynes using sodium sulfinates and quinoxalinone derivatives. The present methodology is compatible with a broad spectrum of various heterocyclic amides, terminal alkynes, and sodium sulfinates. It provides rapid access to valuable (Z)-β-amidovinyl sulfones at mild conditions. Moreover, the synthetic application of this methodology was demonstrated by the late-stage functionalization of numerous bioactive molecules.

Abstract
Different addition modes of sulfinic acids were developed for the chemodivergent sulfonylation of enynones, where the ionic sulfonylation to an alkyne moiety of enynones was effected through a salt-controlled syn-addition pathway. The radical sulfonylation of an alkene moiety also provided the stereodefined sulfonylated alkenes. A one-pot tandem sequence of the Ti(Oi-Pr)4-catalyzed α-vinyl aldol condensation of (E)-β-chlorovinyl ketones followed by the chemodivergent sulfonylations was also explored, allowing for ready access to highly substituted dienes and enynes.

Abstract
The difunctionalization reactions of easily available and inexpensive alkynes have emerged as a reliable, powerful, and step-economical approach for the construction of highly substituted complex alkenes in a one-pot manner, without the need for isolation of intermediates. A wide variety of transformations based on this concept have been successfully achieved for the preparation of synthetically and biologically important β-halovinyl sulfone scaffolds. In this Review, we summarize the recent advances and developments in this field and present a comprehensive overview of halosulfonylation of alkyne substrates with emphasis on the mechanistic features of the reactions.

Abstract
Organosulfur compounds have a pivotal role in the functionalities of many natural products, pharmaceuticals and organic materials. For these reasons, the search for new methodologies for the formation of carbon-sulfur bonds has been the object of intensive work for organic chemists. However, the proposed strategies suffer from various drawbacks, such as volatility, toxicity, and instability of the sulfur sources or the use of VOC solvents. In this review, we summarise the recent protocols which have the goal of obtaining sulfones, thioethers, thiazines, thiazepines and sulfonamides in an unconventional and/or sustainable way. The use of starting materials less invasive and toxic with respect to the traditional reagents, alternative solvents such as water, ionic liquids or deep eutectic solvents, the exploitation of ultrasound and electrochemistry, increasing the efficiency of the process, are reported. Moreover, representative reaction mechanisms are also discussed.

Abstract
An inimitable illustration of a green-light-induced, regioselective difunctionalization of terminal alkynes has been disclosed using sodium arylsulfinates and carboxylic acids in the presence of eosin Y as the photocatalyst. The present methodology is further demonstrated by employing NH4SCN as an S-centered nucleophile instead of carboxylic acid. The mechanistic investigation reveals a radical-induced iodosulfonylation followed by a base-mediated nucleophilic substitution. The mechanism is supported by various studies, viz., radical-trapping experiment, fluorescence quenching, and CV studies. In this protocol, (Z)-β-substituted vinylsulfones are obtained, exclusively covering a broad range of alkynes and nucleophiles, which are often unaddressed. The present strategy can tolerate structurally discrete substrates with steric bulk and different electronic properties, which provides a straightforward and practical pathway for the synthesis of highly functionalized (Z)-β-substituted vinylsulfones. Herein, C-O and C-S bonds are assembled simultaneously with the concomitant introduction of important functional groups, viz., ester, thiocyanate, and sulfone.

Abstract
Sulfur-containing scaffold, as a ubiquitous structural motif, has been frequently used in natural products, bioactive chemicals and pharmaceuticals, particularly C-S/N-S bonds are indispensable in many biological important compounds and pharmaceuticals. Development of mild and general methods for C-S/N-S bonds formation has great significance in modern research. Iodine and its derivatives have been recognized as inexpensive, environmentally benign and easy-handled catalysts or reagents to promote the construction of C-S/N-S bonds under mild reaction conditions, with good regioselectivities and broad substrate scope. Especially based on this, several new strategies, such as oxidation relay strategy, have been greatly developed and accelerated the advancement of this field. This review focuses on recent advances in iodine and its derivatives promoted hybridized C-S/N-S bonds formation. The features and mechanisms of corresponding reactions are summarized and the results of some cases are compared with those of previous reports. In addition, the future of this domain is discussed.

Abstract
A simple and green reaction was discovered for iodization-methylsulfoxidation of alkynes to access (E)-α-iodo-β-methylsulfonylalkenes. This is the first report for the synthesis of iodovinyl methylsulfones by employing alkynes to react with molecular iodine (I2), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and H2O. Additionally, this protocol represents a new avenue for utilizing DMSO as the source of the -SO2Me group and H2O as the "O" source for the construction of the -SO2Me group from DMSO, which is a valuable finding.

Abstract
An operationally simple, efficient, and metal-/peroxide-free three-component reaction of alkynes, iodine, and sodium sulfinates has been developed for the construction of highly functionalized tetrasubstituted alkenes. Iodo- and sulfonyl-containing tetrasubstituted alkenes, such as vinyl ketones, allylic alcohols, and conjugated enynes, could be obtained regio- and stereoselectively in up to 96% yield.
