A Review on Recent Advancements of Ni-NiO Nanocomposite as an Anode for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery

Recently, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been widely employed in automobiles, mining operations, space applications, marine vessels and submarines, and defense or military applications. As an anode, commercial carbon or carbon-based materials have some critical issues such as insufficient charge capacity and power density, low working voltage, deadweight formation, short-circuiting tendency initiated from dendrite formation, device warming up, etc., which have led to a search for carbon alternatives. Transition metal oxides (TMOs) such as NiO as an anode can be used as a substitute for carbon material. However, NiO has some limitations such as low coulombic efficiency, low cycle stability, and poor ionic conductivity. These limitations can be overcome through the use of different nanostructures. This present study reviews the integration of the electrochemical performance of binder involved nanocomposite of NiO as an anode of a LIB. This review article aims to epitomize the synthesis and characterization parameters such as specific discharge/charge capacity, cycle stability, rate performance, and cycle ability of a nanocomposite anode. An overview of possible future advances in NiO nanocomposites is also proposed.

Removal of Ni(II) Ions by Poly(Vinyl Alcohol)/Al2O3 Nanocomposite Film via Laser Ablation in Liquid

Al₂O₃-poly(vinyl alcohol) nanocomposite (Al₂O₃-PVA nanocomposite) was generated in a single step using an eco-friendly method based on the pulsed laser ablation approach immersed in PVA solution to be applicable for the removal of Ni(II) from aqueous solution, followed by making a physicochemical characterization by SEM, XRD, FT-IR, and EDX. After that, the effect of adsorption parameters, such as pH, contact time, initial concentration of Ni(II), and medium temperature, were investigated for removal Ni(II) ions. The results showed that the adsorption was increased when pH was 5.3, and the process was initially relatively quick, with maximum adsorption detected within 90 min of contact time with the endothermic sorption process. Moreover, the pseudo-second-order rate kinetics (k₂ = 9.9 × 10⁻⁴ g mg⁻¹ min⁻¹) exhibited greater agreement than that of the pseudo-first-order. For that, the Ni(II) was effectively collected by Al₂O₃-PVA nanocomposite prepared by an eco-friendly and simple method for the production of clean water to protect public health.

Hierarchical Stratiform of a Fluorine-Doped NiO Prism as an Enhanced Anode for Lithium-Ion Storage

Doping is regarded as a prominent strategy to optimize the crystal structure and composition of battery materials to withstand the anisotropic expansion induced by the repeated insertion and extraction of guest ions. The well-known knowledge and experience obtained from doping engineering predominate in cathode materials but have not been fully explored for anodes yet. Here, we propose the practical doping of fluorine ions into the host lattice of nickel oxide to unveil the correlation between the crystal structure and electrochemical properties. Multiple ion transmission pathways are created by the orderly two-dimensional nanosheets, and thus the stress/strain can be significantly relieved with trace fluorine doping, ensuring the mechanical integrity of the active particle and superior electrochemical properties. Density functional theory calculations manifest that the F doping in NiO could improve crystal structural stability, modulate the charge distribution, and enhance the conductivity, which promotes the performance of lithium-ion storage.

3D Carbon Networks: Design and Applications in Sodium Ion Batteries

As the key component of a new generation for low-cost energy storage systems, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted enormous attention and research due to its promising potentiality in large-scale electrochemical energy storage. For practical application of SIBs, carbonaceous materials have been considered to be one of the best choices for electrodes in virtue of their abundant reserves, low cost, easy availability, and environmental friendliness. 3D carbon network (3D-carbon) is of particular interests, which has displayed outstanding features, including abundant active sites, interconnected multi-level pore structures, high electronic conductivity, and excellent mechanical stability. Herein, we review the structural advantages of 3D-carbon and its preparation methods, and then discuss recent progress in 3D carbon materials and their composites for SIBs. The superior functionalities of 3D-carbon are emphasized as support templates or encapsulation shell membranes. Finally, we summarize and outline the challenges and future prospects of 3D-carbon in SIBs.

Morphology Controllable Synthesis of NiO/NiFe2O4 Hetero-Structures for Ultrafast Lithium-Ion Battery

Rational design of high performance anode material with outstanding rate capability and cycling stability is of great importance for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, a series of NiO/NiFe₂O₄ hetero-structures with adjustable porosity, particle size, and shell/internal structure have been synthesized via a controllable annealing process. The optimized NiO/NiFe₂O₄ (S-NFO) is hierarchical hollow nanocube that is composed of ~5 nm subunits and high porosity. When being applied as anode for LIBs, the S-NFO exhibits high rate capability and excellent cycle stability, which remains high capacity of 1,052 mAh g^-1 after 300 cycles at 5.0 A g^-1 and even 344 mAh g^-1 after 2,000 cycles at 20 A g^-1. Such impressive electrochemical performance of S-NFO is mainly due to three reasons. One is high porosity of its hierarchical hollow shell, which not only promotes the penetration of electrolyte, but also accommodates the volume change during cycling. Another is the small particle size of its subunits, which can effectively shorten the electron/ion diffusion distance and provide more active sites for Li⁺ storage. Besides, the hetero-interfaces between NiO and NiFe₂O₄ also contribute toitsfast charge transport.
